Developed in the mid-1970s, punk rock is a genre of music rooted in garage rock that also rejected the mainstream 1970s rock sound. WatchMojo picks the ten greatest Punk bands of all time.
List Entries and Rank:
#10. Misfits
#9. Social Distortion
#8. Bad Religion
#7. Bad Brains
#6. Dead Kennedys
#5. Black Flag
#4. Iggy and the Stooges
#3. ?? Видеоклипы
Where the FUCK are the Misfits, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, the Clash, the Sex Pistols, and the Ramones?!?
You literally named off (and in order) the list for the redux version of this video.
did you even watch the video?
+Coda 20097 cool
Those are pop punk you named, to the exeption of a few.
This are the Pioniers of Punk. And The Ramones the Gods of all them.
WatchMojo...
They're like a person, who doesn't know shit, but still wants to talk about things it doesn't know
They are middle school "Emo" kids, obviously
@shadrock99 and I've seen the murder junkies live if you don't know who they are your just a poser wannabe
Well said. That list was literal bags of shit.
Josh Weaver oh yes the fuck it is punk is all about giving the finger to society
Yeah like this is a terrible top 10 punk bands LIKE WHERE TF IS NOFX HELLOOOO and sooooo much more like wtf just delete the video the need to re do this shiz
Growing up during the "punk" scene, this list is way off.
Instead of “influential” I would call these the most popular and commonly referenced punk bands.
Making them influnetial
Right
Which kinda makes them influential
@@allhandsondik7803 i mean you dont see many people talking about richard hell and the voidoids and they were hugely influential
yea thats more accurate. Household names over influential
Watchmojo is one of least punk things ever.
Couldn't agree more
JP Huffinstuff WatchMojo is just corporate greed, rich old men suits realising they can make money out of RUclips
I agree
Btw I love the clash,the misfits,nirvana,green day,sex pistols,G.B.H,ska,back flag,the ramones,the Beatles, and many more I am 11 love all of these bands
It's a RUclips video dude, relax. How can you even take a fucking video SO seriously? lmfao
They said "Minor Threat" more than any other band name and yet they didn't make the list... The fuck?
Top kek!
Monarch agreed this is retarded
agreed
I asked the same exact ? 6 months before you did...and u got 45 likes to my 0... The fuck? such is the luck of a harD.C.ore Punk ;)
well when you are not even the most important band to come out of your own local scene it's hard to make this kind of list.
I like how youve mentioned Minor Threat being influences for like 3 of these bands yet they arnt even on here. I as many others in the comments dimiss the Misfits being at number 10. top 5 easily.
I left when dead Kennedys was placed at six,
A soulless, capitalist youtube channel makes a video about it's favorite punk bands.
What a time to be alive.
***** Yeah because that's what I said.
+realevilcorgi huy si..me cago en el medio capitalista..pero me busco las 10 bandas..q anarco
+Ingrate Alot of European group was as red as Lenins political views, either extreme left or anarchy. And what the Americans view as punk, I would rather class as Punk-rock, not punk. Big difference. This list feels the same like you would throw Marilyn Manson and Sabaton under the same category just because they are both "metal".
+realevilcorgi That's what you implied, yeah.
+Ingrate Maybe if you knew some bands like Crass, DIRT, Discharge, Sore Throat, Zounds, etc you would realize that not all punk is ramones and sex pistols (iggy isn't punk...)
Dead Kennedys should have been in the top 5
Definitely
Agreed.
they should be number 1
+jack e Well, they should be number 3. The Clash is number 2 and the Sex Pistols is the best. Ramones should 4th
+GranTruismo4head number one man... they were just great
Dead kennedys 6° ????? It's crazy
I am Indonesian, my top 3 favorite.
1.Ramones
2.Rancid
3.Sex Pistols
You sir, have great taste :)
Rancid, one of the best
The Dead Kennedy's court case was over a poster not an album cover
Yep the poster was called penis land slide out of the album Franken christ
I thought it was over the album ludachrist question mark where Jesus has his own head up his ass
Jae Crowther Penis Landscape by the artist H.R. Giger
The Buzzcocks???
The Damned???
Maybe I'm just too old. I remember life before MTV.
Thank you, exactly. Crass, Husker Du, The Minutemen also.
belajadevotchka2 +++++1,00,000 The Damned, Buzzcocks, THE DEAD BOYS, Richard Hell and Voidoids, The NY Dolls....the list definitely lacked.
blah who cares?
I was expecting the NY dolls as well !
GBH
I saw this video on June 9th, 2018. I wanted to learn more about rock and roll and Black Flag caught my eye. A year later upon graduating high school I would hear Damaged in its entirety in June 2019. Its raw power blew you apart with an intensity I hadn't heard before, not even in metal. The album was punctuated with witty lyrics of satire as well as deep emotional ones of the human condition. Henry snarled like a caged animal. I was hooked and got My War in its entirety sometime later as well as the work of the first three singers. By late July, I had heard and loved Slip It In and by the end of the year I had heard the entire catalog. I don't know what changed that summer, it just made sense
I love how damaged has the 2 sides of punk, it has the us vs everything songs
like rise above and the desendants like fun songs with TV party
Black Flag helped me get through high school
Stiff little fingers? Massively underrated
OK, If it was WatchMojo UK the list would be so different.
@Cero Z okay wow, you just owned that dude 😂
Cero Z You know tons of artists that are popular in America were made in the uk, yeah? Does Pink Floyd ring a bell?
@Cero Z Oh look,, the brain cell was let out on holiday.
Cero Z punk rock was created in Detroit with acts like the stooges, death and the dogs.
@Cero Z Punk was created in the UK
I left when the misfits was placed at 10
@Christina Azarian I'm a pretty big misfits fan ,Danzig being my favorite vocalist ofc with albums like they walk among us and static age, but I think even with graves misfits should have been at least in the top 6 imo American psycho and famous monsters are some of the best albums in the misfits discography.
I dont care how influential the sex pistols are, they're shit. Honestly, hot garbage.
@@3sjstill438 Danzig has more credibility than that whole fucking band put together.
They fucked up bad but the ramones has to be number 1
@@dillonbija9592 same with me and RAMONES, but I actually like Pistols....
Absolutely brilliant everyone mentioned deserves to be on this list
One day watchmojo will upload a video and it says: "Why Nickelback is the best metal band ever"
Where’s the Germs or Minor Threat on this list?! Not even an honorable mention for these guys wtf!!
Exactly
Ian McKaye should get his own entry. The dude literally fronted so many bands and ones more influential than the other.
@@tedesco7219 STRAIGHT EDGE!
At least they mentioned minor threat a couple times :/
Thank you
i respectfully disagree about the misfits placement they should be in at least the top 5
100%. But Danzig era. They lumped the Jerryfits and graves era in and called it #10.
BrainEatPenguin well compared to the jerryfits I can’t argue. Graves wasn’t bad for what It was. They put out better music than the jerryfits, but totally different than the Danzig misfits. All they had the do was change the name and do their own thing and not cash in on the misfits name, or rather the fiend skull logo.
BrainEatPenguin not hating on graves. Just not my misfits
I guess you could say they misfit their placement👉👉
Facts
The Clash, The Ramones, and The Sex Pistols are my all time favourite 3 bands of punk. They're the true warriors of the punk era!!!!
My personal favorite punk bands
Ramones
Sex Pistols
The Misfits
Bad Religion
Dead Milkmen
Frankenstein Dragqueens from Planet 13
I love the dead milkmen
Green day: am I a joke to u?
@@ahnaftahmid872 I'm not a big fan of Green Day
Let me guess your number punk genre, Horror/hardcore?
The Clash is my fav Punk Band, my fav song by them isnt Punk tho, its Train in Vain but if im pickin a Punk song then its gotta be, Complete Control
Why in the fuck is social distortion above The Misfits
Man I love them both!
+Epicness01sgr It's "most influential", not best. PTS
+texshelters Every thrash band from the early '80s through the mid '90s were in some way influenced by the Misfits.
I know it's bullshit

No Circle Jerks?!?!?
That’s just what I was thinking . . .
Damn it.
Agree top 10
Yeah, where the fuck are the circle jerks
No Cro-mags
You missed a load stranglers /the damned / uk subs /x ray specs /Tom Robinson trb / Elvis Costello / and public image.
Elvis Costello is not punk. Post-punk maybe, but that doesn't really apply to this list
Ok if you say so but you are right. Costello don’apply to that list.
What Death? They were doing proto-punk years before just about anyone else.
The most unpunk video I’ve ever seen
Yes
it was so unpunk, I forgot this was a video about punk
What about Sex Pistols,The Clash,Dead Kennedys and Ramones? XD
Misfits are #10 on this list and definitely should be a tip top 5 and Where is GWAR on the list damnit
It's honestly better than I expected it to be
I expected to see Green Day and shit like that and only super poppy mainstream bands to be on here. But they did manage to get DK, Bad Religion, Black Flag and Bad Brains
British Punk: Actual verses more Anarchistic political thoughts
East Coast/L.A. Punk: Not many verses, phrases used a lot
West Coast punk minus L.A.: British punk but American
That is 100% accurate
Bro LA is west coast😂
He’s saying LA does not follow the rest of the West Coast sound, it’s it’s own scene.
As a punk, I'm fuckin dying
Crass should be on this list
I say Killing Joke should have had an honorable mention (from their early days before they switched to Industrial Metal).
Killing joke as post punk and new Wave.
No matter what you think of watchmojo, this is the video that introduced 13 year old me into punk at all. I thank them for that
How are the misfits at number ten, and bands like minor threat and nofx not on here.
they are prob number 10 cuz a lot of their stuff can be considered industrial metal
I love NOFX!!!
imo the top 3 should have been 1sex pistols 2the mifits (the old ones) 3 the ramones
o
Ethan Bowers l
now HOW the FUCK is the Misfits number ten?
I KNOW, IM GONNA KILL A BABY TODAY
They had lots of musical talent, but dominant emotions in punk is anger, and Misfits are some safe escapist entertainment. Like heavy metal.
I know right?!
^
No clue.
Honorable mention: Death, the protopunk band from Detroit. Their 1976 album showcased a fusion of punk and some progressive rock.
You’re absolutely correct!
Booooooooooo they aren’t that good and didn’t influence anyone, give it up. Chuck
Is Death
I loved the documentary about them
Not to mention the various Action Sports Games that had Punk as part of their
Soundtracks - THPS Series/Mat Hoffman BMX 2/Dave Mirra BMX/ Aggressive

DAMNED?????????
I'm so glad Green Day IS NOT on this list!!!!!!!!!!!
yes thank you. even though they put them on top 10 punk albums. they just gotten to where you wouldn't notice them as the same band from 1990.
There pop punk so of course they wouldn't but they are some what good
natashashle sex.pistols x
Fuck you
***** And we're all simply dying to read your comments.
I love how when they bring up black flag, one of the heaviest punk bands they play TV party.
I'm partial to Death Sentence, Forgotten Rebels & The Anti-Nowhere League. I like pretty much all band's mentioned in the video.
misfits should be above 10 they are so influential they not only inspired punk bands but also metal bands
J Spellman METALLICA!
oh yeah they covered misfits on garage inc
I agree with you and want to say one thing...
FUCK YES, SLAYER!!!
P.S I think Danzig has one of the best voices in punk and metal history!
The Chew
i actually saw him at knotfest 2014 in san bernidino
also the misfits was in one of my favorite movies big money hustlas its like one of the gwar movies but made by icp and other cool juggalo artists
J Spellman misfits are good but they are sold out
THE CLASH!!!
Nausea, Misfits, Black Flag, Ramones and Sex Pistols are my favourite punk bands
Green Day should have been somewhere in this list
Stfu men greenday is not punk they are posters
Bad religion did it first
"punk" fans be like: "wheres Blink 182, Good Charlotte and Green Day."
+Brody King LMFAO!
***** thats the joke
I hate when people say blink 182 is pure punk...I wanna sock them in the face and show them what true punk is.
+Brody King Remove Green Day and add Sum 41........
lol all the poser punks
I think that the misfits should be higher on the list
YES, DEFINATLY
I think the misfits are as punk as guns n roses lmfao
RHCP Fan they shouldn’t be on the damn list. They’re all show! They’re the KISS of punk!
I am a rhcp fan too
they had one punk album before they became pop emo
The Clash only has 1 album that could be considered punk. Way back when they were a garage band. In the early 80's there was a good chance I saw the bands10 through 7 in one night at one venue. Throw in MDC, T.S.O.L., Circle Jerks, Christian Death, the thrash punk scene was awesome in L.A..
Yeah but they have a lot of other punk songs outside that album too. London calling, I fought the law, English civil war and more. You cant just count albums
they're new wave. like billy idol. i'm pretty sure new wave is a punk subgenre but it doesn't sound the same
@@svampen2774 I Fought the Law was a rocked up rock n roll classic. Most of the Clash was rock n roll with reggae influence eventually joining in. Sounded punk because it was rocked up, does not make it punk.
@@felixftw4702 Billy Idol was a product. He jumped out of Generation X and became a rock n roll star.

so fucking true
Indeed
@@lorastevens313 yeah even Metallica has used some of their songs
I wholeheartedly agree.
probably the best list you've had.
The two "youngest" bands are Bad Religion and Social Distortion, who started in the 80s. I guess there haven't been many punk bands formed in the past 25-30 years that would hold up to the old bands.
As a young person, I grew up with Deutschpunk, which is a universe in itself and doesn't get out of the German speaking countries.
One of my all time favorite bands are Stiff Little Fingers from Northern Ireland.
What about Green Day
They're Northern Irish
@@dj-um7el Northern Ireland is part of Great Britain, is it not? Or else I would have said England. I am very aware that they are from Northern Ireland.
@@JohnSmith-kd6ip yeah, but not British, they're a UK band, yes, but not British.
@@dj-um7el Alright, I'll correct it.
All these pop punk kids showing up thinking green day and blink-182 should be on the list. Don't get me wrong, I love both of those bands but the fans have to know their place. There's a difference between pop punk and punk. Also, misfits and dead kennedys should've been higher up on the list
This is top 10 Punk band, not Hardcore Punk bands. Give me a valid reason why classic punk rock sound revivers (Green Day) and Skate Punk pioneers/ Pop punk inventors (Blink 182) can't be here. I agree about the difference between pop punk and punk. But early Green Day were as punk rock as the Ramones ever were
Conor Elmes DK and Misfits are hardcore? Not really, maybe DK was, but old Misifts was just Ramonesque pop-punk with shocking lyrics, and now they are a bunch of screamo try-hards (I apologize if you are a Misfits fan). Western Addiction is my definition of hardcore. Anyways, I didn't even mention them in my comment, I just said pop punk has all the right to be included in this list if the music is good enough. And my ears tell me, it is. Don't go ahead and presume what I didn't say.
Lexi Hunter
Rayman Yes?
Lexi Hunter Oh lol... I uh didn't mean to send that. I think it was about that I like the way you think.
Unpopular opinion: Dead Kennedys are better than any, tied with Ramones, Clash is right below, then Sex Pistols.
Agree. I would've put them as follows:
1. The Ramones/Dead Kennedys
2.The Clash
3. The Sex Pistols
4. Misfits
5. The Stooges
6. Black Flag
7. Bad Religion
8. Rancid
9. Social Distortion
10. Green Day
Israel Painting loll green day really?
YellowStryper yes! I fully agree 100% top 2 DKs And ramones with DKs first
Ramon's are#1 as should be
Hell no bro
The Sex Pistols are the most influential punk band! Nevermind the Bollocks is the greatest punk album ever made and one of the greatest of any genre. That album and that band has influenced more bands than anyone else on this list. I also know the Pistols were the reason most of the bands I listen too, were formed in the first place. Love The Clash and The Ramones but they ain't The Sex Pistols.
Totally agree, Pistols are not my No.1 but they are the most important.
I have been searching for hours, hoping watch mojo would show the Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front or even Ween for anything.
Minor Threat?
maybe it´s in pop punk hahaha
Trenton Guess I KNOW
Whoever compiled this list needs to "Think Again."
They are a hardcore band
gpuppy1234 Why? Because his voice was mildly more loud?
Misfits and Dead Kennedy's are my favorite punk bands.
how old are you 14? go listen to gbh, discharge, nmillions of dead cops, t.s.o.l
Matt Maybe just let me have my own opinion, thanks for the suggestions though.
They’re all my favorite punk band. I love punk
IGGY IS MY FAVORITE
Sex Pistols only made one good record in my opinion.
is that a joke?
Yes XD I'm mocking the morons who actually believe such
.....they only made one record.....that's the joke
zak storey For so few songs, huge impact. Personally, I never get tired of them.
Never really got into the Ramones, but I think this list is probably pretty on.
I have to say, my favorite 3 albumns would have to be: Crass, Penis Envy: Bad Brains, Banned in DC; and either DK's Frankenchrist or The Exploited's, Let's Start a War, Said Maggie One Day. Gang of Four is pretty great too.
zak storey Do you mean `Bollocks` or one of their singles or an album track !
Leave it to watchmojo to play some of the worst songs by some of these bands. Should have played some Bad Brains off their self titled. And Misfits all the way at number 10? Some would argue they had a bigger impact than Black Flag even. And Social D are cool but I’d throw in Descendents, Minor Threat, Agnostic Front, or the Exploited over them.
Santee Cruzer misfits sucked
Santee Cruzer Should have NOT covered something they know nothing about stick to Watchmojo where the assholes go.These are words from a 53 year old gen xer that's from the old school and NO not those asshole sex pistols either.
I agree im a huge social distortion fan but the misfits had a bigger impact on the punk scene

why the fuck is Misfits 10? they should of been top 5
I agree
I feel like they shouldn't've been on the list at all, they're over rated
They should be 1 or at least 2
Misfits are way over rated
they will always be my number1

I watched this starting out with a healthy degree of skepticism. Gotta admit I think the list was alright, yes the misfits shoulda been higher. But really people? Just cause you like minor threat or the germs doesn't mean they should be on here. I mean I love rancid too but if you step back, and think of the bigger picture of punk. the list is actually pretty spot on
I used to live in a white bread, upper middle class tourist town and they had Sunday afternoon concerts at a pavilion downtown. Imagine my surprise when I saw flyers around town saying that the Misfits were playing downtown on Sunday. There was no picture of the band so I asked around town and everyone said "Yes, the Misfits are playing downtown on Sunday afternoon!" Well it turned out this band called "The Misfits" was a group of senior citizens that played ragtime music.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
you got clickbaited by a flyer rip the homie
No mention of The Heartbreakers/Johnny Thunders 😔
Oh fuck yeah brother! Finally someone else who knows who that is! You ever dig on the New York Dolls? That's the band he was in before the Heartbreakers. Rock on man!
The Heartbreakers were dirty rock. You’re correct they should’ve made the list? Love the album LAMF! Anyone hasn’t heard this, don’t know shit about music!
That’s my humble opinion!
Most people don't really know Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers as great as they were. You couldn't really get more punk than them in the late 70s. They're not forgotten, but for a seminal punk band they remain pretty obscure. Johnny was a tragic figure, and maybe people prefer to think of him with the New York Dolls instead.
Kiyo Faye the doll r one of my fav with songs like pills or chatterbox Chinese rock even though its a cover by the Ramones the heartbrakers r great to l.a.m.f to much junkie business what can you say but awesome Lamf is hard to find on cd it’s allways issued on vinyl or tape

I would definitely consider dead kennedys to be top 3. Maybe 1st. Black flag should also definitely be higher.
I will say that I might agree with the Sex Pistols’ placement

At least you know what the fuck you're talking about to put together 8 bands that belong up there. And I'm glad you didn't say the exploited. That band is one-dimensional as fuck.

Ever band is true punk. Amazing bands, Metallica sings the misfits. DK amazing. Social distortion great. Black flag wow one of the best. The artist is amazing. The stooges amazing. The clash yea great. Sex Pistols amazing, unfortunately Sid couldn’t keep it together. The ramones best punk band ever. They go head to head with the pistols.
Here's my Top 10 best punk bands.
10) Dropkick Murphys
9) The Offspring
8) Dead Kennedys
7) The Damned
6) Bad Brains
5) Black Flag
4) Iggy Pop and the Stooges
3) Misfits
2) Sex Pistols
1) The Ramones
Surprised Minor Threat wasn't listed considering they mentioned them at least 2 times.
Bad Brains above everyone else! The talent, energy, and image of that band is unparalleled!
It hurts how underrated they are
They deserve more recognition
I have never heard of them and they sounded really good. Better than a lot of bands on the list. I’m gonna check them out!
I AGAINST I
watch mojo “punk bands”
also watch mojo- doesn’t mention the legendary band X at all
Funny how no kid know this kind of music now but they were all so popular for the time they were in it’s sad that the parents didn’t teach them the music unlike my dad did don’t think music now has been this bad ever.
