Japanese here. One thing I would like to point out is that No Longer Human is a novel, not an autobiography of Dazai. Although much of what is written in the book is based on Dazai's experiences, the story is a fictional creation. It means, Dazai is a novelist, and the protagonist of this novel is not himself. He wrote this seemingly autobiographical novel because it was the instinct as the novelist, and it was his job. Furthermore, later he actually commit the suicide, but the causal relationship between his act and this novel is unknown. However, I can imagine that Dazai commit suicide like the protagonist of the novel as the result because the suicide act made it to dedicating his life to his literature. Today, the readers feel he was writing his novels facing the death.
I am going to read it coz I have been in a dark place for like, 11 years and I assume that I can relate to the content of this book. I shall see. Thank for this recommendation!
If you liked this book, then you should read works from Inio Asano like Goodnight PunPun, Solanin, Nijigahara Holograph etc and from Shuzo oshimi like The flowers of Evil, Inside Mary, Hapiness, Bloods of the Tracks etc ... They specialize in unconfortable, dark, sad, tragic life changing stories, all set in everydays life. The worst is that what those characts live, may happen to real people in real life, and that what's the most disturbing
I read this manga for the first time a couple weeks ago and it deeply unnerved me. Because in a way, I could see a lot of myself in Yozo which is incredibly sad. It changed my outlook on life entirely. Incredibly heavy stuff
You know, all those people that make sexist and insulting comments on your Dune review should definitely give this video a watch. There is no question that you dear Miranda are a smart cookie that can pick up and emphasize with deeper themes and complex story issues. You only got that negativity there because people were upset that story didn't hit you the same way it did for them. But wow, you really blew me away here. Maybe one of my favorite videos you've done so far. Such dark and depressing subject matter. I was totally unaware of this story and it's history but you did an excellent job conveying it to us and it's impact on you. What you call rambling I call an honest fresh reaction to a crazy manga you just read. Such a sad life ultimately ending in suicide but I think it's a very useful story too that makes us aware and more emphatic to the sorrows that can plague humanity and a person's life. Tbh, I'm not sure if I'll ever tackle it. I believe myself to be pretty stable but I'm sure those darker aspects would probably hit a lot of raw nerves. I had quite a bit of trauma in my childhood and I know full well how the effects of your past can haunt you later in life if you let them. It's hard to heal, impossible really without a divine healer. But idk, we'll see on me reading it. If I do I might use you as a venting outlet to get through it! 😂 Thanks for the video Miranda and for the positive message you ended with. If you do end up pursuing criminal psychology I have no doubt you'll take the profession by storm and excel in every way! So much brains behind that beauty, listening to your perspectives are always a joy! 🙂
6:52 "Obviously that's a lie, you're worthy of love"... I can, ashamably, relate to Osamu with a lot of what he told us about. This book resonates with me because it helps me feel not so alone in the way my mind unconsciously and anxiously has encouraged me to live and communicate with other humans. Where we differ is when he starts using his outlook to suck others in and harm them, when they could be saved (like the girl he kicked off the rock, who had second thoughts as they were walking out there). Luckily I've come to value life over the years (currently 28). But I know exactly what Dazai is talking about, and felt how he felt. What you said, "your're worthy of love" although a fleeting statement brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. edit: and at 9:20 you convey my/our sentiments. Right on!
Hey I just wanted to say this because I dident see a comment explaining this but I read the novel recently and I wanted to say that dazais novel was based off of Yozos real journal entry’s yozo is not character but a real Person even though the journals became heavily influenced by dazais life the character of yozo is not dazai. Also please read the novel version it’s only about a 4 hour read and it brings way more perspective to the topic aswell as context to the characters ❤
I recently also read no longer human and i had to keep reminding myself that all of the things actually happened since they were so bizarre it sounded like a sad movie
Definitely putting this one (be it book or manga) on my pile of Japanese things to read in Japanese. Hopefully I will soon be at a level to actually do that :D

Good presentation overall, but I cringed when you called the creator Junji Eye-to. It's pronounced Eat-o.

Thank you for this!⭐️
I love you too ♥️
This manga definitely made me wonder
Talk to us more often. Regards!
How does this book and it’s character compare to Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment’s protagonist?
The character of Yozo is much, much worse. And extremely sad.
Thoughts?
Amazing book :)
Is this the manga version?
yes!
