  • Documentary about the 2nd host of the tonight show- Jack Paar. I think he was juuuuust a slight bit better than Fallon and miles above Jay Leno (WORST). Not quite as good as Steve Allen or Jonny Carson (BEST).

It was once said there were two periods in television history: pre-Paar and sub-Paar. In many ways that is very true.

Jack Paar really began the talk show format. Steve Allen's show was different. Paar said (on Carson's show) that he could not do what Johnny did, that Johnny was great at what he did. However, Paar was the trailblazer, stood up to the television brass.....and was the person I'd rather talk to over dinner, or have as a friend or neighbor. (I'm a big Carson fan btw...)

Thank you for posting this. I'm a fan of early television history, and Jack Parr was of the trailblazers. He was a true original.

PAAR not Parr. "ONE of the trailblazers," NOT "of the trailblazers."

Re Kermit the Frog: Many years later, Jack Paar was on Letterman. Paar said theres something I want to show you. I checked and it's still there. He brought Letterman to near where the green room was. He said when Jim Henson was waiting to go on, he did this. He opened a utility closet and there was a series of pipes, knobs and levers. The pipes and knobs were all decorated to look like muppets with felt, yarn and paper. While he was waiting, Henson did that and over 20yrs later it was still there.

Aside from enjoying this doc on Jack Paar, I have learned that corporate power regards itself as omnipotent and I have learned that they are not....

Paar was a better interviewer than Carson- more relaxed and natural, less twitchy (nervous).

I guess Third Ave in NYC was the gay scene back in those days.
