    I found your channel after seeing you in the Bowman53 Chat - man impressive you can tell the story so well of this show with just still shots and no video - great story teller! I live in the Philly area and have a channel too but mine is more of a memorabilia picking channel although I've started to delve more into cards. Look forward to future stuff - and Go Phils (and Birds)

    That's a very precise rundown. I've been a Red Sox fan since my youth, but your videos have got me knowing more and more about the Phillies. There are no real card shows in my area, and I'm not going up to Albuquerque for a freaking mall show, so these show rambles by intelligent creators are enjoyable for me.

    • @PhilliesBaseballCards
      @PhilliesBaseballCards  8 месяцев назад

      I dig the Sox. Largely I'm a fan of the original teams from the late 19th C. The teams that have complicated histories, stories, and baseball cards.

    Wandering the Midlife card topic after a rough work day I randomly found your channel. I enjoyed this style of presenting a card show. I believe it's far more realistic to how most of us see things. Happily subbed, to support your lance parish auto fund..

      @PhilliesBaseballCards I'm a set builder from the junk wax era back honestly. The newer genre of stuff doesn't do it for me. My era is the late 70s to late 80s honestly. I collect 50s and 60s stars as I can. My favorite player of all time is Wade Boggs, but I've got a awful soft spot for george brett and Mike Shmidt.

    I generally deal in vintage - mostly vintage baseball, football and everything hockey - but I do have a few boxes of modern and ultra modern baseball, basketball and football (and plenty of hockey) collectors can thumb through but I don't have much that I can sell for less than a buck outside of junk wax and lower grade vintage 70's commons and minor/semi-stars.. Look, I put all of my stars/HOF'ers etc in sleeves and toploaders because presentation is important to me - and supplies cost money - I mean a toploader is a quarter, not only that but it's time and numerous other expenses I need to recoup to make doing shows worthwhile.. And don't get me wrong - I love the hobby, I've been in the hobby since the late 80's, I love the environment but money and profit matters.. I have at least a million cards, 500K of which are quality desirable cards that sell - but having such an inventory requires space and space is money.. Not only that but you cant buy much of anything on eBay for less than a buck unless you take your time to weed cards out - and again time is money... Not to mention I keep all of my inventory organized by year, and in numerical order - to make it easier for set collectors to walk into a show with their list and they can easily find what they need or what they want instead of having to dig though a bunch of random cards - and for that I expect to be compensated - because I took the time to do it for them, moreover the cards are in pristine toploaders and in many cases - team set bags and all of that jazz is money... And look I do my best to get collectors the cards they need/want at a fair price but supply and demand plays a role in a cards value - so I understand that dealer that jacked up his price on the Bryce Harper Rookie. I mean you're obviously interested in the card, and you're certainly not the only collector... And sure, you can get it on eBay - but you also (depending on where you live) have 10%+ in sales tax, and the cost of shipping and of course you've never physically seen the card. You're trusting someone you've never met to meet their description and your expectations in a promptly matter... So yea, you could get that Harper on eBay for $200 but after taxes and shipping - it's now $225-230, and you have to wait a week.... Of course the Harper is just an example, but the same goes for most cards.
    And when it comes to eBay, "cheaper" cards (cards $10 or less) I usually factor shipping and sales tax into the comps for a few reasons - one of which is because I probably paid shipping on the card at some point, but also because buyers usually factor in shipping when they buy a cheaper card. I mean a card that's 4.99 buy it now + 1.99 shipping + 10% sales tax is a $7.50 dollar card in my mind - so you can get the card right now for $5 or you can try to find one on eBay that's cheaper and has free shipping... I suppose what I'm saying is that when it comes to "wheeling and dealing" and the fun stuff that comes with the territory - a lot of people forget about the other fees and costs associated..
    Look, my point is that some collectors - mostly the old school guys - don't think about any of that and immediately assume I'm in the hobby to rip collectors off - like I'm some sort of corporation price-gouging my customers because I cant take 50% off my asking price - and I've had collectors tell me as much... I mean I can work with collectors/customers, but generally cards I have priced at a buck or two - that's usually the best I can go unless they want to buy "bulk" or at the very least a handful of cards. And of course if you're spending money with me and want some extra cards tossed in - that's fine - but I cant turn my dollar bin into a .50 cent bin, when I already have a .50 cents bin, and a quarter bin... And look, if you wanted 5 cards from my dollar bin and offered $4 - that's fine.
    And I'm not trying to be a jerk and juice every collector for every cent they have, but I do have to financially justify setting up at a show... Also, keep in mind that all of the financial risk is on the dealer.. Look, I have $300K+ invested into my inventory - it's NOT my collection - it's an inventory, it's all for sale or trade, so it needs to be treated as such - and if I didn't, then I wouldn't be in business - hence I wouldn't be able to get collectors the cards they enjoy, want and need and I deal in a lot of unusual stuff - items you generally will only see at the National or larger card shows... I mean I have plenty of the "usual" stuff, but I also have a lot of the niche - stuff you cant usually even find on eBay - and it takes time and money to find that stuff and bring it to market. I do price my stuff on the higher side, but I only do that because I expect collectors to make offers, so I price accordingly.
    Anyway, I had a few minutes today to lay that out - I know most collectors understand this, but sometimes it has to be said..

      I get that dealers have overhead and expenses. Had the Harper been marked at $350 to start, it's a different interaction entirely. But, it was marked at $225. And then the price was arbitrarily moved. So I gave my business to someone else.

    Great content, I just discovered your channel and am really enjoying it. I have to say, nothing turns me off more than a dealer that jacks up the price just because he thinks its the only one at the show. $100 above comps? I gladly walk away from that table.

    Really nice pickups! The pre-war lot was a really good get. The T206s look great. I have definitely found that building a rapport with dealers goes a long way and being a noticeable collector instead of saying “ I got to make money back so I can only way 70% of comps, bro” also helps
