This song was one of my favorite songs as a child. I'm 42 now and have been going through illness, and I have lost everything. It has a whole different meaning to me now. It is natural to question faith when bad things happen in your life. I hope that I can find comfort in God when I reach the end, but I am not sure. I'll find out when it happens.
"You're always letting us humans down." I love Andy Partridge for standing up to the bully god. The song is a masterpiece of critical thinking , cleverly disguised in Beatle baubles, that leads to a cathartic crescendo and climax that hammers his lack of credulity home. Brilliant!
my wife's a catholic, and Im godless athiest. but we make our marriage work by not holding our 'beliefs' with too much importance to talk about it. i asked my wife 'what's God?' and she replied 'Google it.' no fighting about God. if He exists it would hurt Him to know how awful His children are to each other. ☮️🎶
''Give us hope, so that we may live''-someone's lucid dream.☮️🎶✨hope is just a 4-letter word in my life. a lot like ''like'' ''love'' and ''life'' are 4-letter words. peace. ☮️🎶✨-j in southern Japan from my wife's RUclips with her permission of course. ☮️🎶✨
Song was originally not on the album “Skylarking” ( I have a copy on original vinyl) This song originally angered me some and now just makes me wonder . All are agnostic in all reality. Pray when you don’t believe and get results from asking the questions you avoid . Can only prove the existence to one’s self . As faith is the essence of things NOT seen … Todd Rundgren production. Peace ☮️
Another definition for faith: belief in the unwarranted, unjustified, improbable, unprovable. The linguistic game some play when sensible standards of objectivity threaten conversation. Reacting with anger to my (our) questions is faith's red flag.
The song is as anything that I have ever heard. And I have Been listing all kinds of music since I was about 5 years old I'm now 55 and my favorite band is the brilliance that is Kraftwerk. So yes I give this song is props but in any does anyone know Andy Patrick the leader of this group came down with a massive case of stage right after he came up with the song never performed again! One must be careful with how much s*** one talks to God?
I think you'll find the name of the writer and singer of this song is Andy Partridge. You are partly correct in stating he suffered crippling stage fright (that's fright with an f) but it wasn't revenge from a higher being it was withdrawal from valium which was prescribed to him at the age of 8 years old to treat a condition now known as ADHD.
The irony of this song is that it a letter to God, but the writer claims he doesn't believe in God. If you don't believe something exist you don't waste time writing a letter to it. The song comes off more as a crisis of faith. It is not an atheist song
Why would someone write a letter to a being that they thought didn’t exist? I have met Wonderful Christians and Horrible Christians. Think that’s the point of the song. Not God’s fault what people do.

It's not an actual letter to God. It's a parody of letters to God. There was a book of children's letters to God out at the time.

There was a book of children’s letters to God out at the time. It’s a parody of the futility of that idea.
