Space Marine humor be like: Space Marine 1: Brother I've lost my leg. Space Marine 2: releasing 9th September 2024, preorder now for early access 5th of September from Saber interactive.
Trident probably symbolizes the three chapters in elara's veil, spears probably means vanguard, tip of the spear warfare. But I don't know, I too are new in 40k.
That's the one thing I do find missing in the writing and lore of 40k with the Space Marines and the Imperial Guard. The gallows humor. I spend a lot of time around former military, many were Spec Ops and the dark gallows humor they have is something else, but its a coping mechanism to deal with the situations they were in. 40k could use more of it, but not too much because then it turns into Deadpool.
On a side note the watery counter part to the salamanders are the definitely in the top 3, I love their homeworld being like a waterworld and the planets light being the bio-luminescence
Ah yes the Dark Krakens, love em, they are essentially Salamander Navy SEALs. Well, if Navy SEALs were often tasked to hunt megafauna and other massive monstrosities in the field.
I really love the Minotaurs chapter for their sense of humor, you actually get to see a ton of it in The Regent’s Shadow. You can always feel the grin behind their helmets as they interact with the imperial fists or the custodes in that novel.
My favorite part of the setting is the absurdity of it all. I like when space marines are unreasonable meatheads, squats start using surfboards, or someone holds a gun four times the size of their body. I dunno if there are any good black library books for highlighting that
11:33 the earlier Roman military veterans were promised farmland as a retirement reward for service, Guiliman had already been active for a very long time by the time he's having the idle thoughts of farming.
I think the most human moments in Warhammer is when characters get to break away from the culture they've been inured in. When stone faced imperial fist shows compassion, when an ultramarine cracks a joke in a fight where they just got backstabbed. The most human moments for me is when a character can just break away from that monolith of people's perception of them and they can take in that moment.
Love the Spears. Also an enjoyer of the small scale moments that you can build a character in. Where things can be molded in a way they can actually be interesting.
I enjoy 40K for larely yhe same reason I like things like Pacific Rim. It's either the smartest dumb setting ever made, or the dumbest smart setting ever made, and its so much fun for that.
I’ve been hoping for someone to make an Emperor’s Spears video since I read their novel as my very first Black Library book. Arthur from the bottom of my Spears-content-starved heart, thank you
There's a funny bit in a Cain book where Amberley Vail talks nostalgically about a children's book about a cartoon flame teaching the reader about promethium and all of its wonderful uses.
I find it amusing that the Dark Angels took the Primaris that came with Guilliman and basically brainwashed them to be out front in every battle to kill them off, then used the tech to make proper Dark Angel primaris
I'd love the Guardians of the Covenant covered! They have some lore, not much but enough to get a good idea what sets them apart, what cool things they did, and a great color scheme to boot.
Thank you for continuing to talk about your passions and spread your own joy to others. But you know I gotta ask you for a video about the Stormcast Eternals.
I get what you mean about relating to them, gallows humor is not for everyone but it is the kind of humor someone like a space marine, a super human demi-god of war that knows with 100% certainty that, he will die, in battle, and it will be painful and Emperor willing, glorious, so having a chapter that embraces that finality while at the same time adding a bit of levity to it makes them way more relatable, particularly considering that these are sons of Guilliman. When it comes to little moments like this, I'm reminded of a scene in a comic that stuck to me, even colored some of my own personal chapter ideas for my custom chapter, it was an old Dark Angels comic, a Raven Wing was bike squad was deployed to take down a Gargant and after killing it, they where chased by a full clan of Speed Freaks, and the last bike on the line was an attack bike, since they had the heavy bolter, they where the rear guard, but also they where slower than the rest, at one point the driver got hit in the back and died, so the other marine joked that his brother got hit, but that would only improve his driving, he told his sergeant that they where going for one final kill as the bike went out of control and ran straight into an ork buggy, the marine cried out "Speed Kills" which was the battle cry they had during the comic. That scene is one of my favorites because it showed to me that, even the somber Dark Angels had a sense of humor, and even though the heavy bolter marine knew he was done for, he just joked about it like they always did during the comic, and went for as he said, "one last kill", knowing that he was quite literally dead but sort of fine with it, which is a sentiment I've seen from other marines, but never quite as... humorous I'd say? He knew he was dead, but then again, he always knew he'd die on his bike, so it's a fitting end for a brother of the Raven Wing.
If you see this Mr. Bones, thank you for uploading these videos so consistently with such quality. I recently had a break up and these videos are helping a lot.
I don't remember if it was you or someone else but there was a short on the Silver Templars that sent me down a rabbit hole. And they've become one of if not my favorite ultima founding chapters. So not a successor but still gonna ask for a video on my boys one day :3
You should check out the video on the "elegiac hero" on xorlore. Your comment about titus, and the kinds of characters you love in 40k remind me of that. It's a discussion of characters worth of eulogy, worthy of remembering but not that you'd ever want to be them. Super interesting take on that grim resolve we see on titus, or garro or grimaldus or a dozen dozen others.
I agree with your take on 40k, by having these little moments of humour sprinkled in they become a little more relatable and you get to see a rare side of them which is really enjoyable to read about! Brilliant video as always my dude, keep it up! 🎉
You already covered an Ultramarine successor in this video but I think The Iron Snakes could be a nice addendum to this video, showing how two chapters come from the same father, developed in similar environments and naturally have some similarities but each one creating an identity that's pretty unique; you will have plenty of material to go by if you also cover them since unlike the Spears they had had more than one full lenght book dedicated to their exploits plus they show up in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade / Gaunt's Ghosts series.
I dont know why but i like learning about space marine chapters, especially about their gene flaws and quirks... Even though I love the Covenant of Fire, I love the gene flaw of the Howling Griffins where they just get overly obsessed Word Bearers over time...
I’m now determined to read the emperor’s spears book. I’m ready the Dark animals omnibus and in one of the last books which includes a certain Vostroyen captain called Landon who feel for a planetary governor’s daughter and got her pregnant, he didn’t know she was his daughter till later. Anyway I’ve reached the point where he has just died to give her and his unborn child the chance to escape taking on a horde of orks killing 2-3 in the process and it broke me because it’s that human individual level I love. His squad goes back and retrieves his body which is missing an arm and leg plus hole in the chest I think. I love getting invested in individual characters not your primarchs your nobody’s like Landon but when they get hurt or die it almost breaks a little bit of you since you can imagine Marita’s pain, the governor’s daughter. It’s why like with other franchises like Star Wars I’m rooting for that storm trooper not the Jedi, that trooper is a normal person who has a family and home to fight for, same with the guardsmen, why I’ll always get attached to the nobody’s who’d blend into a crowd not the 7ft super soldier who you can barely call human. Apart from the Salamanders because their culture is different from a lot of others.
Gotta say gonna look into them watched all the other vids about them but your just simple adoration of these guys just pushed them up to the top of the list
I recently bout a chapter variety transfer sheet for my deathwatch and I wanted to let you know I chose Emperors Spears as one of them because of your videos.
Exorcists or Astral Knights would be dope. Also, not pertinent now, but a potential theme for later when you're looking for ideas to kick-off a new series. I'd like see more information about the Legions before they discovered their Primarch, especially if that Legion had a markedly different way of doing things until said Primarch showed up (like the War Hounds). I know you've touched on that some with your breakdown of the post-Primarch legions, but I wonder if they may be more to explore there. Just a thought; feel free to ignore.
Iron Snakes, I love their traditions, and I love their culture. Honestly I adore them, they're different from marines and feel a lot more human that any space marine in a book I've listened to.
I think they're really Neat! I'm currently making my HB Whaling Lore based Chapter and using a them as a good reference for how to add cultural flavor.
When Mr. Bones said he finished a new batch of books, I was hoping this was in the bunch. I haven't torn through a book like The Spears of The Emperor in a long time.
Don’t suppose you could try a video on the obsidian glaives? They’re a cool chapter concept by the sheer difference in how they view themselves and their purpose as to other marine chapters.
I alway held the opinion that grimdark is greatly highlighted by jovial moments and humor so it's necessary that we have moments that are light hearted fun in the darkness of never ending war
Minotaurs are my fav chapter. They spend their time either stamping on the balls of other space marines (rip lamenters) or leading a coup against guilliman and their chapter master is a gigachad that can make a custodian hesitate before engaging in combat. They also fall under the control of the high lords of terra and guilliman.
I have 3 (Blood Angels) suggestions: - Charnel Guard: the descendants of Dominion Zephon. One of the few Blood Angels Successors that I actually like; - Atlantean Spears: Blood Angels with great foresight powers that didn't participated of the Devastation of Baal; - Cruor Blades: Blood Angels with an autistic hyperfixation on swords (can relate) that went on a penitent crusade for not reaching Baal on time.
So glad someone covered this chapter I love them for the little amount we’ve gotten about them. Can’t stand GW lorewise focusing on the same four chapters and forgetting there’s so much variety.
Emperor's Tears... In reality that was the name of the new strand of the Life Eater Virus... Raven Guard is my fav Legion/Chapter - Victorus aut Mortis! Second Founding: Flesh Tearers & Iron Snakes And last but not least, Black Dragons from the 21 Cursed Founding. Bless the Curse!
I'm busy making an Iron Hands successor chapter that tries to retain their humanity and views their bodies as gifts from the Omnissiah, and the Primaris end up making this an even more strange situation as they are even less human.
I don't read any 40K books nor any kind of firsthand lore, but I really hope we get some new lore for these guys soon, just so we can an other video of you screaming at the top of your lungs "NEW EMPEROR'S SPEARS LORE GUYS"
They really be naming chapters after the Emperor's entire arsenal: Scythes of the Emperor, Swords of the Emperor, Axes of the Emperor, Emperor's Blades, Emperor's Claws, Emperor's Shields, the fucking Emperor's Pointy Sticks, and now the Emperor's Spears All we're missing are the Emperor's Halberds, Emperor's Morning Stars, Emperor's Maces, Emperor's Javelins, Emperor's Arrows, Hammers of the Emperor, Warhammers of the Emperor, and Emperor's Bowels
will you ever cover things like the fall of Cadia or guardsmen related topics? also discovered you through the AA podcast and i have been binging your content its some of the funniest wh lore content out there without too much schtick humor that gets old fast! If I wasn't a broke ass college student I'd definitely be an arthur lord
Just wanted to say that I read Spear of the Emperor because of this video and it was amazing. No lie I didn't have great feelings towards Space Marines, at least how they are presented in the Deathwatch books I had read before, and the book was such a better representation of them that it made me want to start painting Spears immediately lol.
It’s very interesting you see this characters that are so fucking done with everything in 40k but they can’t just quit because everyone depends on them lmao
All my asking for the Novamarines was useless but this is still good. I have a rule that I read one kindle book every 5 irl books and once I'm done with Lion son of the forest and either Yndrasta or Lazarus (whichever anyone here recommends) I'll grab the spears book, I've had my eyes on it for a while now
The emperors spears are fucking rad. ADB went out to interview cops, fireman and paramedics to really get a feel for that kind of brotherhood. As a member of public service, i can say he fucking nailed it. Lol the working guys dont get along with admin (hilarious) Add on top that they are Pict space marines who dont get along with roman space marines. Its just a great inderrated chapter.
I don't know muuuuuch about them but I have taking a small interest in the White Templars then again I haven't found too much other than some small lore and that they were in the animated Tithes episode with the female custodes. Maybe you may know more Senior Bones?
Love how they have some humour when it comes to the passing of their fellow brothers 😂🤣 Also can we get a video about the mortifactors? Pretty please with a cherry on top!

I drink 2 cups of nuln oil before watching this guys videos. I dont know what a warhammer is anymore and my veins have turned black
A warhammer is a hammer used for war
Mmm chug-a-luga!!
Only 2 cups? Rookie numbers.
Drinking nuln oil in this economy

Take a drink for every chapter that is an ultramarine successor, has “stable geneseed”, and follows the codex astardes.

No lie I didn't have great feelings towards Space Marines, at least how they are presented in the Deathwatch books I had read before, and the book was such a better representation of them that it made me want to start painting Spears immediately lol.
Its like the space wolves without whole wolf thing they have. Or like the crimson fists but with more celtic vibes.
It’s very interesting you see this characters that are so fucking done with everything in 40k but they can’t just quit because everyone depends on them lmao
I would love a video on the Raven Guard Raptors and Ultra Marines Scythes of the emperor.
Lol the working guys dont get along with admin (hilarious)
Add on top that they are Pict space marines who dont get along with roman space marines. Its just a great inderrated chapter.
Someone said "Emperor's beers"
I don't know muuuuuch about them but I have taking a small interest in the White Templars then again I haven't found too much other than some small lore and that they were in the animated Tithes episode with the female custodes. Maybe you may know more Senior Bones?
Here lies Brother such-and-such. We will miss him, because the enemy did not.
I love the small scale 40k so much I write fan fic on it.
ADB - writers a book about a chapter/warband.
The entire fandom - this is my favourite chapter/warband ever.
As an English seeing Lord Kitchener does warm the spirits
Love how they have some humour when it comes to the passing of their fellow brothers 😂🤣 Also can we get a video about the mortifactors? Pretty please with a cherry on top!
I really hope you cover Blood Ravens for the XVth
Hell yeah, redden the earth brother
