    This is a card I'm finally really excited for to lead a deck of my own. The back is equally as powerful, but I like that this commander requires some hoops to jump through and it's not all free stuff like GUx usually is these days.

    • @xCratuss
      @xCratuss 3 года назад

      yes i really love both sides of the card but... how would you build him? i wonder if it makes sense to build him on selfmill because of the back.. but then there are cards like muldrotha if you want to play this kind of sultai deck... im really not sure how to build it

    • @DurdleMTG
      @DurdleMTG 3 года назад

      @@xCratuss I don't know yet. I'm a sucker for gimmicks in decks, so if I can work in a lot of snow that doesn't stink, I will. Otherwise having an ability to untap lands is enough of a starting point for control, flash enabling plays (UB has been flashy, plus WotS Vivien and Yeva) and of course lands/mana matters, which I'm actually avoiding if I can because land decks are a bit too easy these days imo (I currently own a GUR Omnath). Because he has to attack, you also get essentially 'double' mana every turn if he survives, making main phase plays possible for both with full mana if you want.
      Honestly I would consider both sides of the card when building (unless there isn't enough snow support), with some abilities to draw cards that use mana perhaps. In a recent deck I played, I'm really enjoying Ormos, the Archive Keeper to get stuff into the grave and draw cards, but that is a bit expensive mana wise.
      As for Muldrotha, it's probably the stronger option for the 'yard, but this deck has the two sided commander. There is also something to be said for not having everyone groan at a table when people are seated, even if Muldrotha might be in the 99. How strong Jorn become will be equal to snow support, of which I hope there is/will be a card similar to the I-think-underrated Liquimetal Coating.

      @@upperplus7953 I guess "cheap" is relative because looking at Card Kingdom the cheapest I can find are the Kaldheim ones and they're 79 cents a pop, for a basic that's pretty expensive if you ask me. Most people just have enough basics on hand to the point where they're essentially free when putting a deck together, but if you're going to be putting in snow basics, lets say you use twenty basics, that's about fifteen bucks. Fifteen dollars isn't a lot, I'll grant you, but going from virtually free to fifteen dollars on top of all the other costs it's not in inconsequential increase. Particularly right now with so many people unable to make money.

  • @johnbuscher
    @johnbuscher 3 года назад

    "Unless there's a crazy combo"
    Well, not crazy, but Draugr Necromancer can exile all your opponents creatures after you wipe the board, and they have ice counters on them. I don't know if the ice counters go away, but if you have the Staff out and wrath the creatures, you can then tap it to bring Necromancer back and you have access to all those creatures. If the Ice Counters stay, having a Rimefeather Owl means they're all Snow Permanents, which means they'll untap if you bounce the staff to your hand and then attack with Jorn, giving you pseudo vigilance.
    It's probably not as effective, but it's flavorful and makes use of other snow creatures, so I enjoy it.

    • @johnbuscher
      @johnbuscher 3 года назад

      I wonder if the Snow-hate card will literally be called Coldsnap and it functions like Price of Progress or Acidic Soil, Players take X + 2 or something where X is the number of Snow lands they control. The issue is, that's highly situational and doesn't hurt as much as say a Boil equivalent, but I don't think Wizards is going to go that crazy. I mean, an Armegeddon/Ruination-style card? Against niche snow?
      I swear if there's a mass Snow land destruction....

  • @icathiantactician9209

    The best hate card for snowlands is Arcum's Weathervane. Its better than Melting as its ability to turn target snowland into a nonsnow land lasts indefintely even if the Weathervane gets blownup or exiled. It may even turn into a mindgame as the Jorn player may want to consider running the Weathervane to just naturally turn their nonsnow lands into snow lands, or to fix them in case of an enemy Weathervane.
    Also its a uncommon that is literally worth pennies.

  • @P4CCHU
    @P4CCHU 3 года назад

    I think he synergizes A LOT with his own artifact. And you may ask "Yeah, but what do we care, we are not Standard". Well... Maybe we could be a bit like them! Just run some clones! You clone Jorn, sacrifice the original to the legendary rule, and then cast the artifact from the command zone! That may lead to a great interaction between the artifact and himself, you tap the artifact to play something from your graveyard and said thing will enter tapped, the you swing with Jorn and in the next mainphase you will get another activation of the artifact AND ALSO, the first thing you casted from your graveyard now will be untapped. Of course, if they destroy the artifact, your commander would cost 4 more the next time, but I think is worth it! However, if they kill the clone... Well, that may be worse! You would be stuck with just the artifact and probably won't be able to have your commander available soon

    Mitch, I don't often play critic to you, but I gotta be for 1 point. You dismiss the second side, the rimestaff, as just graveyard combo and I think that's underselling it. I agree the staff side is not good as the focus, but once you start going off with the creature side expect boardwipes and kill spells galore. I think this is where the staff shines, getting you to recur valuable spells and creatures. Is it the most effective or powerful? No. But, its not only an option but also if you get behind it may get you that valuable spell at just the right second to get back in the game. I'm not saying the rimestaff is amazing but I really don't think its just a graveyard combo card

      This god unwraps all of your snow permanents (including lands) every time it attacks. Najeela has WUBRG: untap all your attacking creatures, they gain a bunch of keywords, and you get another combat phase after this one.
      So, if you can produce WUBRG from 5 of your Snow Lands (either Duals or Basics) then suddenly it just goes infinite with Najeela for infinite combats.
      Obvious flaw is it doesn't do much else, so its literally just an infinite mana loop and therefore infinite combat enabler for Najeela. You'd still need other stuff out for that to be valuable unless nobody has any blockers or responses

    how does this card actually work as a commander especially regarding the commander tax.
    does it count as Jorn when you play kaldring or is kaldring a card on its own?
    do you have to pay two more the next time you want to play kaldring if it was removed from the play?

      From my understanding from previous Commander Quarters videos, it is still counted as one card, regardless of which side you cast from the command zone. As such, the commander tax affects both sides. Cast the artifact and it goes away? The god now costs 2 more as well.

    Isn't there a red enchantment that's basically symmetrical vorinclex for snow lands?

    There are in fact a few anti-snow land tech cards already in existence that are better than those two cards. It's just hard to justify running them in an open casual meta where they are so narrow they are basically dead cards most games unless your entire group runs snow lands all the time for no reason.
    Feyalise's Radiance (rough cumulative upkeep but it completely shuts down all snow permanents while in play and acts like a Stasis for people playing Snow)
    Winter's Night (technically this is mana neutral to snow lands, but it's highly disruptive)
    Avalanche (mana intensive, but one-sided land destruction for only snow lands)

    There’s literally no time when I don’t want to see this card in a Sultai snow deck.
    Having said that he does a lot of good things but aside from snow he doesn’t make you play any particular type of deck

    The problem with Snow lands is that they are Basic. They should not be. They SHOULD have a rule printed which allows you to have as many as you want in your deck, to make them function in a very similar way to Basic lands, but "Snow" should be a supertype of lands and nothing more. No fetching, no scooting under the radar, all Snow lands should be errata'd to be nonbasic-but-unlimited.

    snow hate needs to be like back to basics level power cause all eternal formats you now have to run snow basics if you want to run optimally. Ideally colourless so all decks can run it and it punishes snow and thaws the frost that is settled over the eternal formats
