Russell, We have quite a bit in common. I too have been teaching since the 80s and have had to learn a second language, Spanish. In my case the hard way! I agree with you fully on what you have expressed in this video. You mention using new vocabulary in sentences, I use this method to learn verb tenses, ie. I live in a house, I lived in a house, I have lived in a house. My students learn verb tenses better this way. They also underline their new vocabulary similar to your box system. Some also use highlighters. This is common practice with university students. Regarding the benefits of a course book, I fully agree. A course book is definitely necessary as the basis of all initial learning, from there one can go on to on-line exercises, computer exercises, etc. but the course book is a must. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and totally agree with you. Success with the Polish. Regards

Michael, lovely to hear your comments. I am glad you found the video interesting. I was just trying to balance my experience as a teacher and as a learner. Polish is a tough one Michael..I found Spanish easier to learn.

I adore your tips and do find them useful and much needed especially the ones on teaching online and using different platforms and apps. You were the person who taught me how to use Padlet, Wordwall and Quizlet. It made the teaching process more interactive and exciting.
    Thank you, Russell.

. I have been studying BSL sign language for 3 years and everything tou say gere is still really relevant. I'm a teachers trained for Clil classes so I'd be really happy to see a few videos about teaching IN English rather than teaching English.

Thanks for these tips, I'll try and adopt the 'word on one side, and in a context sentence on the other side' idea you provided.

Your hint about learning a word in context is such an old tip. Lots of people mention it, but every time I see someone's notes or people talk about how they're learning they NEVER LEARN IN CONTEXT! It's sooo important. Especially because words aren't 1-1 in between languages so if people are using translations for their lists/flashcards then without context then it's very possible they'll use the word wrong and learn it wrong. It's such an important thing that many people talk about, but many people ignore.

It can be hard to learn words in context when you are really low level and at the start I didn't do it in all honesty. But now I am doing even for the stuff I put on Quizlet. I put the word in a sentence rather than learn it alone. I am glad you found the video useful Dakota and thank you for your comment. I was just trying to relate my experience as both a teacher and a student.

@@ttvRussell Yeah, in the beginning it can be hard to learn in context, but besides grammar words the words you're learning are probably pretty simple. But even then you can have short, simple sentences. Especially if they're interesting/funny/strange.

I have found the app 'wordreference' to be an invaluable resource when learning new words and their various contextual uses.

@@DigitalProReview Word Reference is a godsend for some languages, but it lacks for others. Generally though, I definitely suggest it. My French professor in undergrad told us to use it.

I’m curious, what made you pick Polish?
