Have the students trace their hands on heavy duty tagboard and have them cut them out to be glued or taped (heavy duty packing tape preferably) on to a thick craft stick. It helps them to remember to raise their hand to prevent blurting. I have been teaching for 25 years, and I hope that you did survive your first year.
Do you use flocabulary. If you dont i really recommend it. Its basically rap but it teaches kids. It has language arts, math , science and much more. Its a fun way to teach your kids they also have quizzes on the topic you choose. I really recommend it

I work subbing and that whole thing about that bouncing ball, once I know the school has them, I won't even take assignments from that school anymore. It's so distracting for the rest of the students. Also, I don't like centers. It's so hard when you have a group at the kidney table with you but you must also control the voice level and keeping on task of the other students.

What happened to the discipline of making kids (5th graders at that...just a year away from middle school) sit in ordered rows of desks or tables for an established period of time. It worked since the days of the one room school house. Why are millennials trying to change everything?
It's your personal space and items; why on Earth would students be taking things from your desk? "Talk out of turn," oh the horror. We're going to teach you to be independent as long as you follow the arbitrary rules. I'm sure you raise your hand during PLC or PD. Let's learn, but's discourage talking. And could you work in a few more cliches, please? Yea, because punishment is so effective.
