Yes ! This is the perfect podcast to catch up on any of the new revelations of understanding sleep ! Haven't seen Mr Walker since his Rogan talk a few years ago and that one stands out, for me.
Did you see recent article in Apple news? Made the conclusion of sleeping alone is much wiser and better for my sleep I’d rather sleep on a hard floor with few blankets instead with my partner in a bed . Although I have extremely bad back and I’ve probably increased my % of getting dementia ten fold just past two years with averaging 2-4 hours of napping through the night . I only recently started sleeping on floor and felt it’s better .
Matt I’ve watched your TedTalk, read docs from you, shared them w friends, thank you for your work! I think probably millions of people are depriving themselves from sleeping, I’ve done it myself. Now I urge everyone the importance of sleeping well for our health. Lex thank you for keep trying make the World better, your podcasts are deeply educational, smart and sincere. Greetings from an Engineer in Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Matthew is a great educator, one of the few books I gave 5/5 stars, it's that good. It totally changed my mind about the priority between diet, exercise and sleep.
Even if we take exercise out of the equation, before reading his book, I always thought that a good healthy diet is basically all you need and had a sort of "we sleep when we're dead" mentality. It turns out that sleep is much more important before my priority was like diet > exercise > sleep, now diet > sleep > exercise, but diet and exercise start to move on the same level tbh.
Mathew walker changed my life🙏. I struggle to begin to have words to describe. narcolepsy impacts every single aspect of life and is more terrifying then anyone can ever imagine, and that's just the day time sleepiness the handful of other symptoms are enough to consider giving up. My narcolepsy went from aggressively dangerous to nearly comfortable thanks to this wonderful human being. I've had many doctors who could clearly care less about my well-being: 1 doctor told me to stop my cataplexy just not to laugh or get angry. 2 none of them REALLY gave me actions or information to help... scientists are the best doctors..👍 THANKS MATTHEW WALKER! Oh and Lex is a bad ass too, your killing it! your an inspiration thanks for what your do and thanks for another great podcast 👍
Matt was the only person who educated me on the fact that weed suppresses rem sleep. My sleep and overall quality of life has improved drastically since I quit smoking and I have him to thank
Ironically this knowledge led me to smoke/vape MORE (in evenings) to avoid edibles with their longer-lasting effects. That said I'm low dose with either, and wouldn't recommend either for falling asleep.
@@csn583 doesn’t even have to be before bed, long term use even if you’re not high when you go to sleep will cause it. It takes about a week for me to dream again when I stop smoking
But now you’re not smoking weed and giving yourself access to ultra rapid mind body improvement. (Yeah yeah, muh ‘can get that without weed just fine’, ok).
I love Matt Walker's thoughtful responses, and how he stayed true to his vision of bringing the truth from the health perspective of sleep to everyone. He has definitely impacted how I approach sleep. Many thanks for the wonderful messaging and staying true to your passion.
That Matt's hair isn't his but that of a hairdresser's cream solution is important .I don't hesitate to say, who can you trust when they present as they imagine they wished they were. I keep imagine these two..out on the range roping calf's, returning to a campfire, then carrying on about memory enhancing, triple espresso's & skipping two days sleep in order to collaborate with silicon valley think tanks.., man Im so deeply grateful not to be so scattered as to what a valuable life means🎈
Dr Walker's book 'Why We Sleep'...is a fantastic insight to NOT only Why...but WHAT happens when going into the 'Daily Coma'. Sleeping well must be the single most important piece to staying awake for it.
Why We Sleep is one of my favorite books. It's incredibly heartfelt and compassionate. Even besides the vast amounts of referenced research, the advice is really impactful on a human level. It helped me make more conscientious choices about how to spend my time, awake and asleep, in general.
I really respect Matt for recognising and explaining that he sounded a bit puritanical in the book and in the public a few years ago. I actually got quite anxious about my own sleep, coffee (which I really enjoy), and circadian rythm.
31:25 - 32:35 this is such a deep thought! so good. This is one of my favorite episodes so far. The mystery of sleep and the dreaming state and the questions it makes us ask ourselves about consciousness are just so fascinating. Matt Walker is absolutely brilliant in his delivery on the subject here. Nice work!
Lex, I don't know if you will read this, but, if I remember correctly, when I first saw one or two videos in which you appeared, I didn't like you. I think you were criticizing someone I admired, or whatever (not that you care). However, I have grown to love your vulnerability, mental acuity, and willingness to discuss things we the listeners either have battled with ourselves or didn't even think needed to be discussed! This interview, in particular, was simply amazing. Matt is a great guy with a huge heart. He is genuine (from what I can tell), just as you are. I really wish you success with your channel, teaching, and all you do. Your upbringing (Russian, if I am not mistaken) really seems to have prepared you to help us "Westerners" see things from a different perspective. This interview went way beyond sleep and has encouraged me to get back into my passions (while sustaining them with good sleep haha), some of which include research and asking big questions like you guys do. 10/10. I hope to watch this interview 2/3 more times.
I love Matthew Walker so much. He's helped me and by now probably millions of others gain serious knowledge and insight into a topic that's been somehow mostly disregarded by society. My appreciation for this podcast and others he's done is immense. Thank you so extremely much for both of your work, it's 100% changed my life.
I just want to thank this man for making me feel like I'm not inferior for not being a morning person. I've been given so much shit my whole life called lazy and unmotivated and everything in between. But i'm productive as all hell. I'm just productive between noon and midnight.
I am, as a chemist that has a t-shirt that says : " eat, sleep, chemistry, repeat", utterly fascinated by your ideas about enjoying your life as a scientist even if it doesn't make any sense to other people. In this journey, I repeat to myself what David Goggins says: A lot of people don't understand me, I'm glad you don't understand me. Merry Christmas, good on you!
This guy changed my life to the better. Three years ago I saw him on Joe Rogans Podcast and was in the " all nighter are ok now and then" and "sometimes you need to sacrifice sleep to get things done / increase your free time" attitdue big time. After I saw it I really tried to get 7.5 hours of sleep every day (it wasn't always possible to get it on one shot because of my shitty job but if I couldn't I tried to sleep after work that day). After all that time I can say I got way less sick and if I got sick it wasn't that bad. I became more productive and creative after all that time I now really can feel it if I'm sleep deprived and got "addicted" to get enough sleep. So if you are unsure I would say give it a try at least for 3 months after that you won't go back ever again. If you have to manage your time *do not cut your sleeping time* search for other things to cut but not sleep. If you skip sleep your wear and tear on your body is too high and you will pay the price either now (by becoming sick easier and thus loosing all your time you got from all nighter anyway) or later with heart attacks and brain failures.
His points about Ramadan actually seem helpful when you look at it in the context of the goals of the spiritual month: it’s encouraged to stay up and pray. Sex is not allowed while fasting (sunrise to sunset), etc
Matt Walker and Lex Fridman are legends, and are as wise and fascinating as they are also humble and curious to keep learning and understanding. This conversation spans some very interesting, useful, sometimes even unexpected, territory, and is WELL worth watching and listening to, I would say, for anyone who can take the time to do so.
Actually about a month ago, I had an experience where I had no sense of identity in a dream, and awoke in the same state.... no sense of who I was, or what my past had been. It took about 10 seconds from upon waking (amid increasing concern) for everything to "snap back" into place. I've had this happen 4-5 times in my life, always when having what feels to be a very deep sleep. I have been experimenting with potassium supplementation lately, and have been experiencing sleep deeper than I have in quite a few years. I've asked several people whether they have experienced this, but have yet to find someone who has.
Look into Ramana Maharshi and forget about supplements. If you begin to meditate and investigate your identity you will likely make great progress. M.: Sleep is not ignorance; it is your pure state. Wakefulness is not knowledge; it is ignorance. There is full awareness in sleep; there is total ignorance in waking. Your real nature covers both, and extends beyond. The Self is beyond knowledge and ignorance. Sleep, dream and waking are only modes passing before the Self. They proceed whether you are aware or not. That is the state of the Jnani in whom pass the states of waking, samadhi, deep sleep and dream, like the bulls moving, standing or being unyoked when the passenger is asleep as aforesaid. These questions are from the point of view of the ajnani; otherwise these questions do not arise. (From 'Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi' 313)
I've experienced this multiple times generally because of a heroic dose of psilocybin the night before or excessive amounts of high grade marijuana. A few times from being awakened during night terrors or sleep walking.
This is often referred to as ego death and very common when taking high doses of psychedelics, infact some people intentionally try to experience this, just because of the many positive effects you can have after the experience. It can make you see life from a completely different perspective.
Wow, Matt was super articulate and measured in his responses. I love his work and have read his book: Why We Sleep. I've seen lots of interviews with Matt, but Lex added a very unique and deep element that brought out aspects of Matt that I haven't seen before.
The was a couple of questions when Lex idealistic conceptions challenged some of the core arguments but Matt handled them beautifully. I enjoyed this interview immensely.
I love Matthew Walker. This to date is the best interview I’ve seen of him. Lex shows his youthful playful spirit and cuts sone of the seriousness of Matthew’s personality and in return we get a joyous result in our response. Thank you Lex, thank you Matthew, for being you. ♥️🙏🏼

Matthew Walker gets me to feel excited about sleeping. Really. I look forward to sleeping now more than ever. I love dreams even if they are nightmares sometimes.
Thank you, Lex. On the one hand, it's wonderful to have someone who can ask questions that are as good as, if not better than, the answers. On the other hand, it's amazing to see how imperfect we are and how much potential we have as a species as a result of that imperfection. Спасибо.
Was feeling a bit yucky today so I thought I’d lie down and listen… I actually dozed off! Not because it was boring but both of your voices are so soothing and calming to my ear! Thank the Lord for rewind! Love this conversation!
What an incredibly eloquent and thoughtful man Matt Walker is! I so loved this whole conversation! Lex, I'm not sure if you'll ever read this, but I too fall in the "night owl" category. I'm an artist, and extremely passionate about what I do, unfortunately all my creativity and ideas come to me in full drive at nighttime. I've had to alter my natural internal clock at times, but it never feels natural for me. And I too get a lot of well intentioned people giving me concerned advice at times. Ack!
I just recently watched Matt Walker's interview with Andrew Huberman and it was just packed with biology. I find it quite interesting that this interview with Lex actually covers different aspects of sleep/brain. I thoroughly enjoyed both.
I have issues with stress and anxiety. If I don't get a good night's sleep, 8ish hours, it really increases my anxiety that next day. One of the reasons it's improved over the years is due to getting good sleep and rest in general.
Please work as hard as you can and as much as you can. I am envious that you have found your passion and are enfolded in it! Yes, I may live a decade or so longer than you and other brilliant scientists, but you will live a much richer life than myself and many others. Work your ass off! And thank you for sharing your brilliance in your podcasts.
Talking about the need to remember the names of titles of book and papers (and the authors' names) reminds me of the lawyers need not only to know legal principles, but to know the cases that established them.
Wonderful interview, thank you, always a pleasure to listen to Matthew, he has such energy and engaging way of presenting information but this one felt special, deeper, more meaningful and emotional. I have read his book as well and would highly recommend it to everyone, I actually have gifted it to several people and will keep doing it!
I really enjoyed meditating on this quite observant notion that "anything we do today will seem foolish to the people 100 years from now". Touché, sir! Take it easy guys! (But take it ;-)
Many people would assume that sleeping is a loss of productivity. The case to made is efficiency and optimization. LEX, sleep the neccessary amount according to how you feel. Just bc someone says you should sleep more doesnt mean you should produce less. I personally sleep 6-8 depending on how hard a day i had. Wake up every morning no alarm and always eat at the same times. It works for me on every level. I would love to see you try this. I also would like you to try and quit caffiene and coffee.
Dr Walker about Dr Huberman, "He's a Gatling gun of information. And it's pristine." WOW!!! Thank you Dr Fridman and Dr Walker - your work and your passion is inspiring!!!
Awesome, now i found something to do while bored at my university lol Would love to see some economic and/or financial people back here man!! As always, the best podcast there is!
In Spanish, at least in Mexico, when we have to think about a problem we say "Lo voy a consultar con la almohada" = "I'll consult it with the pillow" [Time: 1:01:10]
Lex: "Can I ask you a philosophical question, before we get into the fun details?" *Me Thinking* "is there really a differentiation there? and how is this NOT fun already? This conversation is fascinating AND entertaining!"
Sorry to disappoint you, but Walker constantly commits research misconduct and misinterprets scientific data. Just search 'Matthew Walker Guzey' for an article pretty much debunking his book Why We Sleep
47:00 I'm the same, very high tolerance for caffeine. Usually I drink about 1L of coffee a day but I've had plenty of days when I drank 2L. Most days it's 1L of coffee in the morning and 2L of green tea in the afternoon and evening :)
Well I've only started drinking coffee heavily when I quit smoking, about 8 and a half years ago; I did that from one day to the next after smoking 10-15 strong cigarettes a day for 10 years or so. My sleep patterns haven't changed that much. In fact if I drink less or not at all for a week or so I sleep exactly the same. My heart rate and blood pressure are also normal. So it doesn't seem to have a strong effect on me.
I was pretty chubby because of reduced physical activity during the pandemic so I cut my food intake by about 2/3 from ~1800 kcal to 600 kcal or less, single meal taken at mid day or slightly later. The reduced food intake and spacing the last meal to about 8 hours before I go to bed seemed to have added about an hour of sleep while drinking more/less coffee/tea doesn't seem to do much.
watching this at 4am battling insomnia ...sleep is necessary for the brain and body to perform maintenance aspects of metabolism. people go crazy from sleep deprivation, try it out sometime n see.
Thanks for the conversation, Lex. Superb as always. Can you ask Matt more about conscious dreaming studies and effects if you’ll have another round in the future? It has really interesting ideas and seemingly affects the learning process on the level close to the real world practices.
It’s wonderful to listen to honest conversation and Lex being open and vulnerable about his life, but there’s a limitation to our honesty, because it is coming from a limited and self protective place, Lex, when you talk about passion, are you talking about the passion of ambition, or that passion is coming from passion to life, which can have connection to compassion and Love?
Over the years I've worked different shifts, the worst is swing shift. I would never work a swing shift again, yet now I'm older and feel stuck in a swing shift mentality and its killing me.

Yeah, you learn that basically diet and exercise won’t get you far at all if you don’t also catch your Z’s
@James xxx for example?
A-MAZING! Couldn’t stop watching! Best interview with Matt Walker I’ve seen! I LOVE the exchange and challenges Lex introduces! Thank you both!
Because of Matt Walker I'm much more conscious and strict about my sleep schedule. Thank you Matt!
Me too
Mathew walker changed my life🙏.
1:29:00
Lex: I know all these great people who didn't sleep a lot.
Matt: Yeah, I know a lot more about them.
I never dreamed when I smoked weed. Alcohol has a similar affect on me as well. Probably a disruption in deep sleep.
But now you’re not smoking weed and giving yourself access to ultra rapid mind body improvement. (Yeah yeah, muh ‘can get that without weed just fine’, ok).
congrats on quitting, enjoy improved well being.👌🥕
*Literally about to go to sleep and this gets posted. Lex you sage*
I love Matt Walker's thoughtful responses, and how he stayed true to his vision of bringing the truth from the health perspective of sleep to everyone. He has definitely impacted how I approach sleep. Many thanks for the wonderful messaging and staying true to your passion.
Lex surely has anticipated this meeting of minds for a while
Matt’s hair is the best advertisement for the value of sleep I’ve seen
Don’t ever change ~ Please always stay as genuine as you are.
Don’t take too much potassium.
@@vicgoogle4514 Thanks, that's a good point to make for anyone reading this comment.
"thank you for what you do for the world and for me included".
+1 to that! Thank you so much Lex 😊
I love Matthew Walker. This to date is the best interview I’ve seen of him. Lex shows his youthful playful spirit and cuts sone of the seriousness of Matthew’s personality and in return we get a joyous result in our response. Thank you Lex, thank you Matthew, for being you. ♥️🙏🏼
Sleeping is a nice thing. Pretty happy you are trying it Lex
Matt, your book, masterclass and various talks never cease to amaze. Thanks for having another wonderful guest, Lex.
I just love the Scent of a Woman chat! Integrity is EVERYTHING! And I feel the same way about the movie and Al Pacino's acting, esp that hearing scene- the best speech ever!
-Beautiful flow of conversation
-Matt Walker's passion, amazing educational skill, lots of really apt analogies and quotes regarding the physiology of sleep
-Lex's talent at being a really smooth interlocutor
-An extremely interesting and useful topic
....made this a beautiful experience.
Thank you
Matthew Walker gets me to feel excited about sleeping.
Quitting coffee did wonders for my anxiety and sleep. I feel now as if coffee held me hostage for 10 years.
Just found this podcast its 4:40am in the uk and excited to binge watch !! Thank you !!
Ack!
Nice to see two so knowledge persons being so humble. Sure role models for me!
I was waiting for Matt to eventually come to the podcast, and it finally happened
Currently skipped a good night's sleep while listening to Matt Walker: Sleep podcast. Life is interesting. And so is sleep.
After Matt’s masterclass he became one if my favourite scientists. Thank you, Lex, for making this episode!
You should try and have Naval on. Would be a fantastic discussion.
Lex "It's Kind of A Dance Between" Fridman
You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams. Such a beautiful quote! 🥰
Lex this conversation was awesome. You have such a unique style of asking questions and sharing. Matt's work is so interesting.
Loved this guy on Huberman. Made me realize sleeping once a week is gonna kill me.
Jesus Christ once a week wtf
Pretty sure once a week would kill you within a few months
@@orirune3079 I've decided I need to quit the drugs. This guy and Huberman spoke some sense into me.
@@rayneweber7942 Nice! Good luck to you!
@@rayneweber7942 Way to go man! Keep it up.
Great explanation by Matthew Walker. Thanks sir for explaining the importance of sleep.
Dr Walker about Dr Huberman, "He's a Gatling gun of information. And it's pristine."
WOW!!!
Thank you Dr Fridman and Dr Walker - your work and your passion is inspiring!!!
Awesome, now i found something to do while bored at my university lol
Would love to see some economic and/or financial people back here man!!
As always, the best podcast there is!
I’ve been WAITING for Matt Walker to come on here. FINALLY. ❤️
I was so looking forward to this conversation of yours with Jim.
His JRE appearance was super intriguing
@James xxx yet countless people experience improvements by following his advice
@James xxx how so?
what a beautiful conversation and a show of respect. Thank you for this
In Spanish, at least in Mexico, when we have to think about a problem we say "Lo voy a consultar con la almohada" = "I'll consult it with the pillow" [Time: 1:01:10]
Lex: "Can I ask you a philosophical question, before we get into the fun details?"
*Me Thinking* "is there really a differentiation there? and how is this NOT fun already?
This conversation is fascinating AND entertaining!"
This guy has real depth,he could be talking about monopoly
and I wuld still listen.
I can feel a real introspective honesty coming from him
Sorry to disappoint you, but Walker constantly commits research misconduct and misinterprets scientific data. Just search 'Matthew Walker Guzey' for an article pretty much debunking his book Why We Sleep
@@IvanSolonenko I was refering to the person not the profession
@@rexdrabble4988 Fair enough, but if the guy tells bs as a means of livelihood, can we really talk about introspective honesty
47:00 I'm the same, very high tolerance for caffeine. Usually I drink about 1L of coffee a day but I've had plenty of days when I drank 2L. Most days it's 1L of coffee in the morning and 2L of green tea in the afternoon and evening :)
Holy crap, how though?
2:05:12 : A very good analogy on what is involved in going to sleep...
I slept so good while trying to listen to this.
watching this at 4am battling insomnia ...sleep is necessary for the brain and body to perform maintenance aspects of metabolism. people go crazy from sleep deprivation, try it out sometime n see.
I should be sleeping, but instead I'm watching this.
I have just listened to Clara Sousa-Silva and Michael Malice in entirety and I'm working in 6 hours! And then I see this!!!!
Literally everyone
It’s 11:00 AM in New Jersey where are you bro😂😭
Thanks for the conversation, Lex. Superb as always. Can you ask Matt more about conscious dreaming studies and effects if you’ll have another round in the future? It has really interesting ideas and seemingly affects the learning process on the level close to the real world practices.
OMFG YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I get so hyped when I see a Lex guest whose literature ive delved into.
Thanks so much both of yall.
Wow, what a resource to have in the podcast space. Thanks for joining the space, Matt! I've subbed to the podcast. Looking forward to learning.
Wow! Another one for the record books. Amazingly useful content, and fantastic human connection between the two. Bravo, gents.
Over the years I've worked different shifts, the worst is swing shift. I would never work a swing shift again, yet now I'm older and feel stuck in a swing shift mentality and its killing me.
Matt Walker on the JRE was one of my favourite Rogan podcasts.
Loved this episode, one of my favorite so far, can't wait to get started on Matt's book. Keep up the great work Lex!
Pretty ironic he is a sleep researcher with such a soothing and relaxing voice. He could definitely put me to sleep 🥱😴
Matt's book "Why we sleep" completely changed how I viewed sleep.
"Being a scientist is not what i do its who i am" that was deep
