    Great video! Thanks. At the five minute point, you show the joists overhanging the center beam. In my house, the ends of the joists are angling upward into the floor, because the joists are sagging a bit. can I just cut off those ends?

    So I have this problem but the new problem I have is the joists on each side have taken on the load of the bathroom closet behind the drain side of the tub. Each joist on either side of the cut board both had knots in the bottom of the boards (pretty much in line) and they now have 3’ cracks in a V shape. It has caused a deep sag and the floor tiles in closet have all cracked. My plan is to use a 2x10x4 girder perpendicularly under the cracked knots, and 3 jack posts to lift it all over the next several weeks. Plus a bottle jack in the other side of the cut joist. The goal is to level it all back out and attempt one of these repairs (sister to cut or 2 boards 16” on center) and then leave the girder for support. Would it be better to go 2 new boards 16 on center on either side of cut or use 4 beside every damaged joist? I’d leave the support girder also.

      As long as the joist are spaced about 16 inches on center, whether next to or spaced away and you're installing a new beam under the damaged area, I think you're on the right track. I would love to see a picture of your repair when done.

    Would a small cut or crack effect it at the ends?

    What do I do if my house has 8x8 rim joist that are notched for the floor joists. I can't set new joists on the foundation, unless I cut another notch.
    Could I use joist hangers instead?

    Nice video! How would you go about fitting the whole run of the sister joist into position over the girder and mud sill? Is it possible to do so from the crawl space?

      I don't know exactly what you're doing but you should check out some of our other videos on crawlspace repairs. www.homebuildingandrepairs.com/repairs/crawl_space/index.html Email me a picture of your problem if you can't find what you need.

    I have a similar situation but the joist was not cut. The floor is sagging between the joists where the plumbing was put in during a remodel. However, the joists were not cut, luckily. Cannot insert blocking. Can I sister the joists to the beam in the middle of my home as you did here, one on the two consecutive joists?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  Год назад

      I can't tell you for sure to do it, because each house is built different.

    How do you nail those two joists to the above flooring? Should you glue and nail? Thank you very much.

      For smaller repairs, let's say 15 inches or less square, screws might be fine with glue or other adhesives being used for additional strength. Repairs that require replacing parts of the structural floor framing might require nails.

    The fact that homeowners/builders cannot just move a wall over a bit to prevent cutting a joist is mind boggling. Sure one room might be an inch or two bigger than the other one but at least you will have a structurally sound floor system. The amount of weight that a fully filled soak tube including the weight of a human is staggering. Especially over a cut floor joist.
    If it’s absolutely not possible to prevent cutting a joist then one or two extra joists should be placed on each side of the damaged (yes a cut joist is a damaged joist) joist to help prevent further damage to the local floor system.

    The last repair you show of adding 2 new joists, would you be able to take that middle joist completely out being that the 2 new joists are taking the load?

    • @gregvancom
      @gregvancom  8 лет назад +1

      +Y34soclean Yes you could, but sometimes I leave them in, because pulling them out can be difficult and create problems for the flooring above. For example if you have tile, you could crack it while prying on the board you're trying to remove. If you have carpeting, the floor sheathing nails could work their way up, damaging the padding and carpeting.

    What would you do if a water damage mitigation company cut through 6-8 joists when removing wet ceiling drywall? The cuts are about 1/2 to 3/4 inches. Im so devastated.

      You would need to contact a structural engineer for more information. I personally don't think a three-quarter inch will be that big of a deal, but it depends upon the size of the joist. For example a three-quarter of an inch cut in a 2 x 8 might require some type of structural repair, but it 2 x 14 might not. Feel free to email me some pictures and I'll be glad to take a look at it.

    Any suggestion how to cut that joist as you have shown, without damaging the floor?

      Have you tried using a sawzall? I've used small hand saws before and if you are still looking for ideas, visit your local home improvement center or lumberyard and ask if they have something.

      Wouldn’t common sense say crawl under with a Jack and some blocks and Jack the joist up till it’s level and stack some blocks and use wood to fine tune the gap then rinse and repeat as needed.

    Can't you just sister a long length of the same width 2X lumber with bolts without having to run it all the way to the foundation walls or beam? Whoever plumbed my house back in 1942 put the toilet right on top of a floor joist; then to make a bad situation worse he hacked away a chunk out of the top of it to run what looks like a sheetmetal duct angled to the main drain pipe. The worse part about this is it's the only toilet in my house so I've never figured out how to fix this yet still have a place to go to the bathroom (besides in a bucket) while the repair is being done.

    I fucking hate plumbers, the original builders left a mess of cut joists for me.
