Plot info I found in an interview with Connie Nielsen right after I made this:
"The long-awaited sequel picks up 16 years after the events of the first film. After Maximus (Russell Crowe) died in the Colosseum in the original, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) sent her son, Lucius (Paul Mescal for the sequel), to Numidia, on the northern coast of Africa, to shield him from the increasing corruption of Roman society. Her plan could only work for so long, though. When Roman forces led by her lover, General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal), invade Numidia and unknowingly take Lucius captive - killing his wife and many fellow soldiers in the process - Lucius finds himself back in Rome (as an owned gladiator), ready to seek revenge."

I think the plot is not too bad, but I do not understand the part where Lucilla sends Lucius to Africa...and he doesn't remember anything basically and casually also ends up as a gladiator, honestly that is a storyline, that a 10 year old could come up with. Still hyped for the movie tho - lets hope he is at least close as good as the first one.

Lucilla sent Lucius away for his own safety. Rome was in turmoil and went through multiple power hungry emperors in the months after Commodus' death. (Technically, Lucilla was killed by Commodus in real life before he died, but we're ignoring that, lol). Lucius' life was in danger constantly because he was being used to control Lucilla. She is really a pretty bird in a cage due to her lineage but lack of any real power because she's a she. Lucius, I'm sure, does remember her, but he resents her for sending him away. Disowns her, if you will. He ends up a gladiator when his city is conquered by General Acacius and thus captured and sold into slavery. Macrinus buys him. And from there things progress as everyone ends up all in the same place again. Mother, son, and the general who's married to her and captured him. Fun times. :D
