The black character is just a meatshield for Ubisoft, watch, every criticism will be shot down with "you're just a racist"
Then call Dirty Harry. He is no racist, he equally hates everyone. And does his job as a police officer.
It is for marketing because the controversy gives them free publicity and because blacks and Latinos are a large market. Many Latinos, whether you believe it or not, feel identified with blacks.

There are no AC games where someone actually known to history is the MC. So yes the Yasuke thing seems like an excuse. I'm actually wondering if he'll even be playable since no gameplay was shown and there's a ninja lady also on the cover. Putting a huge promo focus on him could literally be just an appeal to crowds.
@@KazumiKigumawhich crowds though? @@Philip7710 The ESG Blackrock crowds. Customers are absolutely tired of this identitarian garbage.
All the interns there worked overtime to find SOMEONE so they can scratch the diversity itch.
Yasuke being the main character isn't the problem. It's why they chose Yasuke rather than Hattori Hanzo, or any other Japanese character, or even invent one like they did before with all the other protagonists.
It's made by a Western studio with an apparent woke agenda and (from what I heard) ties to Sweet Baby Inc.
They chose Yasuke because of DEI and to have black representation in their game rather than for the character itself. That is the real issue here.
To this day, i wonder why there's so little Miyamoto Mushashi games if at all. I know Miyamoto is the most generic samurai character you can put in anything but he's still a very legendary figure and having a game based on him is 100% better than what they did here. I'd rather take generic but familiar characters than whatever the hell they're doing rn
*Can people stop blaming "the West" or "Western CEOs"* for DEI, Mass Immigration, and the Genocide of Palestine? The people forcing all of these things down our throats, do not identify as "Western" - all of their loyalty and allegiance is to Israeli Supremacism (aka Zionism).
it's clear they tried to change the controversial things we had 6-8 years ago. how many people hated studios cuz they were "racist" not implementing certain characters cuz they didn't fit obv. but still got massive hate for it. now they are doing it or changing it and it's still wrong. that's why u don't listen to the customers, because the customer doesn't even know what they want. personally I don't care if it's historical inaccurate like c'mon it's a game and we all know no matter what it's not 100% accurate anyway. games are supposed to enjoy & have fun. and not getting me a master degree in Japan history.
Absolutely correct. They can gaslight however they want. Their main goal first, was having a black character in Feudal Japan. The fact that there was really a black dude serving a wealthy japanese family for 15 months is a weak excuse. They know what they are doing and we know as well.
The problem is that he is black
As usual they will use the "diversity" as a shield against any criticism.
DEI Ghost of Tsushima
Well, it has proven to work for pr purposes many times... Quality-wise tho idk
Why do you care so much that a black person is in a fictional game that takes place in Japan. It’s assasins creed not a documentary. It’s been very loosely based in reality for the majority of its games.
Tbf, Asmon fell for the trap in reacting to the black guy before reacting to the pricing. It's a distraction, plain and simple. And people are falling for it hook, line, and sinker.

The issue here is that it’s an incredibly controversial decision that should have erred on the side of immersion and authenticity like previous AC games have done.
Yasuke as a side character or DLC would have been way more appropriate than one of two main protagonists (the other being a female) for a game taking place in FEUDAL JAPAN, and the first Japanese AC game that fans have been clamoring to get for ages.
By themselves, this wouldn’t be much of an issue, but it’s *very* obviously done for the sake of “diversity” which is beyond disingenuous.
Why not save a black protagonist for an AC game that takes place in Africa involving authentic African legends/folklore?
Why must they always get the sloppy seconds of more popular countries’ folklore?
Are African stories not worth telling/making?
It’s really not that hard a concept, yet so many people are being intentionally obtuse…
Because everybody knows africa history is not going to sell anything.
Like what do you want to do with that ? There is nothing there. They just got fucked by everyone and sold their own child to become slaves. What a game. Reality would be disapointing that's why they aren't making a game that takes places in africa and rather use historical figures from anywhere else
It's really ironic how "diversity" insults both the source culture by not taking it any seriously and black culture, by never chosing it as the source.
You know what's funny? They did exactly this with Black Flag: Freedom Cry DLC, and the character you play as is solid as well.
Black Supremacists and their Inferiority Complex being Exploited by the Woke Mob. It's really simple. Quite sad really.
yeah they can literally make an AC game that is set in the dahomey kingdom but instead of changing shit like they did with the movie ''the woman king'' ,actually make it as accurate as possible and add a fictional character that is inspired by the people that were enslaved by the dahomey (king ghezo)
These are the same people who tried to cancel Ghost of Tsushima for literally nothing and the Japanese actors had to come to Sucker Punch's defense...
The funniest part is.. if you go to Japanese websites, they are confused as to why there is a Yasuke game instead of a Japanese person

And yet, they study Adam William, Jules Brunet, etc. while having festivals in their honor, and statues, buildings, gardens, etc. bearing their name.
William Adams (Miura Anjin) was better imo. He was never a servant like Yasuke, he was knighted a Samurai and the first white man ever in history to do so. He started a whole new life and a whole new family in Japan. There are statues of him there, he was highly respected. But no one ever talks about him cause "white man bad" apparently.

@@hivemind8817 Will it be realistic or unrealistic if Yasuke can't swim in the game? We have any idea if he could swim in real life, any historical mentions on the topic? Also people can tell which is DEI pandering and what is simply bad media.
Its not even about the race. Its about the agenda being pushed down on us. Game studios need millions of dollars to develop a game, but they prefer to borrow that money from cheap sources like ESG companies. ESG companies are something like banks, but their interest rate is very low, BUT in order to get a loan from them and have your interest rate so low, your inclusivity in your game needs to be high. Thats why Sweet Baby Inc. companies exist, because companies like ESG ones employ them in order to make sure that the inclusivity is present in the game upon release. Its twisted, but game studios still undergo this procedure as it is still profitable.
Reminder:
If you buy the $70 version, you are *not* protesting against having a $130 option.
You are in fact *supporting* having a $130 option, by saying you are perfectly fine with it.
You encourage companies to do this to more games, because they still get your $70 anyway, while also getting the $130 from the people they can get the $130 from.
Same with for example waiting until the game goes on sale and you can get the $130 option for a normal price. You still encourage the company to start with releasing it for $130.
Same if you play a P2W game while "only" buying the Battle Pass because you're fine with a Battle Pass. You are not protesting against P2W, you are encouraging it by saying you are okay with it.
The only way to protest against shit like this, is to not play the game.
So true, unfortunatly people are stupid and will buy it just like they did. with 250 Dollar eft Beta edition.
I'm gonna be honest with you. I'm tired of following the crowd, and I will buy the game if it's good and not if it's bad

Some people in the town thought that Nobunaga might make him as tono ("lord")
A black man whom the visitor [Valignano] sent to Nobunaga went to the house of Nobunaga's son after his death and was fighting for quite a long time, when a vassal of Akechi approached him and said, 'Do not be afraid, give me that sword', so he gave him the sword. The fact that no one seems to know "retainer" means every, single, kind of servant of a household even when the word is a rare case of it being almost perfectly translated is just sad. Hell, even the wet nurse would be considered a retainer.
And am I the only one who is going to point out that no matter how you want to spin it, the guy was just under Nobunaga's protection for roughly a year, that's not enough time to make someone learn martial arts. You'd have more success putting a backstory with him being a former warrior and having a native African battle style than a Samurai!

pfffffft hahahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣
Fun fact, in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Sir Hanush's retainer was killed during a bandit raid.
His job? He bred and kept horses for him.
Yasuke was a samurai in every single way other than being directly stated to be. While retainer can refer to every servant of a household, he literally wasn't. He wasn't paid the wage of a servant, he was a warrior employed by Nobunaga as one of his personal guard, his job was to be Nobunaga's personal spear-bearer. He received everything all other samurai of the time had, a sword, a stipend, a job, and a house. The only reason he only served under Nobunaga for 15 months is because Nobunaga fucking died.
@@niox1920 What you just described is him being a Samurai IN NAME ONLY at best (if he even existed). I really liked the Idea of playing as Yasuke, but once again, its a Buggisoft game so I will wait a few years and then use the Black Flag method (If it is even worth to do so)
I don't think people would mind a game that has Yasuke as a main character with a more historical focus. The issue is the climate we currently live in and the motives behind the choice of Yasuke.
Are you really going to tell me, out of the choice of thousands of actual Japanese samurai, they chose to have the one black samurai for a non-diversity based reason? Even in Nioh, i thought it was an odd choice to have a white Samurai as the protagonist; though I know he was a historical figure as well. That was made by a Japanese studio though, so it was their decision. I think the controversy is more related to the time we're in as opposed to telling a story about a black samurai, because I don't think there was as much controversy with Nioh coming out. I think people are just sick of forced inclusion; black Anne Boleyn, black Cleopatra, black vikings, black Achilles, I'm sure there are more examples. Could we get a story that focuses on African history and mythos instead of appropriating other cultures? Like a game about Shaka Zulu or something?
The difference would be because Nioh was made because the Japanese thought it was interesting and aren't pushing some weird erasure agenda. Ubisoft is. They don't have an earnest interest in putting Yasuke here, they knew they could just make waves and check their boxes by doing so.
I think the opposite. The less historical focus the less they'll care about Yasuke. They could've made it entirely about demons and Yasuke could've been a demon hunter with skills from the church and shinto shrine due to his unique background and ppl would've loved it. They could've made it a steampunk samurai robot thing and people would've thought it was cool. Unless you mean a historical game specifically and entirely devoted to him as a standalone IP then yeah they wouldn't mind as much unless it was telling lies while focusing on being historically accurate. The issue is that ppl have wanted a Samurai AC game. Then they choose one of the most famous Japanese eras and culturally important times where Japan was distinctly unique and isolated. Then they choose the foreign black guy whose claim to fame is being an oddity who wasn't an actual samurai and some made up Japanese woman who still isn't a samurai. Neither being a great representation for the era outside of being an easy gateway to talking about western values around racism and sexism, which is boring.
Unlike Yasuke who had extremely very little written about him. Pilot William Adams has records upon records of his battles and achievements under the Tokugawa.
He is not some nobody, the guy fought and earned Fiefdom and the rightful title of Samurai as he got his own land, servants, and house.

I love how they treat this "Yusuke" character as if it weren't a non-obscure super fictionalized real life person. So little is known about Yusuke that most of the wikipedia article is fiction.
There are only two known facts, Oda owned him for less than a year and failed to teach him anything tot he point everyone started to think of... them... as cowardly animals. and that after Nobnaga died he was sent back to portugal after the retainers recovered him after he fled Oda before his death.
Literally that is ALL that we have on this guy. We have folk lore of Oda dressing him up in full samurai garb and yasuke surrendering instantly in a mock duel. That and he was seen as extremely dull with only party tricks as a skill. That and working shafts.
Nioh: Makes Yauske the "Obsidian Samurai", and everyone loves it.
AC Shadows: Makes the main samurai character Yauske, and everyone hates it.
You know what the difference is? Intention. Nioh made Yauske a samurai because it fits the entire over the top historical fantasy setting of the game. Its much cooler seeing a giant black guy in samurai armor smashing Yokai with a massive axe, than simply serving as a sword bearer for Nobunaga like he probably did in reality. Nioh is filled with exaggerated versions of legendary people from Japanese history. None of them are particularly accurate to the real historical accounts, because that wouldn't make for nearly as fun a game. Plus, the game is full of Yokai, which also don't really exist.
But its clear that Ubisoft only made the main player character a black samurai because of modern day politics. Not because its historically accurate, or because it makes the story more interesting, or anything like that. Because if they wanted that, there are a million actual Japanese characters they could have chosen as their main character. But instead, they chose the ONE black guy that MIGHT have been a samurai. Plus, according to people that worked on the game, the main character was originally going to be Japanese, and it wasn't until very recently that they changed him to Yauske. That makes their intentions INCREDIBLY suspicious.
And, just like with the little Black Mermaid, and all the other race swaps over the lest few years, the criticism deflection effect is a very nice bonus. Because no one can hear you complain about the real problems when everyone else is screaming about racism.
I saw a post of r/askhistorians where someone listed when Yasuke was written to have gotten boons like a samurai and had the strength of ten men. With context, it honestly means nothing because oda was also described to be generous and loved wrestling so Yasuke could've just participated in that. What scriptures say "he was loyal and a retainer" if a historian who tried to argue he was a samurai can't find this infor.ation to back it up, where tf are all of these people getting it from?
This
It's also because he is not the MAIN focal point. Like he wasn't cherry picked specifically to make political statements either.
There is *literally* no difference between Nioh and AC Shadows here. Neither game is intended to be seen as historical accuracy, after all, that's why Ubisoft designed an entirely separate mode in the latest games for people who want that sort of thing.
If you want to be mad at Ubisoft, there are plenty of other valid reasons to do so. This isn't one of them.
Um. In NIOH first of all nobody "loved" him. Second, he was just a minor character, an extremely easy boss. MAIN character was a white guy. So how about they go and make a white guy (William Adams or w/e) a main hero instead? That'd be much more welcome, I don't think even Japanese would object.

So, I guess that part from the Assassin's creed:
"Hide in plain sight, be one with the crowd."
Is merely a suggestion. Pretty sure a 6'+ tall black samurai will have some challenge to hide in plain sight.
Especially in a series of games that always chose a native to respect this creed.
Tbf a guy wearing a hooded white robe with an obvious contraption on his arm isn't exactly subtle either but this is Assassin's Creed after all. I wouldn't put it past them to come up with an excuse for a black man to "hide in plain sight"
@@TheCheeseMovesSideways That's quite true for the first games, but most of the games from the series were more subtle with the attire. The first game took place during the crusade in the Holy Land, we could argue that a white and red robe could blend around Crusader Knights in a much more religious setting. Brotherhood took place in Italy during the Renaissance. Not totally out of place either.
And then, from AC3, the attire combines the recognizable hood with clothes that blend quite well.
We are far from a black guy 3 heads taller than the rest of the people in a feudal Japan. I mean, Nobunaga kept Yasuke BECAUSE he was a curiosity.
To be fair, at least he's a samurai and not an assassin. That would go against his entire code.
@@TheCheeseMovesSidewaysthe first games assassins were so drippy they blinded others 🔥🔥🔥
there are 2 playable characters that you can switch from, yasuke the samurai, and naoe the shinobi. So your wrong, get your facts straight buddy.
People thinking Tom Cruise character is portrayed as Western samurai in The Last Samurai, clearly never watch the movie. He never a Samurai, but a witness, a story teller.
And more importantly a mega star used to open up the Samurai genre to US audiences and launching two very successful careers in the US for two of the Japanese stars of the film, who weren't known in the US at that time. So basically done for money and marketing, not diversity and Inclusion. Money and marketing being the main focus of movies for years.
He wasn’t a samurai officially, but are we going to act like they didn’t accept him in that film, and that he didn’t fight alongside the samurai as one of them?
@@johnjackson9751 I never felt like he's a white savior in the movie. Just an outcast that have to prove himself and face the resentment of the family of the man he killed. It was a great movie. He fought alongside them but throughout the movie he just acts as a mediator
It's astonishing to learn, how many people never understood that movie.
@@johnjackson9751 An outsider becoming a respected part of another group should be the holy grail of culture exchange. So what's your point about Cruise fighting with the samurai?
Couldn't care less about the drama around the character, not one for social issues, still gonna buy the game as someone who still enjoys AC gameplay.
It's weird, but I have to admit, for once I agree with the deranged things that inhabit Twitter, there is no reason to hate on Yasuke being shown as a samurai.
1- You shouldn't expect historical accuracy from a game about reliving the past through a machine and DNA.
2 - assassin's creed series was never one to respect historical fact, like middle east themed assassin in 1800s London?
3- You still get to play as a samurai (which was what everyone one wanted)
4 - Yasuke did exist and serve Nobunaga so him being a samurai is still within the realm of possibilities that COULD have happened.
As asmongold predicted, gamers are hating on the game (rightfully so) FOR THE WRONG REASONS.
130$ That's crazy, I could almost get 5 other game for the same price, heck during summer sales that are coming I could get 10 other games for that price, monster hunter is 9.99$ on sales that's 13 games... '
If the game was sold 50 or 60$ it would have been possible for me to think about buying it.
Regardless of DEI garbage, I can mod it out if needed.
They get their quotas, we get a good game, all is fine, but damn 130$ is crazy, ubisoft made the Mc black to make you swallow the pill of the price.
Headlines are gonna be talking about gamers being racist instead of ubisoft scamming the customers.
Y'all got obviously hard baited and you still bit the effing bait.
Finally represent an Asian country in a triple a assassin's creed game and they put a black man as one of it's protagonist instead of a Japanese man. A historical character too, considering that all previous assassin's creed protagonists were not based on historical characters, that's what gave it away that this is nothing more than a checkbox
Yeah, dunno why he's not just a relevant NPC like DaVinci. If you want to use him for something, just do that.
@chucklebouf5379 exactly if he was a major character that was a close friend of the main character id love that make him in every mission thats fine but id prefer the main character to be someone not actually real
Guess what! You get to play as JAPANESE WOMAN as well. There you go. You definitely not gonna have a problem with the game now…..🙂
Not to defend this controversy or anything but I think Ninjas and Samurais were much more popular on mainstream media than AC. They are.not hurting for representation.
@@simonealcazar816 You can only play as ONE Japanese woman, not several.
What do you expect from people who have used a black and white photo to “prove” that Yasuke was a real samurai… Like there were cameras in 16th century feudal Japan…
Having a photo of someone living more than 200 years before the first camera was invented and using it as proof he was a samurai... Those people probably have some real photos of dinosaurs in their collection, too.
He was real. But he was NOT a samurai. He met Nobunaga in 1581 and Oda Nobunaga died in 1582. There is no way he could have become a famous samurai and advisor to Nobunaga in less than a year. That's just wishful thinking.
@@TastyTardisDude, you know very well that the main reason for choosing the color of the man and his position was not for historical accuracy. 😂
Historians think he was. In fact he received private residence and samurai quality sword. So he had essentially land and sword no Ashigaru could use. He was samurai.
But why we even care? This is Ubisoft smoke screen from those crazy prices.
Guys, you are latching on to the wrong thing here. All the historians agree that he was indeed a Samurai you’re embarrassing yourselves
I don’t have a problem at all with his race but the pricing is insane and has always been insane since they did this with Star Wars outlaws
Asmon has a way of turning his community on itself. Ive never seen so many extremes on both sides. Its fucking crazy.
