I honestly think Sidious uses precision and high levels of skill because he is able to literally toy with multiple opponents with the exception of Yoda. He was very precise in his strikes and movements in order to show his true power over his opponents in the force by being so old and able to be acrobatic, nimble, aggressive, defensive, and lethal at a split seconds notice. The only way an opponent would be able to actually fight him in a lightsaber duel would be to completely put themselves into the force and hope that they had enough will/power in the force that the force wills that persons victory against Sidious.
Love all you analytical videos. Especially the ones that focus on Dooku and Sidious. I would push back on two points: 1) That he has not mastered all forms of lightsaber combat and that he’s dangerous due to his speed. Source material says he’s a master of all seven forms and I’d be inclined to believe that. There is a narrative amongst some in the fan base, especially since the force council podcast with the RUclips Star Wars versus series was released, that Sidious is not actually skilled but simply fast. The best rebuttal to this is his duel with Mace Windu. According to the novelization Sidious and Windu reached an impasse once Maxe sank into Vaapad. This implies that once their speed was equal they continue to fight with no real end in sight. This means that in terms of pure skill Sidious and Windu were dead even. While Sidious is faster than most duelist he’s also more skilled than they are.
Plo Koon vs Sidious would be a very interesting duel , I think that electric judgement would be very difficult for palpatine to deal with . And it is doubtful he knew he had this ability, he was stunned when yoda absorbed his force Lightning so it is clear palpatine underestimated certain jedi . He even was arrogant against Jocasta seemingly because she was the Jedi librarian
I don't think electric judgement would make a difference. He might surprise him with it once, but that's all. Plo is strong, but I doubt he is fast enough to keep up. He can hit like a truck, but he is much too cerebral to pace a wiley devil like Sidious one on one.
It's funny how Palpatine thinks dueling is stupid while being skilled at it. It's like how Terry in "The Other Guys" practiced ballet when he was young so he could make fun of people who take ballet.
When Samuel L. Jackson signed on to doing Star Wars, I believe he said something like "As long as I don't die like some sucker". So of course, Mace Windu got to face down Sidious himself. But it makes it really funny to hear the fight choreographer say "you're a sucker if you think you're gonna get the best of him"
In the end, Lucas kept his promise to Samuel. His character actually defeated Sidious in direct combat, but got killed because of treachery and betrayal, which is not "suckery". Sidious didn't get his sith name because of his combat power, but because of his talent to deceive.
Nice video, I think your analysis is spot on. I read in an official book that darth maul learned and mastered niman and juyo. So it's safe to assume sidious favoured and mastered style 6 and 7.
I'm also going to explain to you the drill that Darth Sidious is used when learning form three called Falling rain. As a Sith Lord of the Bane lineage Darth Sidious would learn the drill falling rain after the years of developing his Force attunement and what this drill is : practice form three while tapping into the dark side and not one drop of rain is allowed to hit them once this form three is mastered this is when a sith Lord will go and learn the other six lightsaber styles. So what makes Darth Sidious an extremely powerful lightsaber duelist is really simply put it it is his Force attunement when the force attunement is high it is much easier to master lightsaber combat

Technically, Sidious also lost a duel with Luke Skywalker in Dark Empire, though Luke was empowered by Leia’s Force Harmony ability, which allowed the young Jedi to keep up with Sidious’ speed and power
keep in mind that Luke did defeat a Top Tiered Sith Lord within Darth Vader and There is a good reason why people feared Sith like Darth Vader. Also Luke has the same potential as Anakin and Leia is the same. I am not shitting on Darth Sidious because He is the main reason why Clone Wars reduced the Jedi Order was a success and Success of Clone War in the eyes of Sidious and thus in the fog of War made Order 66 work so well with Clone's Success against the Jedi Order. Even the best of Jedi can tired out and their defenses can drop and easier to kill
@@DeathScepter I'm going to have to partially disagree. Danger sense is a very basic/fundamental force power that ALL force users learn. It's not hard to keep it up. Having said that. I agree that SOME jedi would have fallen to order 66 easily. The younglings, the very beginner Padawans, and MAYBE some newly minted jedi knights. But all the rest of the jedi, the mid teir knights, the high level knights ready for their master trials, and full fledged masters would have and should have sensed the betrayal instantly and eliminated their immediate threat. Just like Yoda did on Kashyyk. Again, there are levels and the execution of that in the clone wars was lacking. Example: Plo Koon was arguably as good or the same at being a starfighter pilot as Anakin Skywalker. It was well known that he was one of the premier fighter pilots in the galaxy. There's no way in hell that he should have fallen to the clone fighters behind him. His danger sense would have alerted him way before the clones attacked. But no, Lucas had one of the most powerful Jedi Masters of his time go down like a chump. Just doesn't make sense. It doesn't jive mang.

@@DeathScepter there are certain ways yes. And in the EU there were some ways too. But they were/are very contrived ways. I mean, they literally had to create a race that was immune to the force to present a challenge to the force users in the galaxy. And even then, quite a few jedi masters, like Luke and his family, Corran Horn, and others, were able to hew through them like melted butter. Sure they are mortal. But the most powerful of them could essentially become immortal by becoming one with the force. The could effect things in the living world from being a force ghost or sith spirit. But like I said. I only partially disagree with you. The Lower level force users makes sense. But force users like Palpatine, Yoda, Kenobi, Anakin, Kloon and a myriad of others would have sensed something is wrong like Yoda.
9:20 yes. I always thought that was pretty solid evidence he threw that fight, as he sensed Anakin was on his way. That should have been game over, but it didn’t serve Sidious’s purpose to kill Windu then.
While I agree with you about the style he uses… I’ll tell you just how he was so good… force enhancement. You can be sloppy with the blade if you are just so fast and strong that it doesn’t matter. He doesn’t need to be good enough with a blade… he just has to be fast and strong enough that it doesn’t matter
Thank ypu for pointing that put that Sidious lost that duel with Windu..some people think he did not but form 7 Vaapad was Windu's spealaty and it's a sith's or dark force user nigjtmare because he can?tap in the darkside and use it against them. Not many master this form
As a young fan, watching the prequels for the first time, I always felt like Sidious was holding back against Windu. While I agree that Windu is one the BEST duelist amongst the jedi of his time, I believe that Sidious WAS in fact winning against him, only taking the dive when he felt Anakin's presence approaching (obviously to coerce Anakin to the Dark Side).
Nah, he was losing against Mace (Mace was redirecting his dark force power back at him with his own added energy) and in a romantic stroke of fate (and possibly the will of The Force, Anakin shows up and provides an opening for Palp.
Let's face it, The big Sid was a Mary Jane. He was a 60- to 70-year-old human who could go head-to-head with a 800-year-old Yoda. A species known for their immense force abilities and uber high Miti chlorine count. Yoda had the highest ever recorded by the Jedi...The Plot armor was powerful in The SId...
The Rule of Two Sith were ALL powerful at everything. This is because IF the Apprentice before them found them weak at any subject? That's where the Apprentice would strike them to kill them. Naturally, even Plagueis and his master were master duelists, because if they weren't? The Apprentice would have killed them that way a loooong time ago.
Right in all points. Sidious wants to lord over his superior skills over the Jedi which is way toys with his opponent using Nyman, once he has had fill he finishes them with Juuyo. Sidious takes Nyman and Juuyo and takes them to they're most extreme levels then utilizes them in a way in which Nyman is the ultimate shield and Juuyo being the ultimate sword.
It's ambiguous if he was toying with Windu (that time when he had his blade pointed at Windu's chest), because I believe he couldn't strike Mace in the chest because Mace would simply parry that and kill him, not because Palps was toying.
Not exactly germane to this video, but I want to note - Kenobi, too, bested Savage and Maul single-handedly in TCW…injuring Savage and causing Maul to have to force push Kenobi away so that they could flee. I bring this up to say: if we’re going to quote soloing the two of them as one of Sidious’ “most impressive dueling feats,” then I think it’s only fair that we point out Kenobi did it, too… Too many people sleep on Kenobi. Kenobi and Sidious are the only two lightsaber wielders ever to solo Maul and Savage and walk away unscathed.
I do appreciate Stupendous including a clip from this duel around 5:20. But as the defender of the master of trolling, I felt compelled to make a greater point out of it.
I think I can agree with this. On the one hand, certain sources would imply that the Forms are a product of the Jedi, and so Sith who were nor trained by them would lack them, but I feel if you know you are going to battle someone, and you want to win, you need to understand how they will fight you, and how they expect to win. My usual tripping point is practice; how did Palpatine HONE his skills? I've seen videos where content creators discuss Sith using training droids, or even dueling rain, if you will, so I know somewhat how even Banite Sith can get dome practice in, but I seem to recall Plagueis preventing Sidious from even having a lightsaber for a number of years into his training, and the Sith Lord, himself, was somewhat dismissive of the weapon. Once Palpatine was doing important, or at least visible, stuff, it just seems like he would have found it hard to get a chance. Several of his lightsabers were very well hidden, in wats that showed they weren't intended for typical use, and even his main one wasn't always on his person. He obviously had properties, and off-book sites under his alias, so I guess he could have had training facilities elsewhere, but since we never see them, or hear, and since Darth Sidious rarely had to come to blows with foes, it just always amazes me that he's still so talented. He's dismissive of lightsabers, and knows that the Force is often weapon enough, since he us willing ti weaponize it, and while we see him pwn Maul, and Oppress, and he later beats Windu, these are all much later. He didn't train with Plagueis much, nor could he tussle with even middling Jedi, for fear of revealing the Sith, so it seems it would be tricky to find places to test his training against something actually threatening. He could go to Sith sport worlds, or have his own facilities, I know, but these just didn't seem like things he spent much time on, and since so many other "gifted" people, in other media, practice daily, the fact that he didn't sort of makes it seem forced. My opinion, of course.
Darth Sidious, like all Sith Lords of the Rule of Two lineage, mastered Fast style, Strong style and Juyo. I would say he mastered Juyo to the same degree that Mace Windu mastered Vaapad. Of the other two styles I would say that Sidious has a clear preference for Fast style, relying more on speed, precision, footwork and acrobatics to overwhelm his opponents as opposed to the more static hack-and-slash moves if Strong style.
We need Sith lightsaber wars: Darth Bane vs. Exar Kun vs. Tulak Hord vs. Darth Revan vs. Darth Vader (Anakin) vs. Darth Sidious Who wins? Analysis? What’s our ranking?
I would personally call shenanigans when saying Palpatine was a deadly duelist. Sure he's competent and capable of teaching any form, but his strength was in the force. And someone of that caliber could be considered to be under constant force augmentation such as speed, strength, and stamina. He was fully capable of becoming a serious lightsaber duelist but blade mastery was deemed beneath him. Maul almost outmatched him on Mandalor in swordsmanship until Palpatine ultimately fell back into force use
@@damaskholdings9140 I don't hate Palpatine. I just think he's overrated and praised as the best. And I'm not referring to standard force enhancement like bursts of speed or jumping. He's basically the avatar of the darkside, and his enhancement would be constant whether he himself knew it or not. Think of battle meditation without being drained after or preparing for it, but it's always in effect. That's what I was implying. Blade to blade though, he's too arrogant & and full of himself. Vader, Maul, Grievous, and especially Yoda all could have wiped the floor with him if sorcerery didn't come into play
i actually disagree with the "niman" claim. i think palpatine mastered most aggressive forms. ataru, djem so, juyo, makashi chiefly and probably niman too. and he fought every fight like he was fighting for his life, except ofcourse when he was throwing one. what else did he do? he turned his body into a weapon, practiced all martial acrobatics until he was unnaturally agile. so he was extra. on the twirling sabers, it says alot about his playful demeanor and how he loves his toys, it also is a useful tactic to keep his blades moving around his core target zone to react to any incoming swing. there's a cunning practicality to it.
Before watching the video I was like oh cool we get to hear about the hellish training sidiuous went through. After watching the video... it's Sidious is a prodigy. So essentially he's just good...😑. I guess that is an explanation, but it feels kind of hollow to me.
He didn’t beat Yoda in lightsaber combat. In the novel it says Yoda won the lightsaber duel he just lost when it came down to using the force. So no he lost against Windu and Yoda
It really shouldn’t surprise anyone this is the case. Windu has a form intricately designed to counter dark side practitioners, and Yoda has nine centuries of experience.
Palps got the high ground, abuses Yoda with it. When Yoda finally got to him(by makijg the same move Anakin did jumping UP to the pod Sheev is on), Palps blasted him off the pod and onto the senate floor.
The Jedi are unrelenting...We must hurry and vote to grant emergency governing powers to the Honorable Chancellor Palatine...He will end the war, and bring peace to the galaxy...
That guy was pretty clear. He concurred with Plagues, Sidious is a master of all seven forms. By definition he’s not just a master of forms 6 and 7 then, he just prefers them.
I kind of disagree with this. If you go back to Darth Bane and when he was learning how to duel, Bane was taught not just master 1 style but many so he could switch sequences at any given point in the duel. Yes, he was made to master one style that best suited him, but was mad to learn and master the rest. He passed that knowledge down to his apprentice and so on and so forth. So I do believe Darth Sidious was a master of all 7 forms, Niman was the one that best suited him first.
11:56 - Evil! 😈 Maybe cos of this figting style alone is why he can be deemed - Unpredictable and a very dangerous man, A true dark Lord of the Sith! 😁⚔ - If you like
It was mentioned that Sidious used lightsabers to insult rather than kill; I assume wearing down someone while showing one have the upper hand does just that.
If you ask me, it is because Sidious is the most dark side character in Star Wars. (Read: most evil). That makes him stronger with the Force and more dangerous in every way. There is no nuance, no compassion, no mercy. More importantly, he actively seeks out ways to hurt others, and life around him. He doesn't just act in his own interest, he wants the suffering and harming of others. He is a sadist, and that might well be the purest evil. An hypothetical example: if some sort of Force genie-in-a-bottle offered him power, a dozen galaxies to rule however he wished, and all the darkside knowledge he wanted, in exchange for freeing them, he would not take it, at least not in good faith. Because he would still share the universe with this strange entity, and he would never grant a single being, especially one so powerful, their freedom.
Niman would actually be perfectly fitting with Palpatine loving to insult the Jedi in subtle ways. Niman was the diplomats form. For the Jedi it let them get the combat skill they needed but focus on the force. Of course Sidious, a politician, would twist that philosophy.
Sideous threw the fight. He literally broke the window to get rid of the murder weapon. If he is so powerful in the force, you think he didn’t know anikin was coming. Nothing hardly surprises sideous.
Sidious is powerful but he’s not some omnipotent god. That’s why he struggled against Windu and Yoda, who are champions of the Jedi order. Even though Sidious has more raw power than Windu, it was a bad match up because of Windus Vaapad, which excels against dark side users.
Hey #thestupendouswave I just realized something about the clone wars since you brought up mail and his brother that scene took place during order or just before the republic came in to mandalor to kick out the death watch group
He is the most powerful duellist in his own mind. The problem is he only got Maul and Plagueis to spar, that limits the scope to improve his swordsmanship. Even so, Maul went off to train with Droids since Palpatine got a tight schedule as a politician. Dooku was admitted to be the better swordsman than him . He also got no time to spilt between Chancellor and training Dooku. Vader on the other hand got his own training regime. Sure, the comics have sidious humilating vader in a single sparring bout but by his character, he would not entertain Vader for more sparring with him when he has a Empire to rule. He also has a massive distain for lightsaber combat. If a guy who has no interest in something, do you think he would train. He doesnt have the time to train. No time, no interest to train. You think his swordsmanship be that up there The reason he can easily cut down so many people is because his power in the force, his force speed is second to none . There a reason if he meet someone who can match his speed and power, the flaws in his bladework is exposed. You are right in his Niman and Juyo but he not a master. It just his speed is so high up there. He can make as many openings as he can due to his speed and the movie and novel differ in the Duel between Mace and Palpatine. They were stalemating until Mace pulls him to the window to lessen his intensity to launch disarming strike. Plagueis trained Sidious and impart him a distain for the blade. Palpatine got no motivation to train, got no interest to train. there a reason he look so frail and old. He does not train cause he all force amp
Everyone used force amps. His force amps is way more powerful than the others considering he is like the ultimate sith. Palpatine mastered all 7 forms and other hidden forms. The problem is he had no motivation to further hone his skills. He is like a guy who got a bachelor degree and just stops studying while someone like Yoda and Mace continues honing their skills. I am not saying he not a master. I am saying he not number one
Sidious seems to me to actually enjoy lightsaber combat, too; smiling and cackling in joy, revelling in cutting loose a bit.

This implies that once their speed was equal they continue to fight with no real end in sight. This means that in terms of pure skill Sidious and Windu were dead even.
While Sidious is faster than most duelist he’s also more skilled than they are.
In the movie, Sidious clearly fell on back foot once the duel went to the large room.
@@thanghoang3198It is true that Windu definitely pressured Sidious. I will say, the movies also say that Sidious is a 9 while windu is an 8.
This is why I love the way he fights.
It would be interesting but sidious would slaughter plo however I really like plo
Plo is very powerful but he would have still lost to palpatine pretty easily
I think dooku vs plo would be a great fight near equal in my opinion
I don't think electric judgement would make a difference. He might surprise him with it once, but that's all. Plo is strong, but I doubt he is fast enough to keep up. He can hit like a truck, but he is much too cerebral to pace a wiley devil like Sidious one on one.
@@Blazeyblazeyblaze u guys don't know nothing🤣
It's funny how Palpatine thinks dueling is stupid while being skilled at it. It's like how Terry in "The Other Guys" practiced ballet when he was young so he could make fun of people who take ballet.
“You learned how to dance, sarcastically”
-Will Farrell
Connection to the Force and rigorous training is one thing but what completely changed the game is when he became the senate.
The hello fresh sponsorship got me. The way you said it
Nice video, I think your analysis is spot on. I read in an official book that darth maul learned and mastered niman and juyo. So it's safe to assume sidious favoured and mastered style 6 and 7.
That ad segway 🤣💯 they should pay you more bro
He did a lot of push-ups and sit ups, and he drank plenty of juice.
AYO nobody talking abt that sick outro?
What do the Ewoks eat on Endor? Dead Imperials.
Oh yes what might the ewoks use for nutritious protein with so many soldiers of the empire, dead and alive, stranded on their moon? "Hello Fresh!"
Yo just wanna say, I'm not buying the product you advertised, not something that interests me. BUT THAT SIR IS ABSOLUTELY HOW YOU DO AN ADVERTISEMENT RIGHT. YOU COMBINED IT WITH SOMETHING PEOPLE ENJOY IN ORDER TO CONNECT AND HOOK THEM! And i loved every minute of it! Well done sir.
@@Canbilly2 Jedi are still Mortal, extremely talented mortal. I do think Lucas's point that even the best of us can still fail and get hurt or die. Hk-47 and Atton from Legends did explain how to kill jedi
That's legends. Great story dark empire

Vaapad is the bane of a Sith Lord's existence
I fell asleep during this video and when that outro song came on i nearly shit my pants
This was the most fanfic video you’ve made
9:20 yes. I always thought that was pretty solid evidence he threw that fight, as he sensed Anakin was on his way. That should have been game over, but it didn’t serve Sidious’s purpose to kill Windu then.
George has said that Mace legit won the fight. Discussion over.
@@justaregularguy115 Fair point
What would make a good series I think would be about Darth plagues and him training sidous
So essentially Sidious is a mixed lightsaber duelist like a real world mixed martial artist.
Is it just me or is this the quietest video anybody's ever heard in their life? I had to kick it up like 20 notches
never really was into Star Wars till I found this channel keep up the good work love the channel and have recommended it to a lot of my friends
I would love to see Duncan McLeod from Highlander take on great grandpa palps.
So sidious prepared for battle with hello fresh.
Leave it to Sidious to make his opponents feel helpless against him.
Here I was expecting him to say the ewoks ate stormtroopers
Well said
It's ambiguous if he was toying with Windu (that time when he had his blade pointed at Windu's chest), because I believe he couldn't strike Mace in the chest because Mace would simply parry that and kill him, not because Palps was toying.
@@bizmasterTheSlavhe wasn’t toying with windu as far as lightsaber skills go, he might’ve been able to win with the force though
Ah yes hello fresh, totally not dead stormtroopers 🍗
I thought for second you were going to say the Ewoks ate the stormtroopers they slaughtered, which in hindsight, I think they actually did...
Darth krayt or darth bane please.
Cin drallig or luke skylwalker, you could do those to.
1:14 the ewalks clearly ate the guards it has been shown they will cook and eat humans and there was an abundance of dead troopers easley avaliable
Around 7:00 you say form 7 isn't comprised of memorized sequences but it is, or there would be no light side equivalent.
I was always curious about this
Try to imagine a dark side Yoda fighting Sidous
One slight correction there, sidious actually lost the fight with windu
If I couldn't do that. I would go with Niman/Jar'kai and shien
Storm Troopers. The Ewoks ate storm troopers. ("An entire legion of my best troops..") They weren't preparing Luke and Han for a spa day.
We need Sith lightsaber wars:
Darth Bane vs. Exar Kun vs. Tulak Hord vs. Darth Revan vs. Darth Vader (Anakin) vs. Darth Sidious
Who wins? Analysis? What’s our ranking?
Vader at every disadvantage here. He couldn't even move most of his body.
@@b.msabol8551 lol
@@datboielijah1234 glad you're out of Russia. The WNBA got a win 💪👑🙌
i actually disagree with the "niman" claim. i think palpatine mastered most aggressive forms. ataru, djem so, juyo, makashi chiefly and probably niman too. and he fought every fight like he was fighting for his life, except ofcourse when he was throwing one.
what else did he do? he turned his body into a weapon, practiced all martial acrobatics until he was unnaturally agile. so he was extra.
on the twirling sabers, it says alot about his playful demeanor and how he loves his toys, it also is a useful tactic to keep his blades moving around his core target zone to react to any incoming swing. there's a cunning practicality to it.
What did the Ewoks eat? Storm Trooper, medium rare.
Before watching the video I was like oh cool we get to hear about the hellish training sidiuous went through.
After watching the video... it's Sidious is a prodigy. So essentially he's just good...😑. I guess that is an explanation, but it feels kind of hollow to me.
The Ewoks ate the storm troopers after the destruction of the second death star. Han, Luke and Leia were there when t he at was happening.
Technically he lost the lightsaber duel to Yoda
I would add makashi, soresu and shien to round out form 6 and 7.
Makashi + soresu is OP af
I kind of disagree with this. If you go back to Darth Bane and when he was learning how to duel, Bane was taught not just master 1 style but many so he could switch sequences at any given point in the duel. Yes, he was made to master one style that best suited him, but was mad to learn and master the rest. He passed that knowledge down to his apprentice and so on and so forth. So I do believe Darth Sidious was a master of all 7 forms, Niman was the one that best suited him first.
Good analysis!
Not that I am an expert but this makes sense!! I thought this myself but it was just a guess!
11:56 - Evil! 😈
Maybe cos of this figting style alone is why he can be deemed - Unpredictable and a very dangerous man,
A true dark Lord of the Sith! 😁⚔ - If you like
It was mentioned that Sidious used lightsabers to insult rather than kill; I assume wearing down someone while showing one have the upper hand does just that.
Force Practice
The Ewoks ate the stormtroopers. I thought this was common knowledge.
Mace windu is goated
Sideous threw the fight. He literally broke the window to get rid of the murder weapon. If he is so powerful in the force, you think he didn’t know anikin was coming. Nothing hardly surprises sideous.
All I remember about this video is the Hello Fresh 😐
Sidious is powerful but he’s not some omnipotent god. That’s why he struggled against Windu and Yoda, who are champions of the Jedi order. Even though Sidious has more raw power than Windu, it was a bad match up because of Windus Vaapad, which excels against dark side users.
I think Shi cho, makashi, djem so/ shien and Niman/ jarkai would be forms of choice.
Btw he definitely lost in the light Saber duel with Yoda it's why he fell back on force powers
Did you just hit us w/ an AD?
You truly have fallen to the dark side. 😕

Hey #thestupendouswave I just realized something about the clone wars since you brought up mail and his brother that scene took place during order or just before the republic came in to mandalor to kick out the death watch group
Is it just me or is the audio on this channel epically quiet
@@dulio3240 As far as I see, Maul, Obi wan and Anakin have proved that they can function as warriors without using the Force.
@@thanghoang3198 yes they can. Palpatine cannot. Remove his force amps, he cannot perform even the basic strikes

I don’t care what anyone says, Mace beat Palpatine in combat. I refuse to believe anything else
Sidious lost to Windu on purpose to lure him in to turn against Windu.
Sidious lost in his duel with Sidious, Yoda actually disarmed him, they don't show that scene, then it was a Force battle which was a stalemate
