    Clothing I Don't Wear As A Petite
    I break a ton of "petite" rules with my wardrobe.
    Life is too short to stick to strict laws when it comes to fashion. You need to have fun with it. However, these are the clothes you will rarely find in my closet, things I try to avoid as a 5'1 woman.

    Just to sum it up for us :
    1. Large Horizontal stripes
    2. Big bold patterns
    3. Ankle length strap for footwear except nude maybe
    4. Oversized bags and accessories
    5. Knee length skirts - go above or below
    6. Juniors clothing
    7. Low rise jeans

      Neha Sharma Thanks for the sum up! 😊 Low rise jeans are hard to avoid, though. I have a short torso, and I find that low rise makes my torso longer.

    I really appreciate you addressing not shopping in the junior or even children's sections. I have so many of my taller friends tell me "you can just shop in the kid's sections" and they don't understand the reason why not. The really have no idea. That you for helping me get better words to explain that's not a good idea for me.

    • @omggg94

      Iris L I definitely shop at the kids section at Zara. I actually get compliments whenever I wear their pieces, especially coats.

    • @irisl7817
      @irisl7817 5 лет назад +20

      @@omggg94 Great. Congratulations on doing what works for you. It doesn't work for everyone. I still find it insulting when people suggest it. The shape of pieces don't work for my body type; a 30F bra size and hips just don't work in the children's department. It actually doesn't work in ANY department. But helps me save money on clothes, I guess.

    • @cynicalromantic
      @cynicalromantic 4 года назад +21

      @@irisl7817 Agree with this 100%. It's condescending, it shows a total lack of understanding on people's part about the differences in body proportion, and it's terrible advice for any petite who has ANY curves at all. I'm a grown woman, not a child, and I will dress like one, thank you very much.

    I am in my 30s and have struggled with looking much younger than I am. "Where is your mommy?" someone asked me when I was out shopping in high school. Just a couple years back someone thought my husband was my father even though I am older than him. It can feel rough, especially when you notice when you're not being treated with as much respect in interviews or in the office. It is good to be given advice and realizing how to dress for a more mature look is a great start. Thank you so much for your videos.

  • @alexs8253

    Dressing as someone with delicate features can be really tricky! I am not strictly petite, but have a body type/look that is so easily swayed by what I wear - more often than not, I find I can unintentionally look much younger than I am. For example, I recently bought a very simple, A-line, silk dress in navy blue with a white floral pattern, that would look quite laidback and casual on someone else. At first, when I tried it on, I instantly wanted to send it back - it made me look like a 12 year-old dressing up for family dinner on a Sunday...until I realised it's all about proportion and got it shortened from knee-length to mid-thigh. I now look like a woman in mid-20s enjoying her summer holiday, which is exactly what I wanted - but it's crazy how details like this can make or break an outfit. Really useful video. Please keep them coming x

    My little tip, as a petite I try to always wear shoes that are in colour as close as possible to the trousers/skirt/dress I am wearing. I think it gives the optical illusion that legs are longer, while for example if I wear black shoes with light jeans, I look like 'chopped up', in a way

  • @irairod5160
    @irairod5160 5 лет назад +5

    You are so right about the ankle straps on shoes! I'm 5' 3" and don't have particularly long legs, so anything with a piece that visually cuts the line between my leg and my foot is not flattering. I do like T-straps in which the top of the T comes below the bottom of the ankle bone...I find that the vertical strap elongates my frame, especially if it's a color that doesn't contrast much with my skintone. Likewise, straps that crisscross in front of the foot look better on me than something that has a solid, wide "cuff" around the narrower part of my lower leg. But contrary to your preferences, maxi dresses are a big no-no for me. If I wear one, I look like I'm emerging from a sinkhole and half of my body is still underground. My best skirt length is just above or just below the knee. Shorter than knee-length is not good either--I feel it makes me look wider. Thank you for all your tips. It's important for everyone to develop a keen eye for scale and placement and learn which pieces and styles will communicate what we want them to, especially in the workplace, when going through major life transitions, or at any point in which we can use a little help to get us out of a funk.

    The thickness of the stripe might be alleviated by the intensity of contrast. By that I mean if the stripes are a dark and just a shade lighter might be less than a high contrast stripe. Dark gray and black as opposed to Bright red and white. Just a thought.

    Have you looked into David kibbe’s body type system? He encourages us to embrace our ‘flaws’ and not try to ‘correct’ them; but instead to follow our body’s own lines. His ‘gamine’ type is typically petite and he tells them to wear very animated clothes (clashing prints etc). You don’t look like a gamine to me (you seem more soft classic) but it’s well worth a look! Also (not to be too contrary) many interior designers are suggesting we embrace the intimacy and drama of smaller rooms by using precisely the things we ‘shouldn’t’: ie bold prints and dark colours. This idea that more space/looking taller=more attractive needs scrutiny methinks!

  • @emilybm5251

    I’m 149cm and don’t wear majority of the clothing types you mention myself either. I will admit though, I’m going through a tote bag phase but I always make sure that it’s a smaller sized tote so it’s proportional with my small frame. I’ll very occasionally shop in teen/junior section too but it has to be a piece that I can 100% picture being on the mannequin in the women’s section as well. I’m all about having the right cut that best falters my body type. 🙂

      Hey! I'd recommend a really nice pair of wide leg jeans/trousers and things that are a slightly cropped fit on the top , I have some cropped Jumpers I adore and they're really flattering! Also midi length skirts I find are a wardrobe staple of mine ! I'm 5 foot just got clarification Hope this is helpful :)

    Oh my I love this. Your videos have inspired me to completely redo my wardrobe. I was tired if people thinking I was a teenager or even a teen Mom for that matter 😂. I'm 31 but people often think I'm about 18 based on my hight and young looking face. Well not anymore! 😉

    I’m not giving up my larger purse for personal reasons, however, I agree with pretty much everything else. I wear some stripes but I’m an hour glass petite so in the chest area I’m fine. I really enjoy your content please keep it up!

    I sometimes start to feel down about my height then i see someone in the comments saying "Im 4'8" and i start to feel alot better. Many people have it worse than me I just have to keep my head up and stand straight.

    It’s so true, picking clothes up from the junior section it’s been my biggest mistake, oh my goodness what an eye opener. I’m over here complaining that those pieces have very little fabric on them, well duh! I’m a 26 year old woman looking for mature clothes in the wrong section!!!😱😱😂😂😂

    Thank you for these tips! 💕 I definitely agree with wearing maxi skirts. When I wear a maxi skirt with platform boots, I look pretty tall. Mini skirts I avoid because they make me look younger than I am (30 yr old with baby face). 🙄 P.S.: You sound so much like Lacey Sturm! Same sweet voice, also a very petite lady.

    Im 4'8 sometimes i wish i can be taller to wear longer pants !

    • @ah5721
      @ah5721 3 года назад

      The perk to being short is being able to shorten your pants in tailoring or cuff pants and shirts and it looks chic. I'm 5'9" and finding long sleeves and long enough pants is very difficult for me 🙍.

    I love this video (even as a 5’8” human)!
    The only gripe I have is with purses/handbags, as I tend not to find size has much bearing on cost.
    Some of my most expensive bags are the smallest (Chanel’s bags are a good example, as their large, seasonal totes are always cheaper than their classic styles).
    Anyway, I’m nit picking. This is an amazing video 😊

      @alikat8221 5 лет назад

      SkiingIsMyHappyPlace Bliss True, but then isn’t the point that bag price is material, brand & detail dependent, as opposed to size? I feel as though size is the variable least likely to correlate to price.
