My Dad said so many times when I was a kid "did you know Cream only had three band members?" that it's become a standard joke in my family -- whenever anyone says something that they've said a million times before, we respond "did you know Cream only had three band members?" Listening to it all these years later and I'm still astonished at how full and complex a musical texture they created with only three of them, though!
RIP the two members of Cream Ginger Baker (August 19, 1939 - October 6, 2019), aged 80 Jack Bruce (May 14, 1943 - October 25, 2014), aged 71 You both will be remembered as legends.
Not as old as the late great Jack Bruce but i share the same 14th of May birthday and i'm Scottish you just taught me everyday is a school day by me learning this cheers pal.
It means you're not a pussy, and it looks fucking cool. Or would you replace "sex, drugs, and rock n' roll" with like "yoga, organic food, and non-threatening music".
+Brunii! +Max Johnson Neither the White Stripes nor the Black Keys had bass. They were minimalist and stripped down with very high gain (so definitely not raw and pure). This song demonstrates how essential Jack Bruce was. And how much bass affects the feel and emotional impact of a song. I love White Stripes songs but they don’t make your bones and soul vibrate the way only a bass and drum synergy can.
Probably only John Bonham and Neil Peart ahead of Ginger, I have been a drummer for 45 years and I love listening to all 3 plus Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Stewart Copeland and some others that are great
Exactly! Gingers' old Ludwig kit, Leedy snare and old Zildjians sound 10X better than the DW kit he uses these days. Notice the old dirty Remo heads on his kit, here. I still think Eric sounded better when he was playing Gibsons too. I also think Jack started playing a fretless bass right after this period. Notice you really don't see any effects on the floor. Maybe a Vox cry-baby or a fuzz box...but that was about it. Just PURE sound! You had to have TALENT back then.
Such an epic song. I can hear my kid singing at the top of her lungs in the shower. She's 14 and loves my albums. I'm totally gushing with mom love and pride. She loves my music and she shows me the new stuff. Cream is one of her favorites.
I'm 16 years old, and I found this on my own. My father likes Rock/Metal from the 70's and 80's, but I wanted to learn more about the early/pre Metal bands. He knows some of them thought, he knows a lot since he started playing something called "SongPop".
Seems clear the camera monkey was mainly there for love of the hat. He certainly had no interest in or appreciation for what was happening on Clapton's guitar. He accidentally got a few seconds in focus in the background as the solo closed its tired eyes. Too bad.
Ginger Baker : One of the Best Drummer Ever Eric Clapton : One of the Best Guitarist Ever Jack Bruce : One of the Best Bassist Ever What do you want more ?
It NEVER got better than this. This was the apex of hard rock. NEVER to be equaled. Pound for pound the GREATEST group. That is why they were called the CREAM.
I remember buying my first Cream album when I was 13 at a used record store in the late 1960s. I played it so much, these three had such a unbelievable vibe when they were at their best! Miss all the bands from that era, will never be repeated.
I never, ever get tired of watching this. Ginger is baked out of his mind but plays with perfect time, Clapton hits the riffs with precision and passion, and Jack nails the bass notes and vocals like the master that he was.
when someone says "Cream" this is my instant thought- Jack and THAT bass line!! despite his tempestuous relationship with Ginger and not so much Clapton, but despite all this, his legacy will always overshadow the well established flaws. He and the band were genre defining and will never be forgotten RIP
Dead Zombie Bonzo was more technically proficient and more dazzingly, for sure. But both put their souls into their performances and were respected for their personal styles. I think Baker's steady backbeat was well suited his fellow band members' cadence and personae.
Hearing the loss of Ginger Baker made the whole community of Rock & Roll stood still. I listened to the people for their opinions of the man himself and he was one of the top drummers of Rock and Roll. Thank You Ginger Baker for your work of art and keep rocking with the other rock stars up in heaven. ✌🏽
Immense! Jack Bruce was awesome, a master bassist and good vocalist. Ginger Baker was a monster, a phenominal drummer. Eric Clapton was at his peak and a superb guitarist then.
I’ve always held that heavy metal, distilled to its absolute most basic elements, is just blues played super loud and down tuned. Every time I go on a long flight, I’ll have all these songs and bands I listen to, and always, without fail, I end up coming back to these psychedelic legends they’re just so important to all modern music that I’ll be listening to something that came out last year and go, “hey, that sounds like cream”. All these guys that came out of the psychedelic rock scene and who would form the basis for all heavy metal, Cream, Hendricks, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and deep purple. They’re all just blues turned up to 11 and can’t get enough of it.
Rock took a great sharp turn as a result of Jack's innovation and energy. One of the most memorable days of my life was seeing Cream at the Community Concourse in San Diego California. Rest in Peace old friend.
My dad saw Cream in Detroit at Grande Ball Room, he would always say it was one of the loudest shows he had ever heard, especially how high the bass was cranked. The grande ballroom still stands as a derelict building, empty since 1972 but housed all the great bands of that time.
My brother in law saw them live and said the same "the thing i remember the most was how loud they were". Ginger Baker said years later " it ruined my hearing". Primal drumming by him, later he lived in Africa for a while to study their technique.
Those amps that sound better then any massed produced amp built today. And that's the gospel truth. This is the sound and equipment I have been searching for.
Inspired van halen but I just dont see it. Bruce and Baker solid Eric to me not so much and a couple flubbed notes. I'll take from that genre may page and beck. Basic blues licks to me but I know the dudes a legend. Did see him RIP a little during live aid but that's the only time
Sunshine of your love!!!!! A song that changed every thing in the music world!!! There had never been anything like it on top forty radio before. It changed the way we listened, the way we played guitar, bass, and drums!!!!! The song never grows old, or sounds dated. As a kid trying to learn guitar, I hung on to every bar, and could not get enough of this song. It was a shot heard around the world. This video might not be great, but it captures the essence of the band, in a way a polished modern video can not. To all of us guitar and bass players, Clapton and Bruce were the guys we wanted to be. They set the bar. I would have liked to see Cream make one more album, but with Jack gone, that can't be done. Jack Bruce will be missed, but never forgotten. If you want to hear the influence of Cream, Listen to "girls weren't design to pump iron". A song I wrote and preform on U. tube I have 14 songs I wrote on there. Peace and love, Gary.
barry mitchell Dear Barry, even if it's just a rehearsal caught on film, It's a nice piece of history. I like seeing the band as they were, not a highly polished P.R. shot. I think Eric looks really cool with the long hair and all. Those were the days!!!!!
this is really a great video because it focuses in on GINGER BAKERS playing style more than any of even his drum clinic videos or the TALKING HEADS that propose his style, gives you a RARE look behind the set.the DRUMMER that stayed away from the SNARE drum and why he is GREAT,he made his own TIME signatures and all without a snare beat to draw off of,yes,he's really, really good.
What a great tune, love it. I’m new into my guitar journey and my teacher just last week taught me this song. I will never ever be mistaken for Clapton that’s for sure. But playing it, rather poorly I must add, let’s me DREAM that MAYBE JUST MAYBE I could…………who knows. Thanks for this great post. Cheers
I can't even imagine how cool it sounds with the powerful acoustic system. 1966-67, are you seriously? It's amazing)! It's the best live I've everer seen. How can they hate each other? They are doing their best.
My Dad said so many times when I was a kid "did you know Cream only had three band members?" that it's become a standard joke in my family -- whenever anyone says something that they've said a million times before, we respond "did you know Cream only had three band members?" Haha! It's always fun to read about people's life stories that are somehow connected to music. Good one!
That's hilarious mate. God bless you and your family
P
I don’t get it
Do you need to listen MUSE hehe
RIP the two members of Cream
Ginger Baker (August 19, 1939 - October 6, 2019), aged 80
Jack Bruce (May 14, 1943 - October 25, 2014), aged 71
You both will be remembered as legends.
Not as old as the late great Jack Bruce but i share the same 14th of May birthday and i'm Scottish you just taught me everyday is a school day by me learning this cheers pal.
100%
The fact that they both passed in October 😢
One of the greatest power trios of all time. RIP Jack and Ginger
Visceral, raw and genius. Please, bring back the 60’s.
Jack Bruce is so badass, even his bass guitar smokes a cigarette.
It is so that in between songs, he can take a couple puffs.
Thank you for the vivid explanation, Sir!
+The Rockaholich Well, yeah
What is so badass about smoking cigarettes?
It means you're not a pussy, and it looks fucking cool. Or would you replace "sex, drugs, and rock n' roll" with like "yoga, organic food, and non-threatening music".
Every garage band ever since has wished they could sound this good and still be so raw and pure.
The Black Keys (early days) and some of their new stuff
+Max Johnson do not involve that shitty band into this, please.
The White Stripes maybe
Hedek Bass "very high gain"?! You must be deaf, they either play low gain or fuzzed out, nothing "high gain" about that
I think Ginger Barker’s drumming holds them together. He’s one of the greatest rock drummers of all time.
@MyMediaArchive Well said , he was a Superstar Drummer.
Yep, the other two guys don't have a clue....
Probably only John Bonham and Neil Peart ahead of Ginger, I have been a drummer for 45 years and I love listening to all 3 plus Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Stewart Copeland and some others that are great
This monster riff is as legendary as Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.”
Probably their best; my fave, anyway.😎✌🏽☮️🎸
Sunshine of you love riff has got more notes AND vibrato. Jack Bruce wrote it after seeing Hendrix in concert. No comparison. lol.
@Old Crow Jack Bruce wrote most of the music, Clapton only wrote the chorus part/turnaround.
Very cool
@Old Crow My bad, I was referring to Sunshine Of Your Love. You're spot on about Strange Brew though.
Props to the camera man for letting us see exactly how Clapton plays the solo! Good work!
Yea forget about his hands, those expressions Clapton did were pretty slick. thanks camera man.
Lol learn it by listening bruh, you ain’t a real musician if you can’t figure out those notes...
jukeboxkid Who even said anything about being a musician?, or maybe I wanted to see his fingering technique, vaffanculo!
yeah i guess he figured it's just a guitar solo, don't need to see that ...
Eh. Clapton was always the least interesting part of Cream.
The best version of this song and can’t find it anywhere other than RUclips , been rocking this video for over 10 years
It is available as a special feature of documentary which I own a copy of.
It's on Beware of Mr Baker
Reminds me of high school dances.❤😊
It's a remarkable recording - just the 3 boys, filmed up close rehearsing in an empty room... makes it very intimate
Spotify
I am sixty years old and this makes me feel 20. I really FEEL IT
That drum rhythm/pattern is so iconic...
Recorded more than 45 years ago with ancient technology and no gimmicks....kicks more ass than any ten bands today...
Yeah. That's right
You should give king gizzard and the lizard wizard a listen.
Ok I will. We all should do that
Don't need a drum machine if you can drum like that ?
Ginger Baker looks completely insane. And yet never once does he lose the groove.
I’m 24 years young and I swear an oath to keep this music alive.
Good on you kid.
The late great Jack Bruce. He is a one-off. Sadly , there will never be another musician like him. 💖
Hello Marcia, how are you?
Such an epic song. I can hear my kid singing at the top of her lungs in the shower. She's 14 and loves my albums. I'm totally gushing with mom love and pride. She loves my music and she shows me the new stuff. Cream is one of her favorites.
Same with my kids lenora!! 2 boys who always ask for dads music. Thank god non of this new shite has tainted them haha xx
+Elk Lord holy shit 😂😂
+Lenora Scyphers Right there with you. I have a 14 year old son and he grew up on this stuff. Loves the" REAL "music..
I'm 16 years old, and I found this on my own. My father likes Rock/Metal from the 70's and 80's, but I wanted to learn more about the early/pre Metal bands. He knows some of them thought, he knows a lot since he started playing something called "SongPop".
+Lenora Scyp that must be very rewarding ,my 6 year old loves this too !
Nothing like looking at Eric Clapton's mustache and a blurry Ginger Baker during a phenomenal guitar solo
Seems clear the camera monkey was mainly there for love of the hat. He certainly had no interest in or appreciation for what was happening on Clapton's guitar. He accidentally got a few seconds in focus in the background as the solo closed its tired eyes. Too bad.
Clapton was very protective of his fingering technique. not alot of video of his hands in this era
No one was allowed to see Slowhand's fingers during Cream era
ItsTheDark
Yeah but we were allowed to see his hands during his mediocre aor soft rock era
Whats wrong with rock history man
LMAO right??!!
Ginger, I hope you and Jack are jamming up there in heaven
Hopefully not at each others throats especially.
R.I.P Bruce and Baker
Yeah, he is jamming Bruce's head between a wall & his foot.
Liberio Escriba hahahahahahahahahahaha. That was good
I love both of them but yeah, they wouldn’t be jamming. By now they’ve probably killed each other up in heaven.
They HATED eachother
Three extraordinary musicians.
Three extraordinary characters.
One extraordinary band.
Ginger Baker : One of the Best Drummer Ever
Eric Clapton : One of the Best Guitarist Ever
Jack Bruce : One of the Best Bassist Ever
What do you want more ?
You forgot Jack Bruce: One of the Best Bassist & Vocalist Ever
+TheBourbonDuke Its crazy everytime I hear the beginning of this song I can still picture Deniro squinting his eye puffing on that cigarette
Ludwik I have to correct you ,all three are in fact the best ever. Bar none.
That's why it's a supergroup isn't it ?
wrong, best guitaris of the world is -
slash
van halen
randy rhodes
richie blackmore
jimmy page
jimi hendrix
brian may
eric clapton
and manymore
It doesn't get any better! This takes me back to seeing Cream at the Oakdale Theater circa 1968. The tickets were $3 each!!!
One of the best rock songs ever written and performed
rock on Ginger. You made it all the way to 80! My youth was altered by your incredible drumming Save me a dance in heaven or where ever in the cosmos
This is probably where the term "power trio" comes from.
You could also check out Blue Cheer. Summertime Blues.
Randy Holden wasn't low rent
The first power trio was "Taste" with Rory Gallager in '65.
Yeah, probably. :)
everyone of them plays solo at the same time
One of the best songs in the history.
What good fortune it must have been to be witness to such incredible talent and energy. Not much comes close today.
Clapton was on fire in this performance
You don't realize how wicked Jack Bruce was on bass until you hear/see him play live like this.
It NEVER got better than this. This was the apex of hard rock. NEVER to be equaled. Pound for pound the GREATEST group. That is why they were called the CREAM.
AMEN!
I remember buying my first Cream album when I was 13 at a used record store in the late 1960s. I played it so much, these three had such a unbelievable vibe when they were at their best! Miss all the bands from that era, will never be repeated.
Eric Clapton's tone in this recording and in Spoonfull is incredible, so powerful, so raw... oh my god
Much better live version than final concert footage from Royal Albert Hall. Jack's voice was so soulful/bluesy, he is sorely missed.
Back when bass guitars smoke cigarettes
I never, ever get tired of watching this. Ginger is baked out of his mind but plays with perfect time, Clapton hits the riffs with precision and passion, and Jack nails the bass notes and vocals like the master that he was.
Yep
Ginger baker being baked out? Nice
Ginger baker r.i.p. one of the greatest drummer,s to grace our time in rock.
when someone says "Cream" this is my instant thought- Jack and THAT bass line!! despite his tempestuous relationship with Ginger and not so much Clapton, but despite all this, his legacy will always overshadow the well established flaws. He and the band were genre defining and will never be forgotten RIP
Well said. Brilliant Bassist and Songwriter.
M Wayne yeah man, this year has been rough.. Tommy Ramone, Bob Brozman etc etc but as a casual bassist, this one really sucks
OMG...I can die a happy woman now that I've found this film!
Hello Debbie, how are you?
Just watching this gives me chills. Ginger Baker is and will always be the best drummer in history.
One of the greatest songs ever in my book
the best riff ever, performed by amazing musicians
average riff at best
Kevin Hall happy to hear if you can exceed this
Kevin Hall
yeah ,we all know you make better riffs ,thats why none of us has ever heard of you
Kevin Hall Kevin, The village just called and they want you back!
Kevin Hall ignorant
this deserves to have 10 billion likes
Rest In Peace Ginger.
One Of The Best Drummers That Have Lived.
A time when songs live we’re better than they were recorded
Extended jam sessions and ad libs were common back then. Live improvisation made songs very interesting.
LOL. With that SG and the mustache, Eric Clapton looks like Tony Iommi!
Iommi is come after Clapton so it's Iommi who looks like Clapton
+KeithThe Stones Only a 2 year age difference but yes.
and it Tony not Tommy.
And to be honest NIB and this have a fairly similar riff LOL
Really!! I thought that was actually Tony iomi
Not a wasted lick or drum stroke.
+Evan Thompson I think John Bonham was much better than that guy.
Dead Zombie Bonzo was more technically proficient and more dazzingly, for sure. But both put their souls into their performances and were respected for their personal styles. I think Baker's steady backbeat was well suited his fellow band members' cadence and personae.
***** For sure! He was working all the time, regardless of the offering.
+Dead Zombie Didn't Bonzo consider Baker one of his muses?
Jody Lee He did. During Bonzo's rise, there were few who came close to Baker and Keith Moon, in his eyes.
I love Jack’s hat. He looks cool. He is “the best bassist that’s ever been “ (Roger Waters) I love 💗 Cream!
Absolutely fantastic! Ginger Baker is the best "Rock" Drummer I´ve ever heard. And I listen to a lot of music.
Eric will live on till he is 91...he is a survivor!
Everything about this video is cool. Music, musicianship, instruments, red walls, atmosphere, etc...you name it. Real music and real sound. Wow.
Blame it on the Marshall stacks (Ginger did).
Immense!
Jack Bruce was awesome, a master bassist and good vocalist.
Ginger Baker was a monster, a phenominal drummer.
Eric Clapton was at his peak and a superb guitarist then.
Happy Birthday , Eric! Glad you made it to 71.
are you.....are you REALLY?
In Your Face, Guitar ! Thankfully Mr. Slowhand didn't die from drugs like many psychedelic musicians.
76
Always Remember The Cream Always Rises too the top!!!! RIP Mr. Jack Bruce!!
Just Eric is left.....still rockin!!!
Top 5 guitar player
Top 5 bass player
Top 5 drummer
God allowed them to play for only 2 years for the sake of the entire universe.
They’re all just blues turned up to 11 and can’t get enough of it.
When Clapton is playing a solo I kinda want to see it
Cyclone Jim - Jack Bruce’s wife was filming this.
From what I hear, Clapton didn't want people filming his techniques.
I love this version of Sunshine of your Love. It's better than the Studio tract in my opinion. 👍
Best drummer, best guitarist, best bass, filmed with one camera (perfect by the way)... a masterpiece
This iZ one of my favorite videos of Cream performing this track! I love how the camera settled on Mr. Bruce'Z bass playing for a while! 🎸
Rock took a great sharp turn as a result of Jack's innovation and energy. One of the most memorable days of my life was seeing Cream at the Community Concourse in San Diego California. Rest in Peace old friend.
CREAM el trio más virtuoso y demoledor en la historia del rock. Con su poesía pesadamente amplificada, CREAM estará presente hasta el final...
A rift that is timeless!
incredible band- 3 people ...unbelievable back then....and now. loved them in 67 and now~
That kids is how it's done. Three piece blues rock originality live and amazing. No entourage, dancers, or auto tune just talent!
Those days...are sadly long gone. Now it's all about how you look and dance.
My dad saw Cream in Detroit at Grande Ball Room, he would always say it was one of the loudest shows he had ever heard, especially how high the bass was cranked. The grande ballroom still stands as a derelict building, empty since 1972 but housed all the great bands of that time.

I had this single 45 as a kid, not even a teenager yet. Can still see it. Timeless music.
Those amps that sound better then any massed produced amp built today. And that's the gospel truth. This is the sound and equipment I have been searching for.
Clear and smooth
This is so good, best version I've come across. Be great if someone could clean up the audio
How it is done my children.
+eastlake93 lmfao!!!
David Crosby wore a hat like that at about the same time. Check out Mr. Clapton's hi-rise mocs.
Yes,god,yes
No fancy tricks like today, just raw talent seldom seen today. Wow what a power house of a band.
ive been listening to cream since i was 4 days old... im 84 now. Best music of all time!!!!!
Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and see them perform.
Amen!
He was a genius
it is pure pleasure to listen to his playing
RIP Ginger
These guys are JAMMIN, even 50 Years Later it come through the film.
The funny thing is that when you watch and listen to this, Eric Clapton is the third most talented person.
Exactly!
Inspired van halen but I just dont see it. Bruce and Baker solid Eric to me not so much and a couple flubbed notes. I'll take from that genre may page and beck. Basic blues licks to me but I know the dudes a legend. Did see him RIP a little during live aid but that's the only time
RIP, Jack Bruce
indeed...
Rip
RIP GINGER BAKER DIED October 6th 2019
@@prodige2211 RIP ...Amazing conicidence. Yesterday I've played "Sunhine ...", jaming this over one hour ...
As of today, Eric is the only one left. We just lost Ginger today.
I'm a teenager all over again listening to this song! 😊
That guitar solo 😎👌
The best band ever - of course, they were the best musicians!
So much talent in the ‘70’s - what has happened?
...crazy and unfrkn believable...love this...every time. you will not get this out of your head for a while!!!
anchorsteam ive repeated this about 10× now lol

I think that this video is somewhat before they started gigging,
barry mitchell

I love the vintage sound of this recording
What a great tune, love it. I’m new into my guitar journey and my teacher just last week taught me this song. I will never ever be mistaken for Clapton that’s for sure. But playing it, rather poorly I must add, let’s me DREAM that MAYBE JUST MAYBE I could…………who knows.
Thanks for this great post.
Cheers
Iconic riffs. Wonder if ACDC was somehow influenced by this tune.
First time seeing this bit of film. WOW!!!!!!!
R.I.P. Jack Bruce . You were great, man.
I want the Bruce's hat.
Best live cream performance ive yet to see
The good old days . Everyone is getting high . Eternal classics
Man this song.. the lyrics and you know... This Ginger D-God Baker is just... I fucking love this
Jim moorison has been revived
Jim you chking in from Paris ???? :)
I love you jim
How's Pam doing?
I like this version than the original recording.
+Ryan Ascencio it sounds slowed down
+james marshall and heavier!
+Stay Higher Yes!
cream was a trio- and were CREAM***********
It is also a half step down. Sounds way better!!
I can't even imagine how cool it sounds with the powerful acoustic system.
1966-67, are you seriously? It's amazing)!
It's the best live I've everer seen.
How can they hate each other? They are doing their best.
People forget what a world class vocalist Jack Bruce was...what a voice!
If ginger wasn't such a bad ass id say look at the zombie on drums but ginger is bad ass
Cos coke :)
Don t be fooled. That coke was high on ginger.
potatomato :p ... Heroin.
KKDKDKDKDKSISSUS
Sure but the name Ginger sucks for a man. Hi Ginger OMG!!!
Abe Lincoln on the drums lol.
The savior, Ginger Baker.
hahaha
Mark Robinson Hey Mark. I'm fully aware of who Ginger Baker is. Learn to take a joke fucktard.
Randy Wilson Randy. Its a fucking joke you moron. I know who Baker is. I'm a fan of Cream.
So you've been told.
Ginger's drumming is just so good, solid and steady, perfectly tuned drums.
Baker, Bruce, and Clapton: Three ingredients for sending shockwaves throughout one's spine!
Gingers drumming is so damn primal! Love it.
