My parents introduced me to Nat King Cole music when I was 12. Now I'm 66 and I still adore his music and this is one of my favorite songs. Thanks Lord for such loving parents and the gift of Nat King Cole in my life.
When I was 6 years old, there was a religious shop around the corner from our house, that my mom would frequently send me to, to buy stamps, etc, for her. The old man, who owned the store, asked me my name. After learning it was Lisa, every time I entered the store, he would immediately start singing the song Mona Lisa to me. And all my life, I've been told, that I have a "Mona Lisa smile". This beautiful song always brings back memories to me of that sweet old man and of my childhood.
This was the last song my grandfather sang before he ran out of breath... His lungs was already failing... Now he's working in the Spirit World to spread the Gospel. I miss him.
I just love Nat King Cole and his iconic song "Mona Lisa." Thank you Nat King Cole and Mir11Mir for this posting. I am now78 yrs. old and always love to hear this beautiful serenade. It brings back so many beautiful memories. Gratefully, RobertS.J. Hu. Farewell from Hawaii. May 6, 2020.
Aloha to you Barbara Brown !!!! Yes, Nat King Cole's legacy will live forever !!!!! Take care and God bless you and your family . Robert Hu May 1, 2023.
When I was born August 30,1967,My Dad Got My Name From Nat King Cole, I Just Found Out From My Uncle In San Diego, I Was Very Surprise Thank You Dad For My Name ❤️
A beautiful song inspired by the most well known painting when the words to a song had real meaning and were sung by a true artist so easy to listen to then and now.
Cole was so talented as a pianist and all-around musician. And that voice was pure gold! Taken away too soon in 1965 from cancer, from which he was already dying when he performed as one half of the "Greek chorus" (with Stubby Kaye as the other half) in the comedy Western "Cat Ballou," starring Jane Fonda in the title role.
Nat King Cole was one of the greatest American singers of all times, and this song is a piece of art. I remember listen him singing in Spanish so many songs that I learned also from my mother. There is a version by the late Bert Parks in "The Freshman", but I didn't find any video on the web. This song is like "Monalisa" painting, both share an endless beautifulness.
"The hours I spend with you I look upon as sort of a perfumed garden, a dim twilight, and a fountain singing to it. You and you alone make me feel that I am alive. Other men it is said have seen angels, but I have seen thee and thou art enough." George Edward Moore . . . . Boop, Thank You for loving this broken knuckle dragging cave dweller. When I dream of holding you, my arms becomes feathered wings, and my desperate hopes of Heaven are realized. Always, and Forever, Will
I've been humming this song and singing Mona Lisa for the last 44 years. I finally tonight looked it up on RUclips I don't know where I heard this song but it's been with me since I was born I finally found the real song LOL
I have a rare 78 record of this single, a gift from my brother who has since passed away. A most prized possession, much like my lifelong memories of all his immortal songs.
This is my favorite recording of this song by Nat King Cole (or by anyone else, of course). The pace is a little slower and more contemplative, the vocals more fully evoke the longing in the singer's heart, and the lusher arrangement and the echo of the guitar are more haunting than in the more commercially popular recording.
+川瀬 Kawase, 俊雄 Toshio I lived in Tokyo in 1981 and, too. first heard it there in a commercial and have never forgotten it. Thanks for reviving the memory! Henry
Another tune from a commercial that stuck in my mind from my time in Tokyo is Pablo de Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen. It was used in Seijun Suzuki's 1980 film of the same name. There's a RUclips version by Itzak Perlman among others. I remember thinking that Japanese commercials were a class above US ones at that time.
I was walking by some tents that are pitched on the sidewalk in the city where I live. Two men were sitting outside one of the tents. He was a rather rugged looking biker type. It was evident that he had been what he was for years. He looked up at me as I passed by, and said emphatically, “I know what it is! You look exactly like Nat King Cole!” Believe me people, I could not look like Nat Cole any more. The man didn’t appear to be inebriated or confrontational in any way, and he was matter of fact in what he said. As I kept walking, I thanked him, and told him that I was a fan of Mr. Cole, so I was flattered. I wanted to sing in my off-key voice “Mona Lisa” to be in the spirit of the moment but I couldn’t remember the words even though I know this song very well, and had heard it scores of times over the past decades. My purpose today is to hear the words. And love the words and Mr. Cole’s voice and the music one more time. I haven’t seen my admirer again.
Nat "King" Cole had a UNIQUE voice, and he was a UNIQUE singer. I once read that this beautiful ballad was first offered to Frank Sinatra, but he turned it down. Likewise "Young at Heart" was firstly offered to Nat, but he turned it down. Both singers made a big hit of the song chosen.
Everytime listen this song. My beloved father favorite song, everyday since my childhood. RIP Pa deeply love you sent pray everynight b4 my sleep (39 years past)
According to some old stories, the real model for the painting "Mona Lisa" was a certain baby sitter who attracted the painter, Leonardo Davinci. What makes the painting so interesting was the mystical and enigmatic smile of the model. Nat King Cole sang it perfectly when he asked "are you trying to tempt a lover Mona Lisa or is it your way to hide a broken heart?" Yes indeed what is the real meaning of her smile?
My parents introduced me to Nat King Cole music when I was 12. Now I'm 66 and I still adore his music and this is one of my favorite songs. Thanks Lord for such loving parents and the gift of Nat King Cole in my life.
Same, my dad played it for me at 12 ... I'm now 66 too 😊

One of the most poetic lyrically and hauntingly beautiful melodically. Nat King Cole, the one and only. I love this song.

Thanks for your reply, Henry. In
1981, I was merely a 7 year-old- boy, but I think I was around 17, or 18 when I heard this melody.
