Dan Hurley did right! He simply used the lakers offer as leverage for his next UCONN contract!!!
Nah, UConn was gonna pay him either way. And Woj reported the two offers have nothing to do with each other, and he was already re-negotiating before UConn had any idea about this lakers stuff. So unless you know better than Woj, no. Homie wanted to be able to do his thing without the ego of 'Bron, and stay for a 3rd.
@@CrazyCurryKing I also heard the reporting of Woj! I understand that he was already in negotiations, but by speaking to the lakers - his price with UCONN goes up even more is my point!
Facts
It a 2yr job, with no control
I would have been shocked if he took the job. The Lakers are just about guaranteed to be one of the worst teams in the NBA in a few years barring incredible luck. He'd be costing himself millions if he took the job because he wouldn't see the entire $70 million, would lose half of what he does get to taxes, and then would be foregoing the guaranteed UConn money because Connecticut will always be a top Big East team. Assuming he doesn't get coaching burnout, that could be a loss of tens of millions of dollars he could have earned by staying put.
@@Zenigundammost NBA coaches take jobs that involve some losing you think they care about that? I promise you they don't view coaching jobs like you think
@@LonghornsLegend If he had gone to the Lakers, he would have been fired well before the sixth year of his contract. You can't win without talent in the NBA. At UConn, he just got one of the best guards in the country, Aidan Mahaney, to transfer in from Saint Mary's and already has an elite team with the other players he has coming in and coming back, even without Cooper Flagg. Staying was an easy decision. He didn't want to be another Rick Pitino.
@@Zenigundam but again he doesn't really view it like you do you're trying to put your opinion on it. If it was this simple he didn't need the interview or would have already said he will never go to the NBA.
@@LonghornsLegend Decisions like these come down to the financial particulars. He went to the interview to leverage as much guaranteed money he could out of the offer. He knew the Lakers wouldn't accede to his contract demands, but he had to make the effort in case he did actually field an offer that would make him forget about college basketball.
Hurley was never gonna leave Uconn, he just wanted Uconn to know what they were about to lose if they let him go. Seth Greenberg was way ahead of everyone's takes on this matter.
And it makes sense that Greenberg knows that, since he's covered college compared to everyone else, that doesn't!
So Hurley was talking to the Lakers to gain leverage?

Let's look at his options.
Sign a $70 million dollar contract( ~$10 million after taxes)

Live every day of your life servicing a player that has way too much power and influence compared to his current performance.
Possibly being forced to draft that player's son, who is overhyped and has serious red flags, then be blamed if he doesn't turn into a superstar.
Am I missing anything?
This doesn't sound like that great of an opportunity if you ask me.
Gotta live in BS California to top it all off.
Not to mention getting fired three years into the job, having to fight to get the rest of the money on his contract, watching someone else win with his players at Connecticut while earning the money that should have been his, and then having to work at ESPN as a telecaster or studio analyst for a year before landing another job and starting all over at another program.

Jeanie Buss is one of the poorest owners in the league. It was $70M/6-years. Ty Lue got the same $70M but only 5 years. Jeanie should’ve offered $100M/5. He would’ve took an annual $20M payday without hesitation.

This has nothign to do with money. It's to do with every Lebron coach getting the blame for not being able to win with a team that he forced to be gutted. Why give up your NCAA legacy for a 2 year run in the nba.
LeNut guts every team. Formed multiple super teams in the Leastern Conference to stay relevant
Yeah they avoided the elephant in the room that is LeBron. How they twist themselves into pretzels not trying to state the obvious is comical at this point.

The top marginal tax rate in CT is 6.99%. The top rate in CA is 13.3%, my large friends.
I'd take job security in UConn over coaching the Lakers any day of the week.
I’d also choose stability and less stress over being a Laker coach.
What’s crazy is LA offered him twice his current salary. He would’ve been the 6th highest paid coach, in LA, & gets AD/LBJ. To decline and say he’s focused on winning says a lot about LA.
Yea, that they cheap 😭
Dan is going to restructure his contract he's has the leverage.
But yeah the lakers aren't about winning basketball, kinda like the Dallas cowboys
He wasn’t going to get paid twice his salary. With Cali taxes, that’s half his salary. He made the right decision.
That’s exactly the problem, he would’ve been only the 6th highest paid coach. Monty Williams would still be making more than Hurley and he just finished with the #1 worst record in the league 😂
@@adh2298 Monty has been in the league forever though. I understand that.
In California 6 years $70 million is actually like 6 years $29 million after state and federal taxes. Definitely not worth it
If both offers are say $10M a year, California has a 13.3% income tax vs 6.99%. So that’s $630k less per year. And way more problems.
Hurley makes about 5.3M a season.
Lakers offered 11.6M
With your tax numbers thats
0.37M -- 4.9M current
1.54M -- 10M offered
Basically turned down double his current salary.
Lakers head coaching job is a crap job, it’s obvious nobody wants it.
The Lakers need to employ Mark Jackson. What is the deal?
Mark Jackson is just not anywhere near good enough to coach a contender. His coaching philosophies rely heavily on theoretical strategy, like prioritizing defense on a star vs hem setting up for teammates. In reality, a coach like Mazzulla only letting Luka cook has led to a 2-0 lead in the finals.
@@BoltonDenzfalse. He is exactly what that team needs right now. A hard nosed prick with a Jesus complex. That's who you need to handle LBJ and AD.
lebron cant handle an authority figure like Mark Jackson
@BoltonDenz are you joking Steve Kerr got all of that man's praise. Mark did all of the work to build the warriors.
70 million for 6 years after taxes is probably around ten a year, 2 million more than the 8mil he turned down and we’re assuming Connecticut will pay more, with higher taxes and cost of living and moving his family no wonder I wouldn’t pick up the headaches the lakers would give him either

He said no to lebron, stop spinning it into money
A college coach going to being a first time NBA coach wouldn’t warrant top three highest paid NBA coach anyway

the primary problem there is lebron , he is a proven coach killer with the most fired coaches in NBA history with a total of 8 and counting
For all of the talking not one person in this video brought up the possibility of Lebron being a factor of him turning down the job. Coaches want control, especially when they are coming into a situation that they are there to "clean ship". With LeBron and clutch sports, calling the shots in LA, dictating who the Lakers are going to draft (Bronny) there's a good possibility money wasn't the only factor in Hurley declining.

Bro saw the hate Ham received and said the money ain’t worth that lol
That lead in production was 👍👍👍
Mark Jackson, Sam Cassell, and JJ Redick. Am I missing someone? 😅
Idk why this is shocking so many people. The Lakers have notoriously underpaid their coaches.
It's called leverage. Dan is sitting pretty now with his current negotiation with UConn. And then now every NBA GM knows they better come with way more than 11M/yr if you want to pluck the best college coach.
I wouldn't say that, he has never coached a single NBA game. It was a definitely a very fair deal.
Stephen A must not be aware how lit MSG be during the BIG EAST tournament
Like my mom once said all money isn't good money
