  • The fat guy has won Wang Hao twice in the National team.
This is the Pro versus amateur competition in China. The fat guy is classified as the "amateur level" in China. His name is Ye Minghui. However, he is not a real amateur player. He is fat, he doesn't move but his feeling is amazing.

Just to clarify, the club he has played here in Portugal was Sporting Clube de Portugal, which is one of the most famous portuguese football clubs, but also the biggest powerhouse in portuguese table tennis history.

Regardless of the size of this wonderful player. There are two immediate things that comes to mind: 1. The understanding of the rotation of the ball, and 2. The feeling between the way he struck the ball with his paddle.
His opponent was playing one sided, thinking to out top-spinning him at every point. Reading of the arc of the spin and the rotations is more crucial than ever. Depends on the clearance from the arc over the net and the subsequent bounce you anticipated, it is very important to make that decision and 'adjust' your paddle angle accordingly. Often in the match, his opponent completely misread the amount of rotation of the spin being too light or too heavy. That caught him off guard as to not moving his feet properly or adjust his positions accordingly. Therefore, he was too late or way overhits from a far mid-distance, often at an angle where he was at a huge disadvantage.
This player was extremely smart varying a combination of light and deep chops to keep his opponent guessing. Also he has a great deceptive long, deep serve, but got a great extreme undercut so it is like a breaking ball in baseball. A faster version of the "ghost serve" which just handcuffed his opponent.
Being large does not affect anyone in table tennis, as long as the player knows how to play their own strategy properly. This was why I wasn't surprised that he beat Wang Hao twice on the National PRC Team. Despite not being selected in the elite top group. Also this showed how deep the PRC Table Tennis really is. It is completely scary for the rest of the World figuring out how to catchup.

having played some large players, I do find they can really impart quite a lot of spin on the ball in a simple lift and rotate motion, using their mass to their advantage. And they don't have to move all that much because of this control - rather other players often have to keep up with their pace.

I'm also a BIG tabletennis player... I just wish I was a GREAT one instead...!😂😉 Joke aside, it's not all that important if you're small or large if you have a good understanding of the game. To read the game well is just as important as reading the spin. You don't have to be so very quick if you can read and anticipate the opponents intentions, and because of that already be standing in the right position..... waiting for the next shot to come.

In the United States, it's considered inappropriate or rude to refer to someone (man or woman) as "the fat guy" or "the fat girl". It is considered degrading to the person. It's better to say they are overweight. Just thought you might like to know. But yes, often times we call people "fat" here and it does hurt the person's feelings.

@@ph469 Well this is not an United States channel, where some terms may sound offensive. It's an international channel and in many parts of the world fat is not pejorative. Even in my country, calling an African-American "negro" is not offensive and they don't get offended by it if you call them like that. As my black friend said, what should I get offended if someone call me negro if I'm a negro!
This amazing player is fat, and coach is not calling him a pig or a fatso. If you even check the dictionary of Cambridge the definition of "fat" is not classified as an offensive term ("fatso" is). "Fat" simply means "someone who weighs more than normal". Sometimes we need to understand that our own culture doesn't necessary applies to the rest of the world and each country has its own culture.

He plays quite well. He, and his compatriot and opponent also cheat the server quite well, perhaps too well. Maybe that's how he won the game.
Even I can smash a pop-up ball on a hidden serve. I can win 99% of those, obviously.

Being big (let's not say fat) it's an advantage in a few sports, in this case adding your weight to a hit makes the difference in the speed of the ball.
