It’s because Jeff was known for giving grand speeches and storming out, so she was like “yea whatev JEFF” and that’s why the classmate was so ready to film it
This kid was right on every mark. He is obviously extremely intelligent, and at the time was bored out of his mind. Sadly, there are a lot of Jeff Bliss out there. These kids become disillusioned, some get into trouble, drop out etc. It's heartbreaking. One size education doesn't work. Students are taught to take standardized tests, instead of being taught to comprehend, retain, learn, and apply. Not every student is meant to go to college, but every student has a gift. One can become a janitor, and one a doctor. Both are just as important, and both can be successful. Success is finding your gift, and doing it to the best of your ability. So many of these kids end up feeling like failures, and they're not. These teachers need the courage, and passion to step out of the box they've been forced into, along with students. An involved teacher the day Jeff made his speech, would have offered to let him come back to teach the next days lesson. I have a feeling they would've both learned something. What better way to teach your student, than to put him in your shoes, and have him learn the material also. As a teacher, you would learn more about your students, and ways to improve yourself. Just because something has always been done the same way, doesn't mean it should be.
Standardized tests are an important tool for measuring student progress and teacher effectiveness. There can be good criticisms of how standardized tests are designed, administered, and used, but it's completely unreasonable to reject them entirely. An involved teacher would immediately send Jeff Bliss to the principal's office. You don't just get to interrupt class to give a vague inspirational speech. lol
@@wfjhDUI I'm not dismissing standardized tests. I am saying that they shouldn't be the top priority. In the US, government funding for schools are largely based on standardized test scores. Therefore, tests have become the priority, instead of giving teachers, and students time to focus on chomprehension/retention. Teachers don't have it easy. There are many out there that care, and go beyond expectations. There are many who don't, or have just become complacent. There are those teachers that have a gift for it, and others that just regurgitate information. You mentioned punishment. I agree that actions have consequences. This is a lesson that should be learned young, in order to create responsible productive adults. However, the purpose of punishment is to instill a lesson. As I stated prior, not everyone learns by the same means. In this case, by giving him the opportunity to teach a lesson, he will learn accountability. He will have the choice to step up, learn the material, and teach the class, as he stated. Secondly, he could choose to decline the assignment, take the bad grade, discredit his boasts, and sit down. By choosing to teach the class, he would learn what his teacher faces. He would have to learn with comprehension, preparation with presentation, and public speaking. We all know how high school kids can be, especially to their peers. This will teach him empathy for his teachers, and a little humility. In the best scenario, it might just light a spark to inspire an upcoming teacher, and possibly give him the confidence/self worth to invest in himself. Even though peers can be mean to their others, they also listen to them. The whole class will be paying attention. The teacher by allowing this opportunity, it still doing her job, and accomplishing so much more. The teacher can observe how her students respond. She may see new ways to reach her students, and what they best respond to. She can observe what they have understood/retained, and incorporate approaches that work for them, as well as for herself. As adults, we often forget that kid's don't have it easy either. We expect them to forget what they face outside of school, (hunger, abuse, illness, loss, grief, etc) come in, sit in one place quietly, not go to the bathroom, get hungry, not get frustrated, and do it for hours. As adults, many of us couldn't do this. Yet, we expect it of our children. Structure is a good thing, but change can also be. As a school system, a teacher, or even student, if what you are doing isn't working for optimal learning, try a new approach.
@@jeremyphillips3087 One of my High School chums was very intelligent, like genius level, but he was so bored and annoyed by asinine busy work that he just couldn't muster the desire to complete it. He eventually just dropped out of school and got his GED two years early and went on to University instead of sitting through two more years of drivel.
I mean this kindly: It's 'couldn't care less'. This is a really common error, so I swear I'm coming to you nicely, because you're right. 'Could care less' means that the subject--in this case, the teacher--cares at least on some level. 'Couldn't [could not] care less' means the subject--the teacher--doesn't care at all.
I had a social studies/history teacher that was like this also. She wouldn't even pass out the worksheets herself. She'd get a student to do it. She just sat on her ass all day and ate food. Always had a big gulp-sized cup and food on her desk. And if you looked behind it, you'd see that she had sauce bottles and food containers everywhere. I think she had more food-related things than school supplies on/in her desk. She had a whole drawer dedicated to snack cakes.
The worst is when good teachers burn out. I had an awesome freshman year history teacher, always trying to engage the whole class in conversation and share the most interesting details of each lesson. Unfortunately the kids who had him the years after me essentially bullied him until his enthusiasm faded. He’s burnt out now.
@@Apudurangdinya As someone who went through two sets of shirts parents and am trying my best to be a good guy, I agree. It's really about how one let's their environment shape them.
I know a few public school teachers who had their own children in private school so they know public school education is horrible. As his mom, she could have homeschooling him during his HS years and he probably could have graduated within 1 year.
Naw not really. I had kids like this in my high school. And they’re always trying to be like this dude. Motivational but they usually flunk class cause being a loser who drinks with their weird friends is cool to them. Most of them got their GED’s and dropped out too and then blame the system because they decided to go against society rather than work with in it like a normal human being.
@Jonehones I have friends who are teachers and they care a lot about getting students educated in ways that work with their individual learning styles, but they feel completely hand tied and held hostage by low (and constantly lowering) budgets, you’d have no idea how much of their own money teachers put back into their own classrooms, and by lawmakers who base how much money the school districts get on ridiculous standardized tests. And that money often has to go to things like keeping mold out of the school rather than anything else. The best teachers end up leaving the field, going back to school to teach at the collegiate level, or stay poor and get burned out at the lack of control over their own lesson plans they are allowed. The issue isn’t with the teachers, it’s the superintendents and lawmakers.
If she talked back: fired. Or accused of some racism or -phobia. Plus, she might have known she was being filmed, so anything she said would've been wrong according to the internet. Plus there's school shootings, so don't antagonize a student. And she's wise enough to know that he's talking out his ass. Teens are dumb and think they're entitled to everything.
He already accomplished more than many will in their entire lives. He spoke up, pointed out the obvious and now it's up to us to take action. He moved us so much we are still taking about him in 2021

I went to Duncanville High School when Jeff was a freshman, I was a senior. Didn’t know the guy personally but we knew people mutually. I’m glad that video went viral since I would always hear that teacher was a bitch. Yet that high school had a lot of phenomenal teachers.
do you know whatever happened to him? i mean, he did not do anything inspirational after that and if he ended up loading trucks in UPS then apart from the teacher to be a bitch. indeed he was just bitching... you have to support your words with your deeds you know?

My science teacher this year is just what Jeff wanted, she talks with her students, get hyped up for what she's teaching, helping people learn no matter what, and goes into conversations with out students about anything related to the topic we were learning about that day, hell she even brought in a few bugs for us to hold sometimes, including her small pet tarantula who was very friendly I might add. She even got a new elective made in our school for bio ethics. She's someone you can tell really cares about her job and teaching the new minds of our nation.
I hate that bioethics is even a thing. There shouldn't be a debate on the morality when it comes to the results of scientific pursuit. We wouldn't have half of the knowledge/treatment of diseases without human experiments and suffering. Oh well. It's all for the better.
Internet people are weird and need to understand the real world. Why would they honestly expect him to base his entire life off of one viral moment from his high school sophomore year?
Who are these internet people you speak of? You yourself are yelling at clouds having convinced yourself that any of the people actually care what he does and aren't just momentarily being entertained
Some people proved his point. Instead of getting inspired by themselves they desperately wanted him to be this teacher that would single handedly reform the education system. When in reality he just a normal dude getting fed up with the system. And wanted a normal life.
He actually kept himself from cursing until the teacher said he was bitching. Someone is more mature, and here's a hint - it's the one named Jeff Bliss
I mean... Jeff wasn’t wrong about college. Now days it’s really about “the buddy system” rather than college degrees. I think he saw the root of the problem early on. He seems like a pretty smart and logical kind of guy. He’s definitely smart to stay off of social media. He probably just wants to be left alone lol I still think he’s right about everything he’s said and though he may not want it, he deserves the credit.
@@jaydwy8069 i never went to college either, but taking a wild guess - she probably was referring to how college is mostly about gaining names and numbers. Its all about WHO you know, not WHAT you know... sadly. For example, In the music industry this is very clear. You can find 16 year old kids who are musical savants on youtube, yet the most famous and highest paid artists couldn't tell you the chords in any given key. But if you attend Berkeley for a week then you can get enough connections to do something within the industry. You dont have to study or even finish school, just buddy up with people "in the know". Im exaggerating and generalizing slightly, but its true. Ive yet to meet anyone who would disagree. The internet has changed the role college plays in society. Universities are no longer the gatekeepers of higher education. You can watch highly respected professors teach their entire semester online, often for free. You can read any literature no matter how esoteric online too. In modern society college has become a place to connect socially with people higher up on the proverbial food chain.
@@jaydwy8069 it’s basically nepotism. For a lot of majors, the way you end up successful is by making connections with the right people. For example I struggled to get a job in engineering and I talked to guy to see if I could get some advice. While he was giving me his “advice” I found out that he got his job because both his mom and dad got him a job at the company he works for because they worked there.
Probably because he actually has a plan of what he wants to do with his life, whereas college grads are just incurring debt they can't pay back because they don't have any plan with their life. The only reason you should be in grad school is if you need the degree for a job you know you want, like a doctor. If you don't need the higher degree for the job you want or you don't know what job you want, DON'T GET IT!
@@arthurfine4284 It's funny because the people you mention clearly understand this lesson. I'll tell you right now that any kid with a fucking brain came to this conclusion, being in college doesn't make you somehow more ignorant than those not in it.
Wisdom and Intellect are not the same. For wisdom, you need only common sense and experience. For Intellect you need knowledge and know-how. College is just expensive daycare.
Weirdest thing is nobody else followed up on the education issues. So even when it became viral has anyone else done anything about it? I hope Jeff lives the life he wants.
@@BlastinRope look, the point of the whole "education system is broken" thing on this video is that there ARE teachers slacking off/not educating their students properly. It would be very unfair of the parents or the students to call out the teacher if the shortcoming is on their side but in this case, it was the teacher's fault!
@@BlastinRope I'll admit there's some students that slack off in class. But there's also the fact that there's teachers out there that don't care to teach the class in the first place. That’s the parents job, or the legal guardians. We pay taxes so that these schools can bring up the next generation... parents are not very involved in their children’s education especially in public schools

Caring is above her pay grade. A lot of teachers may have been passionate at the beginning of their careers. They later become scarred by a system that disrespects their needs.

@@youtubesucks3882 Unionizing is among the worst things you can do if you want teachers that care. Many teachers’ unions are the ones pushing for those packets and make it easy for teachers who aren’t passionate about teaching to remain in the system. I’m not against unions as a whole, but they’ve absolutely wrecked the U.S. education system.
@@jippy8976 The thing that has teachers pushing packets are a lack of real resources and limited paid hours as well as the introduction of terrible standardized tests who's results determine funding. The fact that there is a teachers union is the only reason anything in my neck of the woods gets pushed for and gets done right.
"the student could've handled the situation in a better way" as the teacher tells him "quit bitching" "bye" "leave" "can you get out" "okay bye" because shes too embarassed to be schooled bc shes not doing her job at the one she works at. he didnt raise his voice, he didnt cuss her out, he was respectful and said what needed to be said.
A "better way"? Jeff handled the situation perfectly and that principal is a total douche bag. Jeff didn't scream at the teacher. He didn't threaten her. He expressed how he felt. His points were well articulated. Teachers with lazy attitudes like that need to be spoken to that way.
I don't think anyone sane would say the former. Only privileged crying teachers and school administrators that siphon money like leeches, from everyone else.
That's what most teachers do. Well actually now adays they sit you on a shitty website and that's about it. The technology has changed but that's all that has.

Hearing that his mother was a teacher makes total sense. My mother, God rest her soul, was an educator for 25 years and ALWAYS stressed to me the importance of education. She cared deeply for not just the grades & academic performance of her students, but of their all-around well being. She wanted "her kids" to learn and to be kind, thoughtful, well-rounded, productive members of society. The "teacher" in this video is a joke and an embarrassment to all educators who strive to shape minds. She was more concerned with shutting Jeff down and talking down to him. She should be ashamed of herself, but unfortunately she likely lacks the grace and class to feel that way. Any teacher who dryly tells students "this is my paycheck" and then tells them to "quit bitching" when they want interactive learning immediately forfeits their position of respected leader.
What I don't get is how she let him drop out a 14. Whenever I hear about a kid dropping out I just wonder what the parents do. Like are they just sitting at home all day?

It’s a good thing he didn’t become a teacher in this age of standardized testing. Teachers sometimes have no choice what to give students. What they do have a choice in is their interaction with students. As a teacher, I was rarely behind my desk. Teachers are under paid and overworked but I taught for over 30 years and most teachers do it for the love of seeing the students learn. Just like any other profession, there are bad teachers. I can brag and say I was a good one. I had to medically retire due to stage 4 breast cancer. Do I miss it? I miss my colleagues and the wonderful bright inner city students I spent my career with! I do not miss the standardized testing and almost robotic way we are made to teach these days. We need more young men like this to wake us all up!! All he owes us now is that he is living a happy life!! Thank you Jeff!!
Indeed. I went to college with the full intention of becoming a teacher, but that didn't pan out due to my lack of executive functioning skills. In a way, though, I'm sort of glad my career went in a different trajectory (I now work in the healthcare revenue cycle field), as I've read numerous stories of schools only focusing on meeting state standards and getting students to pass state-mandated tests as well as teachers having to walk the tightrope of keeping administrators, students, and parents satisfied.
He's "laying low" because he didn't turn out the way everybody wanted him to. He's just an average guy working an average job who may or may not have finished high school. You can't swear as a teacher? I had a 11th grade Math teacher that was a Vietnam vet and swore like a sailor. I was amazed that different regions of the US have this issue of just getting packets as assignments. The only time in school I received packets for class was when a substitute was there for a day or the week the teacher was out. When I saw that video years ago, I thought it was for a similar reason, I didn't realize this was how some schools were taught regularly. It's sad. The student's potential is not met or even discovered by that student, they end up bored or hating school if this is the only education the student experiences.
I was lucky that I had good teachers. My high school was moving in that direction and I feel I got out right at the right time. My high school now looks like a prison and most of the good teachers are no longer there.
i always thought it was extremely even more special because he was able to say all of this without cursing a single time , even while being so passionate and probably WANTING to.
"The education system was never designed to educate only to produce obedient corporates slaves." {Google Careers ad immediately starts playing) LOL the irony
It's really dumb that ppl just put this whole story and expectations on Jeff. After he went viral, he just tried to open ppl's eyes about the education system and express his annoyance with it and disappointment. He wanted a good education but the lame system was failing him. All this other crap ppl put on him and expected just drove him away, which I would of too, and just made me disappointed and annoyed in the ppl he was trying to wake up as they were not listening but trying to make him and shape him into something. They were not even listening to the msg. I don't blame Jeff at all for leaving. Ppl are really so fucking dumb
True Lex, the moment was recorded and put on the internet where the masses hijacked, repurposed and bastardized the message Jeff gave. When you have morons like @Andrew Nevarez comment on this thread, showing their own lack of comprehension, and projecting intent and even confusing self advocacy for entitlement. Of course your going to get these dumb masses thinking that it's suddenly "up to Jeff to take on the entire system", People demanded that he became an educator, principal, local politician, even president because they thought that just because he had the "audacity" to openly disagree with the current education system, it was now HIS responsibility to improve it; as an 18year old in HS!! When in fact, the responsibility should have been on the parents to DEMAND actual change from their local school systems. But that would mean the population had to actually do something, instead of their performative online outrage, where they could pass on responsibility to Jeff for their kids' education. Jeff seemed to have taken the opportunity to go on TV news interviews because he was hoping that the adults in the USA, with voting power and actual means of persuasion through their wallets and taxes could help his outrage turn into an actual movement for better education, at least in his community. The saddest part is that he became the "face" of a single mans' movement without any regard for his own wants and passions as far as his own future and his vision of self success.
@Nightgail Yeah my friend, I've been the same way... I'm in my 30's now, and really, the level of outrage or dissatisfaction and disappointment is constant. The majority of people are "indoctrinated" or coerced into benefitting the capitalist system, or worse, religion. The best you can do is to always question the cultural trends, challenge your own convictions and worldview, and strive for objective understanding. And more importantly, don't hesitate to share your difference of opinion. It's what keeps us from being just another fish in the sea. Hugs!,💜🐈⬛
@Nightgail i get what you are saying about people being professional 24/7; but I have to disagree. There's a difference between behaving professional and adopting a fake personality. This makes more sense as you interact with the world and you learn to be in professional situations. Civility, and politeness is necessary to have in all aspects of society especially if you decide to have your own business, network with suppliers or your own clients. Professional demeanor isn't reserved for the corporate world. Ever work as a restaurant server?? I've built loyal customers and even disarmed total Karen's who came back to apologize for their behavior because I was professional without being condescending. It was benefitting me, because I made money off tips by having customers return to be served by me. All this to say, while I understand you, we still have to understand the "why?" things are this way. More often than we realize, people don't have a chance to be completely "themselves" without facing a consequence, be it work, friends, or the ability to take care of oneself well. You gotta account for the millions who get beaten down and lose their individuality, because not everyone can become an outsider and be happy. Does that make sense?
I’ve always respected him for standing up and saying what he said. My advanced Chem teacher used to sit at her desk and play solitaire and make us do packets in order to learn. Everything was outrageously confusing in the packets and when we would ask her for help sometimes she would ignore us or only tell us once and if we asked again she would tell us to just read the packet. Lots of kids failed that class. In the middle of the year she gave birth to her kid and in walks this old school chalk board substitute. He said “fuck this packet shit” (not his words but my interpretation) and he taught us the old fashion way and made it exciting by adding games and rewards for answering questions. My grade bumped up from an F to a B that semester. Then she came back and I went down to a D. So, hearing this dude stand up to his teacher like that made me so gosh darn happy
Jeff Bliss along with my experience with my son's experience is the inspiration behind me going to school to become a special education teacher. Idk man! I feel like this poor young man is misguided and coddled. Obviously listens to too much rap music and after school movies. I could understand his gripe if he was actually going out of his way to learn stuff not being taught in school.
@@juanatayde7844 Thanks for clueing this old hag in. I was thinking he had listened to too many of those larger than life character lawyers we had back in the day. The kid missed his calling, IMO.
This issue of teachers who just don't care, is amazing to me.... By trade I'm a machinist (not even going to start on schools not discussing blue collar careers), but I've also spent a significant amount of time teaching vocational classes related to manufacturing to adults ranging from straight out of HS to individuals 20-30 years older than myself. Teaching was a much more stressful and tiring experience than I would had ever imagined it would be, but at the same time I don't know that there's ever been another experience in my life that made me feel as proud as seeing a student that I worked with grow and eventually excel in the program I was teaching in.
He reminds me of my best friend growing up. Never did his work, and would call teachers on their BS, and was usually in suspension, but any time standardized testing came around they would stick him back in class to raise the budget. He eventually dropped out, and without a diploma was the most successful person I know. I play chess with him online everyday and he's also the best chess player I know
I dropped out. It was so boring. It was just read this read that there was no teaching. I got my ged and went to jail twice, and now I'm successful. Upper middle class isn't being rich, but I live a Good life. You don't need education to be successful, though I do regret not getting my diploma
@@jb0915 I got my diploma and it's never done me any good whatsoever. It's never helped me get a job a GED couldn't get, and anytime I've tried bringing it to a job interview they couldn't care less. I actually regret not dropping out of school and just getting my GED
Jeff fought a battle, earned a medal and quietly went to on to live a life as a hard-working American. Countless Americans have done this, and they all deserve to be called heroes.
I can relate. This is the reason I dropped out too. Every single word, every single teacher I listened to was so empty, I couldn't connect to what I was doing. I swear to God it was like listening to a lecture from the character mrs. Trunchbull from the movie directed by Danny devito "Matilda". Selfishness and complacency rules the curriculum. There's more to life than just success.
I've had many problems like this in my own schooling and I can confirm that this is the "lighthearted" response. Teacher not caring whatsoever and staff actually seeming to care but just for the publicity sake. In my situation, teachers blew up on me. Staff blew up on me. We cant let this keep happening. Please unite with this speech as he says and lead this nation to a better place. Otherwise, the future generations will continue to have nothing because we didnt fix anything.
What I love about the subjects Wavy tackles is that I was usually unaware of the aftermath and resolution after the viral peak. This one in particular was a surprise. I remember the video, but there's a beautiful and tragic give or take that I missed out on. Bless this kid and bless what he stands for.
I remember my History teacher in college was one of the best teachers ive ever had because he was incredibly passionate about History and talked with such enthusiasm. People were engaged and whenever he would ask the class a question and if we were to answer it wrong he wouldnt just say wrong, he would direct our answer the correct question instead (if you understand what I mean). So we wouldn't technically feel dumb for being wrong, but would learn why the answer we gave wasnt correct and give us info/facts about our answer at the same time. I wish I could take his class again.
"i certainly agree that the student could've handled the situation in a more appropriate way, but the content of [jeff's] message is a conversation we like having in this school district" principal totally got where jeff was coming from and supported him, put the teacher on permanent leave. This principal won the game man
Wow this kid really found his maturity in those 2 years out of school. Mom is a fantastic teacher because she showed her son how to learn! He did it at his pace and on his time, but isn't that what we truly want for all children. He's certainly ahead of his time for sure, maybe he should have home schooled so he could have a better opportunity to dig deeper into those classes. The teacher found a way to work the system, sit back and let the future fend for themselves. She gave up and gave in to the broken system, which is sad because that teachers test is no joke and very difficult to pass. He should be a philosopher not a teacher!
I'm on the autistic spectrum and I would love to be a teacher and share knowledge and be excited about it but I know that there is no way I could deal with other teachers and parents and that's heartbreaking. It's so hard to see someone being like this is just a paycheck for me when for me it would be so fulfilling.

As a school system, a teacher, or even student, if what you are doing isn't working for optimal learning, try a new approach.
well said my friend

Which is fine for normal people like us, but if Jeff Bliss came out and was like "I'm working at UPS and I never finished high school. I'm just trying to get by", the whole internet would be like "omgggg so much wAsTeD pOtEnTiAl 🥴" and i'm sure Jeff doesn't need/want to hear that.

It's George Bush's fault yo

It's really dumb that ppl just put this whole story and expectations on Jeff. After he went viral, he just tried to open ppl's eyes about the education system and express his annoyance with it and disappointment. He wanted a good education but the lame system was failing him. All this other crap ppl put on him and expected just drove him away, which I would of too, and just made me disappointed and annoyed in the ppl he was trying to wake up as they were not listening but trying to make him and shape him into something. They were not even listening to the msg. I don't blame Jeff at all for leaving. Ppl are really so fucking dumb
Its because only a dumb kid could be so idealistic and entitled.
@@BlastinRope It's no ones fault if you're miserable, keep this mindset to yourself.
