    That cloud of the chronicle only ending with a slow "falling out of love with the world" is totally real, the way you articulate it is compelling. A great way to "conclude" that I've found is to decide with your group, at whatever point, that you've discovered another tome of history detailing a separate kingdom. What we did there was to just "reset" the deck, shuffling everything back into the archive and creating a random, fresh world deck (Cole has a great primer on a way to collectively draft a new starting empire). The "story" that emerged was one of a group of explorers unearthing a new, even zanier and extraordinary society that was close enough geographically with the "known" world to have some overlap, but not much. This had a very Lord of the Ringsy vibe to it, of vast empty lands between the two kingdoms, with the extent to which the two societies being contemporary in timeline ultimately being unknown (and for us the players to imagine individually). We loved the newness but were also delighted by the cards that overlapped between the two worlds. If you've been writing down the history of your games, a fresh start adds an exciting twist and kicks the storm clouds far, far down the road, farther than any one human foot can kick. Of course, this only delays the inevitable ticking on of time in our lives and our relationship with these cultures. But that's life, baby! Us humans and our feet are delighted by discovering new worlds... and then we die.

    Thanks for your thoughts! So the hardest task is to find a matching group that sticks with it..

    I agree that Oath's strongest aspect is its storytelling. I also like the questions it asks about how history gets recorded/repeated, and how change does or does not come to a particular regime. That said, I have enjoyed every game I've played, whether part of a continuing chronicle or not. It does require creative coalition building sometimes, and the various Oaths (win conditions) complicate that, which I find compelling

    It is always super interesting to hear thoughts about Oath. It's such an interesting unique beast.
    But man, it just does a few things 'wrong', and I can't get over that.

    What are your thoughts on the solo play?

    Couldn’t agree more. It’s super unsatisfying. Simply because it does not provide a proper dramatic arc. Ultimately it therefore seemed pointless to me. I can’t play 20 games to experience (maybe) a few highs that ultimately however don’t change anything because it keeps going and going and the arc has no end.
    You absolutely nailed it. I haven’t seen a single person review it in this depth. Most complain that you need a steady group and one off games aren’t great but I think for me the problem goes deeper than that. Even if you string 3 games together or 4 or 5…Oath is always open ended and someone will always be in the process of eyeing for the throne. And once they have it? They defend it endlessly and then it switches at some point and they eye for the throne and the new king needs to defend and on and on and on it goes.
    For me, it’s ultimately pointless. But so is life sometimes so maybe it’s good commentary but that does not make for a good game

      Yeah I am in a position where I am actively loving the game and some things it tries to say, but I envision myself eventually being left with a sour taste in my mouth when I stop playing. It simultaneously makes me want to continue playing and stop.

      @malexander4094 Год назад

      I think this might be about perspective...It's in our nature to want "a proper dramatic arc" in spite of the fact that time, history, and lived life do not actually work that way. Thing is, we learned to *impose* some structure, some "proper dramatic arc" onto time, history, and our lived lives. In spite of how ultimately pointless that may be. So when you say "that does not make for a good game" & that you feel it's "super unsatisfying simply because" it does not give you that arc...maybe that is not because of Oath itself, which *can* allow players to impose their own "proper dramatic arc," and even an ending, or sense of closure. Is it pointless because it's a sandbox? It's up to players to decide if & when things end, or are dramatic, or have an arc. Just like it's up to us to do that with history, etc. But if you would rather "a good game" hands that to you...that's fine. But then I'm not sure it's Oath that's actually "ultimately pointless" ...I think maybe instead it's a perspective you are imposing onto the history it records when you have played it.

      @@malexander4094 I respect your view and understand it. Ultimately of course you can view this as a sandbox that you can make of whatever you want to and in that way it does mirror life/history of us as a species. That said, I mainly play board games because I enjoy them as games. I think Oath fails as a game for me because it lacks the defining characteristics of it. For role players great I’m sure some can have fun with it! For me though? Not so much

      I've probably played it another 4 or 5 times since recording this review, and still enjoy it! It's a real solid game and is probably my second favorite of Cole's after Pax Pamir 1e or 2e.

      JoCo is great, but it's a whole thing. Gotta be in the right mind set, and it's emotionally draining. Oath and Pamir I find myself more often ready to play on shorter notice, and with a greater variety of players. Negotiation games I get particular about who I play with. @@analog_arnie

    Just like with Root (and even more so), I feel like you really need a steady group to play with. If I manage to get one someday I will buy either of them, but explaining each faction to new players must be hell. Great video, as usual, and cool t-shirt! I love that movie
