Yes, it would be absolutely neat to see this in real life. But sadly, it'll never happen. Every single New York Central 4-6-4 Hudson was scrapped after they were retired, despite being some of THE most iconic steam locomotives in American Railroad history, period. The reason why all of the NYC Hudsons were scrapped is because New York Central was in a very bad financial situation in the 1950's (in fact, a lot of railroads in general were struggling badly at that time) and wasn't making much money. This led to New York Central's leader, the legendary Alfred Perlman, to make the decision to scrap all of the Hudsons (as well as all of NYC's 4-8-4 Niagaras), and use the money gained from scrapping them (the scrap value, in other words) to fund the company's operations. It did, indeed, work very well, as New York Central was able to stay afloat into the mid to late 1960's. Had New York Central been in a much better financial situation, it's very likely that one or a few of the Hudsons would've been preserved. Luckily, not all of New York Central's large steam locomotives completely disappeared, as two of their 4-8-2 Mohawks (L-2d #2933, and L-3a #3001) have been preserved, and are on display.
It is a shame. If any NYC Hudson were to be preserved, its got to be J1e Hudson no. 5344. It's the most famous of all the NYC Hudsons, as it is known for being the basis for Lionel's 1st full scale model train in 1934. It is also famous for wearing the Commodore Vanderbilt Streamline Shrouding. There is a Museum that has 5344's headlight, though I don't remember which Museum it is.
Some interesting things regarding NYC Mohawks. One is in the Railroad Museum in St.Louis while the other was in the NYC Museum in Indiana. For a while one of them was cosmetically modified to resemble a T&P Mountain for static display at the Age of Steam Museum in Dallas. They eventually swapped it for a GG1 and DD40AX"Centennial". Interesting thing about the T&P steamers. They donated a pair of their famous 2-10-4's to both Dallas and Fort Worth. The one given to Dallas was vandalized to the point that it had to be scrapped. In 1976,T&P 610 was restored to running condition and pulled the Freedom Train across much of Texas. It was then loaned to the Southern Railway for excursion service and now is on the property of the Texas State Railroad In East Texas. Another T&P steamer is sometimes used on the TSRR between Palestine and Rusk. Also,in 1958,the T&P bought a Mikado from the FW&D to use in switching service because the Red River floods shorted out the diesels. In 1962,they donated it to the city of Marshall where last I heard it was being cosmetically restored.
Oh yeah, this was a great video! Probably one of the best Gustav vids I’ve seen. I can’t wait to see it put back to its glory days condition! The Hudsons, every single one, on the NYC got scrapped because Perlman scrapped them all due to the financial situation. He definitely cared about the railroads and wanted them to survive, heck maybe there would have been a chance to save at least Hudson and one Niagara at least, but idk. I can imagine that part of him might have had a soft spot for the Hudsons and Niagaras and didn’t want to scrap all of them, but his primary focus was to keep the railroad afloat. And I think the New York Central would have been better off alone or the Penn Central board and staff listened to Perlman and took his advice. Though we should appreciate what had been there and appreciate the past and what railroad men have done for us. But I sure am glad that Hudson got rescued in an alternate reality of Earth even if it’s fictional. It would have been so cool to find a NYC J3a or J2 Hudson sitting around somewhere in some isolated location! 😊😃🛤️🚂
You know, if any NYC Hudson were to be chosen for preservation, it would J1e Hudson no. 5344, its the most famous of all the NYC Hudsons, as it is known for being the basis for Lionel's very 1st full scale model train in 1934, It is also famous for wearing the Commodore Vanderbilt Streamline Shrouding.
It could be factual, if they can build a PRR duplex from nothing, I'm sure they can do it. Just take one of the preserved CB&Q Hudson's, and streamline it.
When restored. Number it to no 5344, as in real life in the steam era, 5344 was the most famous NYC Hudson, as its known for being the basis for Lionel's 1st full scale model train in 1934, and is also famous for wearing the commodore Vanderbilt Streamline Shrouding
The Hudson finally gets taken out of the mud. CSX sends out their SD40-3 #4006 to help in recovering the last NYC Hudson. Gustavtime has successfully saved a streamlined NYC Hudson from mud and he has plans to perform operational restoration and repairs and a repaint. NYC Hudson is getting a second chance at life thanks to Gustavtime Corporation.
I would like the new build NYC Niagara, but I decide to let the Hudson go first even though I have to wait 15 years for Hudson + 15 for Niagara equaling 30 years (unless if there were the new shops the new build extinct locomotives to be built sooner just like the Silvis shops in Illinois).
Wouldnt that have been a reality or we gone back in time and saved one from Alfred Perlman from the New York Central. However i hope oneday someone has ghe intentions to build a new numbered one or a replica i hope it happens someday.
i ;ove the creaking sounds of the flat beds from the weight of the loco and it only just fit under those power lines for the electric trains not much clearance left thank you video was awesome where do you get the rusty old locos from
First of, great Vid! But I have one question. Where do u get US rolling stock with propper sound, like squeaking brakes or at least rolling sounds from the wheels? Greetings from Germany. :)

Still That Devil In Disguise Made The Stupid Excuse That Preserving Steamers Would Ruin NYC's Image.
It’s a shame. Hopefully someone builds a replica or two of a Hudson.

There is a aux tender of one of the unstreamlined Hudson’s at steamtown
@Strasburg_Railfaner611 yes, the tender is from J1e Hudson no. 5313
My God, I thought that was for real!
Looks like my old Rivarossi 4-6-4 Hudson!
Don't we all wish a Hudson would return.
I have one.
There have been replica attempts, but nobody has been successful
Beautiful… We need more people like this in the world..
Been watching your videos for quite a while. You never fail to impress. As a fellow RUclipsr and train enthusiast, keep them trains rolling 👊
Thanks you!
OMG, it's actually going to be saved! And I like how CSX was helping out!

I thought from the thumbnail that this was real. My mistake.
Glad I wasn't the only one
If only it was.
For a split second, I almost leaped out of my seat.
I guess Alfred E. Perlman didn't want to get his chainsaw dirty with this one.

*Alfred E Perlman rises from the grave with cutters torch in hand*
Oh how i wish this was real... 😢 rip all the hudsons..
Also nice video Gustav! Keep up the restorations!

Just take one of the preserved CB&Q Hudson's, and streamline it.
Or steal parts from random locomotives and melt down said locomotive parts into entirely new parts
God Damn you had me for a second
If a Hudson like that still exists it would be a miracle
One doesn’t :(

Cool! Can’t wait to see it being restored!
The transportation of that locomotive would never fly in the real world in that matter, though that’s pretty obvious, Roll On!

I'm happy that train is being rescued
YAY THIS IS AWESOME I can't wait to see the restoration!
Actually, it will appear. A company bought one and repaired it so in the future, it will appear someday
Good Job.
Well I look forward to seeing it running again. Hopefully it won’t cost too much money to restore. Looks like quite a rescue operation.

The only probelm is they'd NEVER allow you to stop on the main line and load something like that! You'd have to truck it to the nearest siding.
Idea for next abandoned locomotive a sister engine of SP 4449
hold on j3a Hudson help is coming
It's terrible we never got to see a Hudson or Niagara preserved. What a shame.
I never got to ever see one of these I was born in the time of diesels..
