  • The best shoes to wear after knee replacement surgery are the ones that will allow your foot to swell comfortably. They must also allow you to slip them on and off. And finally, you want a shoe that will provide enough grip on the floor that you won't slip, but not so much grip that it will catch and cause you to fall.

I had a knee replacement in December. I have custom orthotics because of fallen arches. I have been considering minimalist shoes like Altra. Do you think that is a good idea with my arch problems? Should I continue using my orthotics with the Altra’s? Thank you.

Crocs are what I wore, the strap just had to be on until I left the facility. These worked great, they also became the only shoe I wore for 3 weeks around the house and to PT.

My husband is wearing them after hip surgery and when he got surgery....they are so easy to slip on! 😁👍

I love your videos. They have been so helpful during my recovery. However, I have been wondering why after 10 months there is more pain in the outside of my knee than at 6 months and I could knee without pain and cannot now? My PT had said it will all eventually be fine.

What worked well for me were my Teva sandals - easy to adjust the straps out to accomodate swelling. Aqua shoes sound like a great option, too.

I do wear TAVA. I heard Chaco are good. I bought Skechers. Walking in them I felt good.

Had a total left knee replacement December 2, 2021. At the four-month mark my right foot started developing severe tendinitis. I was told it was because of a gait change with my left new knee. Can you please address this in one of your videos. I ended up getting a Cortizone shot in the foot and getting custom orthotics and told to tape my arches. It has really slowed down my recovery from my surgery with walking and exercises.

    Hi there.
Great videos on how to manage and improve recovery after knee replacement surgery. However, wondering if you have any specific advice on routines to improve recovery after injuries that affect the knee such as tibial plateu fractures and other similar injuries. In my 7th week after surgery to repair tibial plateu fracture, and despite physio and keeping active, knee is very stiff with reduced degree of motion at just about 90 degrees.

I have only worked with 3 tibial plateau fractures over the years. In my very limited experience the recovery process is similar. Take it slow, give your body time to heal. If you feel like you aren't improving ask yourself if you are doing too much.

during exercising, my PT suggests to go shoeless, especially for balance exercises. He cites some research that follows exercise of athletes who train shoeless or with shoes - those that train shoeless (when appropriate) have a 20-30% lower incidence of leg injuries. The ankles and toes are all part of our balance, it seems. Any feedback on that??

I haven't been able to wear shoes for 6 months so painful trying to get the shoes on and off. The good news is I'm having 2 knee replacements in 2 weeks.

Post op 4 months, went back to work as a nurse, started having foot pain, 5th metatarsal area. Changed all shoes. Now need to take motrin. Suggestions?

The 5th metatarsal head often gets painful. How is your ankle mobility? Sometimes working on that might help. A physical therapist can assess you and provide some recommendations... along with a great foot rub! haha.

I’m on my 28th day. I am going toPT and walking with a cane. My flex is now 118.
I’ve noticed if I go barefoot my foot starts to hurt if I put on my shoes after lunch. If I put on my shoes after my morning shower I don’t have any pain? Does that mean I need the support earlier than lunch time?

Hi Tony great to see this my PT want to do an orthotic mould for my right leg as my left operated leg is now 1cm longer she’s suggesting a 2mm adjustment with the orthotic
I’m taking her advice but I’ve been in favour of more minimalist shoes and as you said letting the feet sort themselves out
But as this is new territory And appreciate anything that will help
My left TKR was Aug 21 it’s been a long road !!

2 and half years following knee replacement and I was suffering problems and pain.I always wore boots for walking and work safety footwear.Just a few weeks ago I swapped to walking trainers and work wear trainers result pain has almost gone. I believe allowing the foot to move naturally has helped.Well worth a try if you are having problems.
