Greetings everybody! A new upload is finally here, and a good way of starting off the New Year, one of the most classic and beloved games of the NES console, Mike Tyson's Punch Out! Any lover of this console knows about this title, one of Nintendo's tightest, cleanest and most recognized games. A game with a fun identity, popular graphic sprites, yet seriously challenging with memorization and test of patience and reaction-time. But also is loved in another way, its music! While the OST is fairly short with fanfares and short looped songs, the "Punch Out" theme is wildly recognized and praised. The soundtrack makes use of some fanfares from the original Punch Out Arcade title that Koji Kondo composed for, many public domain tracks, with representative country themes for the boxers, and the "Look Sharp/Be Sharp" being in a way the secondary main theme of this game. But the two popular tracks, the "Boxing Theme" and "Training Theme" are still well known to this day and praised for its energy! I took the liberty of extending those respective tracks much longer to make it more satisfying, even for how short this OST is, all its music and SFX are loved, even the impressive samples!
On this game we have three composers, as is given to us in the Credits screen which is accessed by passcode: Kenji Yamamoto, Akito Nakatsuka & Yukio Kaneoka! Interestingly, on the reboot entry in the series for the Wii, the credits on that game attribute "Music of NES Punch-Out!!" to just Kenji Yamamoto, making it likely he composed the main Boxing and Training/Credits themes and all the original themes, with Akito and Yukio likely contributing Arrangements/Sound Programming and/or just SFX's. Though this game does use Akito Nakatsuka's Sound Driver, and this was actually the last proper music credit given to Yukio Kaneoka, the creator of the soundchip for the NES/Famicom. The credits are an interesting case on this one, but at the very least we know those three were still involved in the music/sound of this game, and praise to each of them for still giving us great tunes!
The game was later re-released in 1990 (and again under the "Classics Series" in 1992) under just "Punch-Out!!", a great idea in retrospect so it made re-releasing this game easy to use this version instead of dealing with copyright and any fees to use Mike Tyson's likeness, Mr. Dream is just like Mike Tyson in the first version, but just palette swapped. There is also a "Gold Version" exclusive in Japan on the Famicom which is technically the first version of Punch Out before it was given a public release, this Gold cart was to be given as a prize during the "Famicom Disk System's Famicom Golf: U.S. Course tournament." This version actually has subtle differences with its music, and some track differences, so definitely will have to upload it in the future! ;)
I know, a lot of info on this title, but its well known for a good reason and has some good fun history behind it. I apologize for slow uploads again on the channel, just busy with life, but doing the best I can for myself and really want to do better this year. And no promises, but if uploads increase, I know that will be a benefit for all. Big love and thanks to all my Patron supporters, if you'd like to support and have your name featured you can do so on my Patreon, thanks everyone and Happy New Year! www.patreon.com/nikotengoku

9:01- I always loved this theme. Feels so desperate and fearful. Goes so well with hearing the Game Over theme and seeing Little Mac slouched over in that chair in a depressed heap after the match ends. You can just hear him thinking “guess I’m just a no good bum after all…”

Indeed, a shame that composer has to share the same name with the incredible Nintendo composer. Thankfully the other one is never in my memory so this Kenji Yamamoto reigns supreme! :D

Hey I just want to say, when I was 13 I used to listen to your old rips. I just turned 20 and I’ve got to say, I’m very thankful for this channel. You have some of the highest quality rips of these games soundtracks. Thank you for your work. If I could make one suggestion it would be nice to be able to listen to contra hard corps in mono. Every other rip is in stereo and you need headphones or else it sounds weird coming from a phone speaker.

Thanks for listening for so long, I would say my stuff is only finally being of highest quality from these Revamps, but appreciate it! And sadly I only work with 8-Bit stuff at the moment, if you look around you could find what you're looking for with Contra: Hard Corps, or be able to make it mono yourself with the original sound files and certain video game music players, there is lots out there! :)

    Among the sound effects...
Great Tiger, when the ruby on his turban flashes to alert Little Mac of a special attack, has the same sound as Link using magic in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.
Soda Popinski's laugh is a variation of Ganon's laugh from Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, as well as in the NES Kung Fu (Spartan X) whenever Thomas loses out to a boss.
Unused in this game, though still in the program code, is another recycled Zelda II sound effect: the "oof!" when Link gets hit by an enemy.

I was dipping back into your channel again over the last few days and was surprised to see a new, iconic upload, wow.
Consider re-upping “Kage” (Shadow of the Ninja) to your current standard.
Much respect for the extended length of the training and fight themes. Only thing better for the latter would be a SFX narrative of standing up to Bald Bull’s charge seamless into the title theme (with audience effect). Recently did that with a VGM ost remaster and it can enhance the experience.

    • @Nikos8BitStereo
      @Nikos8BitStereo  3 месяца назад +2

Oh that OST will certainly get the treatment, along with many other Natsume titles! And yes I like the songs to feel worthwhile listening on these uploads if they loop is too short. And yes its tough when wanting to include musical moments that are only heard like that in-game, but for the most part I try to keep it simple with just the Songs and SFX/VFX's heard from the OST! :)

@@Nikos8BitStereo Thanks for the engagement. I did a passion project involving to demo that approach after my original comment.
I took presenting both in a different direction than the current standard approach. All stage tracks were extended as well, keeping one in that headspace matching playing the game. Though I kept the score pure when SFX were used alongside. On a different unpublished prior project for example, the essential sequence of SFX during a boss fight and victory fanfare enhanced the tension and nostalgia, it depends on the game.
It’s available for consideration on this platform. Thanks for all you do.
