I was stuck in a MLM cult for 5 years. I grew up in poverty and general instability. My parents never really taught me about jobs and basically stopped paying attention to my life after 15 when we were homeless for a while. I went on my first interview at this MLM firm and they hired me on the spot, of course. I gained so much self esteem and confidence from being involved with people that were infected by positivity and goals of upward momentum. It literally changed my life. However, the positivity came with intense shaming, berating, and psychological abuse all under the guise of “not reaching your goals”. They psychologically manipulated everyone to believe that if they did not reach their goals (sales goals), recruit enough people, retain complete positivity at all times, you were a failure. When you did good, they rewarded you with trips, money, and positive reinforcement. I was “seduced” by an older manager and he became my first real boyfriend (he was also 7 years older than me). He urged me that he needed to move the business to another state and that he needed me there to help start up the business. He paid my way and used me as this young woman who could lure people into the MLM. He brought me to a place where I knew no one but people of the MLM cult and psychologically abused me for years with the back and forth of negative and positive reinforcement of the cult. I literally didn’t understand that I was being manipulated when I was in it. I got to the point were I just couldn’t stand being so alone and bullied anymore. I knew some friends that had been in as long as I had that had recently left the cult and urged me to do the same. I secretly asked a friend to borrow some money to drive back to my home state when my BF was out of town, (yes I had to ask for money because through out this whole time, I didn’t make ANY money! I had maybe $100 to my name). I have come to realize years later that I was involved in a cult and what I went through really impacted me. It’s hard to share this with anyone that hasn’t gone through it. Anyways, thanks for listening. God bless ❤
Woooow.. what a reality. You pretty strong for all that you went through. It's never too late to find your inner strong self again right? All the very best though!!
Good bless you took. You are all not alone. I have tried these groups decades ago. Never got paid for what I sold. Abusive toward us. Same as what you are telling here. I found this in many jobs. They also transferred my accounts into mgrs accounts as the pay came in. They stole from me. 1 job.... at least 100,000...My friend showed me. I was told I have to figure it out on same day or I can not have it. Thieves are all these people are. The abuse is too make you believe it's you who is a failure. Truth. You succeeded. They robbed you. Or if you're money. As they did me.
My dad taught me early on in life when I was a kid about these pyramid schemes he would take me to them whenever they invited him to one and wouldnt buy anything and told me how they just wanted your hard earned money, also took me to Alcoholic Anonymous meetings even though he wasnt an Alcoholic just so I can listen to peoples stories and how they went down the path of destruction. For that I thank my Father and I love him! I think alot of people should do this for their kids.
Respect and Blessings; “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.” Proverbs 22:7-8 KJV If you could get paid to use something that you are going to use and won’t live without, would you cash that check?
The government says the same thing now. Funny how that works, those who want to manipulate tell us to not listen to logic, and us knowing full well said logic would expose their lies and manipulation
The scariest line from one of the leaders in this MLM video: "You cannot let logic control you. Logic is bad for us!". Now that definitely is a preaching of a cult leader!
Have you ever built any kind of a business? Building business isn’t for everyone it takes lot of work, time, and prioritization Most people want their 9-5 and then watch 3-4 hours of Netflix/ social media versus bettering themselves
Thats where you are wrong buddy. There are MLM companies who compensate agents for selling even when the agents themselves doesnt buy. Don't make sweeping statement without knowing the truth .
Everybody is taking about his editing skills, but don't underestimate his research and capability of giving whole information about MLM. You're a gem James bro❤️
He was right about choosing the right company, most mlm's are legally or illegally pyramid schemes. But some aren't, choose wisely because the whole industry isn't a cult. I belong to the best Mlm company, that has really changed my personality, my income and my whole life. I am very thankful to it.
perfect that is what we all should do!!! Because these companies are only worth to a free meal.....Please kindly let me know if you get to know any more free meals .....lol
I recently dated someone who was involved with an MLM. I couldn't believe how perfect we seemed to be for every other. Then she introduced me to her MLM and ended it when I wouldn't sign on. I was shocked. What stuck out to me is I have always been a numbers guy. I graduated college with a degree in accounting. I looked at the numbers and didn't like them. But when I went to meetings, the detractors were always painted as people without a job, irresponsible, living in their mother's basement. Yet here I was, a college educated numbers guy with a good job, asking questions.
You have seriously dodged a bullet honestly. Someone like that would have been a burden for your entire life basically. Hemorrhaging money. Putting the MLM first. She is going to essentially waste the valuable time she could have spent developing a real career in her 20s and 30s
Oh no! I just had a long conversation with my cousin’s upline as I try to get her out of it. (Upline reached out to me as she instructs my cousin to block me on social media). I asked so many critical questions and she didn’t seem to answer any of my questions even backed by FTC and peer reviewed documents. She calls them hearsay and as I bombarded her with questions and she kept dismissing them, she eventually resulted to throwing insults at me lmao.
Any "opportunity" that requires me to treat every person I know as a potential recruit or customer? No, thank you. My friends are my friends and I like to keep it that way.
Lmao thats like starting a Lawn Mowing business and saying: "its a scam because now I look at everyone with grass as a potential client" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 maybe you people who don't understand basic concepts of business shouldn't have started a home based business to begin with
Exactly. The stupid, Amway "anyone can do it" bullcrap coming from my in laws WHILE THEY WERE NOT DOING IT was just ridiculous. It caused us to avoid them for years and years, and made me realize they were actually idiots. So... hey maybe that was the benefit... lol
When someone told you to attend a seminar for business opportunity, accept the invitation , eat food as much as you can ,take home if possible ,but never sign up for anything ,tell them you'll think about it, and repeat the cycle for next invitation
The devil is the lazy person who doesnt put in hardwork but expects money to trickle down from heavens. And when then doesn't happen, they put the blame on everyone else but themselves
I remember when I was younger my mom telling me "you should never pay to get a job" and thinking well....duh and never understood why she said it so seriously until someone tried to get me to join a MLM.
It's a big scam business in Hollywood too. They will have open casting calls at legitimate casting hubs. Yet you are offered 🤔 to be a part of the funding of the movie in exchange for a part of the profits. You get the part! All you have to do is meet at this fancy restraunt in Beverly Hills..sign papers and pay $300. That's it and you have the part, a copy of the movie, and a take of the profits. SCAM! They get thousands and poof disapear.
Yes you are right....there is an American company named FLP(forever living products) which is also a same pyramid scheme company targeting vulnerable people who are financially weak in my county Pakistan and also in our Asia region and showing them big seminars filling there mouth with lust of wealth and big achievement some fancy dreams. And believe me at once I was also thinking to join this but God save me I realise it's fu**ing bullshit and then I have to convince my friends and family to sink in this shit business
My wake up call to get out of an MLM was when I realized the people who were telling me how many thousands of dollars they made were driving a car that was falling apart and one break down away from putting them out of business.
"You can not let logic control you" is, perhaps, the most telling statement of this documentary. The fact that you can be immediately and punishably guilty of "wrong think" from the outset of your "employment" is the bloodiest red flag ever flown.
@@bn8579 exactly.if there's a question they don't have some BS answer for it's always "faith". Why will your God not just show himself if he wants more believers so they can be saved? Faith. He is testing our faith , to see if we will waver or stop believing. Oh...so that he can send you to a place of despair where you will experience torture and death for eternity? Faith.
I wish schools would spend a lot more time teaching kids how to navigate life. There are so many people that fall for these scams simply because they didn't know any better.
The absolute biggest red flag for anyone considering joining one of these is the fact that there is no base pay. Add to that, they expect you to pay them to attend their training "seminars". Even as a fry cook at a fast food joint, you wouldn't be expected to pay the company you work for to train you.
The biggest red flag is not knowing that every entrepreneurship and owning your own business means not earning for the first few months. If you want an assured monthly income, go be an EMPLOYEE, not a BUSINESSWOMAN
When you go into a 100% commissioned based job, there is no base pay. You are a 1099, self employed/independent contractor. Not a W2/Employee with benefits.
Keywords: - Be your own boss - Entrepreneur - Passive income - I used to be like you... (insert a heartbreaking sob story) - Business opportunity - No college or university degree needed - Make money online - Only available for a limited time - Mindset - Make 100K a month while sitting on a couch - Quit your job - Financial Freedom - Motivation - Investing - Positivity - This is DEFINELY NOT a pyramid scheme!
Absolutely B....shit😄 The guy doesn’t know anything about network marketing and describe all of them as Pyramid schemas. Sorry mate you have zero knowledge about the industry 😅
@@Dream-Me I got one offer recently it saddens me how people I used to go to school with fallen for this but at the same time I felt disgusted because they thought I would fall for it
Honestly, the only thing that probably kept me from Mary Kay and Avon was the selling aspect. I was young, but I was super shy...I knew I didn't have the right grindset to ever be successful. That was the ONE good thing that came from my insecurity lol.
Good point. IIRC Mary Kay and Avon weren't pyramid schemes since they did have actual product to sell. Do you know if they also had the recruiting part? That's where the pyramid scheme takes over.
Mary Kay and Avon makes the whole industry looks bad. Low compensation and minimal products. But doesn't necessarily make the whole industry a bad one.
I suggest you read the book that comes with the kit. It's called think and grow rich. It motivated me to be the person that I am, without joining them. I did buy the kit the author is David Swartz!
I almost fell for it too but my then fiance (now my husband and dad of two) kept telling me that it was a scam…. If it is THAT easy to be rich, why are there still many people struggling to make ends meet nowadays? Thank God I came to my sense
A young couple approached me and my girlfriend, we had friendly casual conversation and the topic of being financially independent came up. I told them my story and how I’m striving for my own business and she tells me about her ‘mentors’ and how they became FI when they were 21-23. She immediately wanted to swap numbers and sync up with her and her partner over coffee to discuss more about us meeting with her mentors. I knew at that point they were in an MLM, so I played along. After 6 weeks of coffee meet ups and these ‘fun’ seminars, I finally convinced them to leave and pursue their own dreams. It’s only one couple but I’m glad I was able to save them because they were in a vulnerable state.
I just had a couple approach me at IKEA out of the blue the dude starts complimenting my shoes and starts to be overly extrovert like he wants to really get to know me and become friends like he’s really interested in who I am. Right then I knew he’s wanting something from me. He was trying to pitch something but I couldn’t figure it out and he never said what he was selling. He wasted so much time when he could of just pitched his “business opportunity” in the first 10min of talking to me rather than trying to be slick in making me think he was really wanting to be friends or get to know me as a person. They wanted to meet for coffee and I agreed just because I was curious what exactly he was trying to sell not that I would buy into it because I was already pissed on the way he approached me. What amazes me is that they have the same access to the internet to research mlm and Amway to find out that you can’t really make the big money they claim you can make.
I remember my sister getting into Amway back in the 80s. Her obstetrician recruited her! She left when she was on the delivery table and he was trying to recruit an attending nurse. It hit me when you said MLM's prey on stay home moms.He had a built in downline as an OB/gyn. Makes you wonder why a physician would need to generate money. Fun fact Shanan Watts was heavily into MLM's. Putting huge financial issues on the family finances. MLM's are definitely a cult!
MLMs prey on vulnerable people like cults do, I fell into it as a broke young adult who couldn't afford to leave her mom's house. At least I quickly felt something was wrong and left rapidly but I still feel stupid to fall for something so unrealistic, if it was that easy to make money no one would be poor anymore. Also the one-track mind, investment and praising/shaming process are crazy.
So the issue here is the obstetrician, not the company. In fact, companies send reminders to salesperson to practice professionalism but they ignore it.
This one time I dropped off my ex girlfriend to what she said was a “job interview”. I picked her up afterwards and I asked her how it went. She told me that she paid an initiation fee and she was going to recruit more people to the organization, she said they suggested that she start with her family and friends. I parked the car got off and went straight to the person and asked for her money back or else I would tele everyone in that office with “job interviews” that this was a pyramid scheme.
What was the "job"? Was it door to door knives? That one is common for doing the "job interview" setup. And yeah, did they refund the money? What made your girlfriend fall for if?
Amway. I once knew a medical student who dropped out if school to sell Amway. At that time Amway had people invite friends over for dinner and then spring it on them. They NEVER announced that it was an Amway pitch. Just the deception and trickery was disgusting.

Enoch Ali i don’t understand what a marketing bot/ software is ment to do and Does jani do internet marketing? Or do you mean he is making videos? Plus if people can get the software by liking the vid then u can like , download the software and then remove the like. But if you are putting an effort into building a software then why not make it yield you money. Anyways I m not into deals now.
I used to work in a salon where the owner put more attention into Amway than his own business. The shop had to shut down. He annoyed his clients away. Imagine coming in for a haircut, and getting pitched?
I cringe to think I was a part of this. I was lonely and a recent widow. I feared not being able to meet the financial obligations without the help of my late husband's income. They gaslighted me, love bombed me. Took advantage of my vulnerability 😢
Don't feel bad, so was I. Although the cost was way too high and I did not lose monetarily, I lost valuable time...6 hours that I could've been with my family, but instead listening to four self-absorbed speakers.
@@AlvinSeville1I fell for it to Ran into some financial trouble coming from active duty to reserve so was looking for something to make money they used one of my Battle buddies from basic training and that's how I got looped into Premier Financial and already so much red flags everything in this videos and also what bothered so many of them under jack ma trying to talk about life insurance but they are not the issuing authority it was other companies they were doing it on behalf of and the classes were not about understanding life insurance it was about selling which was got tuned off. It was so cult like it scared the crop out of me.
No reason to feel any shame for getting in and staying in-even for a long time. But a lot of reason to feel a healthy sense of pride and self-esteem for getting out. SO proud of you.
I'm so sorry you went through this. It's not your fault. These people are exceptionally manipulative and prey on vulnerable people. It's not your fault. Sorry for your loss xx
Honestly, “You’re family, and no one messes with the family” is the most manipulative thing I’ve ever heard from an MLM scammer. It’s predatory rhetoric.
Or, "Do you really want to give your family the life they deserve" and "your uplines are taking time from their kids to help you". Screw those manipulative assholes.
My wife and I got involved in the Herbalife scam and I ended up over $15,000 poorer. Finally it dawned on me the only one making serious money was our upline. The couple had a beautiful home in a gated community as well as a cabin in Idaho. I finally realized that all we were doing was to fuel their lifestyle. So I pulled out and my wife left a couple of months later. The really reprehensible thing, though, is how they are scamming poor Latinos. I attended a couple of seminars and saw the hope in those people's faces. Most of them end up poorer than when they started MLMs are despicable.
Oh my, it's totally true about the Latinos. I've been to Amway big conventions here in Italy and the Latin community was so huge compared to the rest, and mind you Italy does not have this huge Latin population. I never was able to figure out why.
This is hands down THE BEST independent documentary on those scams/commercial cults!! Fantastic to watch and incredibly powerful. Thank you for creating this and spreading this cautionary message.
Once, a family member extended an invitation to me for Amway. The concept was so persuasive that I eagerly desired to join right away. Unfortunately, I lacked the financial means to do so. Consequently, I approached that relative and requested their assistance in covering the expenses for my membership. I made a solemn promise to reimburse them twice the amount once I gained stability within the organization. However, to my disappointment, despite boasting about his prosperity, he refused to support me. Presently, he works as a security officer at a grocery store while I have successfully pursued a career as an engineer.
I think them not willing to help you with getting started is a huge sign of just how not-prosperous they were, but wanting to hide it. But I'm really, really happy you didn't join. Likelihood of being successful is minimal and those who are successful are only there because they stepped on others to be there. They have a huge downline, meaning lots of other people below them that they're getting money from. This is why MLM leaders become extremely aggressive when you or someone else leaves, because now you're messing with the money machine. I'm just really relieved that by circumstance, you dodged a bullet and best yet, landed in a career that has much better and guaranteed profitability 😊. I hope everything is going well for you.
This comment really gives the game away. He was trying to fake it till you make it, you inadvertently called his bluff, and then he wasted his life and never made it while you found a legit and established way to prosper yourself. Chapeau!
@@daysoflakshithararefootage2685 I am not a man Julie it's a girl's name and no I am not because I went to college and I am an accountant I know how to manage my money well . If you are one of f those MLM cults individual ,Don't bother me!
I was opened to the idea when presented to me, I was in a vulnerable state when a guy approached me. After some extensive research I don’t have it within me to manipulate people and make money of the sales they make in (Amway). I’ve opted out. I have a good heart and if it takes manipulation to make money off of people who are also vulnerable then I’d rather be poor.
This is one of the biggest truth of this universe that many people don't want to know. They try to know they secret but actually they try to fool themselves. Thanks james you are doing great. All the best for your carrer
@Cynthia Kelvin You're all scammers trying to convince people, replying your own comment using your multiple accounts 😂😂😂, you want people to fall on that and contact that crypto guy 😂😂 James Jani keep preaching and educating people, it is still a long way, scammers in the comment section as well, just unbelievable
I was a cashier at a Kroger store several years ago and a young couple came through my line and were very friendly and pleasant. There was nobody in line behind them so we talked a bit. Then the guy was like "well have you ever thought about having more free time and making more money?" That's when it clicked for me and I told him I already had a good gig and told them to have a great day 😂
This is one of the situations where Im glad that I have social anxiety. I couldn't be roped into an mlm since the idea of recruiting scares the shit outta me.
He forgot to tell that all this meeting with MLM stars costs... so it could cost 50-100-200 dollars to attend such meeting/convention. And you must also buy motivational materials, Books..., CD, etc. That was they way a today celebrity Kiyosaki... was made , his book "Poor dad- Rich Dad" sold millions... how? He was signed by AMWAY... and that book was on their list to buy for every new member. This economic guru... is fake... he never bught a real estate before he made millions selling this book about investing in real estate and PASSIVE INCOME....
I was invited with my friends to The mlm seminars. And they wanted to offer me money for the start but I refused to join there business. Today before watching this video I was in my room thinking about what to do to earn money and accidentally I was thinking to call those friends and negotiate. But randomly I came across this video. I thank God that he brought me here
I take it the dislikes on this video are from people who are already suckered in a mlm scam. I have once or twice and always lost more money than I gained. My intuition always told me something was fraudulent from the start. The moment someone tells me "Hey long time how are you doing," or "I have a business opportunity" my scam alert radar goes off. This video is phenomenal and deserves way more views. I'm also here before it hits a million views. The editing skills on this fellow are chef's kiss.
Same! I was suckered in a few times and always lost money. Yes, something always feels off for sure! I feel like I could have spent my time learning new skills than selling someone else's products. 💜
I remember getting suckered into attending an Amway meeting a couple times when I was younger. Big red flag is when they won't tell you the name of this Great Business Opportunity until you go to the meeting.
I was recruited into the Amway business at 15 years old and remained involved until I was 27. Amway ruled my life and shaped my childhood. For some, MLM isn't a cult but for me it ran my entire life, manipulated all my friendships and made me look at people like dollar signs and not actual friendships. Pyramid scheme businesses are designed to take advantage of people and worse, for me, it shaped my brain to always look for ways to profit from friendships and anyone else I met. The most I ever made in 12 years of business was $900 in one month. I had recruited over 200 people in my business and spoke on stages across the country. I was told, "People will believe you because you hold the microphone." I lead weekly "Open Opportunity Meetings" and had a large group...worse, when I left the business I lost all my friendships and since I'd been in since I was a child - that was everyone I knew. Avoid these.
@@RuslanSokolovskyi riiight. You're definitely right - this was all my fault. You can't be serious. I was brainwashed at 15, instructed I cannot hang out with people who were "negative influences" or "dream stealers." MLM is a predatory business model.
You did it the wrong way and told them the wrong things. Network marketing is like any other business. if you have people that wants to earn without doing any work advise them to buy stocks and watch them cry later when their money dissappears
Me too, this was over 20 years ago, I know exactly how Amway manipulated you , I was introduce by my family doctor, the starter kit was $150 or so, I hosted a few recruiting party at my house, same as you , all my friends, and families were there, at the end of each presentation, most looked at me like I was crazy , how I fell into the scam. Lol , after 2 months we tried to get out of it, my family doctor and their senior Amway people literally kicked us out the door, lol and said “ you supposed to support the system/ paramid scam system”. I even asked for my $150 back . I guess I got myself a new family doctor 👩⚕️, never fell to any of these again, just work and saved up to 20% of my paycheque to payoff my mortgage . Now I’m in my mid 50 & debt free, did it the old fashion way. Live below my mean , only buy what I need not what I want, only way for me, I did it .
I ended my marriage and took our kids over MLM. It was a nightmare. My husband spent out grocery money, rent, gas money etc to put into the business. He stopped working and focused on recruiting his down line. He went to meetings all over the US. I had to work raise the kids and beg for food from food banks. They'd send their wives to help me overcome my negative thoughts. My ex is on his 3rd marriage over 55 and broke. This is also why I stopped going to church. When I start hearing the same old record I run.
Does your ex have Narcissistic Personality Disorder by any chance? Such people are often drawn to cults. Also well meaning codependent people who can be easily manipulated unfortunately
My mom has done several of these, and while she thankfully never bankrupted us, it always felt like she was just buying more and more and never actually selling. She no longers does any MLM but she still blames herself for not "having enough drive"
Believe it or not, I actually bought some Young Living products not knowing that it was an MLM. I saw that my cousin had some (she wasn’t a distributor, she just ordered some under someone), I liked them, and just ordered a few oils for myself. A few days later I was tracked down by the nearest distributor in my town and she wouldn’t leave me alone for months. She couldn’t believe I didn’t order under someone. She convinced me to buy the starter kit and I had to make a monthly order which I kept up for a few months bc I truly did love their products. But soon enough, I couldn’t take the marketing anymore. I was constantly being pressured to join virtual meetings, visit the farms, tell my friends and family, hold events, etc. etc.. Nope. This isn’t a be-your-own-boss career. You’re literally scammed into devoting your whole life to the company….
Same happened to me but with Thrive. The products do kind of work for long lasting energy but are garbage at weight loss or any of the other claims they made, let alone the MLM aspect of it which i never got involved with. With those companies, at least you're receiving SOMETHING for your money, unlike others that want to sell you a "mindset."
Same reason you got lured into your day job and now you probably hate it. The only reason keeping you from not believeing that's a pyramid scheme as well. Is only due to the fact that 90% of the average population do it everyday as well. Keep your thoughts to yourself.
My ex wife dove in, head first with Vemma. That insane group brainwashed her into someone she wasn’t. I went to a “meeting” with her once, I could tell immediately it was a MLM. I tried telling her and explaining, but she didn’t want to hear it. Vemma was a big reason she decided to step out on our marriage and find someone else. I despise that company for their tactics and manipulative ways. Do your homework people. Nothing great in life is easy. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is 99.9% of the time.
I am sorry to hear that bruh. But yeah, you are right about your last statement. The best advice I ever received from a wealthy person is that It takes hard work and sacrifice to become successful, but it takes double of that to keep your success. Whenever someone paints you a picture of success as a permanent holiday and shopping trip? Take it as a red flag.
I also was apart of vemma. Ugh that was crazy I legit was so broke already wanting a side hustle. They sold the whole dream with prizes if you can gory more ppl in and a lot of people that were there also sold the we got money bs.
This is one of the main reasons i wouldnt want to do one. I would not want someone i like to now hate me because i recruited them into some shady company
They need to start teaching this to kids about to graduate high school because they are highly targeted by MLMs and they are gullible enough to fall for it
Exactly. Also, the entrepreneur cultures need to be canceled. They are the ones encouraging young people not to pursue college & univ and start businesses that will generate 10k per month to them 🙄🙄🙄🙄
@@classysis6264 i do feel that entrepreneurial culture is being romanticized, “everyone can build an online business or be the next Musk”when we all know some make it & some don’t, but perhaps canceling it would not be the best direction to head towards, with out entrepreneurs where would you and me work? Who would start the companies that will hire the employees? Some one has to drive the economical bus that so many of us ride. Now, the idea that everyone can and should be an entrepreneur is a bad one to push, some are born with more inclination to follow orders than to give them, but that is something that everyone is entitled to find out on their own, otherwise if we started imposing and ruling who is born to lead and who is supposed to follow, or “cancel” the opportunity to choose to be or dream to entrepreneur well than we would be going backwards rather than forward. And soon end up in a place that we were not too long ago.
I didn't have money experience too, and I saw through the bullshit the first sec they spoke! I think you are being very kind to preys, but they are actually stupid.
@@josealtamirano8030 - Franchisees can set store policies, offer promotions, and adjust prices dependent on their agreement with the franchisor. It varies from business to business. But the main obvious - very, very obvious - difference that I failed to mention in my post two months ago, is that I’ve never heard of a franchisee making more money signing people up to open new McDonald’s restaurants than they do than by selling a burger. People who own actual businesses want to sell products, not recruit competitors.
@@MisplacedTexan i see your point selling product is what business should do, what if that recruitment assists with the selling of product, as in the case of the owner of the franchise company, using the same example you give, McDonald’s, the McDonald’s corporation ( or what ever their official name may be) recruited franchisees to assist their sales of their product “their delicious burgers 😉. Seen from that point are they not making more money from recruiting than from selling burgers themselves (the McDonald’s corporation) and isn’t this same privilege that the mlm participants are granted?
@@josealtamirano8030 - Not even close to the same thing. Because no franchisee in the history of McDonald’s or Little Caesar’s or Subway or anywhere else is more focused on recruiting than selling, and they don’t try to get the nail salon next door to their business to stop doing nails and start selling burgers. It’s apples and oranges in many ways. People who say they’re making a ton of money in MLM and want me to “join their team” (and my God, have I ever been asked… DOZENS of times) shut up pretty quickly when you say, “You’re making a ton of money? Cool. Can you show me a copy of your 1099? Block out your SS# and such, of course, but I’d like to see your 1099 with your name on it. That’ll reassure me that this is really a profitable business.” They might show you their upline’s upline’s upline’s 1099, but they won’t show you theirs. Why? Because either they didn’t make enough to get one, or they made so little that they’d be embarrassed to show you. Out of all the MLM-ers who have tried to recruit me, not one has ever shown me their 1099. Not one.
@@MisplacedTexan Yes, no franchisee has done that but i believe it is more because they are not granted that opportunity by the corporation, would you not want to get at least 1% for life of what McDonald’s earns every time it opens a new location if you helped it find that person that will run a successful franchise location, if your income grew every time that cycle repeated, I guess we would have to asked a franchise owner since we are not one or if one reads this thread they will let us know. And yes opening a location next door would be pretty dumb, but i think Starbucks and subway and mcdonnals know a little bit about how close together you can open new locations, specially Starbucks, it seems like they are opening one in every corner, and yet market Saturation does not seem to be a problem for them just yet. Finally, yes people lie, in network marketing or life in general and in an industry where anyone, and i mean ANYONE can join there will be problems with people that lie cheat and steal, that is just part of human nature, can you imagine what huge mess it would be if stock brokerage for example was just as easy to join as a network marketing, stocks would also cure cancer (😅 you know what i mean) well Im glad you didn’t join the network marketing industry with the people that thought it was necessary to lie for you to join their project. you saved yourself from loosing money and perhaps prevented yourself from probably lying to others as well because they would have led you to do likewise. I hope that those would be the last occasion you would be approached about it and lied to, but i think we both know thats probably not true the industry has much to learn, grow, learn and correct. You take care brother,, much love!
I was working at walmart and was approached by someone who wanted to sell me a kit. Dude was really friendly. I met up with him afterwards (i was 16 and didnt know any better) but, i didnt fall for it. Im glad i dodged that bullet.
Glad you did too! With that being said though, I do have to admit I do find something very cultish about Walmart. I used to work for that company, but never again! I remember every single morning, they would drag all the associates in to do that stupid Walmart cheer. Even when they were remodeling the back and break rooms, they wanted outside to do it in front of the customers. Very embarrassing lol and they didn't want people to work for any competing companies! I loathe that company and haven't even shopped there since I quit....and then here comes those mlm companies! Its a harsh world 😢
MLMs before you join: You can do this part time! Choose your own hours! It's easy! MLMs after you join: You won't make any money unless you work 24/7. It's hard work!
I went a MLM seminar. I was clueless and felt uncomfortable...like it was a cult recruitment seminar. I inadvertently ripped a savage fart and was asked to leave.
Yes this should be on mainstream network tv prime time, I would love to see ALL MLM exposed and brought down AND see their founders, managers face prison time like Bill #$%T^ Gould the founder of Equinox ( Why was Equinox not included in this holy shit a lot of people lost money )
My husband was part of an MLM for a few years, to my biggest dismay. They spread toxic positivity and eventually he started feeling depressed and inadequate. I sent him an anti-mlm video and it finally clicked. Also behind the scenes they were teaching him how to hide things from me, like how much product he was buying and giving away to prospects who never panned out. He had to go through his own kind of deprogramming, to get rid of all the toxic positivity, love bombing, gaslighting and to live a normal life again.
Former MLM member here. This video is a great summary and I hope it prevents a lot of sign-ups and gets others who've already been sucked in out alive (as the ending song states). Thanks for putting in the time and effort needed to put this out.

My daughter joined Amway several years ago. It has contributed to the breakdown of our relationship and it breaks my heart. I pray for all families dealing with this. My heart is with my daughter and I pray she finds joy again.
Went to the biggest Amway convention in Atlanta, loved the experience but this company never made success in Quebec. It had great products but no support like many home business, now not even from the owners .They expect everyone to do the work for them .Many act like a distributor warehouse service
Judi, there's nothing wrong with Amway per se, just some of the underhanded tactics that they use, claim you can retire in 5 years or some such nonsense. I once drove a truck with a partner - long haul so we spent 24/7 together - who was into Amway so I had to listen to him talk about it all day and all night. He even brought books and CDs onto the truck. He bought into the claim that you could have anything you so desired, could fulfill all your hopes and dreams. I'm like that's nuts. It's a job, nothing more, nothing less. Another thing was everybody who got into it with the sole purpose of getting out of it. There is only one reason for that - they hated it. I'm like find something you love and you won't be so anxious to get out. Another thing I noticed - he did not have one single Amway product. Tell more about your daughter, Judi, if you don't mind.
I hate Amway ! I liked the products but that’s not how you make money . I went to some sort of big meeting ( huge ) and it was like if you crossed extreme evangelical people high dosed on superficial and smugness ( not to mention the blame in folks who didn’t make it ).. I needed a shower . They played Lee Greenwoods song LOUD and to this day I can’t stand the song .
Biggest red flag: If you find yourself paying for anything BEFORE you get paid. They say "investment" for your business, but your are not the business, you are the customer being sold on the IDEA you are a business owner.
When I was in my twenties, I became involved in a MLM. My experience was like what is explained here. What I ended up finding was that the up line at the top or "king pin distributors" weren't making their millions off the commission created by their down lines. Where they made their millions from were the book, motivational materials and seminars. The "business tools" that every distributor had to invest in or you weren't going to be successful. In short, they made their millions on selling you a dream. Not a product or "business opportunity".
The Kirsten Dunst TV Series "On Becoming a God in Central Florida" did an excellent job at showing both the ludicrousness of MLM cults and also Scientology (since their cult was a fusion of the two).
i also got into an mlm when i reached 20 , but i finally left after doing a lot of thinking because there were a lot of things that they lied to me about, even up until now they are still bothering me to upgrade my account
I'm really sorry to hear that man... during the research for this video I encountered many people who had family members tied up in these schemes currently. It's a really tough thing to convince them away from. I came across this: www.vice.com/en_us/article/43e573/how-to-get-a-friend-out-of-an-mlm-herbalife-amway-younique- article from Vice while researching, it may help a little in understanding how to persuade her out of it. Wish you the best, friend 🙏
I once picked up a girl for a date. She said "let's go hang out with my friends". An hour later I was sitting in a room listening to a presentation about supplements. I looked around and saw several other guys like me who were lured there by attractive women. The company was actually pimping out these girls to lure guys in.
Never about the products but the people who say they will help but don't see them after you joined ,many companies same problem. Products were good while some were kore like hobbies ,like makeup
When I was in my early 20s a guy I knew dragged me to one lf these events. I had no idea what it was. The way they were acting I thought it was a church or something. But they kept talking about "the buisniess" and "how to be successful". I remember being frustrated thinking "what do these people actually sell?". People were paying a lot of money for self help audio tapes from "people who made double dimond". I heard one and it was all vague nonspecific BS. It was like, you paid $40 for that? And this dude wants you to be successful? Then why didn't he post it on youtube? Its a religon to these people man. I tried to talk this elderly couple out of it, but they fell for it and lost their entire life savings. These kinds of companies need to be outlawed. They are pure evil.
A long time ago, my g/f and I were invited for some MLM scheme by a friend and her b/f, who were already "distributors." I was really skeptical from the get go, but what really pissed me off was how they ended the presentation. The guy told a "true story" about a good friend of his who was never very successful. He pitched the friend several times, with no success, and his friend eventually "committed suicide." And, of course, the presenter said the one thing he regretted in his life was not working harder to get his friend into the business because he knows he would have had a better life. People in the audience gasped. I was so angry they would pull that trick. Since then, I've noticed this tactic is still used by most MLMs.
Double Diamond sounds like Amway. Some of those guys made a ton of money, but they didn't make their money selling Amway or even from their downline's Amway sales. They made their money selling seminars and tapes on how to get rich selling Amway.
I love both the quality of your videos as well as the fact that you draw an important analogy between how both cults and exploitative pyramid schemes operate. It's brilliant. You are providing a valuable service to the public, James. xo
I think this is also the same as being with an abusive person. They slowly isolate you, until you're completely dependent on them. Abusive people also prey on vulnerable/lonely people
Their scheme falls apart if they give you time to think it over and apply logic. Its also one of the principles of hypnosis it must be constantly reinforced or the effect wears off They generally will not allow newer recruits to even have 24 hours to themselves often times they will be contacting their new recruits several times a day. to ensure that the brainwashing holds.
On tik tok era, when everyone wants to see short and funny videos, this type of content is unusual and appreciated You deserve all the success you have and more.
The people who fall for these scams are what Mark Cuban calls "Wantrepeneurs." They're basically people who want success without having to put in the hard work, risk,, and dedication in building a real business to become successful.
Excellent video. A friend told me why MLMs don't work for more than 99% of its members. Less than 1% of the people make big money in any MLM. After watching this video, I decided to stop promoting MLMs for good.
Being surrounded with overly positive people in a mass gathering like that... it's so creepy for me. I'll leave without second thoughts or wouldn't even attend in the first place.
I wouldn't call it overly positive, more of a phony presentation designed to give an appearance of positivity. I remember my first Amway rally, looking around the crowd even spotting a couple people I knew in the crowd. I remember people jumping up and down cheering on the speakers. The goal was to get people caught up in the emotion of the moment. The idea of quick wealth. It was like watching a performance of mass hypnosis. My background had been as a sales manager in commercial sales dealing with facts and figures rather than playing on peoples emotions. I spotted the tactics they used immediately also the fact that immediate uplines wouldn't leave their new recruits alone for even a day without contacting them attempting to maintain and reinforce the brainwashing tactics.
"You with us, together, It's family...and nobody messes with the family." Not even Vin Diesel could've said that with such intensity. man these people are hardcore.
Happened to me in London. I went to a seminar in 2003. The energy in the room was suffocating. The only reason I managed to come out of the hypnosis after a week is that I actually didn't have the £3500 they were asking for investment. If I had that money I would have lost it just like that. They disappeared after a week and even the office they were operating from was closed.
Thank you so much for this video, I always knew MLMs were sketchy, but I never fully understood how they could be compared to cults before watching this
The funny part is that you'll work MUCH harder in a pyramid scheme than in a 9-5 job, even tho the odds of making a very high salary are much higher in a real company. If you're in the top 1% employees of a company with 5000 people, you'll be making a really high salary and can become millionnaire pretty easily with stock compensations, which will also make you more a "business owner" than selling over-priced weightloss products that you were psychologically manipulated to by scamming your family and friends.
@@bellona6356 not every MLM is like that honestly. For example there are some MLM that you really make money without every marketing the product but instead you are using the product to make an income.
@@byronshipp3454 If the main income is from getting people into the company instead of the product you are selling then you are in a pyramid scheme. Depending on how far down the line you are you will just be making a loss period and everyone above you in the chain will try to keep you hooked because you are their worker bee. Their main income in the MLM/Pyramid/Whatever they wanna call it. A legit MLM is easy to spot between the pyramids since the moment you hear about getting more people into the company and that, that is the main way to make money you know your in one and all those you recruited are now screwed because of you.
It’s an age old con, the format for all of them is the same as the Traveling churches... to instill a sense of euphoria to make easier to part you with your money... a powerful sermon, a few faith healings and a statue that weeps tears of blood... softens the crowd up force donations, people will pay anything to be blessed. Same con, different decorations and different venue 😜

And so disappointing when you figure out they just see you as a business opportunity.
Thar happened to me but I was never convinced
LOL...AMWAY pitch incoming
Short, simple, true and to the point. Well said!
Just happened to me a few days ago. It made me really sad I really thought he wanted to reconnect
God bless ❤
I pray you are in a better place now with people who genuinely care about you. Be blessed. 💕
Incredible how these sects operate legally under our noses
Woooow.. what a reality. You pretty strong for all that you went through. It's never too late to find your inner strong self again right?
All the very best though!!
Thank you for sharing that. I'm so glad you got out of it, and I'm sending you lots of love ❤
Wise Dad!

But when I went to meetings, the detractors were always painted as people without a job, irresponsible, living in their mother's basement. Yet here I was, a college educated numbers guy with a good job, asking questions.

Good point. IIRC Mary Kay and Avon weren't pyramid schemes since they did have actual product to sell. Do you know if they also had the recruiting part? That's where the pyramid scheme takes over.
You wouldnt have made much money for sure. Those companies wont give you much of a commission because it has to go the the big boys at the top

It’s only one couple but I’m glad I was able to save them because they were in a vulnerable state.
well done👍👍
How did you do it? I have a friend who is brainwashed by it despite me speaking out many many times
You saved many more from MLM when you convinced the couple. Thank you.
Enjoy free coffee and snacks and leave 😄

I remember my sister getting into Amway back in the 80s. Her obstetrician recruited her!
She left when she was on the delivery table and he was trying to recruit an attending nurse.
It hit me when you said MLM's prey on stay home moms.He had a built in downline as an OB/gyn.
Makes you wonder why a physician would need to generate money.
Fun fact Shanan Watts was heavily into MLM's. Putting huge financial issues on the family finances.
MLM's are definitely a cult!
Someone from amway is trying to recruit me
Yes shanan watts was in it. Still feel sad for her and girls 😢😢
Did you get her money back?
What was the "job"? Was it door to door knives? That one is common for doing the "job interview" setup.
And yeah, did they refund the money? What made your girlfriend fall for if?
Amway. I once knew a medical student who dropped out if school to sell Amway. At that time Amway had people invite friends over for dinner and then spring it on them. They NEVER announced that it was an Amway pitch. Just the deception and trickery was disgusting.

They might show you their upline’s upline’s upline’s 1099, but they won’t show you theirs.
Its a harsh world 😢
If you don't need it, don't buy it. These products should only be sold to those who needs it.
MLMs before you join: You can do this part time! Choose your own hours! It's easy!
MLMs after you join: You won't make any money unless you work 24/7. It's hard work!

Wow! Just like a soldier integrating to society. It's good that your man is free now
God bless you both🎉

Hahahah amway is the biggest scammer of them alll! I hope you get your kid back
Stop praying and move on with your life. Your daughter is a free person to live her own life by her own values, not yours.
Sounds like the MLM I was in at the same age!
The Kirsten Dunst TV Series "On Becoming a God in Central Florida" did an excellent job at showing both the ludicrousness of MLM cults and also Scientology (since their cult was a fusion of the two).
Not the gold digging makes you rich, but the selling of the shovels...
i also got into an mlm when i reached 20 , but i finally left after doing a lot of thinking because there were a lot of things that they lied to me about, even up until now they are still bothering me to upgrade my account

This one hurts because my own mother had fallen victim to one of them
I'm really sorry to hear that man... during the research for this video I encountered many people who had family members tied up in these schemes currently. It's a really tough thing to convince them away from.
I came across this: www.vice.com/en_us/article/43e573/how-to-get-a-friend-out-of-an-mlm-herbalife-amway-younique- article from Vice while researching, it may help a little in understanding how to persuade her out of it.

I once picked up a girl for a date. She said "let's go hang out with my friends". An hour later I was sitting in a room listening to a presentation about supplements. Modern day pimps, lol.

Cult springs to mind. A mirage
"thought I was in a church" oh wow, suprise. Religion is a form of cult, idk why you're so suprised
Sounds a lot like Scamway.
They are super predatory, especially on couples.
You are providing a valuable service to the public, James. xo

Absolutely. Cults and MLM's are very similar to narcissistic abuse
@@mr_khatkar990 Jackass
Their scheme falls apart if they give you time to think it over and apply logic. Its also one of the principles of hypnosis it must be constantly reinforced or the effect wears off They generally will not allow newer recruits to even have 24 hours to themselves often times they will be contacting their new recruits several times a day. to ensure that the brainwashing holds.
I never thought of it that way but you’re right. There are similarities. 🤔
On tik tok era, when everyone wants to see short and funny videos, this type of content is unusual and appreciated
You deserve all the success you have and more.
"I'm here to share this business opportunity with you" translates to: "to break even, I need to rip you off even worse than my upline ripped me off."
The people who fall for these scams are what Mark Cuban calls "Wantrepeneurs." They're basically people who want success without having to put in the hard work, risk,, and dedication in building a real business to become successful.
Most sales business do have MLM system upon them; if u could override commission of another people under ur supervised, it is MLM.
They always say make people work for you
Excellent video.
Right??? Like full of motivational messages and quotes. It feels really weird. Like they’re trying to cover up their bullshits with positivity.
That’s like a wolf in sheep’s clothes.. sketchy as hell
"Logic is bad for us" lmao

Happened to me in London. I went to a seminar in 2003. The energy in the room was suffocating. The only reason I managed to come out of the hypnosis after a week is that I actually didn't have the £3500 they were asking for investment. If I had that money I would have lost it just like that. They disappeared after a week and even the office they were operating from was closed.

The funny part is that you'll work MUCH harder in a pyramid scheme than in a 9-5 job, even tho the odds of making a very high salary are much higher in a real company. If you're in the top 1% employees of a company with 5000 people, you'll be making a really high salary and can become millionnaire pretty easily with stock compensations, which will also make you more a "business owner" than selling over-priced
weightloss products that you were psychologically manipulated to by scamming your family and friends.
Not true at all
@@byronshipp3454 great retort. Just look at any MLM's compensation plans and actual salary averages... you make more at a minimum wage job.
@@bellona6356 not every MLM is like that honestly. For example there are some MLM that you really make money without every marketing the product but instead you are using the product to make an income.
Yes with a 401k doing 15% or more you will become a millionaire.
It's scary how stuff like this goes hand-in-hand with the self-help and entrepreneurship dream everybody is after these days
Honestly, the more I've dug into these things the more interconnected they become...
Yup. Part of the 'hustle' culture we're being sold.
And self-help inherently requires misery, if you are happy, you dont need self help anymore - and thus they would lose a customer
It’s an age old con, the format for all of them is the same as the Traveling churches... to instill a sense of euphoria to make easier to part you with your money... a powerful sermon, a few faith healings and a statue that weeps tears of blood... softens the crowd up force donations, people will pay anything to be blessed.
