Going down memory lane with technobuffalo. Jon got me into the mobile tech stuff when I was 13, even though my family or I never had the money to buy any of these devices. I still loved these old reviews and tuff and seeing how far everything has come! Thank you Jon! Im gonna post this on a couple Old vids so any one else going on the nostalgia journey can see.
Front face cameras is an interesting thing. Years ago, Apple had filed a patent regarding using pixels from LCD screens to double as image capturing CCDs. Basically, the screen is also the camera. It would be interesting if this concept becomes part of the iPhone next year.
I waited in line for the iphone 3g last year and was first in line. This year when the 3gs was announced i preordered it from apple. I put in my carrier data so apple could look up my att account. I was eligible after a year to upgrade, i got the 32gb version for 299.
it does have MMS. and there will be a software update, late june that gives older iphones MMS. the software update will give the previous iphone(s) all the goodies of the new iphone except for like hardware features such as a 3MP camera and a compass.
i'm kinda glad it's still the same look because now you can still use back the same protective cases as before and not have to fork out more money on them after forking out money on the 3gs.
everything you said made sense but as the consumer i am infuriated since i got an iPhone 3G for christmas after having my iPhone EDGE stolen about a year prior and now the have a new one and i cant get the upgrade price. and whats the deal with att?
I have the original iPhone, but I do not plan on upgrading to the 3GS. I didn't upgrade to the 3G, and there are only a few new features added to the 3GS, so I don't think it is worth it to pay $200 for just those features.
If you were thinking at all you would realize that Apple was going to announce this. I was quite aware 2-3 months ago. They've been doing it at the same time, at the same conference for 3 years in a row now.
im disappointed as well jon have never owned a iphone and wanted this year to be the first should i wait another whole year or order another phone with better specs?
I agree on the case... I think I am going to wait for a few things to happen. 1. AT&T starts to subsidize prices 2. MMS and Tethering 3. Possible updates to the look of the phone early next year
Right, but im only under this most recent comment for 6 months. Your saying that if I was under it less the price would be more? Would it drop later in my contract?
Thanks John for your input. I think I had high levels of sugar in my blood earlier today when I got all hyped-up about the new update on the iPhone. But now that you put things in contrast, I can really see that what was shiny in the wwc conference was not gold. So, to me, this means that I'm sticking with my Sprint contract (very satisfied with it by the way) and getting a Pre. Thanks John.
How many months until AT&T supports MMS for iPhones? I was upset with the new iPhone 3Gs at first because I have an iPhone 3G and I didn't know MMS would be coming to the iPhone 3G in a software update. Now I know I'll be getting the only new feature I want for free.
So is the voice recognition embedded in the iphone 3.0 software, or is it only on the 3gs? From what I can tell it seems like its just on the new model, which doesn't make any sense to me since the current 3g should be highly capable of voice recognition. Its not like apple to gimp the software of a product just to sell a newer model.
He asked what date the 3.0 software update comes out, not the 3Gs phone! It was supposed to come out today, but Apple wanted to make some last minute changes so it's coming out tomorrow (June 18th) instead.
Nice video. Your opinions were well supported. I upgraded my iPhone from the first gen and I am so glad I waited. One thing you said is that the styling should be different on the newer model. I have some accessories that are compatible with the 3G that work for the 3GS. I am glad that I don't have to purchase many new accessories. Keeping the same form factor saved me a few benjamins.
how is this? I also purchased my 3g the first day it came out, and waited in line. I talked to apple and they said i was only eligible for a price of 399?? can you please message me with how this worked out? did you have the iphone 2g?
How is it exactly the same, can you now send MMS, do you have turn by turn GPS directions, can you shoot and edit video on your 3G now, if you lose your iPhone 3G can you remote find it and or erase the data? But maybe since they are exactly the same you can. I cant do any of those on my iPhone 3G.
3GS is 50% faster surfing the web on benchmarks from websites. Played around with one yesterday, you can really see the improvement, I think it's worth the upgrade on that fact alone.
I also wish they would make the iPhone 3GS look different. And that sucks about AT&T not supporting MMS just yet. I'm from Australia and my carrier is Optus and they have said they will support it right away.
If you already have a 3g I don't think it is worth spending the extra money to get the 3gs. Only feature that I really care about is the teathering. Does any one even use the camera on their phone?
Where did you get this $600 price tag from? Im still under my 2yr contract with ATT using a Samsung Eternity, the only upgrade im allowed is the Iphone for an $18 fee. I can choose a 16gb 3gS for $399, 32gb 3gS for $499. Also, the regular 3G 8gb is $299. Video recording, voice control, mms. Yes, you can hack some of these features but they're not the same as in this update. I was meant more for new customers to join then for current to upgrade. IMHO
I know that if you upgrade from a 3g to a 3gs, you need to pay the full cost of the phone, but I still have my 2g iPhone got a letter from AT&T recently saying I'm eligible for an upgrade. Would I still have to pay the full price?
I am emerging from the dinosaur age in cell phones. I have used a Motorola i730 for years and just pre ordered an iPhone 3GS. The Motorola i730 has a profile feature that allowed me to set which of my contacts could ring my phone. I used this if I was sleeping and only wanted my employer to be able to ring me. Is there any way the iPhone 3GS will be able to do that? If not, is there an app that would allow it? Thanks!
voice control will only be in the iphone 3Gs from all that apple has said. but all the other 3.0 features will be coming june 17. these include landscape keyboards, push, and cut copy and paste along with many others.
You should mention that the iPhone 3G S has an OLED screen and a Dual Core processor in itttt and an HD video camera built in... my friends' friend is an engineer at apple
Maybe they didn't redesign it completely because of AT&T's 2 year contract, and every other provider around the world... Because not many people would by this new iPhone while they are still part of a contract. This could hint that by the end of those 2 year contracts, a completely new iPhone could come out. No?
Not sure if you're joking or serious here so a quick reply. I don't think you can buy this phone at Wal-Mart for one thing (at least not at this time) The guy at the At&t store says b/c of high demand currently they only do direct distribution. Meaning you order the phone in store and they have one shipped from the factory/warehouse. Far as the 2 year contract, that's pretty standar for any new phone with any company b/c they subsidize the phone, meaning you don't pay the actual cost of phone.
How about phone insurance??? A removable battery?? Compatability with third party products (ihome gen 1???) or how about a signal when you call??? Can apple make an app for these???
i have a 1st generation iphone && im trying to decide if i want to upgrade or not - i'm just afraid something even BETTER will come along in a few months... && now i'm very disappointed to hear MMS won't even work!!??
im kinda glad they didnt change the form factor cuz i just order like 3 cases for my iphone 3g lol ( they were on sale for 8.99 so i couldnt help it). I'm interested in the fingerprint-resistant coating tho. we'll see how it turns out.
yeah....... I was thinking of selling my 3G 16gb on ebay right after WWDC since most people won't even know about the new one coming and I would of gotten enough to buy a 3GS once it goes back onto ebay............ but naa. I feel something big is going to happen in WWDC 2010 and my contract expires (who the hell though of 2 year contracts anyway? 1 year would of been waay easier)
The reason why they didn't change the design is so we can keep our cases and save money. Also your are getting VGA 30fps video recording, this is a huge upgrade and auto focus makes the pics look amazing. Also you have no idea how much power the new A8 Cortex inside the 3gs is capable of. Its a big diference.
yes the pricing is all atts fault....and the non matte body WAS pateneted...but it turns out the new supplier couldnt come through till like august or september
I'm glad I waited. When the iPhone 3G first came out I didn't see spending the money on it because not many things changed, but now I think it'll be worth the money. Besides, I've been out of space on mine for a long time, can't wait to get a 32giger!
wait so as of right now when the iphone 3gS comes out you wont be able to send mms messages until att updates their network? and you cant tether either? or will that be an update or something a few months after the release of the 3gS.
PLEASE tell me why the 1st & 2nd gen iPhone can't get Voice Control..... Tell me, Apple didn't say anything about a different mic from 3G and 3GS so why can't Voice Control be to all iPhones........... that just pisses me off
i'll stick with my 3g until i can get the lower price. that wont be until 11/10 so its gonna be a while, but hopefully by then a new and improved version will be out. also, my safari has stopped going into landscape mode, any takers as to why? nice video again jon... lakers in 5

I think you make some very good points. I'm going to be doing some more research before purchasing one (my phone is through Sprint), especially considering price. What I saw advertised both on AT&T and Apple was $199 for the 16GB.
Ok well im kinda happy because i just bought the iPhone 3g last week and when i saw 3Gs i snapped i called att and said you guys are upgrading me ill pay the price but i wilL NOT wait two years and they said because i bought it last week i have a "30 day trial" so i can return my phone the 18th and buy the 3gs the 19th (:

Your video was very informative. I also pre-ordered the 3gs (this will be my first iPhone) So I'm really excited,
Thank you for the info!!!
The 3GS is what Apple should have released instead of the 3G. Why are they so advanced and yet so behind?

What kind of camera do you use? Great quality.

it can support multimedia messaging.
all the iphones will be able to with the software update that comes out in late june
Will the cases for the 3G fit the 3GS? Apple ways the dimensions are the same on their site, but I want to make sure.
im disappointed as well jon
have never owned a iphone and wanted this year to be the first
should i wait another whole year
or order another phone with better specs?
a new ipod touch will probably be announced in september/october
June 19th.. But preorders had already been shipped..i heard..Apple stores probly already have them but just dont want to release them store front yet
I agree on the case...

Right, but im only under this most recent comment for 6 months. Your saying that if I was under it less the price would be more? Would it drop later in my contract?
If you look at the comparison. The battery is only longer if you re using the 3GS for music and videos.
I actually think it will be a really coll feature when the developers take a hold of it in their apps.
Awesome video... but next time, can you get rid of that dot on your wall?
How many months until AT&T supports MMS for iPhones? I was upset with the new iPhone 3Gs at first because I have an iPhone 3G and I didn't know MMS would be coming to the iPhone 3G in a software update. Now I know I'll be getting the only new feature I want for free.

thats pretty close to what I was thinking.. let us know how you like the 3g S
Nice video. Your opinions were well supported. I upgraded my iPhone from the first gen and I am so glad I waited. One thing you said is that the styling should be different on the newer model. I have some accessories that are compatible with the 3G that work for the 3GS. I am glad that I don't have to purchase many new accessories. Keeping the same form factor saved me a few benjamins.
nice review, but a question, do you think this new can beat the "pre" ? or the pre is better cuz it can mms well? or Palm is dead?
how is this? I also purchased my 3g the first day it came out, and waited in line. I talked to apple and they said i was only eligible for a price of 399?? can you please message me with how this worked out? did you have the iphone 2g?

3GS is 50% faster surfing the web on benchmarks from websites. Played around with one yesterday, you can really see the improvement, I think it's worth the upgrade on that fact alone.
in the keynote, they said that at&t will be offering mms later this summer, but they made no comment on when at&t will be offering tethering.
I also wish they would make the iPhone 3GS look different. And that sucks about AT&T not supporting MMS just yet. I'm from Australia and my carrier is Optus and they have said they will support it right away.

I completely agree, luckily I'm on Rogers, up here in Canada so I should be getting MMS and Tethering
Sounds like you you love the Palm Pre compared to the new iphone 3GS do a comparison ASAP
Will the old iPhone 3G have voice control?!
I have at&t and I have MMS and Tethering, are you just ranting that the iPhone doesn't have those features?
do you think you will be able to unlock and jailbreak it
I am emerging from the dinosaur age in cell phones. I have used a Motorola i730 for years and just pre ordered an iPhone 3GS.
The Motorola i730 has a profile feature that allowed me to set which of my contacts could ring my phone. I used this if I was sleeping and only wanted my employer to be able to ring me.

do i have to jail break it or anything or just take it to the sprint store
voice control will only be in the iphone 3Gs from all that apple has said. but all the other 3.0 features will be coming june 17. these include landscape keyboards, push, and cut copy and paste along with many others.
You should mention that the iPhone 3G S has an OLED screen and a Dual Core processor in itttt and an HD video camera built in... my friends' friend is an engineer at apple
Good luck with the screen burn-in.
Multimedia sending. You can send pictures, contacts, audio, etc. through texts.
thats what i was told and read but people keep saying its coming out today? i guess where i am located in the US there not releasing it until friday.
i wish at&t would update it's premier website with the new iphone. it has it on there as an ad but you can't buy it yet..... wtf?
Jon, Would you get a white or black 3GS??
i bought mine for almost 2 months now
i dont know what to do lol
1 question in my head...should i get the new 3G S?
One of your best videos in a long time. Good work!
Still far too expensive in the UK tho...
Nice Rant!
THE CHALLENGE HAS BEEN THROWN DOWN FOR A NEW UI.
nice one Jon
what about the battery daily life time? does the 3G last longer than the 3GS or not?
I have a question.
After the iphone 3G is activated, does it work with ANY att sim card?
Maybe they didn't redesign it completely because of AT&T's 2 year contract, and every other provider around the world... Because not many people would by this new iPhone while they are still part of a contract. This could hint that by the end of those 2 year contracts, a completely new iPhone could come out. No?
was urs on contract or pay as you go mate?
that's true, but then again it's always nice to see something different from the last gen. since this is a new phone
The thing you said about the cases thats not true the 3GS is a bit thiner so they will have to make new cases for it
Not sure if you're joking or serious here so a quick reply.
&& now i'm very disappointed to hear MMS won't even work!!??
hey man here is a little hint..since u only bought it 2 weeks ago u can still return it..
im kinda glad they didnt change the form factor cuz i just order like 3 cases for my iphone 3g lol ( they were on sale for 8.99 so i couldnt help it).
1 year would of been waay easier)
so if i have a first gen iphone that i bought in October of the first year it was out do i qualify for the new pricing
Totally agree with the UI. It Needs an overhaul to support multitasking.
I'm an iPhone n00b,need to know,Are they going to expand from at&t? att fuckin' sucks
wait so as of right now when the iphone 3gS comes out you wont be able to send mms messages until att updates their network? and you cant tether either? or will that be an update or something a few months after the release of the 3gS.
PLEASE tell me why the 1st & 2nd gen iPhone can't get Voice Control..... Tell me, Apple didn't say anything about a different mic from 3G and 3GS so why can't Voice Control be to all iPhones........... that just pisses me off
i'll stick with my 3g until i can get the lower price. that wont be until 11/10 so its gonna be a while, but hopefully by then a new and improved version will be out. also, my safari has stopped going into landscape mode, any takers as to why? nice video again jon... lakers in 5
wow..
we share the same views brother..
I'm also nokia N95 user who currently thinking on buying the new iPhone 3GS..
lets hope for the best..
I'm confused I have an iPhone 1st gen and my contract will end on October. Does this mean I'm still eligible for an upgrade price of an iPhone 3G S 32G $299 price when my contract ends?
your video would be even better with slides of the features or pics inserted in your talk
Oh also what would have been cool is something like when you tilt your iPhone in the home menu you go into a sort of dashboard style.
And (im not sure if this is on the iPhone but its not on my iPod touch) is that just like how you recieve mail when the mail is closed it would be cool if you got weather reports too. Because it looks silly that the icon always says Sunny 21 (well thats what mine says), sort of like the calander icon how it changes every day.
AT+T/Cingular allows you to upgrade based on the amount of your bill per month. I think if you spend more than 100$ a month you can upgrade in 12-18 months.
I bought my Iphone 3g less than a year ago, and I'm eligible to upgrade because my phone bill is over 120-140$ a month. I won't upgrade though, perhaps next Iphone.
i'm updating my phone in a few weeks. please help witch one would you recommend, This new iphone 3g s or the sidekick 09? thanx
Yup! It's around $700 in India too.. Y such a huge difference?
Jon here's the news on tethering:
UPDATE: Apple said it is bringing tethering to the iPhone, but that each individual carrier will have to allow it on their network, and Dallas-based AT&T went notably unmentioned. I'll check with my contact at AT&T and see what they say about when/if Americans will be able to tether their iPhones
awesome video Jon!
Voice control will also NOT be on the current iPhone 3G/2G :(
are there coming out with a new ipod touch?
Thanks for the info man, I'm gonna buy one I hope.
I bought a 3g iphone less than 2 weeks ago, so I guess I'm screwed?
As an aswer for why AT&T won't handle MMS or tethering: It IS actually the iphone "problem", iphone compared to other smartphones like Blackberry or Palm needs much more bandwidth to work on by design. I think your review was incredibly insightful, thoughtful, and your analysis was done with surgical skill. If you are not a professor, you should be one. I think you could teach anyone anything. Thanks for the review, I really enjoyed it.
