    Interesting band scan on the balcony outside your hotel, Andre. 📻🙂 It's ironic that one can't go anywhere without receiving powerful and clear transmissions from CRI or CGTN Radio. ☺️
    Whether one likes it or not, China is really serious about reigning supreme on shortwave radio. I'm not surprised if CRI keeps track of export sales of all of the Chinese brands (Tecsun, XHDATA, Retekess, Qodosen, Raddy, etc) and uses the data to gauge the global popularity of shortwave broadcasting. 📻🌍
    While the sales of radios cannot possibly surpass that of smartphones, I think the overall market for shortwave radios is growing albeit slowly. Beaming powerful, high bandwidth transmissions in multiple languages on multiple frequencies all over the world ensures that listeners will take notice of CRI and CGTN Radio stations.
    Back in the 80s, Radio Beijing was just one of those Far East radio stations that only SWL'ers bother to tune in, just like Voice of Korea today. CRI has since replaced traditional broadcasting giants like BBC and VoA and it's become a mainstream broadcasting power on shortwave.

      @swlistening  9 дней назад +2

      I hope you are right, it would be great if the global sales of shortwave radios were growing 🙂
      The funny thing about China though is that so many of their SW transmissions appear to be just music, like channel markers, with no programming. But there is no doubt about it, they are serious about shortwave.
      I remember from the 1980s that Radio Beijing used to be one of my more difficult catches. How times have changed!

      I've done some SWL during my last trip to Thailand a year and a half ago, and well... the Chinese stations were pretty overwhelming, blanketing most of the bands with a lot of spilling over adjacent frequencies. It was making it hard to catch anything else.

      @@swlistening When I resumed my SWL hobby during Covid-19, XHDATA sold just the grey colored D-808, while its lower tiered models like the D-328 were available in just black. Since then the company has introduced the yellow D-608WB, the D-219 in grey and silver while the D-220 can be purchased in orange and green livery.
      Meanwhile Tecsun had also added colorful variants of its analogue R-9012 although they are domestic China market models.
      Tecsun also added the PL-320 receiver, which I think was a bold and risky marketing move. The company already had several non SSB shortwave models like the PL-310ET, PL-606, PL-360, PL-380, PL-398MP/BT and the DR-920C for buyers to choose from. They could have further improved the aging PL-330 but came out with the PL-320 instead. Don't forget the PL-368 is also sold in the funky orange color! 🙂
      The vertical format PL-36x series is already a hard sell, yet Tecsun was brave enough to introduce the amber variant. Just as we thought we've seen the last of the Tecsun S-2000, the manufacturer replaced it with the new S-2200x, competing with its H-501.
      And new players like Qodosen and ChoYong started to trickle in, while brands like Raddy, HangRonDa and Retekess made their presence further known. Last time we looked, C Crane and Eton radios are still alive and well. ☺️📻
      So yes, there is some growth in the shortwave radio manufacturing industry despite the closure of a few international broadcast stations. When is the time for the SWL community to start worrying? It's when CRI and CGTN Radio start shutting down their broadcast services! 🤣

      @@F4LDT-Alain Welcome to my side of the pond, _mon ami!_ At least in France you still have the BBC and other European shortwave stations broadcasting programmes in English and French.
      Here in Southeast Asia my frequency dial is populated by Chinese language programmes and they're mostly from China! That's not even counting Radio Taiwan International's Chinese language broadcasts! 😭

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  8 дней назад +1

      @@StratmanII This is very true. I also think the mere fact that there are still a number of Chinese companies making SW radios, and developing new radios, certainly shows that there is still a demand. And, perhaps, that interest in SW listening is actually growing...

    Hi Andre, nice to DX in such location.
    Have you heard Observatorio Nacional Brazil on 10 MHz? My best catch of it was in Portugal where it was like a local.
    Also surprised me sometime in Scotland during grey line propagation. Now in Slovakia I only hear the Italian time signal with music JN53DV or Italcable.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  11 дней назад

      It was a very nice location indeed! I haven't heard Brazil on 10 MHz, I usually hear WWVH there, often quite strongly. So I think it is probably much stronger than Brazil here at my location.

    Hi Andre glad you had a great time in a beautiful location I've been listening to Radio New Zealand on 13.775 its been really clear especially on the SDR I got a 24inch monitor and have been tuning the bands and getting used to the functions on SDR++ and exceeds my expectations where I was having problems pulling in some stations on the Tecsun the SDR was doing a great job there is plenty of settings to play with and the band spread works a treat however did you get your laptop sorted and are you in the process of installing the SDR Andre I'm sure you will be amazed with the result...

      Hi Stephen, very interesting that you should mention the SDR and SDR++. I literally just uploaded a video of Voice of Indonesia on my RTL-SDR, using SDR++. I got my laptop back just before my holiday.
      The RTL-SDR has really surprised me, especially for SSB listening. I have heard some very good ham signals (from the Seychelles, for example), and very good Volmet catches. I agree with you that the SDR, sometimes, seems to outperform the Qodosen (and the PL-680). I am surprised, but excited about the possibilities!

    I have really enjoyed your series of videos from Reunion Island.👍 I worked Reunion Island ( or 173 div as we refer to it on 11m) for the first time since the last solar cycle on 11m/cb today, from Northern England. I was in my car and and spoke to a Mr Patrick on 27.535 usb.
    I am SWLing 31m as I type.

There has been a station working out of Rwanda which would be nice to get in the log. Good luck with your Ham Licence. 👍👍👍It is something I too, would like to get around to doing.

    Very nice location to do your scan Andre. You are getting pretty much the same as I do here with the usual plethora of Chinese broadcasts, including the annoying use of CNR1 to jam. Here when CRN1 is used for jamming I get a mix depending on where the two transmitters are located with respect to my location. 1) I can here the station being jammed OK, 2) I get a double station, 3) CRN1 wins outright. Of course both situations 2 and 3 make the station being jammed unlistenable.
