What’s actually “slow”? Are you actually needing to look down to see what gear you’re in? It’s just a cool gadget. What is needed for “practical”? Having said that, if it’s speed up, that’s cool too. 😊

@@yungpharm91 lets be real, here. while i agree that it is a gimmick, the creator took the criticism REALLY well and actually plans on speeding up the animation. also, like he said, its just tweaking a variable value in the code sketch. im just starting to program myself and am starting to realize that criticisms like this are actually really, really useful for inventors and diyers alike lol no hate. just saying he is 100% right about the animation being too slow. if this was used on say,, a digital dashboard for a sim racing rig, it could be distracting and .001 seconds can make a world of difference when racing for money lol

Great Fusion tutorial! I dabbled in Blender as a teenager and now getting into 3D printing I thought about using it, but I'm reconsidering after what I saw. It seems so easy to design such a thought out piece by using flat sketch and then modyfing it by extruding/substracting

Use a hollow tube for the shift shaft and use a round cable that's meant to repeatedly bend, such as some silicone USB cable. Then you can stick the cable through the shift shaft and hide the cable entirely. If you use some serial protocol for the shift knob assembly, you could also integrate buttons for special car functions or such into it.

Maybe I've missed something, but what is the use case for this. having to look down at the gear knob to see what gear you're in kind of defeats the need for the display, because you can see the physical position of the knob to determine what gear you're in. The display in your eyeline when driving would make more sense. Love the design and attention to detail, just not sure how useful this is.

I have imagined a knob with a gyro and a configurable ui by phone to set the gears in position so that does not require another heavy circuitry nor custom pcb. E.G.: You set how much gears it has, set to 1 on the gear and in the phone, repeat X times for the configuration wizard and voila.

      a) You don´t really need that much of knowledge of Arduino, since the sketch is already written and ready to be used
      b) You can simulate all the eletronics part in WOKWI in browser
      c) You don´t need to buy 3D printer, but get it printed by friend / any online service like for example PCBWay (still, the A1 mini is only 250$)
That said, while I don´t plan to produce and sell this product, I might have a small batch for someone like you. If you are willing to share photos of installation into your car, I would be happy to send you at least the 3D printed parts. Is you miata 5 speed or 6 speed transmission?

And then you hit a bump, crest a hill too fast, or make tight turns, and now your microcontroller doesn't know where the stick is at...

@@charetjc Oh you are right, didn't think about that but i think you can do some code adjustment to work it out

I was thinking about the same and I might try that, but as someone already noted, I´m worried that when the car is moving, it might confuse the readings.

@@upir_upir you can use two accelerometers one in the shift knob an one just bolted to the car and subtract the reding this should remove the error

would not want anyone on the road looking down at their shifter knob and entering some visual feedback loop with a screen to figure out what gear they're in... with animations and transitions to make it even harder to see at a glance?! look at the road please. we already have screens that show what gear you're in, located on the dash where you can easily see without taking your eyes too far from the road. this is a weird project.

You might be surprised, but the majority of cars do not have a gear indicator on the dash..

Agreed. Thankfully that´s just tweaking one variable in the code to make it work faster.
