It’s calling me back
House of Sugar
Did they bury me here?
Daddy don’t let em put me down
Daddy don’t let em turn me around
I don’t wanna go back
Nobody’s gonna push me off track
I see what they do
Good people got something to lose
I don’t wanna go back
Nobody’s gonna push me off track
I don’t wanna be this
Good people gotta fight to exist
I can see it right there right in front of me
pretty tight of alex g to drop a track that makes me feel like life is worth living

Here's to sharing the feeling!
Damn. I grew up in Nowhere, Midwest USA and this video makes me want to cry. Everyone’s fighting their own battle. Beautiful song and video.
Rural areas in the Midwest get a lot of flack but I wouldn't trade where I grew up for anything.
Left Hand dude I’m in SC but I got the same vibe
my thought exactly right before i saw this comment. i teared up looking at their faces and made a note to myself to be nice to everyone
me in texas :/
This is how I feel about Illinois
alex g is working class surrealist music. i love it.
Perfect way to describe it
working class surrealist music? can you explain a little deeper?
Great description
ooh this is It™️
@@nightskykitty i agree with his description, it's kind of like a mix of genres that are deeply rooted in working class struggles like country and blues, but adding a pop twist with cryptic/surrealist lyrics and unconventional harmonies. It adds commercial and experimental aspects to the sound in genres that are normally very grounded! At least that's how I see it
There's just something about his music...it's hard to explain
I personally think hes able to perfectly encapsulate a certain nostalgic feeling people 17-mid20s feel about being younger
such a nostalgic tint to his work.. although he referencing separate memories strange but cool
Dirk Molek I’m 31 and I’m feelin it too
It's mostly confusion for me.
I feel like his music gets me
for me this video shows how tragically sad is the american society to the good and humble people of this country. it's the contrast of alex playing in the grass, free, and then the cars trashing. like, one destroying each other and at the same time people are trying to be happy and proud of their lives. in the end it's alex again in the car going to the nature, he doesn't wanna go back. i really identify this song as overcoming a depressive life. it's hard for us to keep sane in this society, he overcomes the deppression and "don't wanna go back", "good people gotta fight to exist". the deppressive people are good, sensitive people who many times identify the problems of this world, but we can "fight" and overcome this, and we don't wanna go back. life gets good, don't give up.
pushed me near to tears, thanks gabe.
Amazing analysis dude I really didn't notice that. Thank you!
great way to interpret this video :)
shut up lol
"Im going to be an hour and a half late to work" ass music.
if this isn't the most truthful statement i've ever read..

@@ermweezer weirdly, this is exactly what i thought when i first heard this.
there was a time on the bus when i was listening to this song and i felt my essence leave my body. it was so surreal, no song, no piece of music, no experience has made me feel the way "Gretel" does. and i dont think anything ever will.
Lots of his music speaks to me. His music feels like my inner aesthetic or essence ❤ and I love it
I've listened to this at least ten times today.
same
@@jacob56955 you gotta ration yourselves til the album drop
me too the day it dropped
One of the realest people doing music in today’s indie scene. Not following any trends but his own. Thank u Alex.
a true pioneer
too bad the music is bland and boring
CometCourse nah
For sure and thank you fornthat comment, wise words
CometCourse how
you can tell alex g was studying to be an english teacher cause the juxtaposition, foreshadowing, and symbolism goes hard in this
Dear God the nostalgia that Sandy can trigger, not sure how he does it, the way he constructs songs makes me feel
Can't. Stop. Replaying.
I am unable to assign words to this song. I've never felt this way before. Everything is just so perfect to me. from the tonal pieces to the rhythm....this song possesses me. And I literally heard this song for the first time through a live set yesterday and I was like....what is that song...and today....man....2nd listen ever and it's maybe one of my favorite songs EVER. It's a masterpiece.
Lucky you lol, wish I could hear it again for the first time.
Check out the rest of this album... my personal favorites, besides Gretel, are Taking, In My Arms, and Walk Away
@J. B. this comment feels like it was written a million years ago. I've purchased now 5 vinyls. I love all those songs.
I literally can't believe only 8 months has passed since this comment. I feel like I've known him my whole life now.
gives me chills
Alex G的歌曲真的有一种魔力,阐述的这种美国感情是非美国人也能感受的

been an alex g fan for 7 years. he’s grown so much since then. love u alex, ur music has made a great impact on my life 🫶
@elijahfinch3349 i’ll try it out! thanks for the recommendation:)
@elijahfinch3349I would also recommend Drive by Dead Sullivan, it also has a really cool Alex G vibe to it :)
i always come back and just read the comments on his music.. his music makes me sad in the happiest way.
Why have I seen a lot of his fans do that like me? Interesting lol
I have found my people. Never stop making music Alex. I listen to this everywhere, switching classes, being yelled at, taking walks, sleeping, all that. You’re the only thing that gets me through hard days man. Your music has got me through some shit.
Same. Hope all is going well for you ^^
Hello. Are you doing alright? Ima bit worried after seeing this has helped you through stuff. I'm glad it has been able to help you but are you okay?
@That_GoofyGoober yes, I’ve been clean from self harm for 5 months, I think. Alex really helps ground me.
@@DemiboyBasil-wr1tj Thats amazing to hear, I'm glad you have been clean for 5 months
@That_GoofyGoober hoping for many more to come. It means a lot knowing people care. There are good things In life, and I want to see it all. I have things to accomplish, and you do too. Just a reminder that you belong here, and being kind, you will be repaid.
i feel like this music represents being numb. You can listen when happy, angry, sad, excited, any emotion works with it. i love it.
I've been dreaming of a new album for so long, and the single is amazing. I love you Alex.
blush cannon I firmly believe Alex has enough material to release an album every 5 months, but the Domino is damming the river so to speak.
@@rockonhard77 I think he's become more picky over the years. I've read a recent interview where he said he's satisfied with Domino cause they give him total artistic freedom.
Listening to this a day after my dad died. Really hits home.
i’m so sorry i hope you’re doing okay i hope you know you’re loved
in rehab i listened to this song every day. there was a whiteboard in the kitchen and i’d scrawl the lyrics on it after i shut the kitchen down each night
Not even gonna lie, this is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.
For me, this song is about being enticed into a job where you were sold the world in the interview, the job isn’t great, you’re taken advantage of and you leave. You’re never going back because you move onto bigger and better things upon leaving.
anyone else tear up? felt this song SO hard, i can't wait for the album (and tour, hopefully!)
Hell yes, well not tear up but damn it hit me hard. I played it several times just to make sure I loved it. I'm on about my 30 listens now.
I just have to ask...do you run to feel the burning in your lungs?
Still feel it
i love this song i can't stop coming back
The music video is making me so happy and so sad at the same time
That drop riff is pretty bad ass, sounds like something Deftones or Kid A Radiohead would come up with 🤘🤘
you a real one for this
You must have read that Pitchfork review of this album.
That’s what I was thinking, it’s very radio head like
Omg i just thought of that
not at all
one of the many songs to help save me, thank you forever
I've never loved a music video this much like the song slapped and then I found the video and now I think about it 24/7
I want to grow old with them and their songs
@nameface6934another one is the album Blanket by Kevin Abstract
I've loved alex g for many years but I really fell in love with his music during a trip to India during the summer of 2019. I had every single one of his albums on repeat. In the back of the car, while watching the sunset every evening, while waking up for morning tea...I was and am obsessed. Please keep releasing great music!!!
Alex G songs are like magic.
This song is magic
the coloring on this video keeps bringing me back here. the grass and the fields are just so surreal and fitting

*Good people gotta fight to exist* That line hit me hard.
I don't know why it's taken me this long to fully listen to Gretel, something kept telling me to put it off even though I absolutely love House of Sugar. It came up in my reccomended again and I finally decided to see what the fuss was about and I'm so glad I listened. I needed this and I wish I listened sooner.
words cant describe how much i love this video
this is incredible. such beautiful images to go along with the music and lyrics. Alex G is a pioneer.
GOOD PEOPLE GOTTA FIGHT TO EXIST UHH HUHHHH
This is one of the best music videos I ever seen
Sobbing and crying cu'z the guy i liked who i thought was a ghetto and a hardcore rapper actually recommended me this song....he rejected me but this song really helped me to move on....i just realized that its not the end of the world just because he's not talking to me now...
i like that he feels like someone i could know
the first 13 seconds of this song kept playing on repeat when I was really stoned. It sounded so real and was so relaxing
Crazy how popular our boy is getting. Saw him at a brewery in 2019, and I feel like it’s the last time I’ll see him at a place that small. Good for him.
Hands down my favorite Alex G video! Genuine and sincere, zero gimicks, no intentional indie aesthetic, just him enjoying life being a kid. And monster trucks!!!
i can't stop humming this song
Same
Still probably my fav somg from him. Leagues ahead from anything on trick
Alex is about to blow up if he releases another album this stunning next. He keeps refining his sound and building upon the foundation set on his previous albums, and they're all good to excellent. This video is awesome and beautiful, too. Like a rural David Lynch thing.
I mean he’s super popular already
Agreed.
I'd say your suspicions were correct. :-)
The imagery in this video is stunning, like the video looks exactly like how the song sounds
Likely watched this video over 100 times since it came out. From a one-stoplight town in Indiana and this is totally the vibes there. Good people got something to lose.
Those opening shots as the bass comes in of the forest and field are so lush I can taste them.
Really love that there is so much love being shown to the most weirdo outcast americans hated on day in and day out by most people. Anyone whos been out in middle america knows its on some weird shit but at the same time it's beautiful how small those towns get.
Reminds me of when I was growing up in the 2000s -2010s oddly when I listen to this song it brings me back
easily the best song of last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Makes me feel so many emotions
This video cured my crippling depression, for at least this night
his best song
honestly real
Sandy's Southern Livin
How does he consistently do this time after time
A true genius
This actually is one of my favorite indie songs in the last 5 years or so
It feels like the world around me ceases to exist while I’m listening to this song.
This video is so beautifully shot. I can’t explain it but the essence of youth, and the scenery are all so beautiful.
This song and this song alone has been stuck in my head, and I’ve never been happier about a song getting stuck.
fr should have a billion views tbh
one of the best music videos ever
i've listened to this for at least an hour today. so good -- that fucking chorus. i haven't been this excited for an album in years. the ending of this video is so sweet and... ominous? love it
I havent been this excited for an album since the last alex g album...and the one before the last alex g album, and the Alex g album 2 before the last. And so on. Lol
His music is rlly unlike any artist I’ve ever heard. Perfect embodiment of the grittiness of American culture.
ily forever
I've listened to this every day since I heard it... there is just something about this one that speaks to me.
This song gives me such a sense of nostalgia and I can't put my finger on why. This isn't the only song by Alex G that does this too, Sarah very much reminded me of my childhood and I don't know why. I grew up in Arizona so these shouldn't have any relation but the sounds just bring me back, and the cover of Trick reminds me of my childhood too. (I think the reason for that is because I went to church more as a kid and used to have a malawah dog) but still the sense of nostalgia from his songs are surreal. The only other person to give me a sense of nostalgia this much is Beck, but that's because I grew up with an entire family that loved Beck's music.
it's callin me back..
it makes me feel nostalgic too, when i was little i went to alot of music festivals with my family and i heard alot of music like alex g's at them
one of my favs
This guy is so good. The video for this is awesome, not over the top or super contrived but just cool, reflective, enjoyable visuals that suit the song and are a bit different. His music is really fantastic. Sometimes with the sort of "death" of indie music, rock music etc you forget that it's not because the genre is dead or because it's incapable of being meaningful anymore but really just because there aren't that many people doing anything good anymore. But over the last few years that's really changed and I think he's one of the main reasons. It's very exciting because hip-hop has been entering new frontiers and now indie songwriting seems to be making a comeback. The last decade hasn't been all that great compared to ones that preceded it but I think the 2020s are shaping up to be amazing. With all the fuss and stress of the internet and politics and modern life there's never been a better time for good, relatable, enjoyable, immersive art with meaning and sincerity. Thanks Alex.
I totally agree. The Internet has been great for breaking down the barriers between genres, but I think that to some extent it also turned music into content, to be consumed en masse without much thought. Alex is definitely doing the old style of indie where it's more about individual expression and chasing your muse than trying to slide into an algorithmically generated playlist.
"I think the 2020s are shaping up to be amazing"
:(
@@jacob421 Lol. Next year's gonna be sick.

This song, video and all, truly is like a religious experience. I've been travelling the US back n forth north to South for the past 5 years, transient, lending my hand and heart to farms, new found friends and family. This piece speaks volumes to the strive towards love and life we all experience no matter your creed. Transcends what America is made out to be and speaks to what America really is. All nations for that matter - one love.
feels like home. anyone from the midwest knows
I truly think this is the greatest song of all time. The whole song is just so gorgeous. Alex truly is a genius
i am in love with these songs
i keep seeing alex in dreams.. i really want to meet him this year !
alex g is one of the most connected artists I’ve ever heard.
Making me a whole summer for this album is a crime
Love this single
Alex's newer music was an entry way into his older ones. I found myself being able to easily consume this and after i got the essence of alex, was able to digest his earlier work, which quite honestly was much rougher. I know some fans, key word some, might not like his album but after listening to his discography from top down, dude, house of sugar is easily my favourite alex g record. Its addictive in a way others couldn't be, or were held back. Trick is my next go to, but what this has that trick doesn't is just pure sugar feels. I have listened to this album more than any other album ever, particularly hope and gretel. This is like pure alex g, in all its studio form. Beware: you'll get hooked.
He makes it feel good to be in the world. I love it, but I get anxious because I want to protect it in glass.
my most favorite music video of all time. love you Alex G
U help me thru a lot Alex, thx man
His music really brings a special warmth to all of his fans.

This whole album is his best vocal work to date. I want to hear more of his voice at full potential. THE best album.
Gosh this is too beautiful. Stay brite Alex!
This song takes me right back to the summer before the pandemic. Sitting in my backyard, 4th of July 2019. Felt like such an easy sound. Times were so much better.
