      Russ Gallagher I would sort of prefer ‘someone’, as in it is ‘neat’ to watch anyone realise their dream, the general statement is quite correct.

    Beautiful, looks exactly like the later griffon powered spitfires! Great craftsmanship! Without a doubt, that is the best 2/3 scale spitfire I've ever seen! With the four blade prop and the large spinner it looks like a later model of the spitfire with the RR Griffon engine and the buldges above the exhaust stacks. Great plane!

    An absolutely fantastic achievement!!
    I may be wrong, but it looks like someone decided to make a very sensible modification and set the U/C legs farther apart than scale, which was one cause of many Spitfire losses and a few pilot deaths.

    • @davidfreed6127
      @davidfreed6127 6 лет назад +4

      I thought the U/C legs looked a little overspread too. But, as you say, a sensible modification, particularly o a scaled down version.

    • @greatlakesgliding7901
      @greatlakesgliding7901 5 лет назад

      @Russ Gallagher The BF109's undercarriage was actually attached to the fuselage, this was a design decision to allow removal of the wings while keeping her on her legs, handy for field servicing, crappy for the poor pilot.

    • @MikeSowsun
      @MikeSowsun 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, the landing gear is much farther apart than 1:1 Spitfire

    • @kkiwi54
      @kkiwi54 5 лет назад +1

      @@greatlakesgliding7901 What a lot of people don't realise is that the undercarriage legs on a bf109 are actually wider apart than those on a Spitfire. The main problem was that they had a greater percentage of their weight behind the wheels than the Spitfire did which made them much trickier on both takeoffs and landings.

    • @billhamilton2366
      @billhamilton2366 4 года назад +1

      This is an exact to scale replica. The cowl below the engine had to be dropped 1/8 inch. The landing gear is exactly where it would be in the full size variety....Please feel free to post a picture of YOUR scale Fighter.

    I just stumbled across this video Ross and it's a true beauty. I remember when you and I were members at the EAA club at Baldwin Airport some 15 odd years back and learning of your design/build challenges. I believe I saw this plane flown at Hannimanns Farm near Oshawa Ontario during an airplane fly in event way back in 2004 or 5. I know I walked with Mr. Ferguson towards the plane from the parking area and he was carrying the models of machine guns (maybe cannons ?) that he screwed on to the wings. A test pilot took the plane to the air for several passes. I think that was part of the plane's certification. I was told at that time that the engine was an aluminum Buick V6 . Maybe that was upgraded to a V8 ?
    In any event, anyone fortunate enough to get a close look at this plane will be taken by the extremely high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that Mr. Ferguson demonstrated with this labour of love. Thank you me Ferguson..

    An enormous compliment to R J Mitchell’s design genius!

    • @billhamilton2366
      @billhamilton2366 4 года назад

      Mitchell was the lead designer but the Germans had been working on elliptical wings between the war. A Canadian engineer who had been working in Germany brought a lot of their technology to Supermarine before WWII and was able to provide some insight into German aerodynamics development. It was all a team effort to produce a winning plane for the Schneider trophy and the Spit.

    • @pcka12
      @pcka12 4 года назад

      @@billhamilton2366 does that mean that Mitchell was an able designer or not, the Spitfire was not it's elliptical wing alone, as far as I can recall none of the schneider trophy aircraft had that shape of wing?

  • @colindouglas7769
