You both are good at guiding your parents to try these durians. For your information, if you fill up the durian shell with water and wash your fingers with the water, it will immediately remove the smell from your fingers.
Durian porridge also tasty , its sweet, cook with coconut milk, pandan leaf, green bean, yam or sweat potato and sago, eat it with a glass of coffee in the evening
If you're still in Janda Baik, try Kopi Peladang, homegrown Janda Baik highland coffee. The Sup Tulang restaurant close to the Ikan Patin shop where you had your lunch is just heavenly. Also, Tiarasa is nearby, one of the first luxurious glamping sites in Janda Baik, the staffs are the best.
What a typical Malaysian scene, trying durians at a roadside durian stall. Guess it must be a fantastic experience for your mom and dad, eating by the roadside which l'm sure is not a practice back home in Canada....😃😄 As for lvana's family, it's "tiada masalah" 😂 Anyway, Well done to your mom, Steve. Though she initially can't tolerate the smell but she doesn't hesitate to try. Wonderful of her to share her honest thought about this King of Fruits. Well done, Diane !!! 10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for you.
“I wouldn’t cross the street to buy durian” very well described mum! 😁 But musang king is one of the best that Malaysia can offer mum. Give it a try again before leaving Malaysia! 🤗
Hai Steve...!!! I'm glad your mom was able to overcome the smell and have guts to try it... obviously most people don't want to try because of the smell, but the taste is a lot better than the smell...
It's easy to get the durian smell off the hands like magic, just run tap water over the spiny bark of the durian while washing your hands under it. Try it!!! I was amazed myself when one durian seller taught me this.
Wonderful. Thank you for this video. Hehe, good advice for your mom, don't judge the fruit by its pungent smell, a strong mental preparation did help a bit.
Hehe, the westerners like to analyze the smell and taste of durian. Glad to see that Ivana's family enjoy durian better. Steve's mom and dad also seemed to accept the fruit as it is.
You guys should get one of your Malay friends to cook pengat durian or serawa durian, really delicious with sticky rice. Have you tried it. Pengat durian is durian cook with coconut cream, palm sugar, pandan leaf, more sugar if you like it sweet and a little pinch of salt. Yummy.
To diff ppl, there are something appealing and appalling, the texture, the smell, and the taste, even the colour. Describing anything about those aspects is almost impossible, furthermore with different variety of the same fruit…. And that’s why durian is the king of fruit. Kudos to Durian Diane~~
just my suggestion.. when u still in Malaysia, and come to durian season.. u should search for durian orchard where u can eat fresh durian.. some orchard give u experience to collect the durian when they just fall from the tree..

Durian is nothing like other fruits. Durian from a different trees will taste differently. Musang King is called king because it has a complete taste profiles of a durian; sweet, bitter, pungent, etc
Steve's mum I'm sure will fall in love with durian if given more exposure to it. Imagine then if she craves for durian when back in Canada, from half way across the globe.
Nice durian vlog!. Always an interesting topic - durian eating. Yes, it's an acquired taste, but there are Malaysians who don't like durian. There are at least 3 relatives of mine who just don't like durian. 😅. No problem. Everyone has their preference but it's fun to try it. Good job Diane!! Lisa, enjoys every bit of it.
I believe theres a durian for everyone. Try the different varieties such as red prawn, black thorn, xo, musang king(mao shan wan), kampung, black gold, d24 and many others. The reason why your mom thought that durian was very stinky is because you tried thai durian(monthong). Thai durian is usually shipped frozen to western countries. They have a very strong smell and taste compared to malaysian durian. That is why thai durian is not a good way to start for beginners. Also, coconut juice is a good way to wash away the heatiness of durian.
Smell of soy sauces at the factories are out of this world ... but we all love soy sauces 🎃. They are made of soybeans and wheats after all. Fermented soybeans and wheats.
Drink plenty of water, or you may try the traditional way of cooling down by drinking plain water by pouring in the space at the durian skin and drink it from there, cause 2 durian for 6- pax was ok for beginner as for my son himself he can finish 5 durian by himself😅😅😅😅
In europe or america, most durian coming from Thailand. Frozen & not fresh. Sale in the supermarket or malls. The best way is try it in ‘their’ native countries. Anyway, Musang king is the ‘king’ of all.
Taste ... Custardy, a bit oniony depending of type of durians, milky in general ... detail taste differs according to variety of durians. Smell ... Pungent, but depends on age of the durians too.
The smell is like blue cheese, gorgonzola especially. Once you're familiar with them, you could smell the differences between each durian. The taste and texture vary according to the type of durian, the season, the farmer/orchard itself, they could be cheesy, vanilla-ish, sweet-ish, even marshmallow-ish, to me at least . I'm more partial to tempoyak, fermented durian in any forms.
As a Malaysian, I still hate the smell of Durians but knowing what a Musang King taste like, I can definitely put up with the smell and I personally prefer eating it cold after a day in the fridge
I'm always surprised at how limited Westerners taste buds are and also the aversion to soft textures in foods e.g. seafood - belacan, anchovies, Thai-style steamed fish.
Same, for me fresh durian is not in my liking, i like it become other things, tempoyak is good, ice-cream is good, dodol durian is good, serawa durian is best.
Surprised nobody has mentioned about the aphrodisiac quality of the durian. The body is both literally and figuratively 'in heat' on a fair consumption of durian. There's an old kampung saying which goes, "When the durian goes down, the sarong goes up". 😂
