This design could be improved by replacing the metal with a darker, cheaper and easier to delaminate material and adding a shell to facilitate handling. I was thinking graphite and wood.
That's a remarkable idea! And if it's graphite, basically anything with a bit of force could rub it off the page, incase someone makes a mistake. A small piece of rubber on the back of the pen, perhaps?

Not only is the tip wearing away but it’s also becoming more and more dull. And no one is gonna right with blunt tip. I’m sure there is a method of continuously rotating it in your hand to stay on a sharp edge but that’s only going to work for so long. It’s really cool but still you’re only going to be able to make use of 2/3rds of that tip or so

It could have been a file, like a tool, not for nails. I don't exactly remember. Long, skinny, metal that worked like a pencil. ISH. Pencil-ish. So my BFF and I used it to play tic, tac, toe on the wall in my closet. My parents found us & were upset and wanted me to wash off as punishment. They were furious when I explained that it wouldn't come off, because it wasn't a pencil. They were not impressed with my Permanent Pencil discovery. Pretty sure I got the wooden spoon. 😢😂🤣
I've seen things like this sold as an "Ethernal pencil". I think they have great use for additional needs kids who're still learning how much force to apply to their writing tools. My kiddos get really upset and frustrated when they accidentally break their pencils or push the pen nibs in, and can hinder their confidence or willingness to practice their pen/writing skills. With writing tools like this it really reduces that risk and makes it something they can learn better without so much fear of breaking the writing utensils.

Silverpoint is a technique that dates back as far as the 12th century I believe because at the time it was a reasonably permanent medium for sketching/scribing as opposed to the chalk/charcoal of the time which could easily smudge. It's ability to keep a consistent point and not smudge gave it advantages, but lacked the ability to create darker values. It did have a resurgence in the 15th century by artists. One such artist was a famous German painter/printer Albrecht Durer, and I want to say even Da Vinci used it. Eventually graphite medium replaced it for it's semi permanence and ability to erase.
The tip is usually made from a material like ethergraf, a type of metal composite designed to create marks similar to a pencil. This allows the pen to write indefinitely, as it doesn’t run out of ink.
Those that I got did not last very long and the writing got harder and harder to be seen. [usual hint to my channel - about Mythology and History]. And by comparison, a normal pencil did not only better, but was also quite a bit cheaper ^^'

I have one. It's functional. It does what it says. But it's also really inconvenient and hard to hold, and definitely needs some kind of handle. It's also easy to lose.
My father is a machinist and at his work they use graphite as a machine lubricant. The graphite comes in rods so he sharpened one to make a pencil for me. It looks kind of like silverpoint because it doesn't have any clay like a normal pencil
