  • STATELESS (APÁTRIDA) is another gem directed and written by documentary filmmaker, Michèle Stephenson who is Haitian-Panamanian and raised in Quebec. Though Hispaniola is shared by neighboring countries adjacent to one another, the Dominican Republic and Haiti's shared history has been fraught with friction. The film focuses on a particular chapter when in 2013 legislation in which the Dominican Republic's Supreme Court retroactively stripped the citizenship of residents of Haitian descent, leaving more than 200,000 people stateless, subject to immediate deportation, and devastating loss. Travel with us in an interview between TíoLouie and Michèle who dive into a poignant film that delivers the battle and agony faced by a marginalized group as its protagonist, Rosa Iris Diendomi, a Dominican-born lawyer of Haitian heritage fights for the rights of her community on the Caribbean island. A universal and timeless story of belonging and being made to feel that you don't belong and what happens when a government strips you of your birthrights. Premiered at DOC NYC, Tribeca Film Festival and screened nationally on the PBS signature program, POV: www.pbs.org/vi...
