Sales and Scores from Local Card Stores
Didn’t know the story of the fight with Frank Thomas. I think for all he had to endure it was a good career. And he did it his way. I can hear Old Blue Eyes crooning “I did it My Way” in the background. Almost.
Baseball has a sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly,....but the best sacrifice play was made by Mr. Flood. Thanks for sharing this incredibke story. You are the best!
One of the greatest sacrifices in baseball history
What a story!!! Thank you so much for sharing. Always enjoy your videos and learning the game within the game.
Great video. I'm glad Dick Allen finally got into the HOF, it was long over do.
Agreed.
I remember he had a very good season with the Dodgers when I was a kid, but the fans never seemed to be happy with him.
The fans hated him everywhere. Only in his MVP year did the Chicago fans soften a bit.
I know the name Dick Allen. I did not know much about his career however. Thanks for sharing all the good info. I have some of his 70s cards, but I don’t have anything from those early years yet. I do have a couple of the All-Star cards with some of the other Hall of Famer’s 👍🏻
His cards are going up!
Nice vid! I’ve got his 1966 RBI leaders card, it’s one of my favorites because it has him, Clemente and hammerin hank. Ill have to add the HR leaders card, I didn’t know it existed.
A new chase card!
Thank you for redirecting me to this video from your new video. I definitely did not know this story.
It's my favorite vid that I've made. Great story!
Terrific presentation as always, but one quibble. Tommy John was not a young pitcher when traded for Dick Allen. John was a 29 year old 9 season veteran with 82 wins and an All-Star selection under his belt.
Ha, point taken. It was before the elbow injury and surgery and resulting fame.
Tommy Brown has died, January 15th, 2025. He was 97. RIP Tommy!
Thanks for all the education! I'd forgotten that Dick Allen played for the Travelers, and I'd never known that he was once MLB's highest paid player. I do remember the odious racism of the 1960s, especially in the North, when all he asked was to be called by the name by which family and friends knew him, rather than be clumsily cast into some vapid Richie Ashburn symbology. Side note: I'm not familiar with his rookie values the e past few years, but during the pandemic, I listed his rookie, all wax stained, for a $9 minimum bid. It fetched $91 and change. It's sad that some guys don't get respect till they're at death's door. He was never controversial -- the crude and smarmy behavior of so many embarrassing Americans created the controversy. Thanks for this monumental video.
I did a residency at Philadelphia General Hospital in 1974-75. when he returned to the Phillies . The fans were still booing him. He was an incredible player but not always well loved sadly. Great review of his cards.
Thank you! I have most his playing days cards. Not a card, but I always thought his 1972 Sports Illustrated cover was a classic. Wish I could hit the like button 10 times.
That is a very cool SI cover, just looked it up.
Need something happier to watch after the Lions lost last night. Seeing you have a video up became my go-to. Love your channel!
Tough game! Commanders just exploded with offense in the 2nd Q.
Always loved Rich/Richie/Dick. I have been picking up signed cards here and there over the last ten years for $20-30 throughout and glad he and my favorite player of all time Dave Parker get enshrined at the same time. About time. Another solid video, sir.
If you've been plucking Allen autos for $30, you are a genius.
@@PhilliesBaseballCardsHa. Not quite a genius, just always was a fan of his and figured he would eventually make it to Cooperstown. I am the same person that has a Hall of Fame signed bat with 46 signers (got Leyland on there in 1992, phew), but I have Jose Canseco on it. He signed it between Hank Aaron and Ted Williams.😮
Thanks for sharing! He is my second favorite Phillie (Ryan Howard is 1st) and it's a shame he didn't make the HOF until he passed. Saw my 1st game in 1970 to specificaly see Dick Allen. Love the 1966 card. Thanks for sharing!!!!
You first saw Allen when he was a Cardinal? Wild.
Fantastic episode! Love that rookie cup card!
Great video!!!!!
Awesome video and nice Allen card run. Thanks for sharing
I wonder if the Giants or Braves organizations, with Mays or Aaron, would have screwed up an incident like the Frank Thomas fight as badly as the Phillies did. The team had their generational super star and they allowed Thomas to control the narrative. That’s insane. I guess it’s just a sign of the times. As a kid in the 80s and 90s I read every baseball book and magazine I could get my hands on. Allen was rarely mentioned. It’s crazy that his name doesn’t resonate like the other super stars from the 60s, when he was clearly one of the very best. Even with all Allen’s bad press, it’s still also a shame that he only made the Hall this year. Allen clearly exceeded the “leader card threshold” needed for induction.
That Thomas altercation undermined his whole career, for reasons he couldn't control. Awful, truly.
I never realized the 71 card was so expensive.
Me, neither! Bring $$ if you want one.
Congrats! What a great team set. 👏
Man, what a team! I want to go back to ‘08
Good team that year. The team now is arguably better in every aspect. 2025?
Rip Phillies guy
Congrats on the Phillies T206 set. Great stories, great video, thanks thanks for letting us share the fun. All the best!
I feel like John Titus was a better player than you give him credit for. Played 11 seasons, .282 career average. His 1905 season was really quite strong. Career WAR of 30 for advanced stats folks.
Love the way you tell these stories. I’ve felt the same excitement when finding a special card.
Congratulations on completing the run loved the story and breakdown. That binder looks great 👍
Thanks for the cool story, Phillies Guy! I like that you "met in the middle" at your price :)
Thanks for sharing. I love your video presentation. Keep it up.
Thanks for stopping by the channel!
I love hearing your stories, and how well you tell them. Well done Phillies Guy!
Appreciate your support
I enjoyed all those 2024 episodes as you built the set, so this was a nice capstone summary. As usual, I'm inserting my comment about educated human beings: Your Robert Frost references struck home, as my daughter once gifted me a fridge magnet featuring the last verse of that poem, his second-greatest in my opinion. She felt it was appropriate for the dad she knows, and it continues to grace the fridge as an evocative reminder.
That's a special poem, full of truth.
And you cracked the Tolstoi!
I crack everything. Freedom for all cards!
Wow! Very cool!! That is one cool team set!! I am working on a Cubs binder with all team sets. I have yet to get to the OLD stuff like this. I have a few 48 Bowman and a few 52 Topps but I’m loving the build! Also that dealer that said 200 just because he thinks you wouldn’t know😕😕😕 why!?!?? I’m glad you busted him, come on man!!!! Well done!
I didn't think I get into the old stuff. I really thought I was done at 1952. I was mistaken! The pre-war stuff is tons of fun, and a much greater challenge.
Great recap.
Thanks! I hope you enjoyed the journey.
Great work! 20 years ago, I had my sights on the Monster. Worked on it very slowly (eye appeal, centered, VG-) and got about 30% and the prices really increased and gave up. 😒 Why does the prostitute from that era need a merkin? That explanation should be in your next video.
Merkin video incoming...
Interesting that there is not any Philadelphia Phillies HOFamers. Still surprisingly an expensive endeavor. Enjoyed rehashing your pickups. Weill done.
Grover Cleveland Alexander, Nap Lajoie, and Ed Delahanty are all Phils HoF from this era, but none were on the Phils for the T205/6 years. All just before or just after.
RIP “Phillies guy” seller……
Yeah, need to find a new source for early cards.
I can’t decide if it’s fortunate or unfortunate that my Mets don’t have any T206 cards……
1962 for you. Sub another ny team?
I'm also a mets collector. In a way it's liberating to dabble in pre-war without having to seek any specific cards.
Nice story, congratulations on the set. I have the T206 Boston Red Sox & Doves (Braves) sets. Fun project.
Red Sox cards of this era are 🔥
I can't help but to say to myself "Phillies Guy" everytime I new video of yours pops in my feed. Great storytelling... Ty
“Content as a merkin on a 19th century prostitute”. Never ever have those words been uttered in a baseball card video. This is why… you’re the greatest on here.
Come for the baseball cards, stay for the linguistic archaisims.
This is a nice set; I remember buying one a year or two after the championship year at our local K-Mart. Jamie Moyer was, and still is, my favorite player. I remember watching his debut with the Cubs against the Phils on June 16, 1986, and Harry the K gushing over the kid from Souderton going up against his boyhood hero, Steve Carlton. When he was still pitching for the Phillies in his mid and late 40's, when all of the other ballplayers who were active in my elementary school years had retired, he became a legend in my mind. I enjoy your videos, especially the ones focusing on your vintage card collection, and admire how you curate your collection. Looking forward to your next release, Phillies Guy!
K-Mart! You just lit up my childhood brain spot.
..broken thumb= no pennant
Sad collapse, with many contributing factors.
Nicely done Phillies Guy!
Seems like we should have bought this in 2008?
Fun rip sir! A little extra info on the cards/story of your Phils championship season! I saved a Cubs Box set from 2016, and opened 1 as well! 👍🏻
Was the 2016 Cubs set from Upper Deck?
@ It was from Topps.
Sorry to hear about Steve. Hope he passed doing what he liked. Thx for sharing your experience.
Keep ripping. Great set for a Phillies guy. All the best.
Thanks for the view. Algo killed this one.
In batting order!!!!
The ordering/numbering of the cards is perfect. Absolutely perfect.
Was not expecting the algorithm to crush this vid quite so completely. 😅
