    The midges season starts usually in may - june, and they are no joke, and can really ruin your holiday. So be smart, and ALWAYS take your midges headnet.

    Thanks for this video and the comments on your gear. I now put a baselayer shirt around the head end of my pad and stuff my pillow into it, so that the pillow is trapped on the pad and does not slide around or off. Also, the shirt is more comfy against my skin than the pillow material. I like the Downtek water-repellant down in my EE 10 deg Revelation especially after a 12-night cold, wet, and snowy trip this past month in a single-wall Duplex. Tent condensation and the cold meant that every morning there was moisture on the foot end that got packed away when stuffed into my dry sack, but my body warmth alone dried out the bag every evening before falling asleep. That was never the case with my old NorthFace down bag which never dried until I got home. I see you don't put your pad inside your bag, but that might reduce touching the inner tent wall. I have the same little Victorinox knife and used the tweezer to pull a tick off last week. You said you had ticks on you. I'm curious if the ticks were attached or just crawling on you. But I also lost my knife last week. I think because it was black in color and so small. I got a new one in translucent hot pink. I was disappointed in the Altra Timp 1.5 shoes that I have. They are comfortable, but both left and right shoes ripped where the uppers are attached to the soles in the medial arch after less than 150 miles. I see at 1:35 in your video something that looks like a rip in your Altra at the same place, what is that? Also the Timp's have some soft dense foam on the tread that collects thorns and big splinters. I was surprised at how many thorns that were more than 5 mm long I had to pull out of the bottoms of my shoes. I do like the toe protector on the Timp's. It looks like you are starting to get separation at the toe in your Altras which have a different design there. Finally, I really like the Zpacks Vertice jacket and rain paints. They were worth their weight in gold on my May trips and performed superbly. Sorry for the long post, but you asked for comments! :)

    Great video by the "ever smaller" Bigfoot! Glad you had such a successful trip--sounds like you would have needed the tick remover if you hadn't been so well-prepared. Love that you are always honest about your gear choices (even when you are hiking with ZPacks employees :)) Looking forward to your seeing your TGO vlogs.

    I just got Injinji's...they are awesome....
    I mainly got them for running but are interchangeable with hiking/trail running...
    I used to think they were so awkward looking and strange....but once i tried a pair i was sold completely...
    It isnt for preventing blisters, but for a more natural toe spread on the strike....
    TRY THEM!!!!!!

    G'day mate, great video!
    Also a Zpacks fan (have a Duplex) but when I go solo I much prefer the MLD Duomid.
    You should check it out. It's pretty much that tarp with storm doors you described but tried and tested.
    I paid it up with the MLD Bivy Bag 2 for a real go anywhere UL shelter.
    Might be up your alley.
    Anyway, keep the awesome videos coming
    Cheers from Australia :)

    Big Foot, Really enjoy the videos, great information, looking forward to your Scotland hike video. Craig Mains (Hawk) is currently hiking with a Plexamid during his 2019 YOYO of the AT, he seems to like it, might shoot him a note for another opinion. I'm currently using a Duplex but considering getting a Plexamid myself for my 2020 AT attempt. Take care and keep the videos coming.

    I agree about the Uberlight. Had my trial run with it couple weeks ago. It is so slippery. It was almost comical. When i would sit up I would just slip slide off it. I have also the zpack bag, which is part quilt and part bag. 2nd night I slept directly on Uberlite with quilt draped over me. Much better - my body and clothes provided the friction necessary to stay on top. Sliding across bathtub floor on bottom surface was not a problem in my Tarptent Aeon Li.

    • @user-ym6lc7pk1e

      Try putting some seam sealer on bathtub floor - it will keep pad glued to the surfaces zero extra weight.

    Interesting choice in gear for the most part. An idea for you since you are so tall with your bivy idea is the trifecta by 2goSystems... it's served me well so far and is of course Ultra Light and Cuban Fiber/Tyvek with a reflective coating. I was camping this past weekend and forgot my sleeping bag. Realized it when I was heading out and had the trifecta with my ultra light gear in my pickup truck. I grabbed it and a wool blanket I also had and it sufficed in some real cold temperatures this last weekend. Admittedly had to get up one night to put on long johns, but with the longjohn add on it did the trick! Was warm enough and it dipped down to freezing and frost. I'd recommend it for sure after this weekend.

    Nice review! Looking forward to seeing your vlogs of the trip! Thru Pack makes a great fanny back called Summit Bum - Pocket. It has a pocket in front and on the back. I love mine, it fits my iPhone 7 Plus in the case, GoPro on the mini pod my Anker and GoPro charging brick plus snacks. I do wish I had bought the comfy strap and not the standard but other then that I love it.

    Great vid. Thanks. I will keep my Duplex Zpacks tent as I have a palace alone or can double up with my son Liam as needed and as we did on the TGO this year. Given the price of new ones I will keep tweaking my Duplex and make it last a couple of more trips. I did get a little water in when we had the big rain overnight. I think possible through a little hole in the floor that needs fixing. A good nights sleep is key so Xlite pad plus almost any good bag rated down to 0 degrees C is fine with emphasis on light. I would leave behind my Montbell Umbrella as itwas a waste of time. Reduce to Sawyer squeeze plus Smart Water bottles and one gravity Platypus bag. Safe trails!

  • @scottbecker3485
    @scottbecker3485 5 лет назад +1

    The weight penalty by moving to a Zpacks Duplex is negligible compared with the huge upgrade in space, and it offers far more always-available comfort (against bugs, lateral rain, etc.) than any tarp + bivvy set-up can. I love my Duplex for solo use a lot. Have been through a ton of light and ultralight tents from MSR on up through several TarpTents (great!), but the Duplex is the Tent Love of My Life. :-) I would only opt for a different tent (e.g. TarpTent Notch) if I need a much smaller footprint and am willing to be cramped for space. Here in Northern Europe it rains a lot, and having head room (I‘m 5 foot 11 1/2 ) and space to move around and comfortable stow lots of my gear indoors, protected from the rain and mud, is essential. Otherwise, thumbs-up on the Victorinox Classic knife. Great little thing, and weights virtually nothing. Going without a headlamp, though? Never for me. There could be an emergency situation for me or a fellow traveler that could make the headlamp a make-or-break item. For me it‘s like having first-aid stuff along. And there are other seasons in Northern Europe where it gets dark a heck of a lot earlier. ;-)

    I'm currently NOBO on the PCT. Had the same issue with my Uberlite sliding all over my Duplex floor. And then the thing stopped holding air, leaking around the unpatchable valve just before Julian which is only mile 77. It's a total pos in my opinion and way way WAY louder then my xlite, which I had sent to me in Idyllwild. Btw, I have the same issue with wet footbox with my Duplex, so I've been putting my Vertice Rain Jacket on my footbox - dual purpose item lol, you'll love the Vertice! I have the whole Vertice suit and have been using the HELL out of it this PCT year!

    Bummer that the LiteAF Fanny Pack didnt work. I feel like mine is plenty big. LOVE that thing. I carry my phone, S7, in the front mesh pocket with tripod attached pointing up. Super accessible, comfortable, and leaves room inside for tons of other things. One piece of ductape on the inside back panel makes a great pocket for a trail wallet, cash, or in your case a phone. Seems like you would have the same result even with a bigger FPack. Camera tripod against phone face equals no bueno.
    Tarp it up dude. Its a whole different style to explore....plus one on the LP4's. The new Timps are working very well also.

    Thanks for posting this gear feedback - interesting to hear how you got on. I was in Scotland around the same time (in the Western Isles), and the midges were out and biting on a few occasions. Just because you never used it, don't discount the headnet. It's absolutely necessary, trust me. May-June are certainly better than July-September as regards midges in the Scottish Highlands, but I'd even carry one in April and October. When you've been properly 'midged' once, you don't take chances again.
    Nothing wrong with the Victorinox, and it certainly gives you more options than what you had, but I prefer a bit more utility at the expense of a few more grams, as I use my knife/tool for wild fly fishing as well. My combo is an Opinel Trekking Number 7 (35g) for a good strong all-round blade plus a Leatherman Style PS (47g) which consists of a decent plier (primarily for fishing but I use it a lot during cooking!), scissors and tweezer (tick removal). Just under 3oz combined, it's hardly the lightest choice but it has my requirements properly sorted.
    Thumbs up on the full-throttle Groundhogs - I use nothing else on my main pegging points. There are some things I won't compromise on, and having pegs I can be confident will stand up to serious winds is one of them.

    • @FollowBigfoot
      @FollowBigfoot  5 лет назад +1

      From the horror stories I heard from the Scot’s I spoke to, I totally understand about the midges. For the winds you guys get, you definitely need some robust pegs!

    On the mini-swiss army knife. I have one on my key chain and I use it practically everyday for all sorts of things. They do break though, I've broke the scissors off of more than one, and bent the file/screwdriver part. The tweezers are possibly the most useful feature. I have a nice small one-hand opening Kershaw knife I also bring, it's just better for carving sticks if that's something you like to do or for splintering wood to help make a fire.

    That's why i like the hex solo plus tarp with storm doors, its 107" as opposed the plex's 100" length. Also the ends are 42"instead of 36" and both are the same center width. I'm 5'3" so its like quite palatial to me lol. I use the solo plus b/t floor with a Sea to Summit nano net optional for bug protection. Which is roundabout 6 ounces for the two and have no prob's with wind driven rain .....only with mist which permeates into every shelter . I'll stick with the woman's Neo X light at 3.9 r. Great video been following you a while but never said much ...........peace ...love...and light AKA Gramp's Grey Balls

    You look trim &fit after that hike, good for you shedding lbs!! I'm surprised about the Solplex, didn't know the Plexamid was longer with more sleeping headroom. Snap - I too wore the Lone Peak 4.0's and they were superb for me too. No blisters and very little soreness of the feet even after hiking on a few long-ish road sections. I've been intrigues by the Injinji socks for a while and i may give them a go. Good call on the Uberlite as I've been looking at that or the Xlite and your opinion has swayed me toward the Xlite. Took my headnet and didn't use it either but I've had some experience of the ferocious midge so even though they are less prolific in mid-May I will still always take my net. They've literally driven me out of Scotland before lol Permethrin is something I shall be using in future as I had a few ticks on this TGO. I'm doing the Cape Wrath Trail in Scotland next May which is all on the west coast where the midges are the worst so Permethrin and headnet shall be something I'll be 'packing'. Thanks again for some great vids.

    That's why I went with the Altaplex. I don't really need the double wide, but at 6'4", I need the length and height, and the Altaplex has that in spades. I'm not sure if they still make it. Last time I was at the site, it wasn't listed. It's basically a tall version of the Solplex, with extra vestibule space under the bigger storm doors, especially if you hang your pack on your pole. The height also makes for steeper walls so you're not rubbing in the corners like that.

    I've heard good things about tarps, more versatile, and possibly actually warmer due to superior ability to avoid moisture building up inside. So I've been thinking about the idea of instead of a classic tent, first pitch a tarp, but make the tarp designed to then hang a mosquito net tent below it, but with a bathtub floor of course. Very much like the Ray-way setups, but I think they need to change the bathtub floor a bit, and they're not as lightweight as the zpacks stuff, since they're sil-nylon instead of dyneema. Thoughts?

    A belated comment that might have been covered already by someone else but could be useful if not. The TGO Challenge takes place in May which is earlier in the year than the midges come out. Anyone doing the Challege could get away without a head net. However, if you're going to the Scottish Highlands from the middle of the summer on (and certainly in August and September) a net with a small mesh and some midge repellent would be wise. Other things help too. Camp high and in a breeze. Also things like mosquito coils and citronella candles can be effective.

    I would like to see this tent in a Altaplex sort of way. Taller front pole, longer tub like 100” by 40” and with that back pole you have a little more side room than I do in my Altaplex.

    Ticks. Lone star ticks causing an allergy to red meat, just shoot me. Ugh! Hey, awesome vid and info as usual bud, many cheers to you and yours! Ed- without peeking on my part, is that knife the classic sd? I always travel steel heavy because I am more of a knife nerd than anything, different steels for different purposes and all that, folder, fixed blade, saw, just my preference. They say you pack your fears, solutions to problems you worry about, but as for me and knives I'm actually packing my hobby - like taking my knives out on a field trip. It doesn't go well with "ultralight", but it makes me happy and isn't that the goal... You have to have some identifying comforts with you to stay sane, at least the way I approach outdoorsmanship. Many cheers and hails to you good sir!

    Bought the Injinji socks. Never had a blister so soon: after 20 km on day one. Changed it to Falke socks, no problem for the rest of the week. Socks and shoes, and a lot of other things, are almost too personal for general statenents, Nevertheless, I bought a pair of Altra’s too and I’m quite happy with them. Good to hear that they were fine in Scotland too.

    Could you please clarify for me y u would spend so much time z as u should, on tick prevention, ie pre spraying, only to move into a new home w/o a floor??
    Regardless of bivy.
    And, talk about ur head and feet being so close to the ceiling/outer wall that probably won't change with a bivy.
    Then there's the weight considerations between what you have vs Tarp and bivy plus guidelines. That I would think to be of no consequence. Unless you're a gram counter 😮
    Anyway thanks dude for the update 👍
    Looking forward to ur pic's of the trip 😋

      @FollowBigfoot  5 лет назад

      I would treat the outside of my sleeping quilt or bag if I did that. I don’t mind tight quarters like I would see in a bivy, but I would have a tarp over me and wouldn’t have the issue with my toe box touching the wall that is full of condensation. I am going to see what the final weights would be to figure out if it’s really worth it to go tarp/bivy or tent. If I was hiking the PCT, I would probably just have a tarp, no bivy, the first 700 miles

    Scot here - don't leave your midge head-net at home during spring/summer/autumn in Scotland. It doesn't weigh anything, and when you need it you *really* need it - believe me. You didn't use your emergency beacon either, but that's no argument for leaving it behind. Same with the head-net - view it as an emergency safety item.

    A tarp is the way to go in my opinion. I've been using tarp since 1998 and never looked back. I just bought a Mountain Laurel Designs DCF Trail Star and so far with 12 nights I love it. MLD claims it weighs 12 oz, but mine weighs 11.7 oz on my scales. Prior to this tarp I was using and MLD Silnylon Trail Star and had 610 nights under it. Here's my review of the MLD Silnylon Trail Star: ruclips.net/video/g-95q1l2Ml8/видео.html. Something you may want to look at. Enjoy your videos!

    • @adkeric
      @adkeric 5 лет назад +1

      As a member of a Search & Rescue crew here in the Adirondacks, we are trying to educate people to always have a headlamp. It's not just about getting up at night to take a leak or purposefully night hiking. A lot of people mis-judge how long a day hike here will take and caught in darkness. 30-40% of calls for assistance from day hikers is because "it got dark and we can't see". Even if you think you'll be back in your car by 3pm we're asking everyone to always have a headlamp. Just food for thought.
