If there was a single scene in this show that proved why Hiroyuki Sanada deserved the Emmy for best lead actor, it’s that scene with Hiromatsu from this episode. The barely-contained emotional tsunami behind that quivering stare is just something to behold; a true tour de force of acting. Blows me away every time I see it. Loving reliving this show with you guys! Take care!
FYI - their performance was so captivating that it made some of the extras and other actors cry in the background during that scene and after the director said cut, the people there applaud them.

@@robert04872 I wonder what season 2 will bring. Flashback of Mariko or move forward after the battle of Sekigahara (which Toronaga said would not happen. It did happen). One highlight I enjoyed from the series is seeing Osaka at its prime, while Edo (Tokyo) is being built from the ground up that will one day surpass it.
In the context of the show, there is no doubt in my mind that Hiromatsu and Toranaga understood eachother perfectly, and that they both realized for the other vassals to believe that Toranaga was actually giving up, it was necessary for Hiromatsu to commit seppuku. Their words in the scene was just a show for the vassals, but with their eyes they communicated a heartfelt farewell and Toranaga's endless gratitude to Hiromatsu for his lifelong service. 💔
Yes. The two of them worked together as a unit. They understood each other and were working together to achieve one goal. A united Japan with minimal bloodshed that no foreign influence could weaken. They’re like parents who can read each others minds and know exactly what role is required of them to play in any circumstance, and are willing to give their , and each others lives to protect their children.
@arno_nuehm_1 you say she's part of the plan. Ironic how things turn out then. Also, it doesnt MATTER if she COULD or couldnt say no to dying with him... she said she'd rather live than die with him... despite how badly she wants to die. she could have said "my lord wont give me permission and neither will my religion". But no, it was a giant middle finger to him trying to make peace by giving her what she longed for. That's BRUTAL.
I watched this episode early the morning it released...and then had to go to work an emotional mess due to Hiromatsu. Hiroyuki Sanada said in an interview that he and the actor playing Hiromatsu have worked together over the past 30 years, and that he (the other actor) took the role due to this scene - to play this scene with Sanada. that whole scene was just a master class in acting. and at the end...Sanada made that up, it was supposed to have no words spoken. this epi is a gem. this show deserved all the awards it won ( and Tadanobu Asano SHOULD have won the Best Supporting Actor Emmy)
1. Omi is much smarter than anyone gives him credit for 2. It is bad manners to wear armor to a funeral 3. The Ladies of the Willow World deserved better neighbors 4. Mariko said the most savage thing I've ever heard one human say to another 5. Hiromatsu is the ultimate friend and leader 6. There is ALWAYS a plan
The council scene with Hiromatsu's seppuku I think revealed a little clue regarding Toranaga's 'secret heart' - The armour behind him is clearly in shot but veiled in shadow. Sure it might just be coincidence, but let's not forget cinematography has multiple purposes. I think there are several moments in this show where certain scenes are framed quite intentionally, that was one of them I feel. Also, as much as a POS Buntaro has been to Mariko, I can't help but feel his anguish.
"Waiting, the pine tree never withers in winter..." -the majority of Toranaga's strategy of: when fighting from a position of weakness, delay... summarized in haiku form.
Loving the reaction of this Show! It's my all time fav, It smashed the record for a show with the most Emmy awards this year beating G.O.T Records. Can't wait for ep 9 and 10.
This Episode is so sad and so good. The acting is top notch. Buntaro had a rough day, his Wife and his Father. Both scenes made me almost cry. Toranagas oldest Friend and Vessel
I watched the original miniseries with Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune back in the day; it was really good, but definitely focuses on Blackthorne. This show is definitely Toranaga’s. 30:09
31:54 anjin and yabishige are goshawks... Always remember, toranaga is really, really good at reading and predicting people. And using that to his advantage
This was such a good episode. And all those twists at the end where you weren't even quite sure what was going on. It also actually made me feel sorry for Buntaro. First Mariko just cutting him deep with her words and then having to kill his own father. That was rough. I can't wait for the reaction to the next episode. It's nothing short of epic.
Toranaga's vassal's was refusing to go to Osaka because they sensed Toranaga was going to attack, his vassal's refused to be killed by Osaka's defence's they wanted to stay in Edo and defend from there, so Hiromitsu done that to convince his vassals that Toranaga was going to surrender so they would actually go to Osaka for his plan.
when he got up the morning before going to the grave, he stood up quickly, walked straight and didn't cough anymore. I believe it was to show that he wasn't sick at least not the entire time
Tea ceremony is a studied art, mostly by women and takes years to perfect according to the highest standards. It is considered a contemplative art and is reserved for special gratitude or honor. Tourists can participate in it, but it is considered a “show” to demonstrate the basics. To attend a real ceremony, it usually is quite elaborate and several hours long. We were fortunate to be honored with one in a tea garden at one of our students while living in Japan. Like a Japanese funeral, it is several hours of sitting with legs tucked underneath (although we were allowed to adjust our legs from time to time since we didn’t have the practice of sitting like that for hours). We were given a lesson on what to say and do and when to remain silent before entering the tea house. It was an amazing experience. Most young Japanese rarely have such an experience or wish to. It is reserved for rare occasions.
Hiromatsu was not supposed to commit seppuku but Toranaga's ruse was meant for his other generals and was expecting Buntaro to commit seppuku as well, however Hiromatsu knew of his son's (Buntaro) lost of faith towards Toranaga, and so he offered himself instead of his (Hiromatsu's) best generals but most of all his son (Buntaro). Hence, he (Hiromatsu) made Buntaro promised to always be loyal to his Lord Infront of everyone and to live on.
I can understand the comparisons to Game of Thrones but the way these last three episodes play out - this show is definitely its own thing and is redefining how historical dramas on TV (at least in the US) should be done. It's hard to believe but there is still so much happening in the rest of the season and can't wait for the next two reactions to come out.
I just finished this series in the past week, it's a happy coincidence that you are watching it right now as well. What an amazing show it is and it seems that a Season 2 will be produced!
@@tomassali8870 Yes there is no source material. However the same focus on accuracy will still be there and we have history to follow. All that is in doubt is the storyline between the characters. No reason to write it up as a failure before seeing the results however.
@@SocksyyAU I hope so but lets be honest, it could be 8/10 at its best. Read the book 30 years ago. This adaption of the book is decent, omits a lot and focus is sometimes elsewhere but it makes up in casting, production and emotional play out. 10/10 and 8/10 despite maybe good , will be still 2 steps back.
Imagine ending your life to give someone else's plan a better chance of succeeding. Imagine asking a friend to do it to further your own agenda. Maybe he was sick, maybe he wasn't. If he wasn't, he absolutely should be keeping up the act even when he believes nobody's watching, or listening.
Hiromatsu pushed Toranaga back with his life. It was great support. I miss Hiromatsu. He is a very big actor with a deep career in period dramas and also in comedies. Like any actor...I don't think SHOGUN would have been successful without him.
Great reaction. Watching this play out to an ever increasing chance of victory for Toranaga as he continuously shifts strategy as he needs, and his enemies are clueless.
I read in comments of another reaction to this episode from someone who had read the book. they said something to the effect of the hiromatsu and toranaga scene having a lot more behind it. like they were communicating with each other through their words and eyes and they both understood what had to be done to convince the vassals to sign their surrender. also, I heard that one of the requirements for the actor to play hiromatsu was to be able to have an entire conversation with just his eyes
I think Hiromatsu wasn’t meant to die there, because he’s close friend to Toranaga, those who wore armor on the funeral were meant to die. Toronaga knew his other hot head generals and was forcing them, to take action, like Fuji’s Husband did. Hiromatsu all that time was confused, because he didn’t believe Toronaga was surrendering. And when he saw on the meting other generals reaching their swords, he understood the plan, and decided save them and sacrifice himself, that’s why Toranaga seemed surprised. And one Hiromatsu’s life was enough to convince enemies, the 2-3 life’s of others, because everyone now how close he was with Toranaga
Maybe it's just me, but having previously heard (in ep 6) how Lady Daiyoin was responsible for drugging Lady Ochiba and forcing her to receive the Taiko's unwelcome attempts to beget an heir, it's no wonder Ochiba hastened her death as payback (note the medicine, and the napkin she hid away afterwards), and why I didn't feel it was sad at all. Hiromatsu's death, on the other hand, I found very upsetting!
