They do. The reason they're not always called over is because the signs and declarations and instructions -- if they fill them out in English (they're all available in their language (Australia has an insane amount of varying languages available to make sure everyone can truly understand), they're fine to converse. Alas, when they're caught out, they suddenly don't understand a lick of English.

It's because we are too soft - we rarely issue fines and then the amount of the fine is laughable - the fine should equal $ amount of goods confiscated e.g.value of 3000 cigarettes PLUS a fine for having broken the law - in the case of illegal organic material (seeds / food) the fine should represent the potential damage to the environment - as someone has commented here, noxious seeds can cost the country into the billions. AND if the smuggler is not a citizen they should immediately be denied entry - if a citizen, a mandatory prison sentence. Either the importation of noxious organic items is damaging to the environment or it is not.

This is why they kept doing it. It's pretty useless to me and a complete waste of time. They might as well don't bother doing these checks. We have the same thing happening in Canada. If you are coming from a Muslim country enter as a student and then bring over the rest of your family, extended or otherwise. It doesn’t matter if you attend your classes or not, no one ever checks. Didn’t graduate, that doesn’t matter either, once again it is never checked. These people don’t speak English or even try to learn. They don’t have a job and no prospects for getting one. They arrive here knowing nothing about how Canadian live and have decided they don’t care about how we live, they will continuing living the way that they have been living just in a different country. Our government has now implemented a plan that states if you hire a Muslim person to work for your company, they (our government) will pay 75 percent of their salary. Unfortunately if you are from the EU, UK, Australia or New Zealand you are SOL. So right now a Canadian student born here, educated here can’t get a job because the government isn’t willing to pay 75 percent of their salary. Qualified or not, if you can learn on the job you are hired. Where by the university or college graduate who has the qualifications loses out to someone who knows nothing. I used to think I was so lucky to have been born in Canada, educated in Canada and until I retired I had a well paid position. That position has now been filled by someone new to our country who speaks little to no English. They know nothing about the job or what the job entails. I have been asked to come back and train this woman to which I replied an adamant no. She can read the job description manual that I had worked on for more than 10 years. The manual was constantly being updated, changed, job duties changed, or modified or deleted all together. Working on this manual there was always something to add or something to delete. Well guess what, she can barely speak English and she can’t read it at all. Our government let in 1,000,000 Muslims in 2023 of which the majority were uneducated, too old to work, contribute nothing to our tax base and become a drain on our medical system without contributing one cent. I could go on and on and on, but I won’t because it is not fair to the hard working, English speaking Muslims who I have met. They are just as Canadian as I am and hate what our country has become.

Depending on your situation (I went there as a single guy, no one with me), you might get approached by airport security asking for details on where you're going and for how long. Have your passport ready. Have your itinerary ready (if you don't know what that is, Google it, and then make one). Don't just show up at Sydney Airport and think you're going on a random adventure. This is why so many people keep continuing to do this stuff because even when they do get caught, they’re not really held accountable and these poor security agents are basically following rules, but I’m sure that they wish were harsher and stronger that they could enforce

The Mainland Han Chinese have had a staggering level of superiority and ethnocentrism drummed into them by the ruling CCP government for over 50 years.
They don’t think that any other culture or race matters and often expect to get away with anything they do wrong because of where they come from.

In 1996, I traveled to China for personal reasons. I was advised to carry cartons of cigarettes to use as "thank you gifts." Basically small bribes. I don't remember the rule. I think it was something like 20 cartons per person. We also carried $10,000 USD in old 100 dollar bills in belts around our waist. The new one had just come out, but the Chinese didn't trust it. We had to hunt down that many old bills. This was used for outright bribes to smooth the way for what we needed. It worked. We came home $20,000 poorer. Everyone seemed to smoke there so the cigarettes were very helpful.
