- "The world has everybody else. It doesn't make sense to pretend to be someone else. We have that already. The only thing that we don't have is you and how weird you are inherently. That's the good shit the stuff that makes you a little bit broken or a little bit off-kilter, a little bit strange, a little bit awkward and uncomfortable in your own skin. That's the best part. That's why people are so amazing and so interesting, not because they all look the same. Be a little bit ugly. I find beauty in it." In this episode of String Theory, we speak with Frank Iero about his history with My Chemical Romance, touring the world, discovering who he was as a musician, his inspirations, and more.
String Theory is a web series from Ernie Ball that explores the sonic origins of some of music's most innovative players.
Frank Iero relies on Ernie Ball Burly Slinky electric guitar strings. You can find them here: ernieb.al/BurlySlinky

man this dude has soo many guitars, love how he has a little story for almost every single one it's really sweet
Yeah what's he got? 50+?
@@tosh61 Seems like it. He can pretty much have a guitar set up for every tuning and alternate tuning
@Derek Antos can’t say for sure, he does have quite the collection
Holy shit I thought that was a guitar store. This dude is a guitar hoarder, smfh.
@@DwightLivesMatter "hoarder" I mean he is constantly making music, as long as he is using each of them I dont see it as hoarding.
Did anyone else cry when they saw Pansy?
Just me? Cool.
i was about to comment the exact same thing

I cried

nah broo me too
"What's Ernie Ball?"

'Pansy did that.' I'm gonna cry.
What's the story behind that?

Where can we see that video? I may have already seen it but I don't remember a total stage destruction event.
All the guys’ solo projects really showed MCR dissected. It’s so interesting. Gerard’s storytelling, Frank’s raw emotions, Ray’s technical perfection and Mikey’s catchy rhythms. I hope their time off from each other has re-inspired them and strengthened their individual qualities. If that’s the case the next record is going to be one for the history books.
That's so true :)
I don’t think anything could ever top The Black Parade.
I concur... to a certain extent, although if they were to release new material, it would be monumental, especially during the apex of the social networking epidemic.

Funny considering he hates pansy
Leon The Strange I wouldn't say he hates it . I think that pansy has a special place in his heart y'know ? He just moved on
Helena L Leite true
Pansy’s appearance was nothing short from an iconic, melancholy-provoking one. Brilliant.🖤😊
Frank is such a passionate person. And not just about music.
honestly yeah, that’s like such a great way to describe him. He puts so much passion into everything he does and says. It’s inspiring really.
He is also passionate about chewing his gum into the mic
I love the dad fashun he’s serving here

Ambar Rodriguez he’s talking about being unique in music...
0:12 What's Ernie Ball? That is just precious! >.
i know! this was so cute
for a second i felt a little sad that frankie was just sitting alone in his house playing wttbp and then i remembered that mcr are back again and everything was ok
Man, Is good to read again "Of My Chemical Romance"
OK HOLD THE PHONE! THIS GUY WAS HEADLINING ARENAS AROUND THE WORLD DURING THE BLACK PARADE...AND AS AN ACOUSTIC, HIS DAD GOT HIM AN ESTEBAN GUITAR! THAT IS SOOOOOO PURE! My parents got me one too one year! I still have it!
It’s been A LOT of years, I carry around with me every band he was in and every piece of music he put out there. And I never stopped thinking that Frank is just a beautiful pure soul, maybe one of the best human being in this awful times. Thank you, Frank, for being you and thank you, Ernie Ball!
Ilenia Trange not all the good people have a voice. But yeah I agree, he does seem like a great guy :)
I love how it is completely a guitarist thing to see a guitar case and to immediately know by heart which guitar is inside
i feel so fortunate that he likes to do this stuff for us. im so happy to see him and hear from him. thanks frank, so much love to you.
Frank: If it scares the shit out of me, I have to do it

Well I hope so

I really like the way he talks, it's like he always finds the perfect words and that's just inspiring, finding the beauty in this disastrous world and bringing help to those who can't deal with themselves, me... As an example. Thank you Frank Iero.
i want him to show off every single guitar he owns and talk about them
It takes decades to make
MCR, and Frank in genral, has some of the most interesting harmony ever played on guitar. He uses power chords not as a way to make a progression, but rather to add color and spice to a given progression. Its such an inspiration.
Been a fan since 05, this was fucking awesome to see. That octave run from Helena at 18:36 is so iconic to me, it influenced the way I write songs, sometimes I’ll say to myself “was that too Mcr?” Lol. Always wanted to see an in depth gear video like this from one of the guys, thanks for this.
Same lol I always think I accidentally write stuff Th at sounds way to mcr
that’s amazing. i’d love to hear your stuff.

Why so late? I knew MCR from 2002 onwards. You must be a poser.

I have no clue how that is Helena. Someone fill me in
User it’s the Rythem Line, if you go and listen to the song and listen for that tone you’ll hear exactly what he’s playing. The Dominant Guitar in that track is very much Ray.
I love how Frank supports the idea of being odd, in the end this is what MCR meant for a lot of us and why it's such an entity to this day
omg, all of those guitars, there has to be a video of this collection.
i would also love to see a gear tour
PLEASE
I'd just like to take a second to appreciate that every time I hear the story of how Pansy got broken, it's a different story.
i could listen to him play random licks for days

Don’t say random licks just after I’ve just seen frank....
OMG, the beginning with one of his kids walking in is so adorable and wholesome, I can't!

@@gerardwayisajacket9551 sorry!! i swear frank said on one of his socials that one of his girls interrupted, but that coulda been my bad
Music isnt about technical skills and fancy stuff. This dude knows that since the begining, and he proved that making the most awesome melodics guitars I ever heard. He inspired a generation of young musicians.

Noooooo.......... MCR!!!
i usually don’t watch mcr stuff that often anymore but frank is such a nice and charismatic and charming guy just makes me happy that there’s celebrity’s this nice and grounded.
if he bought the guitars or they were a gift, It's not people’s problem.
He is being open and honest as usually showing his talent and being proud of his treasures. Every guitar has its story :)
8:45 for those of you wondering why he's laughing, Esteban Guitars are notoriously cheap terrible guitars.
But we all Constantly Thank God for Esteban
Domestic Cat Just Perfect, that is just perfect. 😂
My first acoustic guitar was an acoustic electric Esteban. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
Lol I remember the infomercials, so bad but so good
For sure. Tried one out, did a quick sound-check and the feedback from the amp, nearly blew the roof off. Those were the days...
Really had to chew gum the whole time while being mic up
Lets be real thats just the mcr way
He does ASMR now this is his starting video
i know it sounds lame but MCR was there when i had nothing else more than a decade ago

4:18 he called him Gee😭
@Audrey Asher me too
How does someone have so many guitarsssss, I can barely afford one
His net worth is 16 million fucking dollars, he may act like a punk, but he's part of the 1%
he also probably has a lot of them gifted to him and stuff too!
Tiff Garcia that’s probably true
yeah but he is a pro
Boldt not absurd rich? yes it fucking is, and his net worth represents how much he owns in assets, not in his bank account.
Me: I'm over my emo phase

Welp, guess I'll put my side bangs on and stream MCR on Spotify again.
MCR isn't emo.
ruclips.net/video/HcRGAqzDDB4/видео.html
@@theirishpotato6588 hate to say it, but yes its emo but with the glimpse of punk rock
@@undergroundnation6423 the music isn't particularly emo but we can't deny they are a huge part of the emo scene.
I think it's so wholesome that a band can be headlining arenas and the guitarists dad is like, "here's that guitar you need for the tour."
Thank you for uploading this in the middle of this VERY trying times. It always brings a smile to my face whenever Frank speaks about anything that he's passionate about. His smile made my day brighter. Thank you again, sirs at Ernie Ball.
im crying hes so pretty
people didn't realize how good mcr was until they split. they were always labeled as a lame emo band but they were one of the most talented bands out there. they still are.
Him playing guitar made me so happy for some reason
9:34 the fact that he kept the guitar made my heart goes jxjshshsgsgsh
WOW, got emotional when he was fiddling around and played the Ghost of you bridge hook around 2:20 on the acoustic. As a musician its so cool seeing that part how it came out of their brain initially.
this interview was beautiful. thank you!
I love that Ernie Ball doesn't need these artists to pause the brand for 20 minutes, but allows them to tell the story they want to tell, so long as Ernie Ball gets a mention somewhere in there.
At the mention of My Chemical Romance, I screamed.
Why is no one talking about him playing Helena...
Or the riffs if WTTBP
Or The Ghost of You
This man is my absolute best idol. I've been inspired by him ever since I was 13 and now I'm 26. If I could meet one person it would be Frank Iero.
Hey uh can y’all hear that? It’s just me screaming
Lmao 😂
One of my guitar heroes and the reason I fell in love with the white les Pauls when I was young
So that's what happened to the guitar with the kids' initials on the back. Had noticed we hadn't seen it in a while. Also noticed that we didn't get to see some of his more recent acquisitions. That's a shame; there are some beautiful pieces in his collection. But the stories of building a band and how he used which instrument was always nice to hear...well, maybe not misusing, but everyone has bad days. Thank you for the interview. I enjoyed the sound.
you can just tell how authentic he is and how he puts his all into everything.
I’m so lucky I was able to see them when they came back. Never thought I’d see them ever. The band that made me fall in love with music.
This interview was amazingly beautiful. Thank you so much for it! I'm a huge fan of My Chemical Romance and every member of this awesome band has my heart. I really enjoyed all of these anecdotes. I almost cry while listening to Frank Iero talking about him and his experience playing with MCR.
I don't know if it is posible, but I would really like to watch an interview like this with Ray Toro and Mike Way❤
Again, thank you for this, it totally made my day💞
Ik MCR is truly a life saving grace of a band
I met Frank years ago at a Warped Tour and he was such a cool dude.
One of my hero’s!!! This dudes music has helped me so much since 2003/2004 when I first heard them
Frank Iero: Underrated human.
I've been waiting for this for so long, happy it is finally out.
Wut?! This video was 20 min? It felt like 3 minutes or something シ
Listening to him playing Helena hurts my heart like nothing else man. I've been binge watching recent videos of him playing MCR songs on guitar (it really starts to seem like he is MCR unofficial PR guy lmao) and they are all so good and makes me appreciate their talents even more. All I want is a new performance of them all together in one room.
Thanks for the video!
I STOPPED BREATHING AHHHHHHHHHHHHH
“Be a little bit ugly” finding beauty in imperfection. ❤️
Thank you for this interview!! Frank's music helped me through a lot and now seeing him happy with his family and his guitars really made my day
so cool! pls make one with ray toro too!! ♡
That was an absolute joy to watch, all the way through! How I've missed listening to Frank tell stories. Its almost a year now since I last saw him on the UK tour. Feels like a lifetime ago
I’ve watched this like 5 times already😂 I could watch him talk for hours
So I have a weird history with My Chem. When I was an early teen, I thought that they were a band that posers in the scene for harder music listened to (admittedly, my favorite two bands at the time were like Slipknot and Metallica so all insults to teenage me welcome). Then I got older and very much started to appreciate what they were doing, irregardless of how I perceived their listeners (the people I knew who were their fans really stopped listening to them after freshman year of hs). After watching this video, I can really appreciate what this man put into his music.
Do a Ray toro interview pls?!
They won’t do him since he’s not endorsed by Ernie ball
MCR and frank especially have been so important and inspirational to me, there isn't a logical reason for me to cry over some of the stuff in this interview, but I am
I think I'm gonna cry, this is amazing
all this time I always thought the one plays the first note of "The End." in "The Black Parade is Dead" is Ray, turns out it's Frank playing the guitar his dad bought for him. sweet.

I used Ernie Balls one time. Didn‘t thought about it first and went on with my standard Brand. I‘m recording some songs and i just realized, that my Standard Brand Strings already sounded kinda dead after a few days. I think i‘m gonna get back to the Ernie Balls... they really had life (even after a longer time)
I was needing to hear the last words Frank said, thank u I really need that at this time. Heroo
7:54 Fernandes strat covered in stickers, eh? I wonder if Billie Joe Armstrong had anything to do with that.
most definitely
what a beautiful interview
This was everything that I needed and more! I always am amazed when I hear just Frank's parts because it really does bring this depth and grungyness to what ray plays, ray brings the beef and the main bits of the song that I thrive on and Frank adds all the thrashes and twirls and angry that I desire! Together it is music to my ears!
Oh god, I was so depressed and then you came out with this beautiful Frank, you made me cry, laught and cry again. THANK YOU
this video could not have come at a better time. absolutely made my day!
Okay, this was amazing and makes me feel strangely emotional.
I remember standing next to Frank while we were watching Sorority Noise at a festival we both played. We began chatting while he smoked his cigarette. Dudes a really cool, genuine and down to earth guy.
i love how everyone else pronounces it as my CHEM while frank just says MY chem lol
Nobody says that.
