Comments + Lyrics Why does the most enigmatic female vocalists of the 80’s and 90’s sing in an indecipherable language? She suffers from Psychogenic-dysphonia, a condition responsive to the brain, for, different ways to "protect" and "defend" itself against -- Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA), resulting from repeated traumas'. In Elizabeth's case, her disorder affected her ability to enunciate words when she sings. Elizabeth has affectionately referred to this, as her “descriptive disorder”. Suffice it to say, in simplistic terminology, the act of talking and singing are, not, the same function, both activities involve neuro-muscular activity in controlling the vocal-cords, which affects either speaking or singing, because each center is separately located in different regions of the brain. Elizabeth's personal story is one of enormous triumphs and unimaginable pain. Whenever, I read particular comments, like "She's not singing, she's making pleasant sounds"; "Elizabeth Fraser and Lisa Gerrard are the same”, and “She’s speaking 'Glossolalia' or in 'tongues' " -- that's just plain outright stupid. Both genres “Dream-pop” and “Shoegaze” were derived, as a direct result, from the Cocteau Twins music. No matter what the naysayers do, there is only one truth and “Nobody can change history”. Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie, and Simon Raymonde blazed entirely new trails; now, countless others are following in step, because of their "True Genius". Yet, all three members are way too humble and shy to ever admit such a thing. Elizabeth has earned her Royal Title as "The Voice of God" from her piers, as well as, her dedicated adoring fans. How many people do you know, who has truly turned a complete disadvantage, like hers, into work -- most people, still can't believe at how something, so, angelic, alive, and otherworldly, could come from one woman. No one, has ever been able to replicate her ability, so, please sing your own words. Her lyrics are written down in separate different "codex", locked away only for her. It’s taken a while, but “we” avid fans have slowly turned the tide, against those who say, "Elizabeth has no lyrics". As apart of a group of dedicated superfans, we realized, that it was much more about “how” she sings, rather than “what” she sings. Keep in mind, Elizabeth's key elements are: They're usually one syllable words; She uses a lot of contractions, which most record labels hate, but, in this case, we are talking about Elizabeth here; and, She’ll take multi-syllable words and perform, what I like to call, “vocal origami” by compacting words. What, I'm gifting you "with" is something, I've very rarely done. I think it's worth mentioning, it was Ivo Watts-Russell from the 4AD Record Label, who forced Elizabeth, as well as, Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance to wear those stupid white gowns on stage and insisted on the tortured hairstyles. Back to my main point -- I've only given the lyrics to only one other Cocteau Twins songs. * If you're a "hopeless romantic", believing this song is about "Undying Love" then, I wouldn't read these lyrics. I say this because, even though Elizabeth and Robin were at one time married, they produced a beautiful baby girl, "Lucy Bell Guthrie" (who also sings, but people want her to be a copy of her mother); however, between them both there was so much turmoil and frustration. Most people forget, when the two met in Grangemouth, Scotland when they were only teenagers. Robin had not yet completely "Sewn his Wild-Oats" if you know what I mean. There's a lifetime of history between them both, but often it was poor Simon, who became their go-between. What's truly sad is, if you watch the video, she's so broken-hearted and singing this incredibly iconic song, right in front of the inconsiderate dumbass, himself. Robin's unfaithfulness to Elizabeth is a common theme, so much so, I've had to "unlearn" the lyrics, in order to enjoy different songs again. Like, if you watch the, "Official" Heaven or Las Vegas video, there are four key phrases taken out. These are lyrics, when they were happy together in Las Vegas and had essentially written the entire Victorialand album, while strung-out on drugs. It's common knowledge and they admit it to others in numerous magazine articles, at that time. However, Elizabeth demanded those particular lines be removed, while making the video. Many songs she wrote are about Robin and his escapades, behind her back. Why? No one knows except for him? Although, I do know Elizabeth always gets the last word. So many people around world, would love to see them do another concert, but the sad fact is that, she is still quite bitter and angry at Robin. There was another album planned after the Milk & Kisses album tour. Elizabeth and Simon apparently showed up at their studio to begin recording, with lyrics in hand; but, unfortunately Robin’s addiction to drugs and alcohol, left everyone miffed and Elizabeth said, “I don’t need to take this shit from him” and left the studio, so, Elizabeth won’t go around Robin. The promoter of the famed, Coachella Valley Music Festival booked the Cocteau Twins for April 30, 2005 by offered them, an unheard amount of money -- a cool, $1 million to each member, just to do one set -- for which, I bought the tickets and made travel plans -- but, it was not meant to be, as to everyone's surprise, Elizabeth cancelled on March 16, 2005. So, gentlemen -- the lesson here, is, be faithful... !!!
@@spinglasshydra Thank you for all of the incredible details. I was not aware of the incredible story behind the lyrics and her trials and tribulations with the band. I was unaware of the drug issues although I was very aware of the conflicts with Ivo and 4AD, which is of course why they left and went to Capitol records. I have often thought the key to Elizabeth's vocals was her particular turn on a melody and specific way she enunciates her words and the choice of lyrics. For those who think her vocals are always buried and hard to discern you only need to listen to the brilliant performance she delivers on the amazing track Teardrop from Massive Attack. There is a clear reason why she has been a force to reckon with and has an immeasurable talent.
@@paulhaggard8716 I completely agree. After 39+ years of Cocteau Twin love, I've become, somewhat of a historian on the subject of them as a band. There are many songs where anyone may hear her vocals really clearly. "Teardrop" on Massive Attacks, Mezzanine album is a fantastic song; but, she wrote that song, the same day after finding out that Jeff Buckley had died by drowning and it took four days to find his body. The two had, had a long time secret relationship and when the song "All Flowers Bend in Time Towards the Sun" was leaked out by someone, she was heartbroken and said, "But, It wasn't finished, yet". Diehard fans believe she never wanted the song released, because she wanted to keep something of him, to herself. It's so sad, but true. So many people are screaming for the immortal Cocteau Twins, to do another album and concert tour; but, Elizabeth can be unpredictable. Have you heard at how many "Dream-pop" and "Shoegaze" bands there are, just here on RUclips. There are to many to count, thanks to these three. They use to have tribute CD's for bands to do Cocteau Twins covers. I'd love them to do another, but getting 4AD to comply, has always been a problem. I'd be more than willing to include, your remix here, on that short-list of options. We'll have to wait and see?
@@paulhaggard8716 Sorry Paul, but do you know of "Junction Chapman" got in trouble with the Record Label's, regarding there Cocteau Twins songs here on RUclips. They just disappeared one day? I had to backup all my writing, it, was so strange?
@@spinglasshydra I am not familiar with that name.
I am not sure about troubles here on RUclips with posting songs, other than they will do a copyright claim automatically if they detect the song and the artist on upload, which means any ad money goes to the artist. I have no problem with that and it seems fair. If people are getting in trouble for other reasons or pulled from RUclips I am not sure why.

Is this the psychedelic furs mixed in all that money wants
Yes it is... very perceptive of you. The Furs song was the idea for doing the remix as I listened to it one day and realized the opening guitar chords are the same as Love's Easy Tears in another key.
Interesting it's a good mix, it's faint if you don't know it you're listening for but I picked up on a pretty quick, people would have been dancing to that in one of those dark clubs in '86 I would have
@@chuffa1130 Many thanks. Making it faint was my intention. My goal was to make a "white label" mix like the bootlegs you use to find in the import section of the record store back in the day....
After a while found u were taking over her voice this is not a good .
Blasphemy! How dare you .! !?? Disco? Wtf ?
My apologies if it is not to your liking. Ironically no disco was used to make this track (and I know disco). I was going for an uptempo white label remix version of the original...
@@paulhaggard8716 I'm glad you dared. What a joy to listen and dance to.
@@paulhaggard8716 Adding 4 on the floor drums doesn't constitute a "remix".
There is more going on than just a back beat, but my apologies if it is not your thing.
@@paulhaggard8716 Yes, I know but I have difficulties hearing it as I never use head phones or anything more sensitive than iMac speakers...but it is there.
Meh.... Just leave shit alone already.
This wasn't how it was originally meant to be. It's hard to improve on perfection. This and the complete slowing down of already ambient classics is uncalled for. Not needed. Just make your own song and slow it down yourself... Please 🙏
It's not to everyone's liking and I get that. Remixing is about doing an updated arrangement of something. Some people will want to hear this as the ambient original and not try and bring it to the dance floor...
@@paulhaggard8716 There are always those who will be "purists" at heart regarding our beloved Cocteaux. You can't please everyone, but if I heard this in a club, then hell ya..... I'd be out there giving it my all... !!!
