He only drives up here to take kids down into the ocean if your *really* bad” and right then someone randomly pulled up to our house and knocked on our door and she was like “DONT LET THE SQUID GET ME. ILL BE GOOD. ILL BE GOOD I PROMISE” And for the next like 3ish years if I ever needed a break I would just take out my phone and start dialing “the giant squid”

There was a recent video release of a bigfin squid "attacking" an ROV. I use air quotes because it's hard to tell if it was just being blown around by the jets or if it was actually attacking, but consensus seems to be that it might have been self-defense after being startled. It seemed to be using its filaments like a coil-like whip to attack. This could maybe suggest that they're more active predators as opposed to just waiting for food to bump into them like how jellyfish feed, but we don't know for certain.

I feel like another thing to mention when discussing the size of these animals is that it can be tricky to gauge size of things in the open ocean because there’s nothing to compare the size to, nor is there anything in the back to gauge how far away it is. If one happens to be spotted on chance there isn’t going to be the tools or intention needed to measure it

New subscriber here. I’d watched another of this channel’s videos before this - the siphonophore one - and when I saw the channel creator crediting an artist whose work had gone kinda viral sans credit, I knew I had to sub. That’s class, right there. Ensuring someone gets the credit they deserve when it would be easier to just forget about it and use the image uncredited. That’s class.
As to what I would rename the squid? The Phantom Squid. They’re elusive, scary looking, hang out in the world’s flooded sub-basements, are vaguely menacing, and are very misunderstood. Sort of like the Phantom of the Opera. Phantom Squid.

    He's just floating there... menacingly!
Great video! I always wondered what these little guys were called. The name needs to be changed, though. I'm sure we will find out more and more about these creatures soon and I am here for it!
First time coming to your channel and I subscribed right away! Great stuff!
I am obsessed with marine biology, but I am too poor to afford to go to University so I read and watch a lot of documentaries.

I am so glad yourube has recommended your channel to me! It is amazing for my interest in the ocean since I was little! I'm in my early 30s now & still am fascinated by all of the things we don't know and creatures we think are weird & alien looking! My love for things like this definitely came from living in a seaside town growing up & my dad having tropical fish then marine fish. Though now I know how bad keeping those fish is for our environment & the seas & oceans & how they dont survive anywhere near as long in captivity

0:44 The movie "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissu" had a subtle joke about how deep sea footage often just looks like puppets where any time the footage was shown in the movie they just used puppets, really obvious ones that looked pretty bad.

The Big Fin Squid is my 7 year old nieces absolute favourite marine animal. She loves that it’s so creepy and scary. I call her my horror baby because she is fascinated by everything scary. When she found out that they lived the Great Australian Bight. Like just off the coast where we live it made her day. She was like I can go find them now. 😂
Absolutely going to show her this video.

"Weaver squid". I know they don't actually do anything that could be called "weaving" the way spiders do, but it's the most evocative name I can think of related to their most striking feature.

New common names for the big fin squid:
    -Squidward
-Mommy long legs (daddy was taken)
    -Little eyes squid
    -VHS squid
    -The flying nun squid
    -Amcom
-The Johnny Cash squid (they've been everywhere)
-The wide fin squid (its just as wide as it is long)
-Spaghetti angel squid (relation to the spaghetti monster)
    - can we just name them after the scientist that found em? Like the *insert last name here* squid face
😂 This is an amazing video and im hooked!

5:01 I'd assume they're for sensing when other creatures touch them since it can't see obviously. Hunting with a sense of touch.
    5:52 damn, guess I'm wrong
