Back in 2010 Robb Flynn’s Martinez, CA house was burglarized. Stolen with the cash, jewelry, and other items were four guitars, and amongst these four was easily one of his most meaningful possession, a 1997 Washburn Dimebolt guitar that was given to him onstage at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, by the late-great Pantera guitarist, Dimebag Darrell.
Last night, some six years later, it was returned to him along with an un-released Epiphone prototype.
How?
When Holly Cherry put a $10 dollar online bid to buy an unclaimed storage unit in San Bernardino, she had no idea what she would find. Tucked away in said storage unit she discovered that it had two electric guitars. So like anyone she went about getting a valuation on them, luckily the un-released Epiphone Signature Series prototype had Robb Flynn’s autograph on the back. Using the Google Translate App to take a photo of the name it eventually pulled up various stories on the theft.
Emailing some photos over to Bryan Kehoe at Jim Dunlop Strings and Pedals (long-time sponsors of Machine Head). Bryan then forwarded the pics to Robb’s high school buddy Craig Locicero who Robb performed with in the band Forbidden before Machine Head who contacted Robb.
Opening the email, Flynn was stunned to find photos of two of the four guitars, including the beloved Dimebolt. Flynn explained, “I’ve had so many false leads over the last 6 years I can’t even tell you, literally hundreds, and while was grateful for everyone’s enthusiasm in helping find them, but I had kind of given up hope.” Adds Flynn, "you can imagine my shock when that email came through and it was really them! I was sitting in our son Wyatt’s gymnastics class waiting for it to start and I blurted out 'HOLY S**T, they found my guitars!' My kids laughed and said 'what what?’”
Contacting Holly, she agreed to meet Robb in Oakland where the guitars were returned, miraculously, in near perfect condition considering they were stolen without a case, and only missing one volume knob.
In closing Flynn added, “I’d like to thank Holly Cherry for being so amazing throughout this entire process, she truly is an outstanding human being. I’d also like to thank Officer Ian Leong of the Martinez Police Dept. who has stayed on the case for over 6 years, and has been unrelenting in hunting down the thieves. Lastly huge, huge, HUGE props go out to Craig Locicero and Bryan Kehoe for contacting me with this info, and also to Chris Wallace and Wes Anderson for connecting the dots. The Ibanez guitar that I used to write and record Machine Head’s debut ‘Burn My Eyes’ is still out there missing, so I’m asking all the Head Cases to keep their eyes peeled. But for now, the Dimebolt is home and it’s moments like these that make you believe man, they make you believe!”

That's the thing, she investigated the name on the Epiphone. Another person could just see the name and didn't care about it, or even worse, recognize the name and try to sell it.
There was also a pretty hefty reward for finding them. I want to say it was like $3000? While I'm happy for Robb, I doubt her motives were completely altruistic.
It's a win win situation really as a musician myself I'd just want tickets to the show and show support to Robb by buying Machine Merch out the ass but as a person who may not be into that his thanks and if he insisted on giving said reward I'd take it. If it were me who had my precious item such as this stolen and not knowing 100% if I'd EVER see it again especially somebody who looked up Dimebag Darrell and seen that guitar and decided to hold it hostage for the highest bidder if they said "Hey dude I have your guitar", I'd be in eternal debt to them

If it was a storage locker, does the company not have records of the previous customer that was renting it? Surely through that, they can trace who was in possession of the guitars before and follow the trail back to the other 2 guitars? Jesus, the feeling Rob must have had to get that back.

I owned one of the first 100 Washburn USA Dime Blackjacks ever made...got stolen from me in Columbus, Ohio. Wound up on Reverb.com and they REFUSED to help me get it back. I had a police report and everything. It's #62. Dime gave it to Bill Foley at the German Village Music Haus here in Columbus and it became my 18th Birthday present back in '98.
I look every couple of months online for it and found it once...but Reverb really let me down. I contacted the seller, proved it was mine and he deleted the listing like a coward! Hopefully, that guitar makes it way back to me. It meant the world to me!

I lost my black 1987-88 Ibanez SdGR 1000 to a storage unit auction (fell on hard times). It's a japan manufactured sort of prototype phase to the model released in 1990. It was black, with gold hardware and the guts wired to be passive (long story). There was a pot leaf decal in the center of the knobs and selector switch. Figured I would throw this out to as many places as possible ... maybe some day it will turn up. That bass saw a lot of action in the Brooklyn Hardcore scene and opened for every known band from that era.

Ironically...I got to hang out with Robb years ago after a machine head show....at get this.....the fucking Alrosa Villa. I shit thee nay. I live about 30 mins from Columbus OH, (Cbus to the locals) and have seen a shitload of bands there. Machine Head twice there actually...shit man...I was actually at Alrosa's very first outdoor show ever which was Coal Chamber, Slipknot and Machine Head and fucking Mushroomhead showed up (they're from Cleveland area) with a huge bedsheet that said "Mushroomhead rules the Alrosa. Slipknot go home!" and started throwing rocks at them while they were playing. They were eventually thrown out after Mick Thompson ripped his mask off and straddled the stage/barricade and started screaming at them and threatening to beat their asses lol....fucking great show. I wonder if Robb remembers the altercation and if he does, I wonder if he remembered it happened at the Alrosa. that shit was like 20 years ago

@Gareth The confederate flag represented a group of people that thought it was justifiable to subjugate and enslave people over the color of their skin. Theres no other way to put it. Sure Dime had a guitar with the flag on it but he tragically died so theres no way to know his thoughts on it. Who knows he might have ended up regretting representing something like that. But we all can agree Dime was a legendary guitarist who was taken way too soon.

Same thing happened to C.C. deville from poison, all his guitars from cat dragged in to flesh & blood, some asshole stole those double crossboned skull guitar, the Judas Priest cover work on his one guitar, say what you want about C.C. But the man had some of the most bad ass guitars I’ve seen
John Campbell's ESP bass was recovered but Willie's Warbird is still missing after both guitars were stolen from Ak Chin Pavilion. That was back in 2019. The perps who did it got busted.
