Parker is 100% correct about Store of Value preceding Medium of Exchange!
there won't be any exchanging of a particular currency if nobody wants the underlying currency.
if a merchant accepts currency A as payment but they're going to convert it to currency B the very next day, well, the merchant is willing to keep currency A as a SoV just for one day, or else it is completely worthless if nobody wants to keep currency A for any amount of time!

They rarely take possession at all. They use third party intermediaries at point of sale to convert to fiat so they don't hold it for even a second. Its never on their books. Thats a net price negative for the underlying digital asset. I know someone that does this. When i asked him why he does that he said "we accept btc" was only for marketing purposes.

Damn, Parker is right, NOSTR is decentralized when compared to Twitter, but not decentralized when measured against the decentralization of Bitcoin.

    • @rosstituteuk
      @rosstituteuk 11 месяцев назад +1

He implied that clients have the ability to censor users, but didn't acknowledge that users can simply select a different client... and take all of their data with them... they could even code their own client... and run their own relay... Parker didn't mention any of these aspects, which makes me wonder if he really understands the Nostr protocol fully. It's also possible he does not want to see the benefits of Nostr, as it solves many of the same problems that his business has set out to solve, namely Bitcoins identity / payment coordination problem.

  • @mutdogg21

  • @rosstituteuk

Parkers excellent, but he's not there yet re Nostr.
Nostr is the identity coordination layer for Bitcoin.
Censorship resistent, with multi relay redundancy.
You are not forced to use any single client, relay, server, or otherwise. It's a protocol, just like Bitcoin.
If a client censors you, use a different client.
If they censor you, also, write your own client.
If a relay censors you, use a different relay.
If they all censor you, run your own.
The point Parker misses with Nostr and Bitcoin, is that if your lines or communication are censored, Bitcoin can be as decentralised / censorship resistent as you like, but if you cannot communicate with your transaction counter party, how are you going to know where to send the Bitcoin? How do you pass your counter party a Lightning invoice?
This is the problem that Nostr solves: identity & payment coordination.

The answer given by Parker to why Bitcoin is not an inflation hedge was not great. A better answer would have been, trying to take out insurance against an issue when an issue is obvious, the premium you would pay would be as higher than the problem to be solved. Another good answer would be not placing a bet on the underdog football team and then trying to place a bet in-play when the underdog team is 2 goals up. His answer was okay, but not the best. I respect Parker a lot and I know it's hard to be perfect in live meetings and probably harder when it's being recorded too.

Most of the conversation was pretty good, but wow did I get confused toward the end with the Nostr conversation. Either he doesn't have all the information here or I don't (or both)... He talks about Nostr not being censorship because relays exist on servers and that's inherently censorable, but he doesn't even touch the idea that a person owns their own server with a relay and doesn't even allow the question to be asked without talking over the hosts and going on to a different topic. Why would a person running their own relay censor themselves? That's the big question I'd want to hear him talk on, but now I think he'd never allow the conversation to go there... Does he not understand? Does he feel somehow threatened? What is this attitude?
I don't mind that he wants to focus 100% energy on bitcoin, but demanding that of others is kind of unreasonable. Yes, I get that it's a big goal, I understand the importance over other things, and I know the urgency, but people don't work like that... If you throw 100% of your energy at one thing, you're not going to be working at 100% efficiency. People work best when we explore, and experiment, and play. That's how innovation happens, not by sitting someone in front of a screen and saying "no distractions until you're done." And again, the first 90% of the conversation was great! Where did this sudden left turn come from right at the end?

This morning fees were over $15. Thats a days salary for much of the poor around the globe. Priced out. Unless the 1mb block size is increased its impossible to scale. Banks can't use it as its public and won't comply with customer privacy laws. Sorry but as a payments platform it is just bad.

the block size debate is long since over. Bitcoin will scale in layers. This much is clear.
those who can afford it will onboard to Lightning. See wallets like Phoenix as a working example.
Those who cannot afford it will make use of federated / chaumian ecash style mints, which scale Lightning at no cost to the end user.

Parker refers to Bitcoin as Money and Language. This is important, they are not a very good equivalents.
Money is a human construct. It's complex, but even the Native Americans were shown how nature could be changed just so their Money could be beaten.
Bitcoin takes the Immutable Truth of the Universe and allows the Empathy for that Truth to be exchanged. It is still a human construct, however, unlike Money it is very very resistant to change. The nature upon which IT exists cannot be changed IT is beyond Money.
The reference to Bitcoin being Language, yes IT is Language, however, a construction of information that cannot contain untruths more commonly known as lies.
Those two references are very important, the human construct of Money of the past have allowed for the Empathy of the real human construct of rules to be changed.
That is fundamentally why Bitcoin is beyond Money and Language.

Peter comments that he gave a good discount to get a lump sum sponsorship deal paid in Bitcoin. He feels he could have been harmed as the deal price at spot $43k if he had to sell any of the Bitcoin at $15k.
The harm was done by not Dollar Cost Averaging, the deal should have been monthly or bimonthly payments at with also a distributed discount. Obviously the initial agreed value would be in Fiat, however that degrades slowly compared to the volatility downside risk. If Bitcoin just went up, the return would be slightly less, but you cannot have your cake and eat it. That is exactly why Bitcoin was designed to exchange Empathy for Immutable Truth.

  • @__lancaster

Parker speaks like a man heavily invested in a solution that Nostr threatens. Nostr is an excellent protocol to rebuild youtube, twiiter and instagram from the ground up to incorporate the internets native currency of Bitcoin. Parker has a very poor understanding of the intersection of AI and social media - it becomes critical within the next decade to shift all humans to cryptographic signatures across all digital activities.
