Excellent discussion about an often overlooked film movement! One thing that I can say as a Ukrainian about the significance of Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors in addition to everything you guys covered is its depiction of Hutsul/Carpathian culture. I live in the west but I’m sure even to many Ukrainians in Ukraine this film is fascinating because it portrays a part of Ukraine which is in many ways very different from the rest of it. This has a lot to do with how isolated people living in these mountains were. They have quite unique dialects which you can hear to some extent in this film. Very different from standard Ukrainian or the sort of Ukrainian you’d hear in the steppe of the eastern part of the country. Obviously regions like Galicia are not too far from the Carpathians but to someone like myself from the central part of Ukraine the Hutsuls’ way of life is something I’m only familiar with through this film and other videos. Living in the mountains is very different from living in the Ukrainian steppe. Sheep herding for example is a very common feature of Carpathian life. Even despite all the differences, I can still see and feel a lot of resemblance between Carpathian Ukrainians and Ukrainians in other regions, but I can only imagine how jarringly different what is portrayed in this film may seem to someone completely unfamiliar with Ukraine
Wow, thank you so much for providing us with that info and context, Illya, that was truly informative. And I'm glad you've enjoyed the dialogue, I believe it is important, especially today, to highlight and showcase Ukrainian cinema and culture. Cheers!
Thanks, as always. So many things out there to appreciate, being the cinema that you show us one of them. Being an advanced student of literary studies, I can say that in the formulation of your reflections, even your questions, the effort to elaborate an intelligent, poetic and at the same time objective script can be seen. Clearly, your guests bring what is necessary for an interesting and effective talk.
Thank very much for your kind words, Evil South. It is so incredibly gratifying to find people just as interested on this subject, like you, and to be able to exchange our thoughts and perspectives. Much appreciated indeed.
I just discovered your channel. I am very impressed and cannot wait to keep learning. Meanwhile, where can I get a copy of Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors? It sounds stunning!
Hey JB, thanks a lot for the appreciation. Regarding Parajanov's masterpiece, it has been released by Curzon/Artificial Eye and Kino Lorber as a DVD, and it is available on Amazon Prime. I believe there's a blu-ray version circulating around as well. Hope that helps. Cheers.
