I would have been shocked if he took the job. The Lakers are just about guaranteed to be one of the worst teams in the NBA in a few years barring incredible luck. He'd be costing himself millions if he took the job because he wouldn't see the entire $70 million, would lose half of what he does get to taxes, and then would be foregoing the guaranteed UConn money because Connecticut will always be a top Big East team. Assuming he doesn't get coaching burnout, that could be a loss of tens of millions of dollars he could have earned by staying put.

Dan played this well. Sometimes you go for the interview just for the heck of it just to take it back to your current boss.

Goes to show you money is not the only factor, you could've offered him 500 million. He rather focus on his passion of coaching young adults, be the boss of his situation and not be pressured by an old LBJ and Lakers media

4:30 Today I learned, Dan Hurley's current salary and net worth of 40+ million is NOT "life altering" money. lol
1 million is life altering for a lot of people. Can buy them a home cash (in most areas), get them completely out of debt, pay student loans, and a jump start on a nice life. In many cases, it can do all of those things.
Sometimes these players/media people forget what it's like to be the little guy who can only dream of ever owning a million dollars, let alone 40 million.

Are you seriouus First Take? You guys are postulating that a college
Coach should be paid more than Pop, Kerr, Ty, etc? Knowing the results of college coaches in the NBA. Yall aint serious. That was a good offer.

You want the Lakers to pay a never coached in the NBA coach more guaranteed monet than any other NBA coach?? Like are we serious? He's proven to be a GREAT college coach but we're talking apples to oranges.

It's called leverage. Dan is sitting pretty now with his current negotiation with UConn. And then now every NBA GM knows they better come with way more than 11M/yr if you want to pluck the best college coach.

I wouldn't say that, he has never coached a single NBA game. It was a definitely a very fair deal.
