I thought about starting my own guitar channel once - I've been playing over 20 years - but over the years I have realised I can't teach well, I can't always explain what it is I do simply. Guys like Marco, Paul Davids and Asaf from Lick n' Riff have that quality; not to mention that they are the cream of what's on offer on YT in terms of ability and talent; just brilliant guitar players with that special "je ne sais quoi"....
All great names. I like Brian Kelly as well. He’s not afraid to give info away that some put behind their paywall. He’s made several videos on CAGED and even a deep dive on it. That’s stuff you usually don’t see for free. FretJam is pretty nice though sometimes I find myself over my head watching him. His website has no subscription, so free lessons (he does except donations).
Bro thank you for this video! I come from a jazz piano background so a single video covering the full spectrum of extensions and alterations is exactly what I was looking for. Guitar makes me appreciate the simplicity of a keyboard's layout lol
I stopped playing guitar for a hot minute, and this video was an absolute life saver to help me get back and tuned to chord formulas. And the fact that you had all the ones I needed, it’s just perfect. Amazing video man, keep up the good content.
Thanks Marco , from a long time I was looking for a refresher course on advance chords but couldn't find any relevant video which is right to the point . This video sums it up ! Its a really long list and the application of these goes a long way .I Hope everyone put a decent amount of time in understanding every of these chords and its peculiar color . Take one Group at a time . Cheers !
A very very useful lesson for guitar learners. It's always a pleasure listening you play, be it a single chord or a long chord progression. It's really inspiring. Thanks Marco for this useful lesson.
Thanks! I needed something like this. Breaking down the basics and fundamentals and asking ‘why’ helps me understand things so much better!! I can’t wait to watch the rest of the video
Marco, I finally got a chance to watch your whole guitar lesson for this video and it is answered a whole lot of questions I have for a long time. This is such a good lesson and you are a good teacher. Thank you so much, my friend. Have an awesome day. Mai (Thailand)
This was great. I’ve been playing many of these chords for years and knew where my fingers went but never knew what they were called or the notes that made them.
Yes. I play a lot of songs and I don't even know most of the names of the chords once they leave 1st position! I need fretboard knowledge....so thanks for including music theory as well!!
I appreciate what you are doing in this video. You do a great job! After all these years of playing guitar, I’m STILL trying to map this out in my head and on the fingerboard. I own a copy of Mel Bay’s Deluxe Encyclopedia of Guitar Chords. He has several listed that you didn’t list. I’ll go through them all for you, and perhaps you can shed some enlightenment. The book has them listed in every key, so for example I’ll list them here in C major. And I’ll do it in the sequence he does it in the book. He definitely does NOT follow the four family’s grouping as you do! Here we go: 1. C major 2. C minor 3. C diminished 4. C augmented 5. C seventh 6. C seventh Aug 5’th 7. C. seventh flatted 5’th 8. C Major seventh 9. C Major 7’th flatted 3rd 10. C Major 7’th flatted 5’th 11. C seventh Suspended 4’th 12. C sixth 13. C minor sixth 14. C Ninth 15. C minor ninth 16. C Major ninth 17. C 9 # 5’th 18. C 9 flatted 5’th 19. C 7 flatted 9 20. C 7 # 9 21. C 6 add 9 22. C eleventh 23. C aug eleventh 24. C thirteenth 25. C 13 - 9 26. 13 -9-5 A totally different approach. And he’s got several that you didn’t list. I’m so confused!
Thank you sir since i had started watching your videos i am literally getting satisfied with your lessons and after i play them at night after my day i feel relaxed and want to learn more about music thank you so much for this btw love from India
The only trouble I had was fallowing your finger placement. I’d say maybe just go a tiny bit slower. At times there are some quick jumps that had me feeling like I missed something. Otherwise I love your style.
Fuuuuuuuukkkkkkkkk I've Been Watching This Video Since 2019 And Every Time I Open This Theory I Fell Asleep But Today I Understood The Shapes Because In This Year's I've Learned The Fretboard Now Everything Is Making Sense Whatever Marco Is Doing Well Lucky For Me I Haven't Left You And Open This Video Again Today ❤️❤️❤️
very good video, very thorough, very clear, very well thought out in its overall design , well ... just a damn good guitar lesson all around. thank you very much.
Alots of people they want to good at guitar by search how to play this song ot these song on youtube, and they follow the instructor of that song, buy they don't understant the theory, very sad time,
Retune in 4ths.. then you have to learn 1/3 of the chord/scale/arpeggios. ( can play any Arpeggio with only two shapes and done, they all look the same on all strings).
2nd comment, as a sax player who uses guitar as my harmony instrument it's worth mentioning that, unlike piano, you cannot play all the the notes in some of the extended chords. You have to be smart knowing which notes to leave out. Always best to keep the third and seventh as they give the character of the harmony.
I wish every youtube tutorial was laid out like this. Includes the simplest of chords but wastes no time. Great vid for any level of player.
This video is mind blowing! It just simplifies things so well. For me it was like a blindfold was lifted.
The fact that he had to say "beautiful" after almost every type of chord just sums up everything about music.

thats the idea. u gotta buy his charts
Just go into settings and slow it down yourself to 1/2 or even 1/4 speed. It sounds weird but gives you plenty of time to see exactly what he's doing.
