    He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

    Hi Nate, do you have any video on how to teach dogs to STOP barking? My german shepherd always barks at dogs and walkers on the other side of the fence and in walks, and I have no clue on how to avoid that behavior. There are some videos out there, but your techniques and consistency are the best!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 года назад +3

      Thanks. I should have added the quiet command in this video. 🤦 Check out this video, it's a good way to teach the quiet command. Once they know the command, then you can correct the behavior for reliability. Just use a command like "quiet" instead of the hand signal the trainer in this video uses: ruclips.net/video/0vtn8NhofOw/видео.html
      Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior.
      If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act.
      In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear.
      Remember, it’s important that we set up our dogs up for success through staging different scenarios, so we can reward them the second they do it right. We also set them up for failure, so we can correct them the moment they do something wrong. Once you correct a dog for any bad behavior, you must immediately reward them when they are no longer doing that behavior. So if your dog was barking and you corrected your dog, the second your dog stopped barking, you would praise them for making the right choice.
      So your dog barks, you say one "no" (or whatever word you choose), then you would correct your dog. The moment your dog stops barking, praise and reward. :)
      I hope this helps!

      Harley didn't bark at first either. We had to start playing with the other dogs to get her frustrated enough to vocalize it. Once she did, we rewarded it and built on that success. It can take some time, but the key is finding something that makes your dog frustrated enough to vocalize it. Once you do and you start rewarding it, your dog will be able to make the connection. Best of luck. Cheers!

    My dog (lab) is a really quiet girl. She'll do a single bark maybe 1-2 times a week. I like it that way haha. But I also want to teach her to bark on command. My three thoughts/worries are: 1. How do I get her to actually bark when she never does? 2. Doesn't teaching her to bark enforce reactivity? 3. Will this start to make her want to bark all the time? Thank you for any feedback!

    • @NateSchoemer

      Just like any behavior, your dog may offer it up to get a reward. If you don't want your dog to offer up the behavior, then only reward your dog when the behavior is commanded. :)

    • @hazsmoothwalker7458
      @hazsmoothwalker7458 3 года назад +8

      It would be easy to make them think that. I would suggest that you work hard to teach her only to bark on command. Don't give her anything until you say the command. If she's barking like crazy; turn your back and ignore her until she's quite. Once she's quite; turn back around and give her the bark command. If she barks within 2-3 seconds of the command; give her the toy or treat. (If she barks 3 seconds or more after the command: she won't put the two together.) If she barks before you say the command; turn your back to her again. She should soon learn that Bark does not mean play. It is a command that she'll only get rewarded for if she does it when told.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 года назад +4

      Yes, it's possible for the dog to think that. Once you teach the command, just don't reward when the behavior is offered up and only reward when the behavior is commanded, just like Tony said. Cheers!
