  • The situation in Ukraine is growing increasingly dire as Ukrainian soldiers struggle to maintain their defense lines against Russian aggression. So, does that mean that the Russian President is edging closer to his goal of seizing large parts of Ukraine? "If Putin believes he can simply wait out the conflict, he has miscalculated."- strong words from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in support of Ukraine. However, they come at a time when his own party has emphasized the need to “freeze the war”. The question remains, of course, whose interests would this really serve - Ukraine's or perhaps Putin's?
    Our guests:
Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, former Commanding General, United States Army Europe and now Chairman of GLOBSEC Future Security and Defence Council (FSDC).
    Malte Lehming, Der Tagesspiegel.
Yuliya Bidenko, associate professor at Karazin Kharkiv National University, Ukraine and visiting researcher at the Center for East European and International Studies (ZOIS) in Berlin.
    00:00 Opener
02:50 The lack of ammunition is affecting the morale of the Ukrainian soldiers.
04:00 Russia hasn’t achieved a lot of territory in the two years of the war.
05:00 The war between Russia and Ukraine is an industrial competition that the West will win.
05:40 Does Biden have to better explain to the American people why the war in Ukraine matters?
07:20 Video: The situation on the ground in Ukraine.
08:40 Do Ukrainians have a chance in this war?
09:15 The Ukrainian government has to convince their people to join forces.
10:30 Are there too many holes in the sanctions against Russia?
11:20 Taurus missiles can counter thousands of Russian artillery ammunition.
14:00 Is the West preparing for a nuclear war?
16:15 Does it makes a difference, if a country is a member of NATO or not.
    16:50 Video: Freezing the conflict?
18:30 Freezing the war would only help Putin.
20:10 If the West fails in Ukraine, China might take wrong steps against Taiwan.
23:00 NATO-members should give security guarantees to Ukraine.
25:00 Is domestic policy shaping international and security policy in Europe?

@@Qnexus7 it could be that it wasn't an actual possibility. Let me give you an example. The long range missiles require trained personal. Is it so easy to send NATO personal to fight an undeclared war? I'd guess it depends a lot on volunteering. Given the news on how contract armies in EU and US are shrinking (lack of applicants!), it could be that the men simply didn't want to go fight that war. Joining army is a conservative thing. General [ret.] Ben Hodges, I would suggest that he is extremely qualified about military matters & he is very familiar with what is really happening on the front lines in Ukraine. Furthermore, it has become quite obvious that Russia's army, air force & navy are not very good at all & they are not motivated like the Ukrainians are. If you watch interviews with Hodges where Hodges has enough time to describe in detail his logic, you will understand why Hodges' believe that Ukraine can decisively defeat Russia & force Putin to withdraw from Ukraine *IF* Ukraine's allies provide sufficient quantities of *every* type of equipment, weaponry & munitions Ukraine needs, and do so in a timely manner.

He has a superb reputation for being well-informed & honest with the officers & soldiers he commanded. Hodges also has a lot of legitimate contacts within the upper levels of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, so he is keeping up-to-date with the real situation on the front lines. Finally, there are other highly-qualified, extremely-experienced military experts who agree with everything Hodges says about the Russo-Ukraine War, such as General [ret.] Phillip Breedlove, and Major-General [ret.] Sir Richard Shirreff. The front so far is holding. But in the long run I don't see how EU/US can outcompete Russia/China in arms production. And there's manpower advantage. Long term it's a mess. Wise UA leadership would prevented this with reorganizing country according to Minsk. Less wise would sign March 2022 agreements. But completely deranged leadership of Ukraine today continues banging UA people's heads against the wall. It's a sad story.

You need to watch the video again. Lt. General [ret.] Ben Hodges did not state that Ukraine was winning right now. He stated that Russia was making very little gains on the battlefield, and IF Ukraine is properly supported by its 50+ allies, Ukraine WILL defeat Russia's forces that are occupying Ukrainian territory. Given how pathetic Russia's army, air force & navy has proven to be, I think that Hodges (and other highly-qualified, very-experienced former NATO commanders) are being realistic with their assessments & predictions.

Ukrainian, American & British intelligence have all stated that number, and they used reliable methods to calculate the number of Russian KIAs. All three intelligence services used surveillance drones & satellite imagery were used to count the number of bodies of Russian KIAs after each failed attack, and were also used to count the number of destroyed Russian MBTs, IFVs, APCs, and other equipment. They did not rely on blind guesses. Furthermore, a Russian mil-blogger was killed by Putin for publicly stating that Russia had 16 000 KIA in Avdiivka, even before the last phase of the battle. Furthermore, we know that this Russian mil-blogger was purposely under-estimating the number of KIA so Russians would not feel embarrassed. Last, the Russians are quietly mobilizing about 20 000 soldiers each month, and they are sent to the front lines in Ukraine as soon as they receive ome training....yet, the number of Russians on & behind the front lines has not increased. That would suggest that the Russians are losing 20 000 soldiers per month, and the 20 000 new Russian troops are just sufficient to replace Russian soldiers lost each month.
