There are so many misleading videos on youtube advertising how to copy tennis pros. Kevin still references pros but emphasizes the basics often neglected online and with local coaches. This should be the reference and the standard for training tennis. Excellent coach.

Excellent video. Finally somebody explains the kinetic chain in detail. Just by doing the drills I am really understanding the transfer of the body in to the ball and I can feel that by stopping the forward movement of the hips and allow the arm racket to hit the ball with more power . Thank you Kevin. Good work.

This was a great video. I have always bent my legs and stayed low. However, I always shoot straight up, especially on the forehand. And people will tell you to move your weight into the ball. This drill made me realize that the movement comes from the hip. I definitely felt it in my right hip with just doing the drill at home. I also tend to come to the ball late and my should does not come out in front. I think with these two things in mind, I will hit cleaner. Thank you!

I wish the hip shoulder separation was mentioned more often in the past. Patrick, Serenas previous coach explains hitting a forehand by throwing your hand at the ball after getting loaded, I got a lesson saying the same. I never really heard anyone talk about the hip shoulder separation on any of the youtube teaching pros until about 2 months ago I stumbled upon a video by Tim Mayotte, former pro. It wont feel good for a while as it takes getting used to if you have been doing it wrong a long time like myself. Just make sure elbow is up and you have enough distance from the ball when you swing. Much more power when you get used to it and you hit harder by a faster rotation of hips not arm. Good stuff Kevin !!!

    Good video. Two things:
1.40 min. that's not the case: Most energy comes from down and up instead of down and forward. See the difference in height of Thiem's head at loading the back leg and after reloading (2.37).
7.20 min. In the clip the arm is moving simultaneously with the hip. That should not be the case. The hip rotation always comes first to achieve the whip effect.

I have been watching foot placement on pros and it makes sense to have a fair amount of internal rotation on your right foot in your stance because if not it’s impossible to open your hips all the way and the heel will have to pop up instead of push. Just a detail I saw. Great vid.

Great video. I have started rotating the shoulder further as discussed here and the difference has been enormous both in depth and power. The only problem is as I get tired I revert to my old, “safer” style and have to really focus to regain the form. Practicing against the wall before a match helps getting into the shoulder extension groove. 🎾🎾🎾

Hello Kevin great video! Just one doubt, how can I practice this aligned with the fact to hit the ball in front and not hitting it late? Because I feel that if I practice this home exercises but still I have a late contact point, I will not be able to unload- push forward and explode my forehand power.

Kevin, you and I must be on the same frequency, man..... Just worked on the exact same thing with my 13yr old daughter, to better sync the shoulder and the hitting arm. Already spent about 2hrs on the fix, gonna need more for muscle memory to kick in but headed the right direction. Her issue was that, all though she used hips and shoulder for the FH, the right hip had way too much lag where basically, it was all arm.... hard to see and harder to admit (because otherwise she's got a great FH) but arm / hip were out of sync. Especially on the neutral stance where she'd load the right leg, then hit and rotate but keeping the right hip back. After fixing this issue, I no longer have to remind her to - "follow through dammit" because it's naturally happening. Additionally, very obvious benefit of the sync'd hip / shoulder is the FH consistency and better drive. She hits with a straight arm on the forward stroke, sometimes a bit bent at contact but mainly straight. Love your channel, man.....!

Always stretch before a match! :O I had to play 3 long matches. The first match I played well, the second my legs began to hurt and sprain and then the third I couldn't even run but lost well.
The first and second I won but the third I lost 3-6 and 2-6. It was crazy. And Level 1 National, everyweek! Your bones might even hurt.

This lesson is bogus. The kinetic chain is top down. The legs and hips do not initiate the forward swing. Instead, the rotation into the balls starts with the non dominant hand, then shoulders >> hips then finally, legs. If you follow the instruction in this video, you will be exhausting all of the stored energy prior to making contact with the ball. Basically flailing into the ball with your upper body moving backwards, away from the ball.

    • @tonyhoward4805

Just make sure you do core training..rotation training...flexibility and strength training...if you do not want to get injured...I adviced my club mates that you have to do extra conditioning, core and strength training and I even asked them to do it together with me..they just ok ok..but neve show up..then they get deltoid injuries...abs pulled...knee injury and one even broke the outer bone on the ankle..straight to the E.R...she was crying in pain..casted and out for months...
