I've been to most countries in west/central Europe and the balkans but have yet to visit Sweden. The city looks amazing although a little bit too gray in some areas, a few more trees in the city wouldn't hurt anyone
When I was 19 I was lucky enough to visit the land of my ancestors, Sweden. When I got off the boat in Stockholm and set foot upon the dock, I started crying. I had an overwhelming feeling of being home. I didn't expect that, but am unashamed to admit it. I was overwhelmed. I didn't get to know my grandparents very well. My grandmother, who was born in Malmö, Skåne province. My Dad spoke a little Swedish, but didn't teach us. His parents, who migrated to the U.S. didn't want their children to be treated differently, which they were anyway, because anyone from Scandinavia was looked down upon as lesser humans. The Brits were cruelest, then the Irish, Scotts, Welch, and basically anyone from any other part of Europe. My grandfather was in so many fights that he had scars on his hands. But, he died well liked and respected. Things changed a lot. However, when my Dad was in high school, he was the student body president as a junior. The faculty member over the student council changed the rules, so he couldn't be elected the next year. He told my Dad, "There's no way any lousy Swede will win ever again while I'm here." At one point, my grandfather beat up a man who had been taunting him for some time. The man taunted him one time too many, and Grandpa followed him into a bar and picked him up and threw him across the room. The man hit the bar and broke his back. He was paralyzed from just above his waist. My grandpa helped him with just about everything he could, farming, fixing things, and they became good friends. That service he gave the man he injured was what changed a lot of people's opinions about the Swedes in that town. My Dad would be 102 this November, and my Grandpa, 137 last March. I only knew him a little. My grandmother died 5-1/2 weeks before I was born. I looked this stuff up at Ancestry.com. Cool site.
@@KLP99 Beautiful story Karl. Sounds like you have a lot of love for your ancestors and pride of which I've never seen before. Sadly less and fewer people feel that way nowadays. I also had family who moved to the U.S seeking work and hoping to improve their lives, but they like many forgot or simply stopped caring about their ancestry. Quiet sad to hear how your father was treated, but one thing I can say is that your grandfather sounded like a typical swede. Someone who could stand for himself but also be kind and respectful. I hope you have a wonderful and bright life and I hope you can visit Sweden again, possibly with your family. I love hearing stories like these because they make my day. God bless you and your family and for those who've passed, hopefully, you'll see them in the afterlife. /Vilhelm
@@vilhelmgren3765 Yes, I owe so very much for all they did that gave me what I have. I really wish everyone could learn the history of their families. It's important, because as I've aged, and because of traveling when I was younger, I learned people are all basically the same; they want the best for their families and enjoy working hard to see them get the opportunity to succeed and be self-reliant adults, too. In other words, people are alike in more ways than they are different. Of course, I'm speaking of good-hearted people who wish nobody else harm. It's unfortunate there are groups in the world who think they know what everyone should do and will use compulsion and violence to bend others to their will. There really is evil in the world, and it makes me very sad.
Sweden was a major power in the 17th century, but since the mid 18th century its power declined precipitously. It stayed out of both world wars, which undoubtedly was a plus for its population and its economy.
I really would like can live there, IF i Had the chance to live there I would be so happy , for me THE most beauitifull lands in whole world are Norway and Sweden, so the only hard choice for me if I had to choice were be Swedish or norway:)
