To me, this song is a heartfelt plea to God to explain himself and his actions. Its not Anti God or Pro God. It's believers losing their faith and non believers asking for proof. It's a beautiful example of Free will and the basic human need to ask questions.
That's just my opinion. I'm an aetheist, but I try to see both sides.

to answer your question, arguably you are the most thoughtful and searching of Christians, for this song raises all the doubts, anger and desperate feelings that occur in only the deepest, life-long and most intimate relationships with those we *love.* . . . like (for some) G.

I remember when this song first came out in 1986. I was in an alternative bar, and couldn't make out the lyrics. The next day I quickly ran out to the vinyl store and picked up and copy and listened to the lyrics. Shit! I was hooked. Not only are the music and lyrics great, but the production is amazing.
Thank you for bring back some great memories Salomé!

To me, it’s crazy that this song was made in the 80’s. I understand shit was crazy during that time just as it is now but I feel as if nothing has changed since that generation so this song would fit perfectly in our generation as well.

i personally believe god is true, just not that he is good, it's called misotheism and dystheism
misotheism is the belief that what god(s) are evil and what they say is evil
dystheism is the belief that what god(s) say is good (or a lie) but not what they really are in theory or hypothesis
i'm a mix of both, believing some things said in the bible are wicked, while some of the things said in the bible are good however are a lie
this also applies to other religions for me as well

Seems like I found a similar minded person. I believe in the lord and parts of the Bible, parts do have rough translation. I see my god as not almighty watching old man, but like Truth from full metal alchemist, watches yet doesn’t fully guide. I think there is more in the world. All that matters to my view of faith is this: be king and show equal view. Though, I do believe in chaos.

Personally, I dont think it's all that weird being angry at the God you don't believe in. I grew up Baptist. I believed as deeply and as unquestioningly as most children. That does something to your psychology in a permanent way. As an adult, I've come to the conclusion that God doesn't exist. Yet, for me, this is just an intellectual conclusion. My heart (my emotional and poetic side) isn't in it. My heart is enraged by God's apparent absence. God should be here. That's what I was taught since a babe. Yet God is nowhere to be found. Hence, the anger.
Humans are capable of incredibly deep and paradoxical feelings. It's nothing to be ashamed of. It's definitely not some kind of "checkmate, Atheist" slam dunk in favor of theism. It's not hypocrisy. It's just the wild human brain.

That’s true. A lot of the song was about starving, the homeless and Christians who read their Bible, but a lot of those people who are struggling believe in Christ, and praise him. This world wasn’t meant to be full of hurt and sin, it became that way once Adam and Eve sinned, humans then became enemies of God, and we have a sinful nature that separates us from God, but as long as we accept Christ into our hearts, we can spend the rest of eternity with him. God sent his son down to die on the cross for us, because we couldn’t stop ourselves from sinning, and we had to sacrifice the blood of the lamb, because animals are pure and innocent, and we are not. Jesus dying and being risen 3 days later is what made God able to forgive us without sacrifice. Be sure to spread the gospel as much as you possibly can, we can only help Jesus save so many people. Still love those who are lost, and feel concerned for them. We can still spread the gospel by showing them love and kindness, and also praying for them. Amen 🙏
