The Toji flashback scene hits really hard the more you think about it. He sold Megumi off to the people who abused him his entire life, thinking it'd still be a better place for his talented son than by his side.
I cried on that scene. Toji is so much more complex than people think.
I love the way they reveal his character. Faint flashbacks to his son as a child in hidden inventory, Toji saying "oh that's right i named him megumi" is him essentially trying to convince himself that he doesn't care. In his real death however we see his final thoughts being of Megumi despite that and regret selling him to the Zenin clan and hoping that Gojo will save Megumi from a life with the Zenin. When we see him in shibuya we see his reasoning for selling Megumi. On the surface all his actions towards Megumi seem cold, cruel and heartless, but beneath it all, his actions are done out of love and hope for Megumi's future subconciously.
Gojo to Jogo - "You are weak.."
Sukuna to Jogo - "You are strong.."

The animation style used in this episode is called "kagenashi" means no shadow, this style is used mostly in action sequences in other anime but we was lucky that we get this style throughout this ep, kagenashi is very common for smooth animation sequences cuz they remove shadow to have more fluid animation cuz shadows will make the animation a bit weird if in this style in the inbetween frames cuz the character are off model to increase fluidity.

The style of the animation is different this episode and the next one, because as u saw, the characters were animated with less details, i mean almost with no shadows, with the purpose of the animation to be more fluid and smooth....more cleaner animation=more frames to add, more work to do, so thats why there were almost no shadows and the style was different.. (i personally like this kind of animation better, because u can really feel whats going on, and the direction of the fight was also 🔥)
I'll have to disagree with ya there it's just a Mappa time crunch bullshit thing that lead to goofy looking models imo. Wish they had been given real time to put together this season they still did amazing despite having so little though. But to each their own the style/quality of the 16th episode especially was just a bit off-putting for me same as flexie
@@Personuh not really, the director that animated jogo vs sukuna was told that he can experiment new things and have fun with that fight, and i know that the animators didnt had much time, and were rushed, but personally i realy like how it turned out
@@Personuh the style is not about the lack of time, its an artistic choice which in my opinion is extremely pleasing to look at, and it does also allow for more fluid animation, but you still shouldnt underestimate how hard it is to make drawings have depth without using much shadows. nothing from season 1 comes even close to the sakuga fest that ss2 is.
@@Personuhthis episode was actually the highest priority in the season when it first came out so it was more of an artistic choice. The episode was directed by Miso who is a recurring one piece key animator. You can search some of his work in the Wano arc
@@Personuh I agree with you. This style definitely made the animation look off to me. I would have prefered the S1 animation to this where the characters had shadows and depth while the animation still looked fluid AF. Even if the season was postponed for another year. I feel it cheapened JJK's best arc.

Its Megumi's technique that triggers the memory I believe. Shikigami can be done alot of ways, but when Tojo slips into shadow and then sees Megumi pull the blade out of the shadows, he recognises it as the Ten Shadow's technique and that gives him brief lucidity. When Megumi answers Fushiguro and not Zenin, he realises that Megumi took his mothers name, just like Toji took her name. And so, realising he cannot stop fighting due to the technique, Toji deletes himself, dying whilst standing for a second time.
Megumi doesn't slip, that Tojis. Its just that regardless of Megumi's plan, he isn't quick enough and didn't get the timing right to actually land the hit on Toji.
Animation styles is a combination of stylist choices and time presssure. Its never really bad, but they definately change styles on occasion because they can make look something look great in that style a lot quicker then it would to do it in another style and we are into the period where the crunch on Mappa workers was insanity.
Man I love Sukuna’s VA 💞, what a splendid job he does embodying the power he exudes.
Also crazy how Mahito is the only remaining member of the disaster curses!
Toji recognizing Megumi really pulled at my heartstrings 😭 and Megumi still doesn’t know! Gojo did say Megumi can ask him anytime but he’s currently uh occupied being trapped by the prison realm 😅, I do hope he gets to learn the truth sometime.

For episodes like this, it requires alot of work and time. So throughout this season apparently commissioned many well known animators outside the studio to do certain scenes maybe 3-5 minutes at a time. So each episode you're watching the culmination of multiple artists adding their touch and skill to the show. A show as popular as jjk, it's almost a celebration of artists who get to take turns bringing this panels to life.

if we consider one sukuna finger has a power of 2 units. Now jogo has a power of 9 sukuna fingers (i.e. 2^9 = 512) and current sukuna has 15 fingers in him (i.e. 2^15 = 32768). This is the approximate power difference between jugo and sukuna currently and now we can say that with each finger, sukuna's power increases exponentially. So the current power of sukuna is only 3.125% of his original power (i.e. (2^15)/(2^20) x 100 = 3.125 %).

15 fingered sukuna truly set the stage these few episodes of the season
edit: also the shift in animation style is a great technique in the industry where the details and illustrations were simplified in exchange for having fluid movement, a lot of animators that cooked this season, specialized in doing these full-motion fight scenes, thus the direction was to fully use the stacked team working on the episode.
I absolutely love the animation in this episode and the next 😁

I personally think this is the best adapted episode of the season as it really hits all the major moments in the manga while adding to the fight instead of changing it.
Jogo is probably the strangest character in JJK for me because when he was introduced I thought he was just a strange looking mook with a goofy design who only existed to show Gojo really was OP. He still did prove the latter, but he wasn't just a mook, and he ended up being the curse "closest" to being human and his design and character grew on me a lot over the course of series. RIP

Tojis last wish or what he said to Gojo was he had a kid who was about to be sold off to the zenin clan, "Do what you will of it" When he asked for the name he realized that he was not a zenin and he was glad
Fun fact, the animation style changes between seasons in a similar way that the manga art style changes throughout the story

Just for clarification’s sake, Toji, after saving Megumi from the clan on his dying breath, finishes his character arc by becoming a better father. He was on full instinctual mode and he fought it back just enough to off himself before his body murdered Megumi.

I don’t know how else to word it other than: the reason they changed the animation style is Sukuna, they wanted a visceral reaction of “oh this is different” for the fights with Sukuna in. The animation style was just that good for those fights that MAPPA just said do it for the season
